  • FROM THE PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE…

Create a new spirit! Happy Pentecost and traditional day of the “birthday of the church.” After such a great Spring Fling Parish Festival – and all the wonderful volunteers and participants, it was great to feel the sense of community and love for one another. May the Holy Spirit continue to bless our church and help us grow together in service for the coming year.

Spirit of Ministry and Service: It's that time of year to train a new group of altar servers! Recently in a major Catholic magazine, there was an article about allowing altar girls -- for in certain parts of the country, they are not allowing girls to be servers. I think we can sometimes take for granted the opportunities that the church offers us, unless the ministry is taken away or not allowed. It is a great reminder that at Saint Paschal Baylon we strive to be as inclusive as possible and church law allows. For instance, in many places across the country (and around the globe), no lay people may distribute Holy Communion or be lectors. In some parishes, children may not be lectors or after receiving confirmation, be ministers of Holy Communion or ushers or cantors. We allow everyone this opportunity - and hope that every family and child will take the opportunity to take a liturgical role - that stems from our baptismal call to serve the church. While I'm recruiting altar servers with the summer training offered below, I am also recruiting for lectors, communion ministers and ushers to help at each Mass this summer and in the future. Please consider as a family being ushers - you could all be at the door welcoming other families and friends together. Or - allow one of your children to serve. See how lucky and blessed we are to be able to serve openly, for in some parts of the world, and in our own country, we do not have this opportunity, blessing and privilege. THANK YOU for coming forward.

Daily and Sunday Mass Recruitment Drive: Have you ever considered “recruiting” for Mass? We never stop celebrating – and again, we can take this for granted. We always have Mass here at SPB and in some parts of the world the government forbids it or people are thwarted and not able to attend. For the summer, consider coming with your children, off from school, to a morning Mass (9:00 a.m. is most popular!). Also, don’t forget we have the obligation to praise God every Sunday at Mass – to be who we say we are “the Body of Christ.” We say, “Amen” to who and what we are: a community of faith surrounding Christ our Savior. Often enough I am told, “We have the best music and preaching!” Share these compliments with folks, especially those who have been away from the church awhile – and fill up our church with praise and thanksgiving!

Gratitude to the LADIES GUILD: The Guild donated $4,000 toward a new electronic sign and then the law changed in Highland Heights not allowing any. We have been advised not to “fight City Hall” and the law. So instead of replacing our existing sign, the Guild is placing their donation for security cameras in the church. This is part of our ongoing Safety Committee work, expanding the cameras we already have in certain places and adding one building at a time to the network that is

  • FROM THE PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE… continued tied in with the Police Department and Safety Director. Adding one building at a time each year to keep our parish and school safe is part of our 5-year safety plan.

More Spring Fling Survey Data: Just wanted to recall for folks the survey results we published a few weeks back, but were missed by many due to First Communion, Confirmation, graduation, Mother’s Day and more:

    • July Spring Fling: 114 votes • May Spring Fling: 108 votes • Not sure: 30 votes

I would volunteers to help in: • 71 in May • 58 in July

The committee recommended not to change the parish festival time for these reasons as well as: • Weather is ALWAYS an issue no matter when • We want to remember and give thanks to God for our patron saint • We want to be the first festival • More volunteers are here in May and not on vacation, due to many who are away during the month of June and July

Carpet Cleaning: The chapel will have its annual carpet cleaning this week – exposition will be in church. Other maintenance projects will commence shortly, so please be patient during construction and cleaning, especially as the sidewalk around the church “handicap” door, is redone. We will be replacing the concrete and asphalt soon with heating coils placed underneath to assist with not having ice build up.

See you at Lyndhurst Community Presbyterian Church: For our first ever Hillcrest area Pentecost Service – about an hour in length. Later today at 3:00 p.m.

Keep the spirit of community, love and prayer going all summer long! Happy feast day again, and let’s continue to pray for each other!

    In Christ our Eucharist,

Reverend John Thomas J. Lane, SSS, “SPB Class of 1979 ” Pastor

PS Thanks for your generosity for the Nepal Earthquake collection this weekend. Remember, too, don’t miss a week at SPB – miss a week, miss a lot!

  • STEWARDSHIP REPORT

Tithing from May 17, 2015: $12,784.00 Help with Catholic Charities Appeal Year-to-date, Saint Paschal Baylon has seen a 44% decrease in donors and 27% decrease in dollars raised through the February in-pew appeal to Catholic Charities in 2015 as compared to 2014. With an overall 90.71% raised towards our $137,005 goal, you can see the impact these deficits have had in the progress towards our parish goal. (In 2014, we were just $318 away from reaching our goal as opposed to $12,722 away from reaching goal this year.)

Despite these deficits, there is much reason to have hope in the continued success of the appeal! The generosity of the faithful of the Diocese of Cleveland in supporting the mission, the programs and services to the neediest persons in Northeast Ohio will carry us to our goal. If every parish is able to inspire just twenty-one new donors to pledge to this 2nd in-pew appeal, we will be ahead in donors and on track to meet our 2015 goal.

Hopefully knowing this information will inspire those who have not yet made a gift to reach out to their brothers and sisters in need with joy and generosity by making a gift to the 2015 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal!

    • Facts: 2,386 Parishioner Household • Number of Donors to Catholic Charities: 432 – 18% of the parish • Amount Paid: $87,379 • Amount Pledged: $124,283 • Percent of fulfillment: 70% • Goal: $137,005 • Percent of the goal: 90.71%

    THANK YOU SPB!!!

ONLINE DONATIONS The original Automatic Donation Program is being phased out and will discontinue in June 2015. We are grateful to everyone that has already switched to MyEoffering.

The advantages to you with our new MyEoffering program are the option to use credit cards to make donations and all the second collections can receive money through your online donations.

The website for enrolling in the donation program is available through the parish website, www.saintpaschal.com. Look on the church side of the website for the icon that is printed with this article. That will take you to the MyEoffering website.

Parishioners still using the Automatic Donation Program have already received two letters inviting you to sign up for MyEoffering.

CLOWN AND HELPING HANDS MINISTRY A special thank you to all the Clown and Helping Hands people who volunteered at the Spring Fling. Some of you volunteered for two days, others until late at night and then the next morning you went out to feed the needy and homeless. God bless you all for giving so much of your time, love and concern. It was so good to see so many of you. I am not going to mention names because I would forget someone and I know many of you would be embarrassed to have your name mentioned. You are, as Pope Francis said, people of Eucharistic tenderness.
