PAWS Wants You to Please Support Bill HB-710

House Bill 710 - the Breeder Registration Bill - will be heard in the House Agriculture Committee on Thursday, May 15th! Important legislation, House Bill 710 - the Breeder Registration Bill - will be heard in the House Agriculture Committee on Thursday, May 15th. This bill will go a long way in beginning to address the horrible pet overpopulation that cripples shelters across Louisiana. Please consider contacting members of the Committee and ask them to support this important bill. And, of course, please share with others who care about the health and well-being of animals in Louisiana.HB 710 requires registration of facilities with 10 or more breeding females. The license would be paid to the Parish Clerk or animal control agency providing funding for the additional cost of enforcement. The license would be a minimum of $30 but could be higher if parishes choose to increase it. If passed, HB 710 – the breeder registration bill – will be a huge step for animal welfare in our state.Abstract: HB 710 – the Breeder Registration Bill “Requires professional, commercial breeders with 10 or more female dogs to register annually with and provide kennel’s name and location, the applicant’s tax identification number, contracted veterinarian’s name, and an annual inspection to the local parish clerk’s office.”

Words to GROW by!GOOD POLLINATION ESSENTIAL FOR MANY

GARDEN VEGETABLESMost gardeners hope that home-grown vegetables come off the vine perfect in every way. That’s why most people have a vegetable garden. They not only want produce fresher than they can find in the supermarket, but they also enjoy picking it at the peak of perfection.Perfect fruit starts with good pollination and growing conditions. Conversely, poor pollination is often the reason for misshapen fruit or no fruit set at all. Some plants, like sweet corn, are wind-pollinated. The wind carries the pollen from the tassel to the silks. Each silk must receive a pollen grain for the kernel to fill. To achieve a good ear of corn, plant in blocky patches rather than in single rows. With this configuration, pollen from neighboring plants can help the pollination process.Vine crops such as cucumbers, watermelons, squash and others are pollinated by insects. For fruit development, the insects must transfer pollen from male to female flowers. If the insects are not present, or it there is only one gender of flower present, generally you won’t get satisfactory fruit set. Insecticides can be disastrous to setting vine-crop fruit if applied during the morning or peak of the day while the flowers are wide open. Pesticides should be used late in the afternoon after bee activity has slowed. This way bees are not killed by freshly laid chemicals that fall inside the flowers. The third category of plants are pollinated by a system that uses both insects and wind. A slight breeze or disturbance by an insect on a complete flower (both genders in each) shakes pollen onto the female flower part and causes pollination.Such environmental condition as rain, cold, wind or hot and dry weather also will create problems with flower development or pollen activity and pollination. Some diseases attack flowers and block pollination. These are more of concern in greenhouses or damp areas. Sometimes it is what gardeners’ do that creates barriers to nature at work. Crowded plantings, high or low extremes of fertilization and inconsistent sources of water also can lead to unsatisfactory fruiting.

CARPENTER BEES ACTIVE AROUNDUNPAINTED WOOD

Many homeowners who have unpainted furniture, decking, fences or camp structures are finding small piles of sawdust these days, a sign that carpenter bees may be at work. These bees drill a neat three-quarter-inch hole in the bottom of the larger pieces of wood, a hole that will go in about 1 ½ inches, then turn at a right angle for 8 to 10 or more inches. This is how the carpenter bee makes its nest.Once the home is completed, the female begins collecting pollen which she rollsinto a ball, then lays an egg in it. She then seals off the 1-ich cell and repeats the process until the tunnel is full.Larvae that hatch form the eggs feed on the pollen to maturity, pupate, then emerge as adults. The last egg laid is the first to mature and emerge as an adult. Then the process begins again. Many people confuse the carpenter bee and the bumble bee. The carpenter bee has a black abdomen and a black and yellow thorax. The bumble bee has black and yellow on both parts of its body. The carpenter bee is not as aggressive as the bumble bee, and the only time you will get stung is if you grab or catch one in your hand. Bumble bees are much more aggressive and string viciously if disturbed. Carpenter bees will dive at you, but seldom sting. To control a population of carpenter bees, apply Sevin to the affected area. The holes in the wood should be filled, then the area treated with the insecticide that is brushed or sprayed. If a spray is used, mix 2 to 3 ounces of the material per gallon water. If the holes are reopened, treat the area again.

