Apologies for lastmonth's mis-information of 1,700houses coming toPulford. I must begoing senile in my oldage, managing to mixup the Wrexhamroad development on

the other side of the roundabout!

Spring is here and it's getting warmer, I'mpleased to say. As you start to think aboutholidays, I thought I'd share my recentexperience with you to help save youfrom a holiday nightmare. I'd booked aweekend away recently to go to theCosta del Sol in the South of Spain, andwas flying from Liverpool airport toMalaga. I'd booked the flights online viaEasyjet, but when I went to check inonline the week before, I kept getting anerror message.

No surprise as I'm hardly a whizz on theinternet! I rang the call centre to be toldit was our browser and to just check in at the airport. When we turned up at theairport we were told we were on standbyas the flight was fully booked. I couldn'tbelieve it as I'd booked and paid for theseats some six weeks earlier. The lady atthe check-in told me that Easyjet doublebook seats as policy because on averagethe number of no-shows per flight is fiveper cent, and they can make more moneyby doing this.

Still, I was wondering why me! I thought I couldn't have been the last person to

book, so it doesn't work on a last-in first-out system. From what I can gather, if youpay extra to reserve your seats youshould be able to check-in online and allshould be fine. Just booking and paying(no matter how far in advance) is notquite good enough it seems. In our case, everyone turned up for the flight and wecouldn't get on. Their policy is then tooffer you a replacement route which forus was Gatwick to Seville the followingday. I'm sure I don't need to comment onthe suitability of the option! Failing that, you get a refund for your flight and somestandard compensation, which could fallshort of actual costs depending on hotelsand hire cars etc.

More to the point, I was amazed that thisis legal, as it seems highly unethical andeven deceitful - especially as they are nothonest and up front about it! The staff at Liverpool airport told me people hadbeen falling victim to this system everyother day recently, so it seems thatEasyjet’s gambling policy is not working at the moment.

Please take extra care when bookingflights; even though not all airlines do this, quite a few do and I'd hate for anyone to have their holiday ruined.

Anyway I'm looking forward to seeing youall while I'm out and about delivering nowthe days are lighter , longer and warmer.

Who needs Spain!

All the best, Jill

Meteorite memories

Perhaps some readers will remember theold garage that used to be near theSt.Martins turning off the old A483 beforethe new Wrexham to Oswestry by-pass wasbuilt? I used to pass by quite frequently, butone day I noticed a large object covered bya tarpaulin on the forecourt. It seemed tobe there for ages, so, wondering if there wasa motoring story in it, I called in and askedthe proprietor, Mr Jerman, what it was.“It’s a 1924 Meteorite- want to have alook?” I replied “I certainly do!” and hepulled the tarpaulin off to reveal the scantremains of an old car. “It might look aheap of junk, but it is probably the onlyone of its kind in the world.” he said.

Apparently, Meteorite Motors Ltd. were oneof the many companies to get in on thehorseless carriage boom before WW1, onlyto fade into obscurity during the years ofdepression immediately following it. Formedin 1912, the company produced an 8 h.p. V-twin J.A.P. engined car as its first venture, but ultimately 10.8 h.p. four cylinder and 20h.p. six cylinder cars were manufactured. In1921, Meteorite Motors became MeteoriteCars Ltd., but the change of name did notbring good fortune, for three years laterproduction came to a halt.

This particular model was in very poorshape indeed. The radiator and bonnet weremissing; the wings and wheels were badly

rusted and the two seater drophead coupébody, with dickey seat by Strachan andBrown ,was very battered indeed. At leastthe four cylinder Coventry Simplex engine, gearbox and chassis were intact. “Are youREALLY going to restore that rustyheap?” I asked. “Yes, I’ll get around to itsome day!” he replied with a smile.

Many years later, I was asked to go andphotograph it again, and I was astonished bythe transformation from a heap of junk toa rare and gleaming vintage car- as you willsee by the attached photographs. I wonderwhere it is now?

