Pastor’s CornerPastor’s CornerPastor’s Corner Rincón del PastorRincón del PastorRincón del Pastor A young seminarian was speaking to a group of teenag-ers that were on retreat. He told them about one of his favorite parts of seminary life - waking up early in the morning to go to the chapel for an hour of Eucharistic Adoration. From his time meditating in front of the Body of Christ in the tabernacle, he developed his own prayer for adoration and receiving Eucharist: “Jesus, I want to be you.” Some could see this as an audacious request. That we, in all our human frailty, might approach the Creator of the universe, truly present in the bread and wine of the Eu-charist, and beg to not be just like him, or draw close to him, but to actually become him. And yet, when we process forward for Communion and hear the words spoken, “the Body of Christ” and “the Blood of Christ,” our “amen” signifies not only our belief that the bread and wine have in fact been transformed into the sacred flesh of Jesus, but also that this is our own true nature and who we are called to be, the Body of Christ alive and active in our world. St. Augustine puts it this way: “If you, therefore, are Christ’s body and members, it is your own mystery that is placed on the Lord’s table! It is your own mystery that you are receiving! You are say-ing ‘Amen’ to what you are.” In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the gathered crowds, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.” Throughout the Gospel of John, re-maining in Jesus is perhaps the most important duty of a disciple. Later in the Gospel, Jesus will use the word “remain” 12 times in 17 verses in the parable of the true vine (John 15:1-17). Often, we might think that it is our actions that should be the focus of the spiritual life, and yet within this para-ble , Jesus gives the commandment to “remain” twice as many times as he mentions bearing fruit on the vine. Re-maining is the starting point and the only way to carry out our mission as disciples - to bring the love of Christ to the broken places of our world. Our identity as Christ’s body and blood is not a status symbol or a conveyor of power, instead it marks us for a life of servanthood and radical self-gift to others. Our Lord is the “living bread that came down from heaven” who desires to be our food and drink. This is the humility that we are called to emulate: to seek to be nourishment for others instead of worrying about satisfying our own hungers for recognition or material possessions. If Jesus’ call for us to be bread that is broken and wine that is poured out seems nearly impossible, we can take courage that he does not ask us to do it on our own. At the altar, we encounter the bread of life, Jesus, the risen one, who desires to feed us with himself. In hope and trust, we pray “Jesus, I want to be you,” and then say “amen” to who we truly are. The Eucharist is the greatest gift that Jesus left for us to celebrate. It is a gift that we should all want to share with others. Through the RCIA process others can come to know what we know and what we love, namely, Jesus in the Eucharist. If you have not celebrated all your Sac-raments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation) then the RCIA is for you. If you have contemplating join-ing the Church, or you know someone who is interested, then the RCIA is for you or them. Please contact our new RCIA Director Sister Marie Paul, SND, through our par-ish office. All are welcome to inquire and come and see. Father Michael Rocha

Did You Know?

Review your family phone numbers As a family, you should have a list of family emergen-cy phone numbers that your children know from an early age. Review these numbers together a few times a year. Children should know their parents’ cell and work phone numbers, and they should know who to call — and how— in an emergency. Include the numbers for the police, the fire department, and stress the importance of knowing when and how to con-tact 911. For little children who cannot memorize all that yet, try writing the parents’ phone numbers inside their shoes. 2. Life Insurance Policy and Retirement Assets: Naming St. Paschal’s as a partial beneficiary of these assets can provide support for our community for years to come.

THIS EUCHARISTIC FEAST

Some things about human nature don’t change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we have a feast. In today’s first reading, Lady Wisdom is setting a feast, a sign of celebrating the covenant that Israel has with God. Israel’s central remembrance of its saving Exodus covenant is the Passover meal. So it is natural—and not coincidental—that the Christian celebration of the new cove-nant sealed by the blood of Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucharist, offered first by Jesus in the context of Passover remembrance. It is easy for us, sometimes, to forget the very long and rich religious and human origins of our eucharistic feasting on the bread and cup that are the Body and Blood of Jesus. Today, and for the next few Sundays that we hear the “Bread of Life” discourse from John, let us bring to mind the loving covenant that God makes with us, and be filled with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend! Sometimes the heat of summer translates into unrest in a city’s streets. In the summer of 1834, popular sentiment against the presence of the Ursuline nuns near Boston reached a boiling point. An influx of Irish laborers had an impact on the work force in the city, and a deep-seated resentment against Catholics fueled the fire. The nuns supported them-selves with a school, and most of the young women students were drawn from patrician Protestant families. Neverthe-less, rumors fed by the saga of an unhappy junior sister and a later episode of a senior sister fleeing the place increased tensions. The city’s selectmen were given a tour by the disgruntled sister, who by then had returned, and found all things in good order. That didn’t please the mob, and the mother superior didn’t help matters when she said that the bishop had platoons of Irishmen at hand, twenty thousand strong, to do marauders harm. By August 11, the convent had been invaded, ransacked, and burned to the ground. The nuns fled to Maine and Canada. The diocese attempted to re-cover losses, but the commonwealth offered only ten thousand dollars, which was rejected. Years later, a legislative bill for the state to rebuild the convent and school was roundly defeated. Yet the enterprise of Catholic education had great resilience, and in 1946, more than a hundred years after the riots, the Ursulines returned to Boston to re-establish an academy that endures to the present day. —Rev.