NURSE NEW PLANTINGS THROUGH FIRST SUMMERHome gardeners who have made major plantings in the landscape, such as trees and shrubs, should be mindful that the first summer of growth is often the most critical to survival for such greenery. Plants which make it through the first six months from spring to the cooler months of fall will usually survive in fine fashion, but extra care must be provided during this critical period.Newly-planted trees and shrubs, as well as some ground covers, do not have root systems developed sufficiently during the first few months after transplanting to vigorously support the upper portion of the plant. One critical moisture stress in the spring or summer could lead to an early demise for such a plant.Begin the spring with a good mulch around all new plantings. Spreads six to eight inch cover of pine straw, leaves, bagasse or other organic matter under a new plant. A good mulch reduces soil temperature, prevents sudden changes in soil temperature, and most important, it will conserve moisture in the soil. A mulch will also reduce competition for soil nutrients from weeds. Since Louisiana often experiences some high winds, large trees should be staked in some fashion to keep them upright and to prevent much movement. More trees are lost by winds loosening the trunk of a tree from its roots than by any other manner.Very little fertilizer is needed for a new plant during its first year. If a gardener has provided a good planting bed with good top soil, organic matter and sand, plants should be able to make it for several months on their own. However, a light application of fertilizer in mid-summer should prove beneficial. For further information contact Alan Vaughn, County Agent, Plaquemines/St. Bernard Parish 504-433-3664 or 504-278-4234. MOVING OUT OF HARM’S WAY by Tony Onellion

The most memorable movie scene from my childhood is the one from “The Wizard of Oz”, when a tornado is approaching Dorothy’s home in Kansas. Even with the advanced filmmaking technologies since that movie, filmed more than 75 years ago, no tornado scene has ever had the visceral impact of that one. Strong fans, great audio wind effects, classic contrasts in black and white…it terrorizes until Dorothy is knocked out by a flying window while in her bedroom and begins the dream sequence which leads to the major portion of the film. It is, to me, the greatest scene in the movie, which creates a visual explosion with the sudden appearance of color once Dorothy opens the door to walk into Oz, but not the entire personal effect or impact created in the previous storm scene. It is timeless and unparalleled in the craft of filmmaking.

So, then, did I look forward to my move to Edmond, Oklahoma in June of 1979. Our company had purchased a radio station there, with its tower located just south in the city limits of Oklahoma City, thus making it de facto an Oklahoma City FM radio station, incredibly underpriced because of that situation. The station did okay for a while but circumstances led me to sign on with another local broadcast company later that year, a decision which eventually led to my moving to the Northshore in the early 1980’s.

What I looked forward to as much as the promotion to General Sales Manager and general manager-in-waiting was the market. I had been wanting to be a part of the fraternity of storm chasers who began their existence in Norman, the university city just 15 miles south of Edmond on the other side of Oklahoma City. While in Shreveport before my move to Oklahoma, I had a chance to interview Dr. Fujita, the University of Chicago doctor whose study of tornadoes had earned him the honor of having their intensity named after him. The F-scale, or Fujita scale, rates tornadoes generally from an F-1 to an F-5, with an F-5 being catastrophic. His stories about the properties of tornadoes were fascinating and his only regret is that he had never seen an actual tornado. All his research was done from studies of created tornadoes in his laboratories.

The storm chasers of that era were ill-prepared to follow the meanderings of the typical super cell that produces most tornadoes. The University of Oklahoma had just begun its first organized chase program in 1978 and there were few viable chasers. The most visible weather person in the Oklahoma City area was, and is today, Gary England, the Channel 9 meteorologist who used the first Doppler radar to predict tornadoes on the air and with his folksy approach, warned residents in his viewing area “to move their flower pots from the south side of their houses to the north side” as a possible F-1 twister made its way towards El Reno, Okarche or Midwest City. You might remember Gary from the movie “Twister”, when Gary played himself during all the televised portions of that exciting tornado movie.

