What kind of world do we live in? The opportunities that are available to us these days is truly amazing. The internet with the facility to speak to people all over the world in seconds and so cost effectively, and the fact that you can up sticks and go and live in another European country at the drop of a hat. Whether or not you condone these things you have to admit it’s impressive.

The world has really been opened up to us, but is it a good thing? Populations have increased over the years, and there is now so much of everything, I’m just confused by it all if I’m honest. I can’t say I’ve embraced Facebook and twitter, but do love my mobile phone so I can receive calls and messages on the move. I remember reading an article in a newspaper and the guy writing the article was frustrated by all the emails he gets from companies that pretend to know him, address him by his first name and ask how he is today. Really made me chuckle as that’s something that annoys me, millions of emails from large companies trying to flog me their products, using my name as if they know me.

your life, your home, your community.

On the darker side of the world we live in, and in the news recently was the girl that had acid thrown over her face on her way home from work for no apparent reason. We hear of random attacks like this more times than I care to imagine and sometimes it’s for reasons such as people proving themselves to be accepted into gangs. The mind boggles.

Bigger isn’t always better, again in the news recently are the large food companies not knowing what is in the products they are offering. Horse meat springs to mind! You would think in this regulated and sophisticated world we live in there would be sufficient quality checking processes to protect us from this.

This didn’t happen years ago when our parents were young. What a shame we can’t have that old fashioned world with its more traditional values, a safer world, and the technology of today. Is it possible to have a compromise like this that would work.?

In my eyes that’s one of the beauties of village life, and living in an area like ours, we are blessed that we are relatively still village like and long may it continue!

All the best, Jill

On April 20th, 2005, Nicola Riley, the only child of Steve and Debbie Riley, lost her battle with the brain tumour that had first been diagnosed three years earlier. She would have turned 15 just five days later. Having had an amazing time on a trip to America, arranged by 'Wish Upon a Star', to swim with the dolphins she loved so much, Nicola typically turned her thoughts to children who might not be so lucky as to have that experience. When she was on her flight home, she asked her mother 'What happens for the children who are too sick to go abroad in a plane?' And so Nicola's Fund was born – its prime objective to give the families of children with cancer a holiday at Centre Parcs, a holiday in which they would escape the misery of treatment for a rare week and share some laughter, have some fun and create those precious, lasting memories. To date, the charity have enabled some 300 local families to enjoy a week's holiday. Staffed entirely by volunteers, there is a busy calendar of fund-raising events throughout the year, some of them annual events. • On 2nd March, they will be holding

a “Winter Blues” Dinner and Dance evening at the Queen’s Hotel, Chester which aims to shake off the miserable weather and have a wonderful evening of music, dancing and excellent food.

• The annual Pied Piper walk will this year feature a Teddy Bear’s picnic. IT take place at Chester Race Course on 17th March. Anyone can join us for a fun-filled sponsored walk which this year takes place on St. Patrick’s Day.

Nicola's Fund

• On April 28th, everyone is invited to copy Bradley Wiggins and take part in Le Tour d’Anglesey, a bike ride for families which will end with a celebratory BBQ.

• Later in the year, a Zumbathon will take place at The Hammond, on Sunday 3rd October 2013. This is a fun dance/exercise class suitable for all ages.

• The annual Christmas Fayre is a favourite festive event at The Grosvenor Arms, Pulford, featuring real reindeer as well as a variety of stalls selling Christmas cards, goodies and luxury presents for all ages.

• The Nicola’s Fund Ball is a bi-annual black tie event. The next ball will be held at the Chester Race Course on 1st March 2014.

Every penny raised goes straight to what the Fund does best – helping children, and helping families cope during their darkest times.

During January there have been more Blackbirds in gardens than usual. There are two reasons for this. The first is that a number of these are winter visitors. The 300 Redwings and Fieldfares at Almere on 5th January which we only see at this time of year are obviously migrants but we are so used to having Blackbirds around in every month that we assume the ones frequenting our gardens are the regular residents. Ringing returns indicate that there is a considerable invasion from northern and central Europe as harsh weather sets in and food becomes hard to find. The second reason for seeing fewer Blackbirds during Spring and Summer is that, like many other species, when breeding they are territorial and space themselves out to avoid competition. It is interesting that among the local sightings males seem to outnumber females. Typically in mid-January a group of 11 in our back garden was made up of 8 males and 5 females. That we should see more males is curious because many male migratory birds are sedentary and remain in breeding areas during winter to retain territory. The 18th century naturalist Linnaeus named the Chaffinch “bachelor finch” (Fringilla coelebs) because he used to see all-male flocks during the Swedish winter when the females had left for southern climes.

