It’s all go around here! What with new landlords at the Red Lion in Marford and at the Golden Grove in Burton, as well as Machine House (or Churtons as we knew it) just re opening under new management. All local people, too, which is great news. On top of all that, it doesn’t seem two minutes since Martin took over at the Nags Head, Penny took over at the Butchers’ and the Croes Howell restaurant opened!
We’re not one of those quiet sleepy Welsh villages where people imagine nothing happens, are we! I think we’re okay for food and drink locally, don’t you? Do please try and support our local businesses; it’s down to all of us to keep them going. Which reminds me, I can recommend Gareth’s duck salad at the Griffin!
And if that wasn’t enough excitement, Hugh Jones, councillor for Rossett, has passed his Welsh exam during the summer, and not an easy one at that, a little bird tells me. Is there no end to his talent? Well done Hugh! Dare I say I have a sneaky suspicion that Douglas did most of the work
A few people have commented about Rossett making national TV concerning the recent floods and the River Alyn. I’m wondering if I need to get my arm bands out when I go delivering this month! Seriously, though,

your life, your home, your community.I hope no one has had any major disasters. I bumped into two people from Llay who are having to live in a local hotel for up to 6 months whilst their home is restored after flooding, I can’t imagine how dreadful that must be.
Anyway, I’m now off for a lie down to get over the shock of filling up my car with petrol costing £1.35 a litre. It was just a couple of months ago when it was £1.28 a litre. It never ceases to amaze me how much things cost these days. Never mind, it will soon be Christmas!
All the best, Jill

The Future of the Flower ShowThe Flower Show at the end of August is put on by Burton & Rossett Horticultural Society, a registered charity, and while the show is an intregal part of the Rossett Village Festival it has its own committee and is run separately from the festival. The Society start next year with a huge difficulty. It is not a lack of money; the Society has a healthy bank balance. However, we do need volunteers. Both our show secretary and our general secretary are leaving their positions. They are the people who mastermind the life of the Society and without other able people taking on these responsibilities the Society will be at serious risk. If you value the annual Flower Show, which has celebrated its 63rd show this year, now is your opportunity to get involved. The Flower Show has nearly died a few times over the recent past but as part of the Rossett Village Festival it is now a viable proposition. However, without the support and involvement of new people on the committee I have to say it will be unable to continue. If you would like to be involved, or simply to understand more about what might be asked of you, please do not hesitate to call me on 01244 571353, speak to any of the committee or come to the Annual General Meeting at Darland Sports Centre on Wednesday 24th October at 7.30 pm.
Yours sincerely

Flooding Two recent flooding events affected a number of properties. The first flash flood in August badly affected Greenfields, where water cascaded down through homes due to the inability of the brook to cope with the quantity of water. Council staff subsequently cleared a previously hidden gully which reduced the impact of the September rains, however more work needs to be done. Other areas suffered raw sewage in gardens and I am meeting with Welsh Water to discuss the situation. Whilst the weather conditions on that Saturday were extreme, I am concerned about the ability of the joint foul and surface drains to cope. Welsh Water has the responsibility for sewage drains and also drains that take both surface water and sewage. In the September rains, the flood defences were deployed in Station Road and Gun Street and Street Scene cleared a number of ditches around Burton and Rossett.
High Speed Broadband. The Welsh Government has promised to provide high speed broadband connection throughout most of Wales by 2015. This is being achieved through a contract with BT. I have recently
found out that Rossett and Holt are excluded. I am in discussions
with the Economic Development officers at Wrexham CBC and Councillors from Cheshire West to ensure that Rossett is included.
Charity Walk Many congratulations to Darland
School student Michael Gledhill and his father, Martin, who
recently completed a Coast to Coast walk in aid
of CHICS (charity
for children with cancer), raising in excess of £1500.
Planning I arranged for the Planning Committee to visit the site of the former Huskissons Garage in connection with an application to put windows to the rear of the loft space. I derive no satisfaction from the fact that nearly everyone agreed that the site was now grossly over-developed with three houses and that my original request for the Committee to restrict it to two was indeed correct. They have now agreed to remove all permitted development rights from the property; too little too late. Once again we see here over-development of the wrong types of house for our village.
Highways I brought the WCBC Highways Manager to Rossett to look at a number of issues. As a result there will be improved signage at the entrance to Darland Lane to warn drivers of the 7.5 tonne limit ahead. The 30mph limit is being extended into Gamford Lane. Options for improving the junction between Croes Howell Lane and the Llay Road are being examined and the speed limit review of Llay Road will take place next year. An improved parking scheme for residents of Trevalyn Hall View will be drawn up and put into next year’s budget. I will be discussing options with residents in due course. We are also looking how we can improve the safety of students crossing from the bus stop to the entrance of Darland School.
As always I can be contacted on 01244 571747 or [email protected].

