Words to GROW by!Many native or wild plants are adaptable to and desirable for the home landscape. Native plants tend to be hardened to local weather conditions, adapted to the soil type and perhaps a bit more tolerant of local garden insects and diseases. While the natives are easy to grow, the task of successfully transplanting a desired native specimen from the wild is often difficult and must be done with consideration and care. The wet and cold days of winter are ideal times for moving native plants, but although they are hardy, it is often difficult for the homeowner to substitute the natural or native woodland environment that nature has provided.A gardener must first determine whether he or she can duplicate growing conditions that have gotten the plant to the transplanting stage. If the answer is “no”, then it is best to leave the plant in its natural environment. The homeowner also must decide before digging which native plants will fit a particular landscape best. It is foolish to select a native dogwood for a sunny location when the dogwood needs shade or overhead protection, such as a canopy of surrounding trees. In choosing the native plant to transplant, care should be taken against attempting to transplant an overly large specimen. Small plants usually are more vigorous, grow much faster and are easier to handle. Tag the plant in the wild while it has leaves and/or berries to be sure of a positive identification. If you do select a large native specimen, prune the root system before digging. Prune the plant’s lateral roots one growing season prior to transplanting by making spade cuts around the plant in winter while allowing the soil to remain in place. When transplanting, try to lift the plant by raising the ball of earth instead of yanking it out of the ground by tugging on the trunk.Plant a native specimen immediately after digging, placing it in the ground or planter at its normal growing depth. Water well after planting and mulch over the root area with leaves, straw or leaf mold.In pruning upper branches, end shoots of limbs should be cut back to compensate for loss of roots and to encourage new branching and foliage in the spring. Some of the foliage should be stripped or removed from evergreen plants.Among the more desirable and abundant native plants that may be transplanted now are dogwood, redbud, river birch, sassafras, cherry laurel, red cider, American holly, yaupon, native hawthorns, French mulberry, native oads, elms and maples.Regardless of your choice, be sure to transplant with care to ensure that the plant survives being moved and has the vigor to live out its normal lifespan. If you can’t be reasonably certain it will survive, leave it in its original environment. With azaleas in full bloom over most of the area, lace bugs may not be far behind.A small insect, the lace bug attacks azalea foliage, causing it to become stippled and gray.

TRANSPLANTING NATIVE PLANTS REQUIRES SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

LACE BUGS/AZALEA GALL MAY ATTACK AZALEAS

The damage, however, does not become visible right away. The unsightly appearance it gives the plant is caused by the feeding of the insect on the foliage. Like aphids, lace bugs attack with a piercing-sucking mouthpart.Lace bugs are emerging from eggs laid last fall and deposited inside the leaf. Young lace bugs are black and have spines on the back. As they feed, they excrete a black fluid that may be observed on the underside of the foliage.Initial damage may appear as very small spots on the foliage near the mid-rib, then spread rapidly over the leaf’s surface, giving it a gray cast. This injured area will not re-green because the cells of the leaf have been killed. As the season’s blooming ends, check the plants for lace bugs. The adults will be dark on the bottom and the wings will have a silvery-white color and be very lacy in appearance. Hence, the name lace bug. There are two generations of the pest a year—after the spring bloom and in late August or early September. While it appears to occur throughout the season, plant damage is mainly related to attacks by early populations on the foliage.Control of lace bugs works best at times of hatch, after bloom and in early fall. To check the plants, inspect the underside of the foliage for signs of injury or live insects. No applications should be made if the insects are not found.Controls for lace bugs include Orthene OTTO, Ficam W, Mavrik 2E, Malathion or Lindane. Applications should be directed at the underside of the plants for best control. Most injury starts on the bottom of the plants and flares upward.Azalea gall, disease of the leaf, stem and bloom, is caused by the fungus Exobasidium vaccinii.A similar type of galling is produced on species of camellia. It is suspected that the problem in both plants is caused by the same organism.Seriousness of the disease varies from slight to severe, depending on environmental conditions and the attention it gets from the home gardener. In the average home azalea planting, it may be more alarming cosmetically by its disfiguring, unsightly appearance than in the damage it actually inflicts on the general health of the plant. On azaleas, the disease causes the leaves and flower parts to become thickened, curled, fleshy and pale green to white or pink. With age, the galls become hard and brown. The infection of the host often causes a swelling of infected parts, caused mainly by an abnormal increase in the size of the host cells rather than from an increase in their amount. In the home garden, where usually there are few azalea plants, the disease easily can be controlled by hand picking and destroying the galls as soon as they are spotted. If the galls are not picked from the plants, but are allowed to dry and fall to the ground, they will serve as a source of infection next spring.Because infection occurs only once a year, spraying with zineb or a fixed copper preparation prior to infection will help control the disease.