Unusually large numbers of Coal Tits have also been in gardens recently. They are attracted to seed feeders because last year’s prolonged wet

weather meant that conifer cones did not open properly and these little birds have been forced out of pine and spruce plantations to find food elsewhere. The British Trust for Ornithology reports that there have been more Coal Tits at garden feeders this winter than at any time during the past 17 years. Coal Tits are among the birds that cache food for later use. If you watch them visiting feeders you may notice that having collected an item of food they then fly off and bury it. Apparently they can remember what they have done with it for up to four weeks.

In Gresford there have been 16 Shovelers on the Flash and the Mandarin ducks are back on the lake.

Reads Flooring is a family run local business, specializing in the supply and installation of quality flooring products, or happy to just supply only.Established in 1999 Neil Read entered the flooring trade and has not looked back since, starting off as a sub contractor for flooring firms around North Wales, then progressing to sole trader, offering a home selection service, where Neil would take samples of laminate and wood flooring to clients homes. Although this was successful, it was sometimes difficult for customers to get an idea of how the flooring was going to look on a bigger scale. A showroom was always going to be the next step forward for Reads Flooring. So in late 2012 Reads Flooring took the next step forward and have pleasure in announcing they now have a state of the art showroom, over 100m2 of laminate/engineered and solid wood flooring, exactly where it should be - on the floor !They have brand names like Quick Step/Elka/Bausen/Haro/Junckers/ and are also suppliers of under floor heating. They have highly skilled fitters accredited by The Guild Of Master Craftsmen and qualified by The Quick Step Flooring Academy. As Master Installers they can give a free 2 year installation warranty with every Quick Step Flooring Installation, adding peace of mind to you, our customers.

Reads Flooring We would like to send our congratulations to an organisation which uses our Memorial Hall for its classes and offers fun-filled multi-sports experiences for children aged two to ten years. It is called A-Star Sports and it was awarded the winner of the Guardian’s small business network best practice exchange. The organisation was also voted the nation’s best new activity for children on ‘What’s On 4 Junior Awards 2012’We welcome all enquiries about Gresford Trust - visit our website www.gresfordtrust.org - or call 01978 85 6650.

GRESFORD AND MARFORD NEWSAll Saints Church in Gresford hosted a coffee morning to mark Christian Unity Week which raised £166 for Christian Aid. Members from Gresford Methodist Church joined the parish church members for the event.Gresford Methodist Church raised £379.37 over the Christmas period for the Welsh Air Ambulance Service. This was achieved by carol singing in the village, collections from some of the Christmas services and a lunch following the morning service at the end of the Christmas season. Beryl Blackmore, well known in the area, has been awarded a Community Award for 2012 by Park Hampers. The prize included a weekend at the Thornton Hotel and Spa on the Wirral. The champagne dinner was hosted by Coleen Nolan. Beryl was also treated to a personal shopper and £150 to spend in Debenhams, as well as a make-over by Clinique, also in Debenhams.A tribute well-deserved by a lady who works tirelessly for many causes in this part of North Wales.

Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent. Although it’s often called “Mother’s Day” it has no connection with the American festival of that name.

Traditionally, it was a day when children, mainly daughters, who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother and family.

Today it is a day when children give presents, flowers, and cards to their mothers.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Most Sundays in the year churchgoers in England worship at their nearest parish or “daughter church”.

Centuries ago it was considered important for people to return to their home or “mother” church once a year. So each year in the middle of Lent, everyone would visit their “mother” church, or the main church or Cathedral of the area. Inevitably the return to the “mother” church became an occasion for family reunions when children who were working away returned home.

And most historians think that it was the return to the “Mother” church which led to the tradition of children, particularly those working as domestic servants, or as apprentices, being given the day off to visit their mother and family.

As they walked along the country lanes, children would pick wild flowers or violets to take to church or give to their mother as a small gift.