With my work schedule, I found little time to formally storm chase. Back then, it wasn’t the well-organized, well-publicized, day-after-day activity that it became in the 1990’s. Mostof my efforts were like Bill Paxton’s character in 1996’s “Twister”… I looked at the sky, sniffed the air, and tried to figure out where a bad storm might come down. In my nearly three years in Oklahoma, I never saw a tornado. One tried to form just north of my home in Edmond but sloughed off any real efforts to gain sufficient rotation. The skies many times took on the green and/or yellow of an impending twister, but no luck. Luck. I was lucky. Look at this same area of central Oklahoma this week. Hail, torrential rains, flooding, drownings…and no way to see an approaching funnel cloud. Since the turn of the century, the Oklahoma City/Norman/Moore areas have been tormented with at least four F-5 tornadoes with deaths in the hundreds and property damage in the billions of dollars. Our home in Edmond had a “fraidy hole”, a place where the faint of heart could go when the winds picked up and they became afraid. Ours was a reinforced master bedroom closet with a concrete ceiling, concrete walls and a solid wood exterior door. Today, about 40% of the homes in Moore have their own “fraidy holes” - reinforced below ground cellars or similar shelters in garages or nearby outbuildings. There’s nothing wrong with being a “fraidy cat” when a monstrous black funnel cloud with straight and circular winds exceeding 150 miles per hour and the ability to suck all oxygen out of the immediate area, suffocating and collapsing everything in its path, approaches you. The storms from the past 15 years have been, as a group, the most severe and debilitating acts of nature in this confined geographical area of central Oklahoma that this country has ever seen. No hurricane creates the instant terror of a twister and a hurricane gives you time to leave.

Be careful what you wish for. I wished mightily for a chance to chase a tornado back in my salad days. It might have chased me into eternity if I had succeeded. Today, I still would like to see a tornado, but from the west or northwest, miles away, one that has passed without doing any harm except to fascinate. We have a small risk of tornadoes here in southeast Louisiana. Let’s thank our lucky stars.

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good! I ran 2 days for Fish On Guide Service. We had 3 boats and talked over what we were going to do. One boat wanted to go for Bull reds and 2 of us were going for a regular redfish trip. The wind conditions were up to 25 knots and besides being rough as heck everything was stirred up. Last minute My customers changed their minds and insist on going for BIG bull reds. I changed my plans and ran with Captain Shawn. We ran to the only place that was some what protected. It was a bouncy ride but a lot less than I had expected in those wind conditions. As soon as we get there we find pelicans diving on bait. I only have 1 rod set up for this fishing so I get one started and another guy throwing one that is close to what we need that can get bull reds also Captain Shawn hooks up at once and gets a second one right after. I now have all three guys in the action and 2 of them are not casting as aggressively or working the baits much so I work with them to get them to “Cast past the shadow of the boat” and work the bait. Right after the second fish was caught the birds scattered and we hunted the rest of the day with nothing but sail cats to show for our efforts. I switched to looking for slot reds but every place I went on that side had no water moving and dirty water. We ran to another area 20 miles away and found another boat searching for bulls. I threw a cast net and got shrimp and a small croaker so the bait was there but no fish feeding in the chocolate water. Only found one rat red, a lot of sail catfish, and hard heads. I was bummed and insisted they were not doing that tomorrow. I was doing what I wanted.

Day 2 same conditions. I had 2 new guys and 1 from the day before. We were looking for a limit of redfish and what ever else comes our way. First stop nothing. Second place same for a while. One of the guys had one come up and strike at his cork. I have him work his bait more and it gets the fish’s attention. This baby is not a slot size fish. I had to lift the trolling motor to clear the front of the boat of things this hog could use for his advantage. Another epic battle between man and beast eventually comes to an end. We are now 100% better than yesterday. This guy went 31 1/2 inches. Did not weigh it.