The disadvantage of roundabouts is the same thing. In a part of the state where anything over a 1% grade is considered Mount Everest, necessitating a major slowdown in vehicle speed to conquer, so too is a circle of concrete and yield signs, creating angst for too many drivers in this area.

A ROUNDABOUT WAY OF GETTING THERE by Tony Onellion

Louisiana drivers are learning to deal with a new way of motoring through intersections these days. Many communities are installing roundabouts, or traffic circles, as they are sometimes known. Previous roundabouts before 2007 had only existed in Alexandria, where a major one has been directing traffic for more than 50 years. It takes all the north and southbound traffic and spins it through the center of town, causing few problems and fewer accidents.

The advantage of roundabouts is that there are no traffic lights….no yellows to run, no acceleration to beat a light or make a light. Hence, fewer accidents and virtually no high speed incidents, because even the most callow and dumb Louisiana drivers have to slow down for an intersection that has no finite decisions based on a traffic light computer.

Slidell roundabout at Brownswitch & Robert Road.

The naturally aggressive nature (except on rises or hills) of the New Orleans area driver means that many times the yield sign is ignored and the driver barrels through the sign into the circle behind another driver. This can create a vicious cycle of frenzied vehicle feeding and the poor timid, intelligent driver is stuck at their yield sign as the crazies continue to basically run a stop sign. The rule is relatively simple.

Recently completed roundabout in Lacombe.

It may be a little complicated, but so is filling out an accident report and renting a replacement car while yours is in the shop. Part of the problem is that no local law enforcement branch wants to enforce roundabout driving etiquette and so the thoughtless, brain-dead and downright rude drivers get away with murder. If they tried their tactics at a four-way stop sign intersection, they’d be walking by now. People…learn to drive these things! Yes, they are a pain, but the accident rate is a mere fraction of what is was before they were installed. Yes, the Abita Springs and Slidell area Brownswitch circles are too small, but a little common sense and courtesy would take care of those situations.

However, the roundabout recently completed in Lacombe is big enough to be considered a traffic circle and only has two feeds into it. Perhaps the state could require all intersections be at least the size of the Lacombe location, as it gives all drivers plenty of visibility and room to maneuver. Brownswitch’s roundabout is coming off a hill and is on a slight incline. It’s also not very well illuminated. Requests to Parish President Pat Brister to improve the enforcement of traffic infractions at this location have fallen on deaf ears. Place a deputy at the location for a couple of days and write about 50 tickets and the word will get out fast. Roundabouts will be coming to a neighborhood near you soon. They will tie up your intersection for anywhere from two to five months during construction. But if you take them with a grain of salt, your blood pressure and perhaps your insurance rates, may both drop.

-0-

Abita Springs roundabout.

Slow down, observe traffic from both sides, and enter the circle behind the vehicle to your right if that vehicle is at the circle before you. If there is no vehicle to your right that will reach the circle before you,

then look to your left and yield to any vehicle in the circle or a driver to your immediate left at their yield sign at the same time or before you reach your sign.

Our communities and sometimes our schools do a less than credible job of teaching the finer points of entering a roundabout during driver’s training.

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM -Life is Good!

I had a booking that got messed up so I decided to take the bay boat and go to Venice marina to see if anybody was looking for a trip. If not I was going scouting. Lou (Rock) was working on his boat but could not get the parts on the weekend. After a breakfast at Venice marina we decided to go out scouting together. Another guide wanted to do some tagging so he jumped on also.

Our morning went uneventful. There was not much water movement. We went through some thin cuts and into some back ponds. As I was trolling through one of these cuts I noticed a good sized tail just beyond the entrance to the pond. I put the power pole down in the cut and we worked the entrance of the pond without going into it. This paid off because I soon had our first fish of the day. After working up and tagging the fish we took a picture and released it.

This was not the size fish we were expecting. Although the water got stirred up a bit the mullet were still moving in that area and it was not long before Rock hooks up.