FLOODING The recent run of bad weather has highlighted a number of problem areas within the ward. The major problem is at the junction with Darland Lane and Gamford Lane. As a result of problems in the autumn I held on site meetings with Welsh Water and officers of WCBC. Welsh Water have recently carried out investigations using cameras and I had planned a public meeting in Darland School to bring all parties together with residents. That meeting had to be postponed due to the snow resulting in Full Council being cancelled and moved to the date that I had arranged for the meeting. I will rearrange the meeting, in the meantime I am exerting maximum pressure on Welsh Water and the Council to find a solution.

Several parties of Rosemary Lane and Burton Hall Road have been flooded and I arranged for Streetscene to clean out ditches to improve the flow of water. More work needs to be done to ensure that we resolve these issues.

Gamford Lane Speed Limit. I am pleased to say that at last we have extended the 30mph

limit to cover the residential area of Gamford Lane.

Manor Lane. After numerous meetings we are moving toward reaching a

satisfactory solution to the style of street lighting. It is

now down to the developers to agree and fit appropriate

lighting.

CHESTER ROAD The resurfacing of part of Chester Road is due

to start on February 10th and last for 4 weeks. I appreciate that this will cause disruption but I have received numerous complaints in the past year regarding the state of the road surface and the work is urgently needed. The current plan is not to replace the cycleway.

OWL On Line Watch Link. OWL is an innovative community watch scheme by which we can report and receive information relating to criminal activities either in our own Village or across the County Borough. This is a regional scheme across North Wales and has won numerous awards, its aims include increasing public awareness of criminal activity, giving guidance as to how we can prevent crime and to provide information and reassurance to us in our own homes. If you have internet access it is worth looking at www.owl.co.uk/northwales It is this strong focus on crime prevention that has helped reduce the number of reported crimes across our community.

NEW PCSO A welcome to Troy Williams who is our new PSCO. He recently organised a successful cycle marking event in Darland Sports Hall. You can contact him on 07775 220480.

PUBLIC TOILETS I am supporting the Community Council in their decision to close the toilets on the Green. Having spent nearly £25,000 on refurbishing them, only for them to be abused is unacceptable. There is evidence that the damage has been caused by young people. Sadly the community suffers due to a few badly behaved individuals.

As always I can be contacted on 01244 571747 or [email protected].

SAY NO TO THE BIG BOYSIs nothing sacred these days? Well apparently not, not even the Red Lion car park at the top of Marford Hill. You may be surprised to learn that an application has been made for the Red Lion car park in Marford to host a retail/convenience store. No specific supermarket chain has been associated with the application officially, however, it is expected to be one of the big 4 who have EXPRESSed an interest in putting a smaller local type store on the site.Whilst I would forgive you all momentarily for briefly thinking that might be handy, I would like you to consider the bigger picture. As you can imagine local businesses are concerned they will suffer a loss of business as a result of a potential national supermarket chain coming into our villages. That one store could offer products and services that would affect several of our retailers in the local area and would we then be left with empty and boarded up shops in our villages? I dread to think.Additionally do we really want a modern eyesore on the main route up Marford Hill.

After all we are a village! Once we allow stores like this into our villages we really will lose our sought after nature, our appeal, and this might sound a bit dramatic but our overall identity too, and we’ll become just like everywhere else. I can’t imagine it would do our local house prices much good either. There’ll be delivery wagons coming and going, cars exiting the bypass at peak times to visit the store that probably wouldn’t normally do so. Not only that, the road safety around that area will be called into question, and how much increased traffic will this result in?The application is anticipated to be presented for a decision at the planning committee in March. And whilst its early days and the planning application might not be granted we cannot sit back and see what happens. Please support your local businesses and villages and say no to this application through the facebook page:www.facebook.com/savemarfordfromsupermarketsweep

Gresford Handbell Ringing Team has been in existence since 1975 when George and Norah Randles, both eminent tower bell ringers at All Saints’ Church, decided to purchase 3 octaves of handbells from the Whitechapel Foundry, London. This was in following of an ancient tradition which began in the 1600s when the first handbells were cast in Britain ad quickly became popular among tower bell ringers for playing both simple tunes and practising change ringing. As the available range of handbells increased, the art of tune ringing was developed to such an extent that handbell teams or choirs were formed separately from tower bell ringing teams, playing more complicated musical scores using large numbers of bells.

