Term 2 Week 6 Tuesday 4 June 2019 PSSA SOCCER

Round three of the PSSA Soccer Competition crept up on us quite quickly. The blustery Monday winds had a few players (and team manager) shivering on the sidelines. The boys were quick to get into action against Singleton Heights though, scoring their first goal within ten minutes of play. Singleton Heights replied, scoring their first goal. We knew then, we were going to need both strong defence and huge efforts from our midfielders and strikers. The boys followed the game plan precisely, maximising our sidelines and went on to score another four goals. Unfortunately Singleton Heights remained goal-less in the second half and we went on to win 5-1. Goals were scored by Sullivan, Matt, Cooper (2) and Atticus (assisted by Zoran (2), Will, Matt, and Steven). Our strong line of “footy player” defence worked

harder than ever. All players in the team put in a mammoth effort this game and I am so proud of them. We are now through to Round 4. Details of the match should be out shortly.

MULTICULTURAL PERSPECTIVES PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

Scone Public School will be participating in the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition this year. We will be selecting two students to compete in the Years 3 & 4 section and two students to compete in the Years 5 & 6 section. The students will be expected to give two speeches – A Prepared Speech and an Impromptu Speech. The students must choose a topic from the list of Multicultural topics which is available from Mrs Borg. The local final will take place on 1 July at Maitland East Public School. Students who are interested in participating in this competition will need to have their speeches ready for Mrs Borg to hear by Thursday, 6 June. Students will present their speech on this day, then four representatives will be chosen. For the Multicultural Perspectives Competition the Year 3 & 4 students are allowed three minutes for their Prepared Speech and one minute for their Impromptu Speech. The Year 5 & 6 students are allowed four minutes for their Prepared Speech and two minutes for their Impromptu Speech. Good luck to all interested students.

Nicole Borg SUPER STRENGTH SPOTTERS

Don’t be alarmed! They are friendly characters! This week students are being selected to spot strengths in others during lunch play and give reasons for their choices.

Every individual possesses all 24 character strengths in different degrees, giving each person a unique character profile. We can dial them up or down depending on what we are doing in our everyday lives.

Knowing your character strengths isn’t just interesting information. When skillfully applied, character strengths can actually have a significant positive impact on your life. Research shows that using your character strengths can help you:

• Buffer against, manage and overcome problems

• Improve your relationships • Enhance health and overall well-being

We look forward to sharing the photos with you in next week’s newsletter from our ‘Super Strength Spotters’.

During the week students are also invited to participate in lots of other fun activities that have been planned! Please see the attached flyer for what is happening across the week.

PREMIER’S SPORTING CHALLENGE Students and staff will be recording and tracking their physical activity over the next ten week period. The aim is to encourage everyone to be more active. Mrs Schofield has been co-ordinating a “Walking Club” before school and students have been responding positively to this activity.

Our school also operates a Breakfast Club every morning in our Community Hub and offers a healthy breakfast of cereal, toast and fruit to those who need it.

Many students come to school and begin their day by munching on packet foods such as chips and biscuits while they wait for the start of the school day. Please encourage your child to pack and eat a healthy option to have before school. Alternatively, encourage them to attend Breakfast Club for a nutritional start to the day.