After the garage closed down, Mr Jermanopened a vintage and antique centre inLlangollen, and when I visited it, he had amost interesting item for sale. It was asmall piece of aluminium about half an inchsquare, nailed to the top of a small woodenstand about six inches high. The plaque onthe base told that the aluminium was fromthe German Zeppelin which had been shotdown in flames over Potters Bar, London, in1917. The asking price was too high for thelittle piece of aluminium, and I seem toremember it being said that lots of otherlittle pieces of aluminium on little standswere sold in the area, that certainly hadn’tcome from the Zeppelin, being a nice littleearner for the local ‘wide boys’- so I didn’tbuy it!

As I sit here writing away at the end of March, with a gale blowing outside and the rainpelting against the window, I am reminded of the ramblings of an equally famous fellowwriter, one Thomas Fuller, who in his 1732musing entitled ‘Gnomologia Wise Sentencesand Witty Adages’, wrote ‘March comes in likea lion and goes out like a lamb’. Well, youcould have fooled me! For a start, the lambscame at the beginning of March and as forlions, the nearest I have seen is the gingerpussycat whom I call Eileen. Well from where I am sitting, it appears to be neither wise nor witty.

Ah well - who am I, a mere Scottish scribe, tochallenge the logic of renowned humans.Regular readers will know that I scratch myhead when it comes to understanding humans.Perhaps that is something to do with having toput up with Himself for all these years.

However, I have been away on my ‘it’s notSpring break’, staying with my Auntie Avril inthat refined part of the world called “Wirral”.For some reason it is like Ynys Mon - you haveto say on the Wirral and on Anglesey, not in.Well, back to my break: Auntie Avril is an avidhistorian and member of the Richard the ThirdSociety, so you can guess that my week hasbeen spent glued to the screen watching theevents in Leicestershire. An interestingcharacter who was once Chief Justice ofNorth Wales, but of concern to me was the

The diary of Douglas the Westie

fact he was also Commander in Chief againstthe Scots - obviously not a nice man!

The more discerning of my readers will beaware that we are about to embark on ageneral election and I was reading an article ina high quality newspaper (what else) aboutpolitical parties seeking celebrityendorsements. This got me thinking about howmy psephological dispositions might be ofinterest to the different parties. If I play mycards right, I might even be granted a peerage- Lord Douglas of Rossett sounds quite grand, and an ermine cloak would keep me warm onthese cold days. I quite fancy lazing on thoseplush red benches. I could make my maidenspeech on retirement pensions fordistinguished canines.

Talking of pensions, at long last Himself hasagreed to provide me with a pension. As I amnow at the equivalent of 80 years in humanterms I feel that it is time to take life a littleeasier. Constantly being in the public spotlightcan take its toll and perhaps going out at thetop is not a bad thing. So as I announce myretirement. I will take my cue from Larry King‘it’s not so much good bye but so long’ with a big thank you to all my followers and well-wishers.

A Matter of Trust

Since we wrote last month we havehad the Budget and by next monththe General Election will be history. We plan to write more when thingshave settled down a bit on both areas.

Today, let's take a look at the subjectof Trusts.

First the basics. Any adult can set up a Trust (providing they have mentalcapacity) to in effect ensure thatcertain assets are handled as theywould wish them to be during theirlifetime or after their death.

The parties to a Trust are - the Settlor(who is the person setting it up andusually owns the asset), the Trustees -who will look after the Trust (andusually includes the Settlor) and theBeneficiaries - who will one dayreceive the benefit of the Trust.

Here are a few examples - and acomment on the benefits of each;

1) Dave and Danielle - have eachtaken out a life policy to protect theiryoung family, which would pay out alump sum if either of them were topass away. The policies are held in a

simple trust to ensure that fundswould be quickly available for thefamily without the need for Probateand without forming part of theirestate for tax purposes. They havealso decided who their Trusteeswould be to look after the funds fortheir children for both policies, shouldthey both pass away. (How manyreaders have life policies which are not held in Trust?).