Whilst for many of us an increase in life expectancy may seem like good news, it has to be recognised that there are financial implications for those who live longer. Few people take the time to plan for how they would meet the cost of paying for care should the need arise. This is despite the fact that if you have assets of more than £23,250 in England and £22,000 in Wales you would not be entitled to financial assistance from the local authority.
In 2010 the average fees for care home residents in Wales was £28,184 p.a. for nursing care and £22,160 p.a. for residential care. In the North West the comparable figures were £27,352 and £19,682 and in the UK £29,075 and £22,160- * Source: Laing & Buisson UK Market Survey 2010.
If fees increase at the rate of 5% per annum, in ten years that average figure of £29,075 will become £47,360 per annum. This could well be far in excess of what people are spending when they are fit and healthy and in their own homes.
Many people only come into contact with the care system at the time they or their relatives are due to enter care
and getting to grips with everything can be difficult at an already stressful time. It is essential to know about state benefits, the role of the local authority and the NHS, and most importantly the choices you have in relation to paying for care. In addition you need to be aware of the implications for the family home and if a spouse or relative still lives at home.
A specialist financial adviser in the long term care market would be able to help at this time; amongst other things explaining the care and benefits system, advice in relation to the care contract and the options available for paying for care. This could include paying from capital, investing to provide an income, a tailored care fee plan or a combination of all of these.
An even better option would be to take advice in good time to ensure that your assets are held as efficiently as possible to minimise the impact of care costs.
If you would like to know more about long term care please contact us for a copy of our brochure ‘Paying for Care’ which expands on the points discussed above.

Wrexham's Olympic medal rowers have been honoured in a civic reception outside the town's Guildhall.Double gold winner Tom James and silver medallist Chris Bartley, both 28, were welcomed home in a public event at Llwyn Isaf.Bartley said the event was special as his parents had been unable to attend the huge athletes' parade in London after the Games. Both men said they hoped to compete in the next Olympics in Rio in 2016.Bartley from Farndon became the first Welsh Olympic medallist at London 2012 with silver in the lightweight men's four.He had to be helped from his boat and then onto the medal podium, and later said that while happy with the achievement it had come with extreme pain. While James had an official gold post box painted in honour of his achievements, Bartley's friends covered his village post box in silver foil for fun.James, who grew up in Coedpoeth, is to be granted the freedom of Wrexham borough in recognition of his achievement at the London 2012 and Beijing 2008 Games, where he won gold with his team mates in the men's coxless four. Both had been pupils at King's School in Chester where they rowed.
Guard of honourWrexham's young sporting ambassadors and elite athletes formed a special guard of honour to escort the athletes to the Guildhall during the event. The rowers then received a civic welcome by the mayor before making an appearance on the balcony.Meanwhile, sporting clubs and associations from around the county borough provided demonstrations and tasters to encourage youngsters to take up sport.James and Bartley said they hoped to be fit enough to compete for a place in the next Olympics."It is a big thing for both myself and Chris to be honoured by our home town and we're both very grateful to the people of Wrexham for all the support they have given us," said James.

