GEORGIA’S GRIDIRON FUTILITY PROBABLY WILL CONTINUE IN 2015 By Tony Onellion

I finally splurged last week and picked up my two favorite college football magazines, Lindy’s and Athlon. In a strange year for the conference, Georgia, with the best talent in the league by far, is not picked over Auburn or Alabama by either publication. The favorable prejudice towards the Western division of the SEC continues to foster decisions that might not have come when Urban Meyer was coaching the Florida Gators or Steve Spurrier still had something left in the tank at South Carolina.

Georgia’s problem is always been that it can’t finish a game or polish off a quality opponent. Georgia last won a (disputed) national title back in the early ’80s, when the league was in transition. Since then, the Bulldogs have been one of the five best schools to send players to the NFL - especially defensive players, where nearly every NFL team has at least one former Georgia player. But they never make the Finals. They’re similar to the Dale Brown basketball teams which had lots of talent but didn’t have the ooooph! to make it over the top.

Maybe the problem is Coach Mark Richt. Mark is the poster boy for Goody Two-Shoes Coaches in college football. He doesn’t swear, cheat, curse, smoke, lie or hit players. He rarely gets mad. He’s like the Ben Carson of coaches. He’s even more laid back than Les Miles but Richt has had the Tiger’s number in regular season games for years. Regular season. Post-season seems tobring out the Jimmy Buffet in the Bulldogs. No one seems afraid or in awe of the red and black. Remember 2011, when the undefeated LSU Tigers trailed the Bulldogs 10-0 at halftime in the SEC Championship game in Atlanta? It was Jordan Jefferson’s worst game of his career. But the Tigers, led by the best defense in America, won the second half, 41-0 and went on to play Alabama in the national championship game. That’s where the Tigers took on the Mark Richt personna and embarrassed themselves at home in the Superdome, 21 to 0.

Georgia had a golden opportunity to seize the SEC East in 2013 and 2014 but upstart Missouri, with less than stellar SEC caliber players, took the East title both years. For years, I considered Richt as a possible coach for LSU. But we’ve had more than our share of passivity in Baton Rouge and 2015 will be the same except for watching some of the finest defensive backs and running backs in the country. One of the publications picked the Tigers’ secondary as the nation’s best. And the Tigers are loaded with skilled and tough freshmen and sophomores back there, with only a couple of upperclassmen in the mix. At running back, all the studs are either freshmen or sophomores. There’s talent aplenty too at wide receiver, but that talent can’t get going without the confidence and reps performed by an SEC-qualified quarterback. But I digress, as Howard Cosell used to say.

As outlined in our last column, the league boasts the best collection of coaches in America, led by Nick Saban and Gus Malzain. In fact, Mark Richt is the bell cow in the East as virtually every Western team has a blockbuster coach (opinions in most quarters, anyway) while the East has a collection of “whose that?” and “he’s never been a head coach before.” More reason for Georgia to man up and take the title. This year, they host Alabama between the hedges, a visit so rare in SEC annuls that Nick Saban had to Google Athens, Georgia to see where it is. Even Google sent him to Athens, Greece a couple of times before it guided him to the pretty, hilly town southeast of Atlanta. A win against Saban at home and the Bulldogs vault into the top three national teams automatically. Learn from Nick, Mark Richt. He’s as much bluster as he is nasty but the combination works because he WANTS TO WIN! It’s hard to see where Richt really WANTS TO WIN. He is more like “I’d like to win, but winning isn’t everything.”

That balloon has flown a lot longer than most folks thought it would. This year, Richt’s team must have a legitimate shot of making the four-team national playoff lottery or the coaching platform in Athens might get very RICHTety. The league’s senior coach sees the handwriting on the chalkboard. The faithful are tired of viewing Athens as the Niceville of SEC football. Even UGA, the league’s most popular mascot (REALLY!?!) is too laid back. Athens is a great place to visit for a football game. It may be the best visiting fan venue around, with its next to campus downtown, replete with bars, restaurants, shops, parking (much of it virtually free) and shade under which to park. It’s not the easiest place to get to (see: Gainesville, Starkville, Oxford) but it’s the most fun. And your team has a better than average of winning in Athens. There’s no Gator Chomp, Tiger Roar, Hog Calling, Cow Bells or Roll Tide intimidation - just some sorry barking from a lot of red and black-clad fans. It’s fun. But it’s not intimidating. Georgia needs to get intimidating if it wants respect and a chance to win a national title, moving forward. Boo!