The fish ran back into the pond and around the corner to the right. I was getting ready to chase it but Rock was able to keep enough pressure on the fish for it to turn and come back in front of the entrance so he could fight it to the boat. This one also has the beautiful colors of the one I landed.

The water was getting stirred up by this action but the mullet were still moving in the area so we played it a bit more. As I was contemplating another move I hook up to another hog. This fish is bland colored compared to the first 2 fish.

LLOYD LANDRY - 504-912-8291. Spring has arrived and the fish know it. Both sides of the river are giving up good catches of trout and reds. On the west side, head out of Buras and make your way towards Lake Washington. Trout have been eating black and chartreuse plastics under a cork best. Fish around all points and islands. The fish aren’t piled up yet, but after moving around to a few spots, you should have a nice box of fish. Reds have been biting Gulp! under a cork best on the west and east sides. Even with the river starting to climb around flood stage, the water on the east side of the river has been very low first thing in the morning. Have patience, and if you allow the tide to come up, you will be rewarded with a great catch. Reds have been thick around Quarantine, Bay Allen and around California Point. Trout can be found around Kelly’s Gap, Iron Banks and Stone Island. Black and chartreuse, Gulp! and market shrimp under a cork with give you the best results. Watch your tide charts and fish the end of the incoming tide to give you the best chance to fill your box. Bait has been moving into the interior waters from the Gulf, inundating the marshes and bays, attracting the reds and trout. The action follows the full moon that we had in March. Be safe and tight lines. LLOYD LANDRY. OUTCAST FISHING CHARTERS. 504-912-8291.

BESHEL’S BOAT LAUNCH - BESHEL’S. While Robert continues to recuperate, Ryan is helping out with the reports. River water still plagues some of the area but fishermen are catching mostly reds around Pointe Fienne Bay and Oak River. Trout will be coming soon, as will the brown shrimp season. BESHEL’S. The East Bank place to launch and load up. Always call first about conditions. 504-333-4469.

MGM MARINA 504 656-2267 - Leona says the trout are coming in okay but not too heavy. Good catches are being reported out of Bay Round and Bayou Dupont. No pictures this time but several fishermen caught near or at their limit of trout. Reds are still plentiful. MGM 504-656-2267.

VENICE SPORTSMAN’S LODGE AT THE MARINA - Captain Dan and his client crew of guys from Odessa, Texas wanted some heavy redfish action the other day. So Dan took Mike Withrow and his party of Texans down the river a bit to a little spot sheltered from the wind and morning action netted 12 large bulls by 11 o’clock, along with some drum and sheepshead. Following a lunch break, Dan took the guys to a little hot spot not far away and the group landed another 47 slot reds. By early afternoon, the Texas contingent was ready for some cocktails at the Venice Marina and bragging rights on a big 112 pound box of keepers. DAN SKERMETTA. CAPTAIN DAN SKERMETTA. 504-481-2320.

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM -Life is Good!Continued from page 6

After this guy the mullet left and the muddy water was thick so we moved on. Way back in this pond Rock hooks up to a monster gar fish 4 feet or better. The fight lasted for a while but the gar won.

We left this area and went a few miles away to some other back ponds. We bounced around there and landed our biggest of the day.

I think by the time we finished the day we tagged 7 of these guys.

We decided to bring in some puppy drum for food and also added one redfish to our cooler. Overall a good ending to a day that started out with no direction.

When things don’t look right --- Go Fishing. Life is Good!

Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.

Sheriff Lonnie Greco announces that on March 24th, for the second year in a row, the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office (PPSO) was recognized for their DWI enforcement efforts at the LHSC’s 7th Annual DWI Law Enforcement Awards Ceremony in Baton Rouge. The PPSO was honored for having the most DWI arrests per agency and per officer in 2014 based on the population grouping of 10,000 – 24,999. The PPSO was one of only two Sheriff’s Offices selected statewide in the category to receive this year’s award.

In 2014, the PPSO made 100 DWI arrests. Sergeant David McLean, who was assigned to the 2nd District Patrol Division, made 31% of all of those DWI arrests. McLean was recently promoted to Lieutenant and is currently the supervisor of the PPSO’s newly established Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU). During the awards ceremony, the PPSO, represented by Commander Eric Becnel, and Lieutenant McLean were presented with the awards from Lieutenant Colonel John A. LeBlanc, LHSC Executive Director and Colonel Mike Edmonson, Louisiana State Police Superintendent. Both the PPSO and Lieutenant McLean received commemorative plaques.