It is not unusual to find Woodpigeon squabs in the nest in October. Two eggs are the normal clutch size but their productivity is maximised with a twelve month breeding season. In the autumn vast flocks assemble to feed on stubble. 500+ recently at Honkley were accompanied by a small number of Stock Doves. These are slimmer and slighter than Woodpigeons with a strong bluish tint, dark wing bars and lacking the white neck ring. Buzzards and Tawny Owls are still accompanied by dependent young. A family of newly fledged Goldfinches visiting a Burton garden in late September was unusually late.
Honkley stubble fields also attracted a flock of Greylag geese accompanied by a much smaller whitish individual. This may have been a Bar-headed Goose. One was recorded on 9th September at the RSPB’s
Burton Mere Wetlands Reserve in Wirral. 11 days later it was on Gresford Flash. Bar-heads do not occur naturally in the U.K. but escaped birds from wildfowl collections have been around for some years. Another local escapee appearing from time to time at Gresford is an attractive little Ross’s Goose.
Now is the time to look out for winter visitors. Some, like Rossett’s Green Sandpiper which spent the past four winters near the River Alyn, come back to the same spot year after year. An Iceland Gull, known affectionately as “The Grand Old Man of Wallasey” spent 29 consecutive winters by the sewage outlet on New Brighton shore.
Long distance migrants can live for many years. One Welsh breeding bird, a Manx Shearwater, clocked up 51 years despite travelling to South America and back each winter. The average life expectation for garden birds is much shorter. For a Robin the estimate is 2 years as most do not survive the fledgling period. The British Trust for Ornithology has logged some of the garden oldies. The record for House Sparrow and Greenfinch is 12 years, 13 for a Great Tit , 16 for a Collared Dove , a Starling 17. and a Magpie 21.

In the last few editions of ‘Essentiallyours’, I have mentioned a couple of events which I had been busy organising over the past few months. The first event was the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme which has been set up on Springfield Lane, Marford. This scheme is being completed in phases and I am please to advise you that the first phase has been a success. We now have two new Neighbourhood Watches set up (they run from the railway bridge on Springfield Lane through to ‘The Spinney’). New signage has been erected, Neighbourhood Watch packs have been provided and local residents who signed up for the scheme were issued with ‘Smartwater’ which was received via a funding bid from PC Hazel Goss, who is North Wales Police’s Community Safety Officer. In time, I hope we can continue the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme further along Springfield Lane. If anyone is interested in setting up any other new Neighbourhood Watch scheme, please let me know. The second event I would like to inform you about is the environmental litter pick which took place at the Gresford Skate Park on Wednesday 8th August. We saw a very good turnout from local youths who really engaged in this event. I was able to secure funding from the Arson Reduction Team, which meant that the youths who took part in the litter pick were able to go on a Go-Karting trip arranged by the Gresford and
Marford Youth detached workers. We also welcomed a visit from North Wales Fire Service who brought along a fire engine. The crew spoke to the youths about the dangers of setting fire to rubbish and afterwards, all those present were allowed to have a tour of the engine, try on the equipment etc. Finally, the Gresford and Marford PACT (Police and Communities Together) meeting is scheduled for 1st October 2012 at the Gresford Memorial Hall at 5pm. The aim of the meeting is to identify local issues, discuss and work together to provide solutions. It also gives you an opportunity to speak to your local officer and Ward Councillor. Please don’t hesitate to contact us.Kind Regards, Wendy

TalkTalk invests a further £50,000 in Rossett to bring fast, reliable broadband and HomeSafe™ 27th September 2012: Rossett and Burton Village Hall has received a financial boost from TalkTalk, Britain’s value home phone and broadband provider. The Hall will be sponsored by TalkTalk for the next 12 months. The funding will be used to replace an old and unsafe fence within the grounds of the village hall to provide a safe play area for the local playgroup, parents and their children.
Residents in Rossett and surrounding areas will also benefit from a £50,000 investment by TalkTalk, which is expanding its Next Generation Network (NGN) to provide residents with access to fast, reliable, better value and more secure broadband. Built into the broadband network itself and unique to TalkTalk is the award winning network-level security service HomeSafe™. Homesafe gives customers control over the type of websites their household can access across every single device that connects to the internet in their home.
The Rossett and Burton Village Hall is run by a Management Committee. The hall is used every day of the week by a variety of user groups, e.g., playgroup and mums and toddlers, country market, dance and Zumba groups, a karate group, a dog trainer, a small church group, plus others.
Jeffrey Peet, Chair at Rossett and Burton Village Hall says:
“We are very pleased that TalkTalk has chosen to support Rossett and Burton Village Hall over the next twelve months. The funding will be used to replace an old and unsafe fence within the grounds of the Village Hall to provide a safe play area for the local playgroup, parents and their children”.
Tristia Clarke, Commercial Director at TalkTalk says:
“TalkTalk is at the forefront of developing new services for our customers. By investing in the exchange at Rossett, we will be able to bring our great value offers to even more families in the area, as well as access to our fantastic security service HomeSafe™. Rossett and Burton Village Hall plays an important role in the lives of many local residents and TalkTalk is delighted to be supporting them over the coming months”.
By installing TalkTalk’s own equipment in the local exchange, TalkTalk can offer even better value services and innovative products to its customers. The NGN enables speeds of up to 14mb and customers who have recently been upgraded to the new network, experience an average increase in broadband speed of 50%. It’s never been a better time to sign up to TalkTalk’s great value service with broadband packages now starting from only £3.25 a month.
TalkTalk’s Next Generation Network covers Rossett, Marford, Burton, Broadoak, Pulford and Trevalyn.