2) Walter, who was widowed, hasrecently remarried. He has created a Will Property Trust which allows hissecond wife Theresa to live in hisproperty for the rest of her life in theevent of his death. On Theresa's death(or if she went into care) theproperty would thereafter be ownedby Walter's own children.

3) Bob and Rita have built upsubstantial funds, saving and investingeffectively over many years. Bob has abig salary and has decided to protecthis employers Death In Service coverby using an Asset Preservation Trust. If Bob were to die, the pensiontrustees would pay the lump sum dueinto the trust for Rita to use as shewished. Importantly this stops the

Page 21: Essentials Mag Rossett April 2015

• Investment Planning• Retirement Planning• Specialised Insurance• Tax Planning• Mortgages

funds becoming part of Rita's estatewhere they could be subject toInheritance Tax at 40% in years tocome.

The above are just the basics of a fewpopular trusts. There are many moreincluding arrangements that allow youto put investments into Trusts foryour chosen beneficiaries now andkeep the income they generate duringyour lifetime, safe in the knowledgethat you know who will one daybenefit from your planning.

Lastly, a word about DiscretionaryTrusts and Absolute Trusts.

Discretionary Trusts allow the Settlorto choose Trustees at the outset andamend them as you see fit as timegoes by. You can also add or remove

beneficiaries giving you good controlduring your lifetime.

An Absolute Trust is very different.Once you choose beneficiaries - theycannot be changed. Not seen as often- but occasionally useful to providefor children/grandchildren that youwish to be the only potentialbeneficiaries of the asset in question.

We are very happy to discuss yourparticular needs and how one of thewide range of Trusts available canmake a very real difference to yourfuture planning. If you would like tospend an hour or so considering youroptions please do call or email toarrange a meeting.

Trusts are not regulated by theFinancial Conduct Authority.

I amvery sceptical about the likelihood of powershifting from Cardiff to local county orcommunity councils and the lack of aboundary commission means that changesin communities over the last 50 years willbe ignored.

North Wales Police would like toremind residents to be aware of‘cold callers.’

Doorstep crime can take a number offorms but is carried out by criminals whodeliberately target the most vulnerablemembers of our communities.

Unfortunately these days, not everyone whocalls at your door is who they seem. So, youshould always be on your guard. The personstood on your doorstep could be alegitimate caller, a rogue trader, or even adistraction burglar. But don't worry. If youread on and always follow our three-stepplan, you'll know exactly what to do.

And remember - genuine callers won't mindwaiting whilst you make the appropriatechecks.

The Three Step Plan:

Remember genuine callers will not mindwaiting. It's your home. You don't have to let anyone in!

One: If in doubt, keep them out. It sounds simple, but if you don't let someone in - they willgo away. Don't let them pressure you intoopening the door.

Lisa Davies

Police Advice

Two: Be prepared. Be in control. Think aboutwhat to say to doorstep cold callers inadvance. And keep a list of key contactnumbers near your phone so you can checkout legitimate callers. Ask all otherunwanted callers to go away.

Three: Call a neighbour or the police. Contact alocal relative or nominated neighbour whocan help verify a cold caller. If you thinksomeone is a rogue trader, call North WalesPolice on 101. To report a distractionburglar or rogue trader who has taken yourmoney and is still in the area - call 999.

If you do happen to get caught off-guardand a cold caller does manage to get intoyour house, let us know about it as soon aspossible. There's nothing to be embarrassedabout, and the sooner we know about it,the better chance we have of catching themand recovering your property.

North Wales Police work closely with localauthority Trading Standards’ Teams and localpartnerships to reduce this type of crime.

If you would like further information oradvice, please contact a member of yourlocal Community Safety Team via 101.

The work on the A55 / A483 pinch pointscheme has unfortunately been delayed.

This is a complex junction widening andtechnology project, which has alreadydelivered two new sets of traffic lights onthe A483 junction and replaced a miniroundabout. The current completion datefor the project is mid May but we aredoing everything we can to make sure thework can be completed sooner ifpossible.

