The Spurs swept their fi rst round playoff series 4-0, against Memphis while the Warriors held a 3-1 lead going into their fi fth game of their series with the Houston Rockets. The Warriors are expected to win Wednesday night in Oakland to take the series and most likely face the Los Angeles Clippers in the second round of the playoffs. The Spurs are probably going to match up with the Oklahoma City Thunder in their second round). Another update: with the injuries this week to Steph Curry of the Warriors, Chris Paul and Blake Griffi n of the Clippers, its highly unlikely the Clippers can hold off the Portland Trail Blazers, who tied the series with the Clippers on April 25th, 2-2.

If so, the Trail Blazers would face the Warriors, who, even without Curry, should fi nish off the Rockets and await the winner of the Portland/Los Angeles series. The Warriors would be favored over the Trail Blazers under current circumstances. Last year, Clipper coach Doc Rivers was critical of the Warriors because his team didn’t play them in the playoffs. This year, payback’s a bitch with his two stars out at least through most of the rest of the playoffs, if not the entire time. The Clippers wouldn’t have made it to the fi nals anyway, but this is a bitter pill for Rivers and the Clippers to swallow.

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

I had nothing on the books and I asked my neighbor if he wanted to kill some trout. My wife wants to bring some fish to Kentucky when she goes up there. I was feeling good about getting a nice catch. Right off the bat I miss a definite trout. A few casts later and we have our first yellow mouth as they are called.

We had 35 trout, 5 redfish, 2 sheepshead, and a small flounder.

The morning went slow. I knew they were here but the tide was wrong and the water was a bit dirty. I hit the area most of the morning. About 10:30 I decide to leave the area. We have 6 trout, 2 sheepshead and a small flounder in the box.

Today my wife (made me) go back out and see if I could find some more fish. Things started out good as far as bites but I lost my first 5 fish. 2 were trout for sure and my sixth bite revealed what the other fish was. This was my second biggest sheepshead so far this year. I finally got into the hook setting mode and put a pair of trout and another big sheepshead in the box. The bite was slow but steady enough for me to fish it hard.

Looked like I made a left turn when I should have turned right. Bad call for this area. As I was leaving I noticed a patch of clean water around a small island in the distance. I had never been in this area so I eased in and started fishing. First cast nice trout. It did not take Ralph long before he said “Now this is fishing”. We were getting a bite almost instantly on every cast. All we did was fish this island. Along with some very good trout we also found some redfish. I had the pleasure of fighting and landing a nice bull red but Ralph’s picture taking ability leaves a lot to be desired. We picked through some rat reds but still put some slots in the box. Ralph had to take a break occasionally. Around noon He told me he was “fished out”.

We had a good amount of trout in the box and some redfish and sheepshead to go along with them. Our disastrous day was saved by me observing different conditions as I was running. About 8 miles from Joshua’s Marina I notice 2 guys in an older boat with the motor cover off. One guy was paddling as best he could. They had already contacted the marine division and their ETA was about an hour. I had them call back and cancel the assistance. I carry a bridle just for situations like this. I had the big guy get on my boat and was able to tow the boat in at 18 to 20 mph running 3600 rpms.

The bite was over just before 9:00. I toughed it out until just after 10:00 I decided to make a very long move. As I got closer the water was dirtier than I had been in the last 2 days. The closer I got I saw a few boats fishing and getting trout. I eased my way in using the trolling motor. I had a place picked out but somebody cut me off. I just put the power pole down where I was and proceeded to catch trout. The problem was these were smaller than I was getting as a rule so I had to measure and throw back a lot. I was soon at 24 trout but a rip moved in and ended the bite.

I had a box full so I decided to head in with 24trout, 4 redfish and 2 sheepshead. On the way in I decided to check out a place I used to fish in English bay. I went in with the big motor and shut it down. I picked up a Vu Du shrimp setup and made a cast. A bull red crashes on the cork just after it lands on the water. I made another cast and come in with a small trout. 2 casts later I have my limit of trout with my biggest of the day. Once again back in just after noon. Another successful haul

Back to back days almost the same all the way to the final board. The spring bite is on! Life is Good! Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.

The bite was slow but steady enough for me to fish it hard. I had to weed through small trout, a lot of rat reds and hardhead cats. I did find 4 trout, 2 very nice sheepshead, and 4 beautiful redfish.