I was fortunate to join Gresford Handbell Ringers in 1989, becoming musical director in 1990 when Norah Randles retired. Since then the team has steadily increased from 8 to 17 ringers and the number of handbells now covers 5 octaves. We perform a wide range of musical genres,

from classical to popular music, for a wide variety of audiences. The team belongs to the National Society of Handbell Ringers of Great Britain, and meet together with other teams in the North West region for a rally twice a year. In addition to this we are always busy practising for and giving concerts at W.I. meetings, garden centres, weddings, garden parties, restaurants (many thanks to Alan at the Golden Lion in Rossett who gave us a generous donation when we played Christmas Carols there in December!) plus numerous charity performances in residential care homes, Nightingale House, church concerts and other fund raising events

Although we’ll never become one of the 7 Wonders of Wales like All Saints’ Tower bells, we all thoroughly enjoy playing handbells together and sharing our love of music-making with so many people around the Gresford and Wrexham area.

Jill Roberts. Musical Director

A special antiques and collectables valuation event will be taking place soon in your area. The experts of Lockdales Auctioneers will be providing free valuations to the public on Friday 8th March, 10am-2pm, at Wrexham Memorial Hall, Bodhyfryd, Wrexham, Clwyd, North Wales, LL12 7AG.

There will be specialists providing valuations on the following types of collectables: Coins, stamps, banknotes, medals & militaria, clocks, watches, gold, silver, pre-1900 documents/books & maps, cigarette-cards, postcards, pre-1960 sports programmes & tickets, scientific instruments, antiques, objects of virtue, swords, bayonets & de-activated weapons. No appointment is necessary.Members of the public will have the option, if they wish, to consign their goods to auction (subject to terms & conditions). Cash purchase offers are also available. Valuations will be provided free of charge without obligation. High quality illustrated catalogues from previous auctions will be given away on a complimentary basis in order for the public to get a better idea of the services available. These valuation days have proved to be very popular in the past, and we have conducted hundreds of them all across the UK. Earlier this year two pieces of Russian 17th century enamelled silverware, a bowl and a lidded pot, were brought along to one of our events. We later sold them at auction, on behalf of the family, for over £75,000. You never know what your old heirlooms could be worth! If you have any questions feel free to contact Lockdales’ Martlesham offices: 01473 218588, [email protected]. A belated Happy New Year from MyPAG. We hope those who visited Maes-y-Pant over Christmas and the New Year enjoyed it. This must be one of the wettest winters on record, which is delaying the completion of the footpaths, so we hope you didn’t get too bogged down on the parts we haven’t finished. Lawtons, the contractors, are cracking on now, so fingers crossed for better weather as we want to complete the paths by the end of February. We have lots of New Year resolutions about getting things done. During February, new fences will be installed at the Whiteway Drive entrance and inside the main entrance on Pant Lane (which will also have new gates). The existing security fence at Pant Lane will remain for the time being but we do intend to remove it before long. Waymarkers will be sited at various points around the site, and interpretation boards featuring pictures painted by local schoolchildren will be installed. A panorama stone structure will be built at the viewing point at the top of the footsteps. We plan to take the Quarryman sculpture away for safe keeping but he will be returned, near to the new entrance gate at Pant Lane, affixed to a specially designed plinth from Rossett based sculptor, Simon O’Rourke.

We are also planning to install nine benches on the site over the next few weeks. Eight of these have been sponsored by local families and groups: plaques will be affixed to the benches in acknowledgement of the donations. One bench remains available for sponsorship. Anyone interested in sponsoring this final bench, please contact Sue Kelly on 01978 854469, [email protected] We are also looking for volunteers who can give up some of their time and get some exercise as well. We are setting up a small team of volunteers to do routine maintenance in the coming years. The tasks will include ensuring footpaths are clear and safe, checking trees for safety, cutting back undergrowth and monitoring wildlife habitats on site. One of the tasks planned is to re-open a former footpath from the Pant Lane entrance to the viewing point to complete a circular walk. There will be a Training Day on February 24, but further events will be organised.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Trevor Britton on 01978 855266, email [email protected]