The delay has been caused by problemswith drainage and bridge strengtheningwork, as well as the weather. Weunderstand the frustrations felt by driversexperiencing delays at the junction andwe are working closely with ourcontractors to minimise delays in thearea.

Drivers travelling between Chester andWrexham are being urged to avoid theroundabout that links the A55 to theA483 while work takes place to upgradethe junction. Drivers travelling to andfrom the southern part of Chester arebeing encouraged to use the A534 andthe A41 while the lane closures are inplace.

Drivers heading to and from the northernpart of the city can use the A550, A55,A494 and M56 as an alternative route.

The concert, which will include musical support fromDarland School, is on April 25th at 19.00prompt and tickets are available at the VillageStore, Golden Lion, Hair by Nia and Spa. Thiswill be a great evening in support of ourVillage Hall which is continually beingimproved, thanks to a small group ofhardworking volunteers.

Wrexham Development Plan. The Plan is currently under development itselfand will be going out to public consultationlater in the year. One of the major issues isthe provision of housing land which is beingforced upon us by the Welsh Government.Their requirement is for us to provide land forbetween 10,100 and 13,000 homes betweennow and 2028. It is clear that there isinsufficient brown field and urban land withinthe County Borough and that expansion ofexisting settlements will need to take place. My main concern for Rossett is to protect thegreen barrier that exists between Lavister andPulford. Additionally we need to ensure thatany new development does not impact on thecharacter of the village. Footpaths.Following on from my observations last monthon the former Darland Golf Course, I havereceived a number of queries about thefootpath. The designated footpath route,ALL16, follows the original path as currentlyindicated on the WCBC footpath map. Theformer owner applied for a re-route which isnot now proceeding. The long-awaited wastebin at the Darland Lane end of the footpathwill be installed shortly.

B5102.I am reasonably optimistic that the temporary40 mph speed limit will become permanentonce the diversions are ended. Havingpersuaded our highways officers of the needfor it with the increased traffic, I amrepresenting that it makes sense to create apermanent speed limit along this stretch.

Homoeopathic case study

I often get children in my clinics and one ofthe most common reasons they come tosee me is because of eczema. This is acondition with which even conventionalmedicine struggles.

Eighteen months ago, a seven year old girl(SC) arrived in my London clinic with oneof the worst cases of eczema I have everseen. I felt heartily sorry for her as the dryskin and lesions that covered most of herbody were painful and distressing. Hermother had tried everything and had cometo a homeopath out of desperation.

SC was small for her age. She had longblonde hair and pale blue eyes. She was veryshy and clingy with her Mum.

The main facts that emergedabout her were:

• Her skin problems began when shestarted nursery at the age of 2 and a half.

• She is better in company and can be quitemanipulative when she wants attention

• All her life she has suffered recurrent earabscesses

• She is a bed-wetter• She hates being hot and prefers to beoutside in the fresh air

• She loves cheese and eggs and cold food, but hates anything greasy

• She scratches in bed at night andsometimes makes her skin bleed

I opened her case with a constitutionalremedy as the underlying cause of hersymptoms appeared to be emotional. Herskin was clear until she started nurseryschool and was separated from Mum.

Advertising FeatureThe Misery of Itchy Skin, by Carol Jones

SC presented a classic pulsatilla picturewhich I prescribed for four weeks.

Six weeks later when SC walked throughthe door, there was a noticeable change. Shewas more confident and less clingy with herMum and her skin was less ‘angry’. She hadbeen much calmer since taking the remedyand less anxious about being at school. Shehad also stopped wetting the bed.

Other changes were:

• Her appetite had increased and she wasdrinking more

• The burning in her skin had got worse at night

• Some of the patches of eczema hadbecome moist and crusty

It was clear at this point that her emotionalstate had calmed down but the symptompicture had changed to another remedy. Iprescribed a very low dose of sulphur to betaken daily. This continued for severalmonths while her skin gradually improved.