Outcast Fishing Charters • 504-912-8291 I had the day off and Eddie burger needed a deckhand. He and I ran together a lot years ago but now I only go with him if his regular deckhand is off and I have a day open. We left the dock before sunrise and were already on the river before the sun popped up. Massive storms were to the west and south so we skirted them and went south east.

We knew the water was dirty all over so we targeted a rig over 55 miles out. Once there we made bait. That in itself was a difficult task but we managed enough. The tuna were there but not biting. We went further out to another rig. Same thing. Our third rig even further away was a bit better. We fished it hard and only found 2 yellowfin in the still dirty water. One of which was short and had to go back. Time was ticking away and we only had a tiny tuna chilling. We heard a boat talking about a weed line. It was 15 miles away. Off we went. Once there we had a classic weed line and our first glimpse of blue water. There was nothing at the spot we hit the line so we set up a troll. It took a while to find them but when we did it was game on!

From there on we proceeded to get the boat very bloody. Nice to have a good wash down pump. Dorado are extremely bloody fish and splatter blood in every corned of the boat and all over us.With a box full of fish we headed in.

On the way in we had to dodge some of the storms. They were still massive late in the afternoon but the lightning eased up. At the dock I had the fish cleaning job. Eddie’s hand is still messed up so he could not jump in with a knife. The crab man jumped in and helped me which cut the cleaning time in half.

LLOYD LANDRY - 504-912-8291 August is known as the month of transition, and this year is no different. Trout are on the move and finding large numbers are going to be hard to find but if you keep moving around by the end of the day you’ll have a nice box of fish. On the west side decent catches of trout are being reported over by Four Bayous, Lake Washington and along the Empire Deep Water Channel. Live shrimp or white and chartreuse under a cork will work best. Redfish are plentiful along the broken marsh between Bay Adams and Bastion Bay. Spoons and spinner baits or Gulp under a cork will fill your box. On the East side of the river Quarantine Bay to Baptist Bay is a sure bet for redfish. Fish all points and cuts along the shorelines. Smaller eater reds have been close to the bank and the big bulls can be caught if you fish away from the shore. Market bait or Gulp under a cork will give you best results. The river is still very high and full of debris so be observant when running in it. Be safe and tight lines. LLOYD LANDRY. OUTCAST FISHING CHARTERS. 504-912-8291.

2015 RECREATIONAL FISHING SEASON FOR GREATER AMBERJACK AND GRAY TRIGGERFISH

Skeeter Part 2-Wonderful evening trip with my son, Billy & his girl, Liz. at MGM Marina Big catfish

caught by Gail Field

Another 75 fish with the help of a great friend, David Classen.

(on left) After much persuasion last week I was able to talk my wife Alicia, into taking a fishing trip with me. We left out of Venice Marina with just a slight West wind blowing. We went to this little spot I’ve been fishing lately to the West. And proceeded to get our limit in a very short time. Then, this big girl hit her line and took a lot of drag and made several trips around the boat before finally coming to the net. This was Alicia’s very first Bull Redfish and at 43”, it was a pretty respectable one! Maybe now she will want to go fishing a little more often!

(on right) Fishing with some friends of mine from New York and hooked this monster Big Alligator Gar. It was WAY too big to put in the boat. You can get an idea of its size by comparing it to my foot and leg. It was over 6 feet long!

And that is fishing with Captain Dan Skermetta out of Venice Marina. • 504-481-2320.

On July 16, 2015, Congressman Garret Graves (R-South Louisiana) introduced new legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that would allow state-based management of the Gulf of Mexico red snapper fishery. The legislation would remove red snapper from federal authority and place responsibility for this highly valuable species in the hands of the Gulf states through a new, independent body called the Gulf States Red Snapper Management Authority (GSRSMA).

The directors of the state fish and wildlife agencies from Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas collaborated on the GSRSMA framework earlier this year in response to years of failing federal management of the Gulf red snapper fishery. The GSRSMA framework addresses many of the challenges of current federal management of this fishery including inadequate data and a lack of flexible, responsive management. The framework calls for more precise and timely recreational data collection, more frequent stock assessments, and increased collaboration among the states, among other improvements.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries would like to encourage Congress to support a move to state-based management and the benefits it would provide. “The Gulf states’ marine fisheries directors have mutually agreed upon and unanimously support the GSRSMA. I would like to ask Congress to consider our concerns and support this viable alternative to the current management system,” said Robert Barham, Secretary.