Recent news articles about beefburgers sold in the UK and Ireland have raised a lot of questions for meat eaters. While there is no risk to health, it is still shocking that without carefully considering the origins of our food we really have no idea what we may be eating. What else is lurking in there that we don’t know about? There are so many reasons to shop locally - quality produce at affordable prices, traceability, low food miles and supporting local traders and farmers are just a few.Local producers are seeing some of the most difficult trading conditions that we have seen in decades. The reason we survive – quality produce, knowledgeable staff and loyal customers. One of the most difficult challenges for local producers is the fact that supermarkets and big-name firms can always produce food which is cheaper for the customer BUT do you know what you’re buying?Recent news suggests that we don’t always know what mass-produced, cheaper products contain. When you go out to eat, don’t be afraid to ask where the meat has come from. A good manager or chef will be proud to say

that their meat products have been sourced locally.

If you want to know exactly what you are eating then buy locally. At Jones Brothers Farm Shop we have fully trained staff on hand to offer information and advice on the origins of your meat, the ingredients in your sausages and much more.

At Jones Brothers our aim is, and always has been, to offer locally-sourced, high quality food at reasonable prices.

In addition to a wide range of meats we also offer a selection of locally-sourced dairy products and fresh fruit and vegetables.

We have an i m p r e s s i v e selection of award-winning sausages which we make ourselves, creating traditional flavours as well as experimenting with new blends

It’s February already and all those well intentions and New Year resolutions seem to have been made such a while ago!Perhaps some of our readers made a promise to themselves to ‘sort out their finances’ (or even sort their paperwork drawer!) and this is where we think we can help. For the months of February and March we are offering a no obligation financial review at our Wrexham office every Wednesday between 8.00 am and 7.00 pm (for the early risers and night owls).

Currently the following 5 areas are perhaps the most popular topics where we are helping:• ISA Planning – Tax year end is some 7

weeks away. Have you looked to use this year’s allowance or are you going to miss the opportunity to save or invest tax efficiently?

• Pension Planning – As usual plenty of changes and plenty of opportunities in this area. Would you like to review your pensions, improve your understanding of what they might provide for you and compare their performance over the last few years?

• Savings and Investments – There is a saying that ‘knowledge is king’. If you have perhaps ISA’s, Bonds (perhaps With

Profits Bonds?) or regular savings plans do you know if they are at the top of the tree, somewhere in the middle or languishing at the bottom? Would you like to find out?

• Inheritance Planning – Would you like to consider how to use gifting opportunities (to gift towards your children or grandchildren) effectively? Would you like to review your current arrangements to try to ensure the threat of Inheritance Tax is reduced?

• Long Term Care Planning – This may be of interest to you, your parents or your grandparents (or all of you). Would you like to ensure that you are making the best possible arrangements to protect your home and capital? Surely an area worth spending an hour considering?

Of course, your priority area may be something different. We are very confident that one of our team of qualified advisers will be able to assist.

If you would like to make an appointment please call Kate or Angela on 01978 311611 or email [email protected] and we will look forward to meeting you.

Wednesday’s in February or March may never have been so useful!

Road surfacesWhilst I was pleased that some of my own resurfacing priorities were completed last year, this has highlighted some further issues which I shall continue to pursue.

That said, once the wet stuff and the white stuff have done their worst I shall be having a walk around to assess any new priorities. Although tight budgets mean that I can’t guarantee they will be done, if you have any thoughts do let me know.

Gresford LibraryA council scrutiny report has identified that Gresford Library in its current location won’t meet the library standards as set by the Welsh Government.

My arguments that closure without replacement is unacceptable have been recognised, so we are looking for a suitable location. I have already commenced discussions on one possible community-based option and these discussions will be gathering pace. I am glad to hear and discuss any options and ideas you may have.

Cut-back on WelfareWhilst being careful what I say, the changes to welfare (among them the so called “bedroom tax”) agreed by the Westminster government will come in very soon. These will have a potentially huge effect on Wrexham Council and our residents. I know that our housing office staff have done sterling work in meeting over 1600 council residents across the borough but if you have any queries or concerns you can ring the hot-line on 0800 0855 808. Advice on the changes along with information on other linked organisations such as CAB can be found by going onto the council website www.wrexham.gov.uk and type in welfare reform. Further information can be sought from the Welfare Rights Unit Advice Line on 01978 298255 or [email protected].