Lights out? With the dark nights coming, street lights are even more important. If you think there is a dark spot in the village, I will mention it at Community Council. Whilst I can’t promise a new light, your request will certainly get considered. If you know of any faulty lights (perhaps on all day or not working at all) I am happy to pass the information on, but you can report them directly by phoning Wrexham 298989, noting their location and the number on the light column where there is one.
Independent LivingWrexham County Council in partnership with Chester Care runs a service that can help vulnerable people live safely and independently for longer in their own home. They can summon assistance when needed and their relatives and carers feel more assured. Telecare Solutions For Independent Living provides a 24/7 - 365 days a year link to a response centre where a trained operator will ensure the right response is given. As well as the basic call-pendant or watch, they can provide heat extreme monitors, smoke detectors, a bogus-call button and more. If you think you or a relative/friend could benefit from their services I will pass any requests .Telecare can be contacted on 01978 292075 or via www.wrexham.gov.uk/telecare.
Affordable HousingI have been approached by the North Wales Housing Association who wish to build fifteen affordable housing units for rent, with an option to buy. The location they have selected is on the Old Wrexham Road opposite Oakfield Cottages. It is a variation from the Wrexham Local plan but NWHA claim it is a need and will be in a discrete area. I have not committed myself one way or the other as I sit on the planning committee. The plans for these will be out soon and the issue will be debated by the community council and environmental group IMAGE. I would welcome your views.

ChristmasSomeone has to be the first to mention it, so here goes! I have submitted a tentative order for the Christmas tree to be put in place outside Gresford Post Office. Together with colleagues from the community council, IMAGE and others, we are planning for our traditional carol concert by the tree. I will be in discussion with local businesses to see how we can celebrate and benefit as a community My early notice is to see if anyone has spare decorations suitable for an outside tree – if so please contact me on the above number.

Hormonal imbalance is showing up in men and women as early as the late 20's. Many people in their 30's are in unrecognized hormonal decline that saps their energy, causes weight gain, makes their thinking foggy, and people are experiencing record levels of depression, stress and sleeplessness.Even if you are exercising and eating less, high cortisol levels and low thyroid levels cause weight gain. Knowing what the major hormones do in the body and what happens when you start to lose them will make you aware of how critical they are to your overall health and well being. Cortisol production increases in response to any stress in the body, it is the body's survival mechanism. Cortisol is what allows a mother to lift up a car to save her child, and it is cortisol that gives us the clarity of mind, swiftness and co-ordination of movement, enhanced strength and courage we need to see our way out of threatening situations. Weight gain is a problem of low cortisol. People with fatigued adrenal glands from excessive production of cortisol tend to over eat as a way to bolster sagging energy levels. They frequently crave high calorie processed foods because those will prompt a quick energy release. Unfortunately, that quick energy boost is then followed by an even greater energy sag.
Cortisol can be controlled naturally by changing your lifestyles, diet and most of all not letting the little things annoy you, which in this day and age can be a challenge in itself. Another simple change can be made by simply turn off all lights in the room when sleeping, to make it as dark as possible.Cortisol secretion is promoted by the presence of even the tiniest bit of light. This is why it is so important to sleep in a room that is completely dark with no 'glow in the dark' alarm clock. When you hormones are under control then there will be no reason why you should not be shedding that unwanted weight, and all the effort you put in to your training will now start to show. My name is Jason, I'm a former professional athlete, and now a personal trainer. I specialise in effective training combined with the right diet to get results.I hope you enjoyed the information, however if you would like any help please do not hesitate to contact me on 07909300024.