Although things were good in that place nothing much else was going on so I went to another place nearby. We found some rats and suddenly a cast close to the rozos gets the water boiling. These fish go in and out of the canes looking for food. We only get the ones that come out on the edges. This guy got his food and ran back deep into the canes. I had the customer keep steady pressure on the fish but not enough to break it off. In doing this we have control of the front of the fish and hopefully it will go to the place of least resistance. It went about 15 feet in so chances were in the fishes favor at that point. This method worked and we soon found this fish working back out into open water. We caught and released 1 other rat redfish while this scene unfolded. Our efforts were rewarded with a very nice redfish. This guy made the slot and also the highlight of the day!

Life is Good!Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOMOur Freedom Charters • 504-247-845

With the tide at almost high and water not moving much our bite was slow. It was going to be another 2 hours before it would start falling so we just picked away at a slow bite. One of my 3 guys was watching the other 2 catch and he was not having much luck. I tried to get him to work the bait a bit more and he did not seem to quite get into the program, As I was getting ready to troll down a bit he still had his bait in the water. The movement of the bait with the trolling motor got the fishes attention and he hooks up to his first redfish ever. It made the cut and was a keeper.

At this time we have 4 in the box. It has already been a few hours of slow fishing. The other part of our group that did what we were doing only had 1 red and 1 flounder. He came around to our cove and joined us. This move was a godsend because my boat needed a beer refill. Seems the guy in charge of the liquid supplies for the boats had figured my boat had enough. Wrong with my crew. A chilled 12 pack made my crew a bit more at ease. Just before noon I had 7 redfish in the box and 2 sheepshead. I told the other boat I was rolling across the bay to another place all together. He was thinking the same. We were hesitant due to the direction of the wind. I could get there and find conditions not right and the ride back would not be nice. I gave it a shot anyway. That move was to pay off for me.I went to one place and had a hard time setting the boat right. We were now putting fish in the box while I moved with the trolling motor about 4 times before I was satisfied. There were a lot of shorts, some slot sized keepers, and also some picture worthy beauties.

Even my guy having trouble all day found a very good one at this spot.

The other boat was still struggling so I called him in. He had no power pole so I had him bow into the point where we were casting.

This messed up our casting a bit but it gave them a chance to find some fish. At this point I had 3 shy of my limit. We could not cast where we had previously and we watched them land a few very nice redfish. We patiently picked away and limited out anyway. Just glad these guys finally got on some fish.

Back at the barn we put the fish together for a picture of the meat haul.

They even insisted I get in a picture with my guys and some of our fish.

Hi, I’m Scratchabelly.I am a 3 year old girl looking for that special someone who will scratch my belly and spend time loving on me. And don’t worry, I have plenty of love to give too. I have been at PAWS since May 2012. I am ready for my forever home. I would love to sit in your window and watch the world go by. Sitting on your lap for naptime would be awesome! If you have toys I can chase, I’m ready to play. I am up-to-date on shots, spayed and micro-chipped. Come by PAWS Tuesday-Saturday (11:00-5:00) to see me. Can you give me a forever home?

Hi! My name is Pladius. I am a good looking guy with a sleek figure. I adore climbing and chasing things. Having my ears and back rubbed is another favorite past time of mine. I am playful and friendly. I have been at PAWS for over a year and am looking for my own home. Do you have a cat tree I could climb? Maybe some toys I can chase? You must have a lap that I can curl up on. If so, come by PAWS and see me. I have lots of love to give. I am up-to-date on shots, neutered and micro-chipped. Can you give me a forever home?

Meet Blondie! She is a 1 year old Yellow Lab Mix. Blondie is still learning how to play with other dogs and she doesn’t mind cats. Unfortunately, Blondie tested positive for heart-worms, so she is only available to be fostered until her treatment is over. She has been spayed, micro-chipped, and up to date on her shots. For more information please call 504-392-1601.

Meet Jax! He is a 2 year old Shepherd mix. Jax is still learning how to play politely with other dogs and he would be best in a home with NO cats. He enjoys playing fetch and going on walks. Jax tested positive for heart-worms so he is available to be fostered or fostered to adopt until he finishes his treatment. He is neutered, micro-chipped, and up to date on his shots. To meet Jax stop by PAWS today at 455 F. Edward Hebert blvd, Belle Chasse, LA 70037 or call 504-392-1601 for more information.

