Pastor’s CornerPastor’s CornerPastor’s Corner Rincón del PastorRincón del PastorRincón del Pastor We have arrived at the Third Sunday of Lent. The Sea-son of Lent is a journey that is an intense gift that will bring us closer to Jesus. When we encounter Christ we can expect wonderful things to happen. The Samaritan woman encounters Christ in today’s Gospel. She declares today, “Sir, I can see that you are a prophet.” After her lengthy conversation with Jesus, she said to her townspeople: “Come and see someone who told me everything I ever did!” The world seems to have always known people who claim clairvoyance. Today if you type “fortune teller” into the browser of your computer you can find hundreds of psychics listed. For $3.99 a minute you can talk to one who claims to be “a gifted, honest, caring psychic who can help you with all issues.” Also available are astrologers, mediums, palm readers and tarot card readers [After speaking with any of these you can be certain of two things - you have wasted your money and you have made them a little rich-er!]. The encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan wom-an at the well was no chance encounter. Their thirst brought them together at Jacob’s well. They both needed water: Jesus’ thirst is physical. After walking in the heat of the day and at a considerable distance his body is hot, tired and thirsty. The woman, too, thirsts. She longs to have the burdensome work of hauling water completed for another day. Given the strict rules of public decorum regarding encounters between men and women not of the same family, this chance meeting could have been over before it began. If you were not related you did not talk. Furthermore Jews and Samaritans had nothing to do with each other. But yet, the two sit, talk and listen to each other. The Samaritan woman comes to understand who Jesus is. Initially he is just a Jew to her. She comes to believe that he is a Prophet. It becomes a moment of conversion of the heart. She becomes a believer. After listening to the woman and then listening to Jesus, others, the townspeo-ple, also come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah. It costs nothing to visit Jesus in prayer. He is the only one who can really tell you everything you ever did. He is the long-awaited Messiah who said to the Samaritan woman: “I, who speak to you, am he.” Beginning this Sunday at the 9:00am Mass (next weekend at the 10:45am Mass and the following at the Sunday 5:30pm) we will celebrate the brief Rites of Scrutiny. The Scrutiny Rites, each having a particular effect, are preparing the Candidates and Catechumens in the RCIA process for their entrance into our Church at the Easter Vigil Mass on Saturday, April 15th. I would ask our en-tire community to continue to keep these men and wom-en in your prayers. These candidates and catechumens are wanting to join our church because Jesus has brought them here. These men and women also had encounters with some of you that inspired them to come and see. Now they want to stay - thank you all for inspiring them. Because of you, they have met Jesus at the well and have come to believe. May this Lenten journey allow us all to have wonder-ful encounters with Jesus. Father Michael Rocha

Padre Michael Rocha

Lenten Guidelines All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (Fasting - one major meal and two smaller snacks during the day). In addition, all Catholics 14 years of age and older are asked to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. Regardless of age, if you are able, it would be good to join those obliged to follow the abstention from meat as a sign of unity. For special health concerns always seek out your doctor’s advice.

Did You Know?

Parents should be aware of laundry pod dangers Risks to children’s safety come in many shapes and sizes. As parents and caring adults, inappropriate adult conduct is not the only risk to watch for; we must also create safe environments to protect children from other risks. One possible threat comes from the small soft plastic pods that hold laundry detergent. The pods are brightly colored, and often attract young children who may mistake them for candy or other foods and according to studies, children who ingest these pods or been exposed to them could become ill and need to be hospitalized. For more information, request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Detergent Pods” from [email protected] or (213) 637-7227.

Dear Parents,

As Lent begins, the religious education office hopes our families will take ad-vantage of some of the offerings that are available for your faith journey. Friday fish frys in the SPB hall from 5-7 pm: We strongly encourage our

religious ed families to attend the fish frys, perhaps grab a table to sit together and get to know one another better, then continue your evening with Stations of the Cross in the church at 6pm in English and 7pm in Spanish. The many programs available via email to guide you in your Lenten journey. Two that I particularly like are Matthew Kelly / Dynamic Catholic’s “Best Lent Ever”, found at http://dynamiccatholic.com/bestlentever/, and Bishop Barron’s Word on Fire Lent Reflections, at http://www.lentreflections.com/. I highly recommend subscribing to one of these, or any other program that you find to your liking. You can see what’s avail-able by googling “daily Lent reflections”. There are also reflec-tions available in Spanish. You may find this to be a helpful way to structure your devotions during Lent. If you ever have any questions, concerns, or just need some ideas or advice for your faith journey, please contact Jennifer by phone or email. We wish you all a very blessed Lenten sea-son.

Parish Ministry Announcements

Dear SPB Parishioners,

As many of you are aware, Saint Paschal Baylon School (SPBS) supports “Ryan’s

Well”. This is a program which was started by a young Canadian student named, Ryan Hreljac, when he was just six years old! Ryan’s original goal was and still re-mains to build simple but effective clean drinking wa-ter wells in Africa, in order to help save the lives of the many children who die there daily, due to drinking water contaminated by water-borne parasites.