FLOODING There has been no further flooding on Marford Hill, despite days of heavy rain. However, I have asked for the gulleys in the road to be kept clear. (A gulley is what I used to call a road drain). Those in Claypit Lane will be checked as they have to carry a lot of water to the soakaway in order to prevent a build-up of water in the road after heavy rainstorms.MARFORD PLAY AREA I am pleased to see how well the park is used! The piece of play equipment in the bottom corner is now fully functional again after a safety check was made by the manufacturer. The seats over which the hedges had grown should be useable again now that the hedges have been cut back.ROAD & PAVEMENT RESURFACINGFurther inspections have been carried out and although there are insufficient funds to resurface the section of Claypit Lane near to Chester Road in this financial year, the work will be done early next year. The footways in Woodlands Road will also be improved next year and the kerbs across the footpaths will be removed. However, Willow Drive, Hayfield Drive and Birch Drive are in this year’s programme for resurfacing. The rough patch in Chester Road near the pedestrian crossing will also be improved this year.MAES Y PANT / HOLLOWFIELD Large amounts of glass and litter have been collected by groups of volunteers who have spent two Sundays in the old quarry, trying to make it safer and tidier. Grants (including a very generous donation from Gresford Community Council) have made it possible for many of the footpaths to be laid out, as I am sure you have noticed. Some of the brushwood is being placed in rough piles to enable small animals such as hedgehogs to find a safe and warm place to spend the winter months.

essential gardening
This month brings a fantastic display for those gardens that have plants that give Autumn foliage. It usually brings a multitude of different hues. This month you really notice the change in temperature and the sudden shortness in daylight ( How depressing) but the days when sunny bring a sharp freshness.Maintenance: It is a great time to visit gardens that have Autumn colour such as Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire and Bedgebury Pinetum in Kent.Rake up fallen leaves and either place them on the compost or pile them up to make leaf mould. If you have not started clearing up its time you did, burn or bin any perennial weeds or debris that shows signs of fungal infection.Dig over empty beds. Finish planting evergreen shrubs. This is the best time of the year to take hardwood cuttings and collect any berries from trees and shrubs for seed sowing.Give conifer hedges a last trim for the winter sets in. Plants new climbers and perennials.Protect alpines from winter wet. Lift and store dahlias, glodioli and summer flowering bulbs.Tidy ponds and remove pumps for the winter. Make new lawns from turf. Cut down the dying tops of perennial vegetables.
Lift and divide rhubarb. If you have any fruit trees fix grease bands to there trunks to catch pest as they crawl up.
Insulate the greenhouse and if you have whitewashed remove it and if you don’t have a heater get one if you do have check that its in working order.
It is probably your last chance to sow grass seed. Finish off planting spring bedding for next year. Pick up the last of your apples and pears before they get damaged.
Lift and store the reminder of your tender perennials. Lift and store potatoes and carrots in a dry and darkish cool place.
You should start to prepare the ground for planting bare rooted stock for next month.Sow sweet peas for next year under cover.
It is best to do all the jobs in the garden sooner rather than later as with the shortening days you will only have the weekend to do things.
If you have heavy soils like clay make sure you dig them so the frosts, rain, wind and snow can break it down.
Incorporate as much organic matter as possible to improve the structure of the soil.
Plant trees at this time of the year while the soil is warm for the roots to take hold.
All this should keep you busy!