Finally, I intend to hold an advice surgery in the

village along with a suitable expert in mid-late March 2013 and will inform you all of time, date and place.

Village improvementsSome time ago, the Community Council commissioned a report on improving the look, safety and (hopefully) the economic activity of Gresford shopping area. Now, along with environmental group IMAGE, they have financed further work and a steering committee of “representatives” of interested parties has been set up. They will look at various ideas with the assistance of qualified urban planners and hopefully later this year will have some options or ideas for further consultation. I will keep you posted when the fruits of our labours are ripening.

Summer’s coming - make the most of it! After a long, wet summer and autumn last year and a dreary winter, everyone must be looking forward to warmer days and longer evenings. Now’s the time to plan ahead. Why not try your hand at croquet? Perhaps you have played garden croquet with family or friends and would like to learn more about the game. Perhaps you have hung up your boots after playing a more strenuous sport and would like to switch to a game that involves challenge and skill but does not require the strength and stamina of more energetic activities. Perhaps the children have left home and you find you have more time for a new outdoor leisure activity. Perhaps you have just retired and would like to try something new. With its handicapping system, croquet is a game that can be played and enjoyed on equal terms by men and women of all ages and abilities.

Chester Croquet Club meets in Westminster Park off Hough Green in Chester. It is a friendly and successful club with about a hundred members and is always pleased to welcome new members of all standards from absolute beginners to more experienced players. The next beginners' course will be held on Thursday evenings from 6.30 to 8.30 pm for six weeks from 2 May to 6 June 2013. The fee for the course is £30 but is free for new members joining the club at a full subscription of £52. Coaching is also available for people who have played before and would like to improve their skills. No previous knowledge of the game is needed and all equipment will be provided by the club. The only requirement is that players must wear flat-soled shoes. If you would like to enroll or would like more information, please contact the course coach, Janet Davies, on 01244 350370.Come and join in and make the most of the summer.

Keen readers of my article will observe that this is my first offering for 2013, so a belated Happy New Year to you all. The absence of a January submission was partly due to the fact that Himself had another of his brainwaves - that we should go camping over the New Year holiday to the Lake District. I don’t think that I have ever been so wet in my life and it poured down from the moment we arrived until the moment we left. Actually I had a great time but I won’t admit that to Himself, as I like to play the guilt card!! The success was partly due to the fact that the friends we went with had a very attractive Staffordshire Bull Terrier called Ziggy. During the time there we took a run out to the shopping centre at Gretna Green and Ziggy and I tagged along (at least it was dry there!). Imagine what Kira would have said if I had phoned her up to tell her I was a Gretna Green with another female. Needless to say I resisted the temptation!Since returning home I have thoroughly enjoyed myself in the January snow. Like a lot of fellow canines, I have been told

that it takes years off my life. Gone is the slowly plodding, constantly sniffing Douglas and welcome to the new turbo-charged version – seen to be leaping around the fields like a young pup! I know many would disagree with me but let’s hope we have some more before the winter is over! I did struggle a bit in the snow drifts at the top of Hope Mountain and my nether regions got a bit chilled – but nothing that couldn’t be sorted out with a nice warm towel and a cosy basket (courtesy of Kira)when I got home.

I was very disappointed not to have received a personal invitation to a Burns’ Night Supper this year and for some reason I seem to have been left off the list. I had already planned my outfit for the evening and Striker and I had been practising the recitation of some appropriate Scottish verse! Never mind, to try and console me, I notice Himself has got a haggis in the fridge so I shall look forward to tucking into that and toasting the occasion with a ‘wee dram’ in my water bowl. How civilised a nation we Scots are on such matters……

Bye for now folks!

Just a few jobs to keep you up to date in the garden area - spring is on the way!

General Care - Spread mulch this month before plants get too large. Use a thick layer of compost, pulverised bark or similar material over borders and between trees, shrubs, roses and fruit. This can be applied up to 5cm to 7.5cm (2in to 3in) thick, if you have sufficient material. Newly emerging perennials should grow up through it. Take care not to cover dwarf bulbs, such as winter aconites, now in flower.