I am very pleased to announce that SPBS was se-lected by “Ryan’s Well” for a personal school site visit by founder, Ryan Hreljac. We will hold a school wide assembly, featuring Ryan as the key-note speaker during his visit. In gratitude for your support of this program over the years, I cordially invite our SPB parishioners to attend this special assembly as well. The “Ryan’s Well” SPBS Assembly will be held in the Hall on Friday-April 7th at 11-11:45am. This is a great way to spend a morning in Lent: learning about how we have helped children across the globe!

SPBS is very proud to have raised funds over the past nine years to build nine clean drinking water wells in Africa. This year we are currently working hard to the raise the needed $2,000.00 to build well number TEN! When we achieve this goal our total amount donated will be $20,000.00! I plan to present Ryan with our check for 2016-17 on April 7 at the as-sembly.

SPBS raises the $2,000.00 that is needed to build one well each year by collecting and recycling emp-ty plastic water and sports drink bottles and alumi-num cans. Our SPBS Seventh Grade students, under the direction of their Homeroom Teacher, volunteer to sort and bag the donated items each week. Volun-teer parent drivers then take the sorted recyclables to the recycling center weekly and turn them in for cash. The work is completed in order to help save the lives of children who live on the other side of the world – as a way for our SPBS faculty, staff, students, and parents to truly live the global Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I would like to thank our parishioners who have do-nated their recyclable plastic bottles and aluminum cans to our “Ryan’s Well” program. I continue to encourage our parishioners who would like to support the “Ryan’s Well” project and help save the lives of children, to please drop-off empty plastic water/sports drink bottles and/or alumi-num cans at the school.

Bulletin Submission Deadline

NOTE: Effective immediately, all bulletin submissions are to be e-mailed to [email protected] by end of business day on the Monday prior to the Sunday Bulletin.

Long ago, the custom of sending some pieces of consecrated bread from the Lord’s table began to take hold. Origi-nally it was a way of assuring the sick and imprisoned of their bonds of faith and affection with the community from whom they were separated. By the third century, at least in Rome, we have evidence that the bishop would consign some of the sacred elements to presbyters or deacons. There was a crisis in the unity of the church early on, called the quartodeciman controversy, since some people wanted to celebrate the Paschal on the fourteenth day (quartodecima) of the Jewish month Nissan, even if it didn’t fall on a Sunday. The debate so fractured the church that the historian of the era, Eusebius, reported a new development to the pope. He wrote that the churches holding to the Lord’s Day sent out consecrated bread to the disgruntled people of the quartodeciman pastors with whom they were quarreling. Meanwhile, bishops complained about people taking the Eucharist home. St. Cyprian told a cautionary tale of a sinful woman who tried to open the “casket” containing the con-secrated bread in her home. She was deterred from receiving, he said, by flames erupting from the box. Clearly, he wanted people to think twice before bringing Communion home! The Council of Nicaea defined the “old rule of the church” as allowing for reserving the eucharistic bread for the sake of the dying. The same council could foresee circumstances of persecution when people might have the Eucharist on hand to administer to one another in a time of great danger, literally, at the point of a sword. The first and enduring purpose for reserving the Eucharist is viaticum for the dying. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THIRSTING FOR LIFE-GIVING WATERS Especially during the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter seasons, the prayer texts of the Eastern Church revel in para-doxical images of Christ: the eternal life who is put to death, the host of the supper who is also its meal, the thirsty cru-cified one with living water streaming from his side. These images flow from the evangelists’ portrayals of Jesus and from his very ministry, during which he often upset or reversed people’s expectations about him or the ways of God. This “reversal” is at play in today’s Gospel, as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner who is also a woman beneath his status. In addition he, the thirsting one, shows the woman to be the one truly thirsting. He—whose parched lips will say “I thirst” before he dies—is the source of life and life-giving water. Lent calls upon us to dwell on how each of us is thirsting for Christ, and it leads us, ultimately, back to the life-giving waters of our baptism into his Body. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international Catholic ministry which works with the poor, the homeless, and the disenfranchised people of its community. Here at St. Paschal Baylon our St. Vincent de Paul keeps a pantry open from 10 am to

12 pm Monday through Friday. Although we are mainly a food pantry, we also assist with bills for utilities, rent or gas. Our clients do not have to belong to the Parish but they must be from the Conejo Valley. We work with other Societies of SVDP to maximize our assistance.

We rely on our parishioners for food through donations through Project Response, drop-offs at the back of the church and other ministries who do collections during the year.

Pope Francis tells us to live our Faith with the Corporal Works of Mercy. Through the ministry of SVDP we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the needy, and help with housing. Come join us! The re-wards are great! We are in need of volunteers to assist us in our works of mercy. Time commitment is one shift at the pantry every other week and if possible bi-monthly meetings. Please call Cathy Hines (805-341-3026) or Sandy Elias (805-405-2586) if you have any questions.

PROJECT RESPONSE

Together, St. Paschal parishioners have donated over ONE MILLION DOLLARS through PROJECT RESPONSE to help those in need in our community.

Having said this, we are in a crisis situation. It takes about 150 people donating about 3 hours, 3 times a year to keep our program active. Our program is in jeopardy as we are in need of about 30 people.

If you can help, Call Dave Lavendier 805-557-9963 or Cathy Hines 805-499-6277

Juan14:23-29 Lecturas para el Domingo 26 de Marzo de 2017

1 Samuel 16:1B, 6-7,10-13A Efesios 5:8-14

Juan 9:1-41 :14-1814