The LHSC and Colonel Edmonson thanked Sheriff Greco and all members of the PPSO for their hard work and dedication to making Louisiana’s roadways safer for the traveling public. Sheriff Greco urges motorists to never drive impaired and always consider using a designated driver.

I am enjoying this beautiful weather and spending a lot of time of outdoors. It has just been to nice to stay closed up in the house. And when I was inside I made sure all the windows were open. The breeze was wonderful! Love this time of the year.

I decided for this column’s project to do a little mixed media. And something I thought would be finished quickly. I used buttons, canvas, and paint. The first thing I did was make a wash with my paint. I mixed a little water with my paint to thin it. After it dried completely I drew an egg shape on the canvas and than the fun began. I purchase 2 packs of multi colored buttons at WalMart and made sure I had plenty glue sticks. I started with the outside edge of the egg and worked inward. I alternated the colors and sizes of the buttons. After the first layer is in place you can go over it again to cover any holes that are showing. You can put as many layers as you would like. I used 3 different sizes of buttons, that seemed to work well for me. I finished up the project by painting a simple “Happy Easter” on the top.

This was more time consuming than I had first thought it would be, simply because I used smaller buttons. And it was fun to make. Just be careful with the hot glue. So here you have it another simple and easy project. This would be a fun project to make with your little one using Elmer’s glue, after you allowed your outside line of buttons to thoroughly dry so they don’t move on the canvas. Then your child can take their time and fill the inside.

Well, that’s my project for this time. So what will your next craft project be? Mine…I don’t know. But I know it will be fun.

you to discuss the many perks of letting us list your home. Meet Molly! She is a young Hound Mix. Molly enjoys going on walks and playing fetch. She is still learning how to play with other dogs and she doesn’t mind cats. Molly is great with children as well. Unfortunately, Molly tested positive for heart-worms which means that she is only available to be fostered or foster to adopt until her treatment is complete. Molly has been spayed, micro-chipped, and up to date on her shots. Come meet her today at 455 F. Edward Hebert Blvd, Belle Chasse, LA 70037, or call 504-392-1601 for more information.

Meet Audrey! She is a 1 and a half year old Retriever mix. Audrey is still learning how to play with other dogs and she isn’t sure about cats yet. She enjoys going on long walks and playing with squeaky toys. Come meet Audrey today at PAWS at 455 F. Edward Hebert Blvd, Belle Chasse, LA 70037, or call 504-392-1601 for more information.

Meet Star! She is a beautiful 4 year old Shepherd mix. Star plays well with other male dogs her size but doesn’t really like female dogs. She would also do best in a home with no cats. Star enjoys going on long walks and playing in water. She loves getting her belly rubbed and being brushed. :) Star is spayed, micro-chipped, and up to date on shots. Come meet Star at PAWS today at 455 F. Edward Hebert, Belle Chasse, LA 70037, or call 504-392-1601 for more information.

Minnie is a 10 year old girl looking for a forever companion. Minnie was surrendered to PAWS because her owner was placed in a nursing home and other family members were unable to take her. She is a sweet old girl who would love to sit beside you as you read the newspaper on a Sunday morning while drinking your coffee. She would do best with someone who is home most of the day and has no other pets. She loves getting her ears and back rubbed and in return she will give you lots of love. The shelter is not an easy place for senior cats, especially when they are used to being in a home. If you can open your home up to Minnie, you won’t be disappointed. Minnie is up-to-date on shots, spayed and micro-chipped. Come by PAWS Tuesday-Saturday (11:00-5:00) to see Minnie.

Hi! My name is Salem. I am a beautiful slender black cat. I am friendly, sweet, and lovable. I am ready for my forever home. Maybe we could snuggle together or play with a feather toy. Can you give me a forever home?

We have several cats and dogs that have been here awhile and could use some time away from the shelter. We are looking for people to foster for about a month, longer if possible. This would allow the cat or dog time out of the shelter to be socialized and hopefully find a home. We would ask that while the cat or dog is in your care that you try to get him/her adopted. If someone is interested in adopting, you would refer them to the shelter to fill out an application. We would supply you with the necessary supplies that you would need to care for the cat or dog. Please look at our website and view the cats and dogs that are available If you see a one that you would like to foster, please call the shelter or email us: [email protected]

SHINGLESWhat is Shingles?

