ThehistoryofPurworejoisfirstrecordedonKayuAraHiwanginscriptionin5October901,whichisbeingfoundinBoroWetanVillage.[1]Theareawasoriginallyknownbythename'Bagelen'(read/bagln/)anditisnowbecomeasmallerpartofthewholePurworejoregency.Inthe9thcenturies,BagelenispartofthehistoryoftheancientMataramHinducivilization(See:MedangKingdom)whichwasflourishedonKeduPlain.ItisestimatedthatwithintheperiodofRakaiWatukaraDyahBalitung,BagelenhadbecomethecapitaloftheMataramHinduKingdomorthatitistheoriginofthekingasWatukaraisarivernameinBagelen.TheancientartifactbeingfoundinBagelenisKayuAraHiwanginscriptionwhichexplainShimaceremony.Atthatperiod,whenanewlandisbeingopenedforeconomicorreligioususe,therewillbeaceremonybeingheldbytheauthorities,namelyShimaceremony.Theauthoritiesmentionedintheinscriptionare:SangRatuBajra,whoisallegedlyasRakryanMahamantri/MapatihHinoSriDaksottamaBahubajrapratipaksaya,whoisalsothebrotherinlawofRakaiWatukuraDyahBalitungandwhoisalsolaterbecameBalitung'ssuccessor.Theceremonymentionsthatthelandisbeingfreedfromanytaxduty,butithastheobligationtomaintainthe

holinessofasacredplacecalled"parahiyangan"(whichmeanstheplaceofGods).TheceremonyalsopurifiedtheareaofKayuAraHiwangofanyevil'sinfluence.KayuAraHiwangareaitselfconsistsofricefields,savanna,cavesandarableland.ThecavementionedintheinscriptionisidentifiedasSeplawanCave,whereashivagoldstatueisbeingfoundandthereforethesecondartifactwithinBagelenarea.Withinthisperiod,BagelenbecameareligiouscenterwheresomeBuddhistmonks(andoftenskilledwithmartialarts)wereprobablylivedalongtheBogowontoriverbanks.

Duringthisperiod,thepeopleofBagelenisfamousforbecomingthespecialarmsforceforSutawijaya,hencethebeginningofitsmilitaristiccharacterwhichalsosaidasinheritanceofthemartialartskillsbeinginstilledbythepreviousBuddhistmonksfromtheancientMataramperiod.

DutchColonialPeriod(16th19thAD)

Duringthisperiod,BagelenareawasnotoriousofitspowerfulinsurgentwhichsupportPrinceDiponegorothroughoutJavaWar.UponthedefeatofDiponegoro,BagelenwasbeingaskedfromMataramSultanateinordertounderminethepowerofBagelen'sinsurgentandwasbeingintegratedintoKeduResidencybytheDutchColonialruler.Thenewtown,calledPoerworedjo(newspelling:Purworejo)isbeingdesignedbyaDutcharchitectbyadoptingtraditionalJavanesearchitectureandtradition.TheDutchimplementedindirectrule,whichisreflectedinitstownarchitecture,wheretheregentisfromthelocalleader(RadenAdipatiCokronegoroPertama)andthecoruler(theregentassistant)isalwaysaDutch.ThisnewtownwasalsoservedasDutchmilitarybasecampwhichhousedtheDutchBlackColonialArmedForcesfromWestAfrica.SomeDutchresidentswereborn,livedanddiedinPurworejo,therecordscanbefoundinTheCivilRegistryoftheDutchEastIndies.[2]SomeDutchcolonialbuildingsarestillinagoodshapeuntilnowasofRegencyOfficialHouse(1840),achurchwhichstillbecomeGPIBChurch(1879),Kweekschool(1915),TrainStation,Bank,Hospital.Duringthisperiod,therewere2mainreligiousfigures:aMoslempreacher(mubaligh)kyaiImamPuraandaJavaneseChristianEvangelist,KyaiSadrach.ThisistheevidencethatinPurworejo,MoslemandChristiansarebeingacceptedharmoniouslybyitspeople.

ModernIndonesianperiod

InthemoderndayIndonesia,Purworejoproduceskilledworkforceintheareaofgovernment,educationandmilitary.TheprominentgeneralfromPurworejoisSarwoEdhieWibowowhoisalsothefatherinlawofPresidentSusiloBambangYudhoyono.Therearealsoseveralothernotablegeneralarmsforces,governmentofficials,ministersandlecturersasbeinglistedinthenotablesfromPurworejo.Purworejoisrecentlymorewellknownasthetownofretirement.AstheeconomicandgovernmentactivitiesofmodernIndonesiaiscenteredinJakarta,PurworejocitizenaremajorityurgedtoworkinJakartaorinotherpartsofIndonesiaorevenworldwide.However,thereisalsoanurgeforPurworejocitizentorepatriateandtobuildretirementresidencesinPurworejo.Becauseofitsreputationasretirementtowninthemodernday,itsinheritanceasaDutchtownanditsancientinheritanceofBuddhistreligiouscenter,Purworejoisrelativelyapeacefultownwithvastmainroads,bigoldtreesonbothsides,regularsquaresoftownblocksanditspreservedDutchbuildings.ThewiderareaofPurworejomainlyhasagricultureandlivestockactivitieswhilesomemediumsized,exportorientedindustrialactivities(traditionalfurniture,textileandsportsequipment)isbeingestablishedinthesouthernpartoftheregion.
