CIVITAS is an EU initiative for supporting and evaluating the implementation of integrated sustainable and energy efficient urban transport strategies in European cities

CIVITAS ELAN is carried at the same time in five cities : 1. Ljubljana, Slovenia

2. Zagreb, Croatia

3. Gent, Belgium

4. Porto, Portugal

5. Brno, Czech Republic

The project consortium consists of different partners - city administration, universities, public transport organizations, NGOs and other public service providers.

The project lasts four years (2008-2012), but the partnership approach, sustainable solutions and the momentum of innovation and creativity should last much longer.

Public transport uncompetitive - low travel speed of trams and buses

Poor conditions for bicycle traffic (bike paths, parking lots, etc.)

been integrated into the tram fleet.

700 tram drivers have been trained how to operate new trams

160 clean fuels and energy efficient buses (100 biodiesel and 60 CNG).

The majority of bus drivers have been trained on safe driving, as well as on how to operate the new buses.

Passenger safety was improved with the installation of safety cameras in vehicles.

Noise level of buses is reduced by 3 dB.