Shingles is an illness that is caused by the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays in the body in an inactive state. For reasons that are not fully known, the virus can reactivate years later, causing shingles.Shingles is also known as zoster or herpes zoster. It is not caused by the same virus that causes genital herpes, a sexually transmitted disease. Almost one out of every three people in the United States will develop shingles. Although children can get shingles, the risk of disease increases as a person gets older. About half of all cases occur among men and women 60 years old or older. Half of persons living until age 85 years will develop shingles.People who have medical conditions that keep their immune systems from working properly, such as certain cancers, HIV and those who receive immunosuppressive drugs, such as steroids and drugs given after organ transplantation, are also at greater risk of getting shingles.

Symptoms of ShinglesShingles usually starts as a painful rash on one side of the face or body. The rash forms blisters that typically scab over in seven to ten days and then clears up within two to four weeks. Before the rash develops, there is often pain, itching, or tingling in the area where the rash will develop. This may happen anywhere from one to five days before the rash appears. Most commonly, the rash occurs in a single stripe around either the left or the right side of the body. In other cases, the rash occurs on one side of the face. In rare cases (usually among people with weakened immune systems), the rash may be more widespread and look similar to a chickenpox rash. Shingles can affect the eye and cause loss of vision. Other symptoms of shingles can include fever, headache, chills or an upset stomach.

ComplicationsThe most common complication of shingles is a condition called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). People with PHN have severe pain in the areas where they had the shingles rash, even after the rash clears up. The pain from PHN may be severe and debilitating, but it usually resolves in a few weeks or months in most patients. PHN can, however, persists for many years in some persons. As people get older, they are more likely to develop PHN, and the pain is more likely to be severe. PHN occurs rarely among people under 40 years of age but can occur in up to half of untreated people who are 60 years of age and older. Shingles may lead to serious complications involving the eye. Very rarely, shingles can also lead to pneumonia, hearing problems, blindness, brain inflammation or death.

Laboratory TestingThe diagnostic tests used to confirm shingles are the same as those to confirm chickenpox. Skin lesions are the preferred specimen, but scabs are also useful. Treatment of Shingles Several antiviral medicines - acyclovir, valacyclovir and famciclovir - are available to treat shingles. These medicines will help shorten the length and severity of the illness. But to be effective, they must be started as soon as possible after the rash appears. People who have or think they mighthave shingles should call their healthcare provider as soon as possible to discuss treatment options. Pain medicine may help relieve the pain caused by shingles. Wet compresses, calamine lotion, and colloidal oatmeal baths may help relieve some of the itching.

Is Shingles Infectious?Shingles cannot be passed from one person to another. However, the virus that causes shingles, the varicella zoster virus, can be spread from a person with active shingles to a person who has never had chickenpox. In such cases, the person exposed to the virus might develop chickenpox, but they would not develop shingles. Keep the rash covered. If the lesions are well covered the person will not transmit the infection. The virus is spread through direct contact with fluid from the rash blisters, not through sneezing, coughing or casual contact. A person with shingles can spread the virus when the rash is in the blister-phase. A person is not infectious before blisters appear. Once the rash has developed crusts, the person is no longer contagious.Shingles is less contagious than chickenpox and the risk of a person with shingles spreading the virus is low if the rash is covered. If the lesions are well covered the person will not transmit the infection.

If you have shingles:- Keep the rash covered.- Do not touch or scratch the rash.- Wash your hands often to prevent the spread of varicella zoster virus.- Until your rash has developed crusts, avoid contact with:- Pregnant women who have never had chickenpox or the varicella vaccine- Premature or low birth weight infants- Those with cancer, especially leukemia and lymphoma or undergoing chemo-therapy.- Other immunocompromised persons (such as persons receiving immunosuppressive medications, organ transplant recipients, and people with HIV infection).

What can I do to reduce my risk of having shingles? The only way to reduce the risk of developing shingles and the long-term pain that can follow shingles is to get vaccinated. A vaccine for shingles is licensed for persons aged 60 years and older. People who develop shingles typically have only one episode in their lifetime. In rare cases, however, a person can have a second or even a third episode.