Under the GSRSMA framework, each Gulf state would be responsible for all monitoring and management of red snapper in their respective state and adjacent federal waters. The Gulf states already have these responsibilities for numerous major commercial and recreational fisheries and have been effectively managing them for the benefit of fish, fishermen, and coastal communities and economies for years.

“We appreciate Congressman Graves and his co-sponsors recognition of the challenges in red snapper management and confidence in the Gulf states’ abilities to responsibly manage this important fishery,” said Randy Pausina, Assistant Secretary of Fisheries. “Louisiana and the other Gulf states can provide the precise, real-time data and flexible measures needed to sustain this valuable resource and the people that depend on it.”The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is charged with managing and protecting Louisiana’s abundant natural resources. Certainly hope the heat is not getting the better of you and you are enjoying the last days of summer vacation with your children and grandchildren. I honestly can say I am not looking forward to school opening. I am going to miss having the grandchildren around all day. But, I am looking forward to the cooler weather. As you can tell by today’s picture I am getting ready for the fall and winter season. Made a couple of Saint’s Wreaths for customers and got those shipped out. And now I am working on things for some craft shows coming up. I did not realize how many things I still had stored away in our storage unit. Planning of having a yard sale in the very near future to clear that out. But, for now, let me tell you about my little Witch family. This is actually a Susan Kelley design. I love her playful way of designing holiday characters. I am almost finished with this piece but, didn’t quite make it before I had to have this column done. Still have to paint the eyes, noses, mouths, and all sorts of finishing touches. There is actually a second piece that goes with this design. It is a circular frame with bright orange leaves around the bottom of it. As usual, this was painted with Deco Americana Acrylic paints, sealer, and varnish. I will show you the finished project at a later date. That’s it for this time. So what will your next craft project be? Mine…I don’t know, but I know it will be fun. I am going finish this project!

SLIME MOLDS ON TURFGRASSES USUALLY NOT SERIOUS PROBLEM

Slime molds cause concern to many home gardeners when they occur suddenly in warm weather after heavy rains or watering.Slime molds are primitive fungi that grow on low-lying vegetation, such as lawn grasses, bedded flowers, mulches, ground covers, bases of trees and some other areas. The fungi feed on decaying organic matter, bacteria and other fungi.During or after humid, wet weather from late spring through fall, the slime mold comes to the soil surface and creeps over vegetation in round or irregular patches that vary from several inches to several feet in diameter. The reproductive stage is the only one most gardeners ever see. The fruiting structures are usually a grayish-white, bluish-gray, black or white. They are filled with dark masses of powdery spores that easily can be rubbed off the leaf or stem.Slime molds are nonparasitic and, technically, do not cause disease. They merely use plant leaves and stems to support their reproductive structures. However, slight damage may occur when leaves are smothered or shaded for several days to a week or longer by the molds. No control is necessary. If practical, break up the unsightly spore masses by vigorously raking, brushing or hosing down with a stream of water. Mowing grass usually removes most of the spores.