After ten months she needed another doseof her constitutional remedy and this prettymuch cleared her skin.

I have not seen SC for six months, but arecent phone call from Mum confirmed shewas settled and happy at school and herskin is fine. She still has a couple of patchesof scar tissue but these are fading.

Anti-social behaviourRevised powers have recently beenintroduced by the Ant-Social BehaviourCrime and Policing Act 2014 which aredesigned to help local authorities and thepolice deal more effectively with issues inthis area.

A new order associated with this is theCommunity Protection Notice (CPN),which can be issued to tackle persistentproblems that affect communities in anegative way. Another measure is the PublicSpaces Protection Order (PSPO) that canimpose restrictions to address a range ofissues in public spaces. In particular, aCommunity Trigger is set whereby victimsof anti-social behaviour can get a casereview when reports of such behaviourreach a locally determined threshold. Thishas been set at three in Wrexham andreports can be directed to local councillorsand the police either directly, by email orvia the 101 telephone number.

Recycle with MichaelI have been around long enough toremember the days when the amountrecycled in Wrexham was 3-4% and Waleslagged behind other areas. Now a dozenyears later our recycling rate is 55% andWales is an exemplar to the rest of theUnited Kingdom thanks to the dedication of you all. It is worth noting that each tonneof waste that goes to landfill costs theratepayer £20 so your efforts also save youmoney.

The next ambitious target is to increase thisto 70% and Wrexham Council are lookingat the optimum use of its refuse vehiclesand have been doing some trials ofcollection systems. There will soon be some

County Councillor for Gresford

changes to the way our rubbish is collected,in particular to do with cardboard where it is acknowledged there can be someconfusion. I will ensure that you are keptinformed of how you can help with thisambitious aim.

Council Budget Councillor Mike Edwards raised someinteresting thoughts about the communitycouncil precept and I would widen thatdebate to the Wrexham Council budget.

No-one really wants extra strain on theirresources but if they can see this preventingharsher cuts, it is a legitimate question forthe wider public to consider. It couldempower communities such as those in theEssentials area to run and have a say in localfacilities or to keep the vulnerable andelderly independent.

As the council develops its 2016-2017budget I will look to involve you in thisdebate.

We bought Machine House in April2012 (time flies!) and, as they say onprime time TV, what a journey it’sbeen so far! Our highlights? How aboutthe day James Bond came for lunch? Orgetting into the UK Michelin guide? Or theday the BBC came in to film us in our lycra(don’t ask!)

When we made the decision to re-open thebuilding as a local restaurant back in 2012we had a vision for what we wanted tooffer our guests - ‘Local, Fresh & Seasonal’food, prepared extremely well and served in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere; a localrestaurant for a quick mid-week supper or a weekend celebration - pretty simplereally!

We’ve recently taken this idea one stagefurther and adopted a new style of menu;all our dishes are now chalked on menuboards around the restaurant, giving thekitchen the flexibility to be ultra-seasonaland use the best available produce fromweek to week. It also means we can offerlunchtime and midweek specials for thosewanting a quick lunch or hearty supper.

Our Head Chef, Adam (a local Llangollen boywho’s trained in some of the world’s finestrestaurant kitchens around the world in Dubai,

Sydney and the Maldives amongst others, andwho now lives in Gresford) is passionate aboutcooking with the best fresh produce aroundand Victoria, who heads up our Front ofHouse is all about making sure every guestenjoys their visit. As I say, we like to keep it simple!

A massive ‘Thank You’ to everyone who’svisited since 2012 and in terms of futureplans… who knows! We’re hoping to dosomething exciting with the Cottage thisyear (the large white empty building withthe signs on!) and we’re looking at optionsfor more of a bar menu during the week…watch this space!

A final message? We’re a localrestaurant/bar and we’re not just for specialoccasions - if you’ve heard about us andhaven’t given us a try yet, give me a ring andI’ll book you in, we’d love to see you!