Hi, I’m Jake! I am a 2 year old Black Mouth Curr mix. I enjoy playing with my other furry friends here at PAWS. I tested positive for heart-worms so I will not be available for adoption until after my treatment. However, you can foster me until the treatment is over. I am neutered and micro-chipped. Come meet me TODAY at 455 F. Edward Hebert, Belle Chasse, LA, 70037, OR call 504-392-1601 for more information about me.

Mrs. Therese Roques, Director of Special Populations, welcomed students to school on Earth Day! Belle Chasse Academy 7th grade student Sydni Fleming stopped for a quick picture with “the sun and earth”.

The Belle Chasse Academy Annual Etiquette Luncheon was held at the Westbank Holiday Inn. The event celebrated the accomplishments of students enrolled in the Belle Chasse Academy Boys Leadership Class and the Leading Ladies. Angela Young, the guest speaker for the event, challenged the participants to believe in themselves and to take action toward their leadership goals. Finally, the students received awards and practiced proper dining etiquette as they enjoyed a view of New Orleans from fourteen floors up.

Welcome To Dogs On DeploymentYou help can our serving military! Visit: http://dogsondeployment.org

Military members nation-wide confront a multitude of problems during their careers, the last thing they need to worry about is their pet’s care during their service commitments. Dogs On Deployment is a 501(c)(3) national non-profit which provides an online network for service members to search for volunteers who are willing to board their pets during their owner’s service commitments. Dogs on Deployment promotes responsible, life-long pet ownership by military pet owners by advocating for military pet owner rights, providing educational resources and granting financial assistance for military pet owners during times of emergency. Join Dogs on Deployment’s mission in changing the lives of our military members and their pets.Dogs on Deployment aids pets of all types that belong to active duty, reservists, guard, honorably discharged veterans and their families. Our Goals• DoD aims at having DoD Boarders located near all major military bases in the United States. A military member should be able to find a DoD Boarder located within 50 miles, no matter what base they are stationed at or deploying from.• DoD will become a first resource for military members to turn to when they need long term boarding for their pets. This includes, but is not limited to, being recommended by military assistance organizations, base family support centers and animal shelters impacted by relinquished pets.• DoD plans to increase the rights and education that pet owners have while serving active duty in the military. This includes bringing light to the problem of pet relinquishment by military members to higher levels of the chain of command, and petitioning for annual, military-wide pet responsibility training. We want pets to be considered part of the family by military regulations, not disposable objects.• DoD will help promote the military-pet community by providing a database of partnered pet related businesses which support their troops through discount and incentive programs. Users will be able to search for local businesses which will provide them with affordable options for pet care.• DoD wants to help qualified military members with the cost of pet care during emergencies, and/or before and during deployments in order to promote responsible pet-ownership, providing financial assistance to get military pets spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and help with cost of pet care. This is known as our Pet Chit Program.

Hope all you Mom’s had a wonderful Mother’s Day with family and friends. I had a very nice day with my husband, daughter, and two of my grandchildren. We ended the day by going to one of our favorite restaurants for a fabulous meal. We visited my Mother-In-Law earlier in the day and had a nice time with her. I enjoy my visits with her. Looking forward to seeing her next weekend. She said she needs a hair cut so I will bring my little scissors and cap and make sure she gets the hair cut she wants.

As you can tell by the picture, I made a bouquet of flowers for my Mom and sister. I love making bouquets for them. In this bouquet I used 11 stems Freedom Roses, 10 stems of Alstromeria, 15 Carnations, and 10 stems Monte Casino. Of course I used Regular Jade for the greens. I used a 6 1/2 Mache Ultimate container and 1 wet floral foam brick. When I am traveling with flowers I like to wire my carnations and roses. Sometimes the heads accidently hit something and pop off. Wiring them in advance gives them more support and helps with the bumps the have to endure while being transported to there final destination. Honestly, making your own flower arrangements are not as difficult as you may think. All it takes is the love of flowers, a little creativity, and some patience and you can make an arrangement to be proud of.

So what will your next project? Mine…I don’t know, but I know it will be fun.