DOGS MAY BE POISONED BY COMMON HOUSEHOLD ITEMS

Mushrooms that are appearing in lawns pose a toxic risk to dogs. Dogs of any age can be affected, but young animals are more curious, so they may be at greater risk. Some may need an unpleasant experience with mushrooms to learn not to eat them. The effects produced by toxins in mushrooms vary from mild signs of an upset stomach to lethal organ damage. Poisoning in cats occurs less often, probably because they are less likely to eat fungi. There are a number of types of mushroom poisons. If a pet is seen eating toadstools or vomits pieces of them, action is needed. Samples of each type in the yard and the one known to have been ingested should be collected for identification. Put the samples in a paper bag and bring them to the veterinarian with the pet. Most exposures result in mild stomach and intestinal upset because the type of mushroom eaten was not highly toxic. Signs of poisoning may be delayed for several hours after ingestion. When that happens, the illness that develops may not be related to mushroom exposure. In fact, when amanita species are involved, onset of vomiting and diarrhea are delayed, lasting for a few hours only to be followed by signs of liver and kidney failure.Treatment for mild cases of mushroom poisoning may not be necessary. Vomiting can be induced to eliminate some of the material if done within two hours. Activated charcoal and a laxative can speed elimination from the bowel. When nervous system signs are pronounced, sedation may be necessary. Pet owners should dispose of toadstools by putting them in the garbage. Removing the temptation may save a trip to the animal hospital. Some ornamental plants are potential sources of pet poisonings.Dogs, especially puppies and dogs that are home alone most of the day, often chew on plants. Pet birds may eat bits of leaves put into their cages by a child. Many ornamental plants contain one or more toxicants capable of harming these animals. The important factor that prevents this from being a frequent problem is the amount eaten—the dose consumed. Azaleas, for example, may be fatal to a 60 pound goat that eats 1 or 2 pounds of leaves. A dog suffering from boredom generally will not eat a comparable amount of a plant. An exception was the miniature poodle that wolfed down a potted miniature azalea and was sick for two days.A German shepherd was severely poisoned after eating more than 50 berries and other parts of the plant yesterday, today and tomorrow. Alkaloids in the plant produced convulsions and then coma, which persisted for days.Seeds produced by the palm-like Cycas revoluta plant caused life-threatening liver damage in a young dog years ago. A cocker spaniel chewed and swallowed the root of “mother-in-law’s tongue” which resulted in persistent diarrhea for a week.Veterinarians occasionally receive calls from dog owners concerning dieffenbachia or dumbcane. This plant contains irritants that cause an intense burning sensation of the mouth and lips.Dogs are protected by their ability to vomit readily, resulting in the elimination of some toxicants before much is absorbed. Highly toxic things like the nuts of the tung oil tree or castor bean seeds can be fatal.A pet budgie offered a bite or two of some of these plants probably will not survive. The birds also are sensitive to the avocado.

LOUISIANA ARCHERS WIN AGAIN AT NASP WORLD TOURNAMENT

On Saturday, July 25 the 2015 National Archery in the Schools (NASP) World Tournament crowned its champions and a good chunk of the hardware headed back to Louisiana. Teams and individuals from five Louisiana schools participated in the NASP World Tournament

July 22-25 in Nashville, TN. The tournament consisted of 4,871 individuals from the United States, South Africa, Namibia, United Kingdom, and Canada. Three Louisiana archers found the podium in the individual category and two schools brought home top honors.Emma Bunch, a 5th grader from Benton Elementary was crowned as the 2015 NASP World Champion in the girls, elementary school division. Bunch shot an amazing 292, just 8 points from perfection and beat out 669 other elementary schools females to take home top honors.Nathan Delill, an 8th grader from Buckeye High School, was awarded 3rd place in the middle school boys division. Delill was tied for 2nd place after the standard bulls eye competition that led to a shoot-off round in front of an anxious crowd. After the first round of the shoot-off, Delill was still tied and brought the competition to a one-arrow shot. Each archer was given one arrow to shoot from 15 meters, with the arrow closest to the center taking the prize. Both archers buried their shots dead center in the ten-ring target with the competitor’s arrow barely edging Delill’s shot. Delill hung a 294 just 6 points from perfect, and the best score ever shot by a Louisiana NASP archer in competition.

Anna Robins, a 6th grader from Benton Middle School was awarded 4th place in the middle school girls division. Anna shot a 289 and out-shot 956 other female middle school archers, many of them 7th and 8th graders.Benton Elementary returned to Louisiana as the NASP World Champion in the elementary division, for the second year in a row. Benton Middle School was also crowned the NASP World Champions for the middle school division, the first ever middle school for Louisiana.Last year, Benton was the first elementary in Louisiana to ever win a NASP World Tournament. Many of the team’s shooters from last year’s elementary team were part of this year’s middle school team.Students from Haughton Middle School and Northwood High School also attended the 2015 NASP World Tournament and represented Louisiana proudly.

All the schools that attended the NASP World Tournament are members of the Archery in Louisiana Schools (ALAS) program which teaches NASP to students as part of their in-school curriculum. All schools in the State of Louisiana are eligible to have the ALAS program. The ALAS program is facilitated and funded by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries would like to recognize all student archers from Louisiana who attended the 2015 NASP World Tournament. If interested in finding out more information about the ALAS program and how you can get it started in your school contact ALAS State Coordinator – Robert Stroede at: [email protected] or (318)484-2276
