Pastor’s CornerPastor’s CornerPastor’s Corner Rincón del PastorRincón del PastorRincón del Pastor Immigrants who receive citizenship must take the Natu-ralization Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America. The oath requires the new citizen to absolutely and entirely renounce allegiance and fidelity to any for-eign power; to support and defend the country against all enemies; and bear true faith and allegiance. The new citi-zen also promises to bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law. The oath concludes that they do all this without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion. Other countries likely have similar require-ments for citizenship. In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives us a more simplified yet challenging version of his requirements for discipleship, our Christian citizenship, as it were. Jesus makes this de-mand on all of us: “Whoever loves father or mother ... son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” Today’s sacred scripture reminds us that Jesus and Paul recognized the notion that family was too small, too narrow, too restrictive. The larger and far more important reality was the conviction that the waters of baptism can create a new kind of family - a family that is composed of people who have discovered that an entirely different style of living is attainable. This new style they’re recommending demonstrates how the waters of baptism can truly be thicker than blood. The message is clear: Our baptism matters. It changes us. It calls us to re-think our value system, to re-view what truly counts, to re-commit ourselves to what will surely last against all odds. Baptism, our initial sacrament, is a marker point. It is an immersion into a life that is out of the ordinary, which introduces us to a lifestyle that is wholeheartedly focused on the reality of God. Since the majority of us were most likely mere infants when we were baptized, it’s all the more important for us as adults to review and to meditate upon those powerful words that were spoken on our behalf. In doing so, we will be reminded that we were originally “bathed in light,” and given the mission to be “followers and wit-nesses to the Gospel.” In a word, Jesus wants us to become baptized in our hearts. In doing so, Jesus is asking us to re-imagine the meaning of family, namely, a community of people dedi-cated to witnessing to the world what life could be like if we were willing to be transformed and changed. It will not be easy. It will involve stretching us, pulling us out of our small selves, introducing us to something bigger and richer and fuller. It will involve taking us to a whole new level of living. Even to one where water is thicker than blood. This holiday weekend we are preparing to celebrate the 241st birthday of our country on July 4th. As you all know, we live in the greatest country in the world. We are all so blessed. We are not a perfect nation. There are many challenges that we are facing as a nation at this time in our nation’s history. We are called as faithful christians to pray for our country, to support and encourage one an-other and to do what we can to contribute in a positive way. I hope that as we gather with family and friends on July 4th we would also pause to offer a prayer. Let us pray that God will continue to bless our nation, watch over our fellow citizens and bless us and our world with peace. God bless the United States of America. Father Michael Rocha

No será fácil. Padre Michael Rocha

Creating boundaries for mobile phone Parents and caregivers may be more inclined during sum-mertime to allow children to use mobile phones, especial-ly when school is not in session. Consider the following tips to establish boundaries and help keep children safe when using a mobile phone: --Contact service provider to block internet access and calls from unapproved phone numbers. --Designate certain times that cell phone must be turned off (family meals, school hours, after 10 p.m.) --Insist that parental permission is required for the down-load of any and all apps. To request a copy of the VIRTUS article "What Age is Appropriate for Children to be Provided with a Cell Phone?" email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

Parish Ministry Informa on Update on Parish Improvement Projects

Just keeping you informed. The church was painted, inside and out, and the doors were stripped and var-nished. The painting project cost $28,000. Extra lighting has been added to better highlight the refurbished Stations of the Cross at a cost of $831. The landscaping has also been improved around the church and other areas of the campus and there is more to come. So far about $2000 has been spent. As I mentioned on several occasions the parking lot is going to be repaired, double seal coated and re-striped. We could not do this sooner because of the school sched-ule, summer school and other parish events. We are scheduling this project for the week of July 24th. The cost is a little over $32,000. Sometime in August the next major project will be the painting of the exterior and most of the inside of the Par-ish Hall. These projects will cost about $25,000. We have a very busy parish with many events. In or-der to not disrupt all of those events I have had to stretch out the calendaring of all the projects. Please be patient. If you total up just these projects alone we will have spent $88,200.00. Thank you for your support and gener-osity that has allowed me to be able to improve our par-ish campus. Father Michael Rocha Addendum: Two other important projects are also being executed this summer. The Mens Club is remodeling several sections of the Parish Hall Kitchen. This will certainly improve our kitchen facilities and assist those that use the kitchen. A major beatification project will soon greet all those that come to St. Paschal’s. The “welcome circle” as you enter the parish parking lot between the parish center and the parish hall is going to be completly redesigned. As part of an Eagle Scout Project, in co-operation with the Parish, a park-like “Shrine to the Unborn” will be creat-ed. In the center will be a 5 ft. Carrera marble statue of Our Lady with the Christ Child placed on a pedestal. The present large pine trees will be removed as well as all the other old shrubs. A tall hedge will planted to form a background to the statue. The space surrounding the stat-ue will be filled with multi-colored rose bushes. The stat-ue itself will be surrounded by an arched arbor with crawling rose vines. The imported (and expensive) statue is a gift from a parish family. People who visit our com-munity will know with certainty that Saint Paschal’s is a Pro-Life Community.

St. Paschal's Respect Life

The Respect Life Ministry next meeting will be held

on September 6th , at 7:30 in the hall.

THE RICHNESS OF LIFE IN CHRIST

Today we have the beautiful story of the woman promised a child, the wonderful exhortation about life in Christ, and a powerful instruction from Jesus. An embarrassment of riches? Not if we take Jesus' words about "welcome" to heart. The many challenges and blessings offered to us today by Elisha, Paul, and Jesus should be cause for rejoicing, and welcomed heartily into our lives. And, like the great treat that they are, they should be enjoyed and shared gener-ously with others. Today's reading from Romans was chosen very early in the liturgical life of the Church to be the sole apostolic in-struction received by candidates for baptism at the Easter Vigil. This illustrates its importance as a core belief, and as a means of comprehending the story of the Resurrection. Christ's resurrection is not merely a story about something that he underwent once upon a time, but it is our story, the story of how we joined the other members of the one Body of Christ, the church. We were not only dead, but we were buried; not ultimately buried, but raised to eternal life with Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 2, 2017 Think of yourselves as dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus.

— Romans 6:11

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Elisha promises a baby son to the hos-pitable woman (2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a). Psalm — For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 89). Second Reading — We shall live in newness of life as Christ was raised from the dead (Romans 6:3-4, 8-11). Gospel — Whoever gives but a cup of cold water to an-other will surely be rewarded (Matthew 10:37-42). It’s Independence Day week, and there is a link worth tracing between the Declaration of Independence and the language of liturgy. One of the signers of the Declaration on that July 4 long ago was Charles Carroll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and one of the few Catholics on the political scene. As a flourish to his signature, he sought to distinguish himself from other prominent citizens bearing the same name by penning “Charles Carroll of Car-rolltown”—a defiant “come and get me if you dare” postscript aimed at the British. Carroll’s brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of delegates, to launch that task formally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain acceptance of our faith by American people who mistrusted our customs and could not compre-hend our liturgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our liturgy should be prayed not in Latin, but in the ver-nacular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later, his deep desire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Vatican Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world. —Rev.

What Age is Appropriate for Children to be Provided with a Cell Phone?