Bowel Cancer Support North Waleswas set up a year ago by three peoplewith colorectal cancer. Whilst the carefrom doctors and nurses was excellent, through diagnosis and treatment wemissed an opportunity to talk with fellowpatients about their experiences. So wedecided to create the first self-help groupfor colorectal cancer in North Wales.

We launched our group last April, duringNational Bowel Cancer Awarenessmonth. We had the help and support of local health professionals as well asMacmillan, who gave us a start-up grant. This paid for our initial publicity andleaflets, insurance and room rental for the first year.

From that small beginning we have grownfrom a membership of 8 to a currenttotal of 25, 17 of whom are regularattenders. Our information leaflet is givento every newly-diagnosed patient by thecolorectal team, and it is encouraging tosee new members steadily increasing, particularly those at an early stage oftreatment.

We meet on the first Thursday of eachmonth, from 7.00 - 9.00pm at theWynnstay Arms Hotel, Wrexham and our aim is to support anyone affected by bowel cancer: patient, carer, family or friend.

The meetings provide opportunities forgeneral discussion in a friendly andconfidential setting. We also invite guestspeakers and over the last year topics

Many thanks for considering includingmy daughter Abbie’s Charity walk to thesummit of Tryfan.

Im not sure how much detail you wouldlike, but if I explain a bit about it hopefullyyou will have enough. Feel free to contactme if you need any more information.

Abbie is nine years old and goes to theRofft School in Marford. She has a friend in school who has had care from Alder HeyChildren’s Hospital and it was her idea totry to raise money. She wanted somethingchallenging, and after much discussionsettled on hiking to the summit of Tryfan at 3010 feet. As she also loves baking, she isgoing to eat some of her home-made cakewhile up there! We are aiming for 23rd May,but of course this is weather dependent.

The 'Just Giving' page that I have set up hasbeen live for about 4 days and we havepassed £400 already. Its address iswww.justgiving.com/abbieslongwalk butcan be found at www.justgiving.com if yousearch for Abbie Bellis Hollway.

Even a small donation is increased if the 'gift aid' button is pressed and anyone withchildren could come to rely on this fantastichospital at some point.

Long-tailed Tits' nests are remarkableexamples of avian architecture.Apartfrom the intricacy of their constructionthey are unusual in being flexible andcapable of expansion to accommodategrowing families of fledglings as theyincrease in size. At times a nest mayprovide night-time shelter for as many asten chicks as well as the two parent birds.

These elastic nests are constructed ofmoss, lichen, hair and rootlets beautifullywoven together with the particularcomponent that gives them flexibility andpotential for expansion - spider's webs. The lining of the ball-shaped nest (roughlythe size of a big orange) consists of ahuge number of feathers. One nest wasfound to contain up to 2,000.

Long-tailed Tits used to be known as"Bottle Tits" on account of the shape oftheir nests which resemble old-fashionedoval bottles with a small opening near thetop. Building takes up to three weeks andis carried out by both parents. This yearour garden pair started to build on 17thFebruary. On 6th March one bird wasfound dead and the nest abandoned.Much to our surprise work was resumedten days later. The surviving partner hadfound another mate which simply tookover where the dead bird left off.

Following the breeding season Long-tailedTits are gregarious and gather in familygroups which may include as many as 40birds. It is not unusual for group members

Hugh LinnLocal Birds & Wildlife

to fill vacancies following a death or joinin feeding fledglings.

By now most regular Spring migrants havearrived and settled in for the summer.Sand Martins, Chiffchaffs and Wheatearsare usually the first to appear, followedlater by Swallows, House Martins andother warbler species. One summervisitor now rarely encountered locally isthe Cuckoo. The Lapwing is another oncefamiliar farmland bird that has becomescarce as a breeding species although theyare not uncommon as winter visitors andpassage migrants. Other waders passingthrough recently included four Snipe nearCook's Bridge and a pair of Curlews atBorras.