Hi Readers,
Sorry that my article was missing last month but I had just returned from a short holiday and I hadn’t unpacked my computer in time.
It has been a traumatic few weeks for me. The main blow was to be presented with a picture of Kira in her basket with Woody, her other neighbour, snuggled up next to her! I was completely mortified and can only assume that she was paid a considerable amount of money by a tabloid newspaper to warrant such a display of wanton abandonment!! She tells me that there is nothing in the relationship and it was just a moment of madness following over indulgence in the biscuit tin; however, I am yet to be convinced. My suspicions had been aroused for some time after I noticed that she had changed her perfume. I am giving Woody a wide berth at the moment until I consider my position. As a gentleman of refined breeding I shall not stoop to anything so low as putting pepper on his biscuits.
My camping trip to Shropshire was a great success and I found the local people around Ludlow to be very welcoming and dog-friendly. I was rather hoping that we would be there for the food festival. However, we
were a week too early. Full marks to the National Trust for welcoming canine visitors into the grounds of Croft Castle. They are experimenting with the idea for a year and I am sure that it will be a great success. After all, if we canines are allowed in, it goes without saying that our owners will follow!! (unless I’ve slipped my collar, of course!!)Life has been quiet since the Olympics and Paralympics finished and I do miss all the excitement coming from the television set during the events, with Himself cheering enthusiastically. I was hoping to have been invited to one of the closing ceremonies, however my invitation must have got lost in the post somewhere. Never mind, I still thoroughly enjoyed it all!I am not sure about the current trend of developing cross-bred dogs! I recently met a delightful creature that was a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle and I think was called a Cocker-Poo – or was it Cocker-Doodle??!! I was telling my friend Striker, who is a Yorkshireman. He said that sort of thing does his head in – thankfully the trend has not reached breeds of refinement. The very thought of a West Highland Terrier being crossed makes me shiver; the idea of a Westie-Poodle cross being called a West Hoodlum horrifies me. I could not imagine Kira being interested in anyone other than a pure bred. I think I will check Woody’s pedigree, as “Boofon Freezer” sounds an unusual name for a breed of dog……See you soon, Douglas

Tennis in Wrexham received an added boost this month as the refurbished Darland tennis courts in Rossett were officially unveiled.
Darland High School, Rossett Community Council and Wrexham County Borough Council have supported the £30,000 overhaul which has seen the courts re-surfaced, re-marked and new fencing erected around the perimeter in line with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) recommendations.
Graham Williams, Chair of Rossett Tennis Club said:
'We are a recently formed club that was established on the back of this development and we would encourage the local community to get involved. The new courts will help Rossett Tennis Club widen accessibility to the sport of tennis within the community, increase the provision of coaching to the community, and increase membership to the club. The new courts combined with community funding from Sport Wales mean that we are now able to provide additional coaching sessions for all ages. Without the support of the local community, Darland High School and Rossett Community Council, this project would not have been possible and our thanks go to them all'.Welcoming the refurbishment, Cllr Ken Dolan, Chair of Rossett Community Council said:
'The investment at Darland Tennis Courts is great news for the local community as it not only improves the playing surfaces
on the courts for existing players but it will attract new users from Rossett and the surrounding areas. The Darland tennis courts’ project has made the school a pivitol community hub for everyone to enjoy and I look forward to the new tennis season in the Spring.'
Peter Agnew, Headteacher at Darland High School said:
'These courts stand as testament to the power of the community and demonstrate what can be achieved through the perseverance of a dedicated group of individuals, strengthening the active partnership between school and community.'
If you are interested in joining Rossett Tennis Club or getting back into tennis, coaching sessions are available.
A planning meeting will take place on Monday 22nd October in the Conference Room at Darland High School at 6.30pm for anybody interesting in getting involved.

IPS have the solution! This article is for those of you who want to take control of your pension, are disillusioned with the traditional markets and the so called “management” of your investments and looking for a positive alternative that can be managed by you personally. I am a local business man who, after reading my personal pension statement 10 years ago, simply realised it was not going to be anywhere near enough to take care of my retirement unless I took immediate action.By the time I had calculated my annual pension charges and also taken annual inflation into consideration, my pension was actually going backwards – there just had to be another way.As there were no real alternative options available 10 years ago, I turned to property, froze my pension and decided that tangible assets were safer than anything linked to the stock market. Neither was I going to be hit with additional hidden costs that I had absolutely no control over. It was the best decision I have ever made as I now have personal control of my future & retirement.Today the world is an even more uncertain place and we all feel let down by the financial institutions, politicians and the so called “respected establishment”.No longer do we assume they know better, nor can we take comfort in feeling our money is being invested wisely. Many of us have already taken action believing there is a better way to than the traditional pension schemes and many more will follow. Today we have a real alternative called a SIPP

The benefit to you is that the majority of these products give fixed market beating returns.SIPPS were introduced in 1989 and since then we have seen over £75 Billion transferred from traditional pension funds by over 600,000 investors to this modern approach. A SIPP offers you many of the same benefits offered by a traditional pension and regulated in a similar way. However, additional benefits include: – • Freedom and flexibility to take control