Order seeds - An impressive range of new varieties of flowers and vegetables can be found, so do complement your tried and tested favourites. Remember to store seed packets in a cool and dry place, such as in a sandwich box in your fridge, until ready for sowing.

Covering soil with a large sheet of clear polythene, held down with lengths of wood or bricks, will help keep heavy rain off so the soil remains dry and workable. Simply roll back the sheet to continue digging when you get time, replacing the polythene afterwards. This is particularly useful for heavy or clay soils. Also use polythene to warm the soil for early sowings. A single layer left in place for a couple of weeks can raise the soil temperature by a few degrees. This will help to encourage rapid germination and establishment. Composting - Even if you don’t get time to start the winter digging, try and cover areas to be dug with a layer of compost or manure. This will be worked in by worms over time, or it can be lightly forked in to the surface in spring to prepare the soil for planting.

I read in the Wrexham Leader that schools are struggling to increase the number of children taking school meals and this seems a good time to invite you to sample them; Sylvana , the cook at The Rofft School, provides the meals for the Luncheon Club. The next meal is on 19th February and then 5th March - book on 01978 855691 by the Friday before (you can leave a message). The cost is £5 for two courses plus tea/coffee. Lunch is 12-30 pm .We have men and women enjoying the social side as much as the meal. The Theatre Group, I think, will need to change its name to ‘The Adventure Group ‘! We are going for a trip on the Northern Belle (the sister train to The Orient Express) for a ‘Brief Encounter’ on May 24th. We leave Chester at 6pm, returning at midnight. There’s a champagne dinner, half a bottle of wine and a visit to Carnforth Station to see the 1940s era exhibition from Brief Encounter. Elegant wear is recommended for the ladies and black tie for gents (as part of their suit I hasten to add!). Access for passengers with special needs is assured. The cost is £200 per person. I know this is a lot, but as the description says it is ‘a journey like no other ‘. Get in touch ASAP if this interests you.In 2014 a number of us are really going to push the boat out; well, no the train again actually. We are hoping to book ‘A Great

Rail Journey’. Anyone interested can meet after lunch on March 5th to get an idea of numbers and where to go..... exciting times! Delmar Travel in the village will help us plan the trip. There is no excuse to be lonely in Marford or Gresford. We welcome people at our clubs with open arms. Please come and join us. Get in touch if you think there is more to be done to make sure we are looking after each other in our communities. Take Care (just a note on care - I bought some ice grippers for my shoes. COMMUNITY COUNCIL WEBSITEThe website www.gresford.org.uk has been completely revised. The Community Council would like to make their site as informative as possible and would be happy to include details of local businesses and voluntary organisations. I hope as many local people as possible use this site and help keep it up to date with news, dates of meetings and details of what is happening in our villages.PLANNING APPLICATIONSI have not been told at which planning meeting the application concerning the Red Lion car park will be heard, but I am pleased that so many people have expressed their views to the Planning Officer. The Planning Committee will visit the site of the old antique shop opposite the Plough in Gresford on the afternoon of 15th February to decide if the plans for that site should be accepted.MARFORD & GRESFORD LUNCHEON CLUBThere is still some more work to be done at the Community Centre, which already looks better outside. The little meeting room has been tidied up, so it is now available for use by small groups.MAES-Y-PANTWork is progressing with laying the paths despite the bad weather. As well as the ones laid with hard-core, there will also be some less formal paths. These will need clearing and maintaining by volunteers. If you can help, the website has details of how to contact us. Signs showing where the paths lead to will be set up soon.PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGI am regularly told of incidents at the pedestrian crossing at the top of Marford Hill,

whereby traffic has not stopped in order to allow people to walk safely across the road. Please send me an email if you have stepped on to the crossing and a vehicle has failed to give way for you. Details such as the date, the time of day and the direction of the vehicle etc. will help.If you have sufficient information about a dangerous incident please ring the police on 101.ROADS AND PAVEMENTSPotholes appear at this time of year and we need to sort them out quickly to avoid damage to our cars. Please report them to the Council on their website www.wrexham.gov.uk (click “report it”) or by ringing 01978 298989. It is also a useful way of reporting dog fouling, graffiti or fly tipping.STREET LIGHTSI am sorry that the light outside the Rofft School has taken so long to get reconnected. It is frustrating when the council erected the light quickly but we then have to wait a long time for the electricity company to do their part. If you know of anywhere where a street light would make it safer at night, please contact me.As your Councillor in the Marford and Hoseley area, I look forward to hearing from you.