It’s a rare occurrence when a professional sports team combines ethics, hard work, fair play, teamwork and entertainment with an incredible winning atmosphere. It’s unheard of when a second team, in the same sport, same league and same conference does the same in the same season. We have never seen nor may we ever see again in any sport the class and results shown by the two top NBA teams this season.

The Golden State Warriors have created history both as a team and through individual efforts by their players and their coaches. This team, one of the league’s laughingstocks less than fi ve years ago, has beaten the 72-10 regular season record of the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls, led by Michael Jordan, with this year’s record of 73-9. In doing so, they became the fi rst team in an NBA season to have single digit losses, no more than a single loss to one team and no back-to-back losses. They tied their own 39 win and two loss mark at home ( short of the 40 win and one loss mark set by the Boston Celtics in 1985 and tied by the San Antonio Spurs this season). The Warriors also beat the Chicago Bulls 1995-96 road record of 33 wins and 8 losses with a 34 and 7 record while compiling their overall record of 73-9 with 39 wins at Oracle Arena in Oakland and 34 away from Oakland. Meanwhile, San Antonio also wound up with one of the 20 best regular season records in NBA history. Two extremely tough home games to fi nish the season in San Antonio, against the Golden State Warriors and the Oklahoma City Thunder and a fi nal road game against their nemesis, Dallas, virtually guaranteed the Spurs could not pass or catch the Dubs at the end of the regular season for the league’s best record.

Compare these numbers to the best record in major league baseball. The all time best team winning percentage belongs to the 1906 Chicago Cubs, who were 116 and 36 for a winning percentage of .763, followed by the 1954 Cleveland Indians with a record of 111 and 43 or .721. The Dubs, the nickname for Golden State, have a winning percentage of .890, meaning they won just under nine games out of every ten played. A major league baseball team would have to go 144 and 18 to virtually equal that record with a lot less travel time between games and considerably less physical effort than their roundball counterparts exude during a typical 48-minute contest. It simply will never be done.

Led by the shoo-in back-to-back League MVP Stephan Curry, the Warriors are favored to repeat as NBA champions - provided they can get by the also incredibly talented San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs, led by the league’s best coach, Gregg Popovich, are nearly as awesome as the Warriors. Both teams are the leaders in offensive and defensive play in the league, both have the top coaches in the game and both have depth, a Big Three and a home atmosphere which makes defeat almost impossible. The teams have fi ve of the league’s top 15 players, including 4 of the top ten this year and at least three who will make the Hall of Fame when their careers are done. Both teams are unselfi sh, versatile and relentless.

You’d have to go back a long time to fi nd the two best NBA teams in the same conference in any given year. Usually it’s been a battle between the East and the West - the Celtics, Knicks, Bulls or Heat against the Lakers, Mavericks, Spurs or some upstart squad. This year, there’s no doubt that the Western Finals will be the real NBA championship with the East verses West a mere afterthought. For Cleveland, Toronto or anyone else’s team in the Eastern Conference is only a shadow of the Spurs or Warriors. Even a non-NBA person would fi nd this year a fascinating experience, with the entertainment and persistence values of these two fi ne organizations. No Infl ateGate here, no Yankee haters. Just two extremely professional programs giving fans more than their money’s worth. And that’s a rare fi nd in today’s society.

The Warriors’ coach, Steve Kerr, was a member of more than one NBA championship team, including the aforementioned Bulls. Kerr learned his craft well and even having missed his team’s fi rst 30% of the season with a bad back, his assistant coach, Luke Walton, had the Warriors undefeated through their fi rst 24 games, another NBA record to start a season. Kerr, who looks like Doogie Houser, runs his team with a unusual blend of discipline, spice, humor and nonchalance. Kerr and superstar Curry look like a couple of young frat guys up to no good, the ones you see in silly 60’s surfer movies, guys with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn personalities with a little bit of Bill Murray thrown in. They’re diffi cult to dislike, even if you are a Clippers fan. They’ve brought back fun and relaxation into what has become a multimillionaire’s game, playing like they’re out shooting for beers or a pizza. Gregg Popovich has a different persona but he too is a player’s coach, drawing criticism by resting his aging starters at the considerable risk of a predicted loss. Popovich is already assured his spot as one of the top three all time NBA coaches, along with Phil Jackson and Red Auerbach. Kerr could join him in the top seven within fi ve or six years. No coach has ever kept a core of productive veterans together as long on one team like Popovich has with Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili and no team, not even the Warriors, have the top ten experienced depth of the Spurs in 2016. Make sure you watch at least one game between these two teams in the playoffs. It probably will be one you can tell your grandkids about.