Graham Lewis‘MAYOR OF ROSSETT’
In June this year, Rossett lost one of its unsung heroes - Graham Lewis. For many years Graham, together with his wife Gwenna, have been a perfect team running The Village Store in the centre of Rossett.Graham, born in Wrexham, together with Gwen who hails from Criccieth, made Rossett their home and gave untold help to so many people. Graham was the energetic force behind Gwen’s smiling face in the shop. Nothing was too much trouble for either of them. Graham acquired the title ‘Mayor of Rossett’ from his friends several
years ago which reinforced the love he had for the village and will never be forgotten. We hope Gwen and her son Paul, together with all who work in that special place, keep that feeling going strong in the difficult days, months and years to come. We are so grateful for their efforts on behalf of those who live in Rossett.Graham joins a company of village greats that we can all name, but for me during the past year the passing of Hilda Hastings, Nellie Smith and Bill Colwell, as well as Graham himself, has been hard to bear, but we know their influence will live on.

Thirty or so pilgrims set off from Gresford Methodist Church to follow the route around the two villages of Marford and Gresford one chilly Sunday afternoon in September. The event had been arranged by Beryl Blackmore and Gill Tanner, who had been to Iona last summer with Rev. Richard Sharples and several other Methodists from the Wrexham area.We wanted to look at our community and share with others some of the features in the area. We stopped at particular points and reflected, sang songs or read pieces appropriate to the place. We found the first Methodist meeting place - a cottage in Turnpike Lane -and spent some time in the parish church considering the beauty of the
building and remembering the miners who had died in the 1934 disaster at the colliery in Gresford. We made our way back to our church hall, somewhat cold and wet by this time, and were fortified by warm soup, crusty bread, sandwiches and cakes, together with copious cups of tea and chat!We finished the day with an Iona-style communion service in our church, led by Rev. Sharples, in which we handed the bread and wine to each other around a long table placed down the centre of the church. We hope those who came were helped to see their surroundings with new eyes and we hope to repeat the event again sometime.

Maes y Pant Goes NationalWell, things are happening at Maes -y-Pant. We’ve had two successful volunteer days already and we have a third planned for October 26 – 28 to tie in with the Wild Wales Weekend. This weekend is linked throughout the country by the ‘Keep Wales Tidy’ organisation. The main purpose for us is to prepare the ground for 420 saplings (or less if we run out of space) that we will be planting. These have been donated to us by the Woodland Trust. If you want to come along and help then keep your eyes open for fliers that will be posted in Gresford and Marford. The main day for this work will be Sunday October 28th starting at 10am, so at least, please come along then.
Talking of saplings, the BBC 1’s ‘The One Show’ has contacted us to say they would like to feature Maes y Pant in one of their Wednesday programmes. This will be in a section they are calling ‘BBC, The One Show to the Rescue’. The plan is to show how the ‘One Show’ has helped to drum up support for local initiatives, in this case – helping us to plant our saplings. The broadcast is to be shown live on Wednesday November 21 but there will be filming during the day and one or 2 days before, I believe. If you, or an organisation you know, want to get involved then please get in touch through the contacts below.
Progress with the footpaths has been slower than originally thought but the weather has been against us. The contractors, Lawtons, are working hard to meet the schedule. By the time you read this the Viewpoint path should have been completed and substantial progress made on the main footpath through the middle
of the site (Blue route). Come along and have a look. Don’t be put off by the locked gate. We will be tidying up the entrance next year, but at present entry is at the left hand side. A temporary Notice Board at the entrance includes a diagram of the main footpaths. The view from the viewpoint is stunning and we now have steps that mean you can walk up more easily .
We are buying 9 wooden bench seats to locate throughout the site. We thought it might be a nice idea to offer these to people who would like to sponsor us and dedicate a bench in memory of loved ones. We haven’t determined costs yet but it will be about £250. Again please let us know through the contacts below.
We are also setting up a core of volunteers who will undertake maintenance tasks on a routine basis. We’re planning to give training before letting people loose on this work, as well as supplying the right equipment. This activity will be in addition to the special volunteer days we’ve had or are planning, like the Wild Wales Weekend. Again please use the contact details if you are interested.
Last but not least we would like to thank Gresford Community Council for supporting our work. The Councils financial help has helped us match fund the work on the footpaths.
If you are interested in any of the matters above please contact Trevor Britton (tel: 855266) [email protected] or Sue Kelly (tel: 854469) [email protected] and for more information don’t forget our website on www.maes-y-pant.com.