mailboxSupermarket sweepI feel that Marford is viewed by both Gresford and Rossett as a slightly dim whited little brother which has to be looked after because it can’t look after itself. The opposition to the proposed Tesco’s is mainly from the Spar in Rossett and Gresford which believe they have a right to be the only shop serving the community. It was explained to me by one Gresford resident that a Tesco’s would close the Spar and then where would the elderly of Gresford who couldn’t walk to Marford by their food. My answer was simple. The elderly of Gresford would have to do what the elderly of Marford have to do now, go without. Memories are short. I can remember when Gresford had a Thresher, but then the Spar decided to sell alcohol. Gresford used to have two newsagents. That did not stop the Spar selling newspapers. The Spar does not care about local businesses so why are we as a village so worried about Tesco’s. Is it that we prefer to pay £1.99 for a bottle of pop, or 20 pence extra for our milk. I have to admit that I have become quite fond of playing hunt the fresh loaf of bread which is much harder than you would imagine. Gresford’s shopping parade is ugly and dangerous. The Spar and it’s neighbours haven’t spent one penny of their profits on smartening up the area instead they bicker between themselves about parking spaces. On the other side of the road are three great shops. Without the Spar I firmly believe that the newsagents would do more business. The Chemist and the Post Office are bomb proof and the new off license would see an increase in sales.A decent shop is just what Marford needs and it’s time that Gresford and Rossett accept that Marford has every right to have its own shop. I do feel for the owners of those properties on Wynnstay Lane that would back on to the Tesco’s and for those people alone I would concede there is a real reason why they should object and for their objections to be listened to. Rossett and Gresford have no right to object to plans which would benefit the residents of Marford. And as for our local magazine supporting the objections, I wonder whether the editorial judgment is based on keeping its advertisers sweet. Yoursa life long resident of Gresford, Marford and Rossett.

Supermarket sweep - replyDear local residentOn behalf of the local businesses we are disappointed to read your comments and the fact that you support the planning application for a retail convenience store in Marford. Some of us live in Marford and certainly don’t feel it is seen as a dim witted little brother by its neighbouring villages. There are 3 convenience stores serving the community, which we feel works well, and don’t forget we have all been there for years working alongside each other. I don’t think any of the convenience stores feel they have a right to be the only store serving the community. Between us we provide all daily essentials and I doubt that we are seriously short of daily necessities to justify a fourth convenience store. I suppose the people in Marford are used to not having their own shop on their doorstep as it’s always been like that, so I do feel it would be different if a facility was taken away for the people of Gresford.Of course there is competition in the villages, but on a small controllable scale, and not on the level of the large multi nationals. A mini supermarket offering in one place on a more than ‘dabbling’ scale what 5 smaller shops offer is severely damaging. With regard the village itself the local Gresford Group IMAGE are looking at improving the village centre under a scheme called ‘Thriving Villages’ so we hope that the village centre will be given a face lift with the help of this scheme. A new mini supermarket is not the answer here, but perhaps we need to implement some changes if that’s what it takes to satisfy those residents that support the planning application. However, I sincerely hope you are alone in this view.Thank you for airing your view and I hope you will reconsider and support us to protect our village status.Yours sincerely, local businesses

Gresford village centreENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT STUDY

A vision to improve the environment of Gresford Village centre has been on the cards for some time, but following a successful application for funding to Gresford Community Council this is now moving a step closer !A study has been commissioned by Image, and BCAL ( Chartered Landscape Architects ) have been appointed to develop ideas for the improvement of the centre. BCAL have had some preliminary discussions on the opportunities and issues, and are now starting to produce plans and sketches for further discussion with Image. It is essential that the proposals improve not only the Village environment but make life easier for those who live and work there. The sort of things being considered are – improvements to car parking to make dropping in to the shops easier and safer, better surfacing and signage, and creating more of a village atmosphere along Chester Road. As soon as the proposals are ready a public exhibition will be held to allow feedback from the general community.