Kick-off for Football ExhibitionFans of Wrexham FC are able to relive some of the club’s historic moments at Wrexham Museum.
‘Wrexham Is The Name’ is the title of the new exhibition about the history of Wrexham FC that has just opened at Wrexham County Borough Museum & Archives.
The title of the exhibition comes from the song written in 1978 by Vic Blackwell at the height of the Robins’ success when they topped the old Division 3. Blackwell recorded ‘Wrexham Is The Name’ with the help of the James-Lambert singers, local musicians and fans of the club.
The new exhibition tells the story of Wrexham Football Club from its foundation in 1864 just one year after the rules of association football were first agreed right up to the present day.
The highlight of the exhibition is the Welsh Cup trophy, of which Wrexham are the 23-time winners. Wrexham won the first Welsh Cup final in 1878 before the cup even existed. It is a very rare occasion that the original trophy leaves the care of the Football Association of Wales, who have very kindly lent it to Wrexham Museum for the exhibition. Other objects from Wrexham’s football heritage include:
• A shower from the old changing rooms at the Racecourse
• The Memorandum of Association of the club, from 1912
• The FAW Intermediate Challenge Cup
• The Shopshire Reds Shirt Collection
• Welsh cup winners tankards, 1970-71 and 1977-78
• Winners plaque from the 1948 tour to Allied occupied Germany
The exhibition breaks new ground being the first time that staff at the museum have worked with a group of local students to design all the graphics for the interpretation in the gallery, and for the promotional material for the exhibition around the town centre, the County Borough and online.
Four students from Glyndwr University: Gareth ‘Hugo’ Hughes, John Hayward, Arron Williamson and Liam Higgins volunteered their time and skills in computer graphics and design to work on the project.
The exhibition is on show at Wrexham County Borough Museum & Archives until 5th January 2013. Admission is free. Opening times: Monday - Friday 10am - 5pm, Saturday 10.30am - 3pm. For more information, call 01978 297 460

Yet again after many months I have made the effort to make my way down Croeshowell Lane to post a birthday card but still no post box!! Without a car and unable to walk to the next one what are we supposed to do?
Come on Douglas can’t you get ‘’Himself’’ to do something? He probably hasn’t suffered the absence of our facility that we rely upon! How much longer please? Will we have to wait until the thieves are caught to get it back? Are we the forgotten people here?

ROSSETT PUBLIC TOILETS - CONCERNS
These toilets are unmanned but all the necessary facilities are available to the public.
On several recent occasions some person/s has/have been filling the toilet bowls with all the available toilet paper and operating the flush.
This does not remove the paper which results in the bowl and sewer pipe becoming blocked. (I will not elaborate on this but you can imagine what actually happens)
The toilet attendant then has the thankless job of clearing up the mess. Not the most pleasant off tasks.
Resulting from this abuse of an essential facility by an act of unsociable behaviour, Rossett Community Council has decided that, unless this practice ceases the toilets will be closed until the culprit is identified and brought to justice.
Brian Doyle Rossett Community Council
As a resident of Burton, I enjoy the local surroundings we live in and strive to maintain and wherever possible make improvements for all within the neighbourhood to enjoy. I therefore find it disappointing when some residents show a lack of respect and cause damage by simple thoughtlessness.I enclose a picture of the grassed area and memorial seat to the late Councillor Shepherd and wish you to print it to highlight the damage caused by ignoring a road closure sign and driving unlawfully over the grass verge. Another local councillor, my partner and I have taken time and trouble to plant daffodil bulbs around the village for all to enjoy in the Spring months however, the likelihood is, that in this area, these have now been damaged. On a separate matter I feel I must mention the amount of litter my partner and I pick up on a regular basis from Rosemary Lane. Recently we filled a large refuse bag with litter from this area alone. As a local councillor I have been party to securing the installation of two litter bins on Rosemary Lane and hope in the future these will be used in order to maintain the local environment.A small amount of thought and consideration could help to keep our neighbourhood a better, cleaner and more pleasant place for us and our children to enjoy and live in.Community Councillor, Peter Cade