GARDENIAS OFFER SWEET FRAGRANCE

One of the trademark shrubs of the south, gardenias are popular choices for Louisiana gardeners. Their signature characteristic is the pure white and extremely fragrant blooms seen all through mid to late spring, lingering into the summer. Their evergreen foliage, heat tolerance and variation in size are a few other reasons on why so many gardeners choose to grow them.

Like azaleas and camellias, gardenias prefer an acidic soil with an

optimal pH range between 5 and 6. Have your soil tested

through the LSU AgCenter to determine your soil’s pH

value. Elemental sulfur can be applied to the soil if you need to lower the pH. Be sure to choose a location that drains well, receives full to part sun and near your back patio in order to

get the most out of your new plant. Follow proper

plant spacing depending on mature size of each

variety. Scales and whiteflies can be problematic pests during the growing season but can easily be controlled using horticultural oil or insecticidal soap sprays. There are several varieties of gardenia to choose from. All of which produce white, fragrant flowers. ‘Dwarf Gardenia’ is the lowest growing of all. It will get 1-2 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide. It has a spreading type growth habit. ‘Frost Proof’ gardenia has a more upright growth and tops out around 4 feet tall. It gets its name from the fact that it is more cold tolerant than other varieties but that isn’t really a factor in South Louisiana. The ‘Frost Proof’ gardenia was selected as a Louisiana Super Plant back in the spring of 2011 for its outstanding performance.

ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS

Spring time in South Louisiana is by far one of the best times of the year. Deciduous trees are leafing out with every shade of green under the sun. There is so much delight in driving down the highway and seeing Mother Nature’s touch of beauty around every bend and curve. Cherokee rose, Rosa laevigata, is currently in full bloom growing on tree lines and fences all throughout Louisiana. This aggressive climbing rose has a short blooming window but you can’t miss the display of 4 inch diameter whites blooms in April. Another commonly seen vining plant is chinese wisteria, Wysteria sinensis. Some may call it invasive but everyone stays quiet when it produces its fragrant blue-violet blooms. It will grow all over trees at the edge of a thicket and along the highway. Salvia lyrata, or sometimes referred to as lyre-leafed sage can be seen growing alongside roads, tree lines, and streambanks. The bloom spike will reach about 1 ½ to 2 ft tall and produces light purple or lavender flowers. Obedient plant, Physostegia virginiana, is another plant with a flower spike and can be found growing in moist, acidic soils along roadsides, in meadows, railroad right-aways. The name stems from the fact that when you push a flower in any direction, it will temporarily remain in that position. Vines and ground covers are not the only ones stealing the show. The green hawthorn, Crategus viridis, stands about 25 feet tall and puts on the most beautiful display of white flowers in the early spring. Upon closer inspection, the bark on older trees exfoliates to expose an orangish-brown inner bark. So the next time you are taking a Sunday drive or walking trails, keep your eyes open to see if you can pick out any of these natural beauties on your path.

Hi Everyone, So…have you been crafting or enjoying all this beautiful weather by going to the festivals that all over the area. I have been crafting away. Getting things ready for the First B.V.F.D. Oilfi eld Crawfi sh Queens Craft Show. It will be held on June 11 from 9 A.M. til 4 P.M. behind the Buras Fire House. If you are a crafter and would like to be a part of the craft show, please email [email protected]. Kelly will be more than happy to send all the information you will need in an email along with her contact info. Or you can also email me and I will be more than happy to email the information to you. If you are looking for something to do on that Sat. take a nice leisurely ride down to Buras and see all the wonderful things that will be offered. And you can get a jump start on Christmas shopping. I am looking forward to seeing you there. So be sure to come by my booth and say hello. Hope to see you there.

Now let me tell you a little something about the project I am sharing with you today. Everybody needs a clip board! I have them all over the place in the craft room, Can’t be too many of them for me. I think I have been rubbing off on Carlea’ (my granddaughter) also. She has been putting things on my clip boards. So, I decided to paint this one for her. Her school mascot is a Hornet so I thought this would work out perfectly. And what better way to begin Spring and Summer than with fl owers and a Bee. This is a Laurie Speltz design from a book she published in 2005.It was actually designed for a clock but, it fi t nicely on the clip board and I really like the design. Most of the paints in this book called for Delta Ceramcoat paints. But since I didn’t have all the Delta colors I needed I used a conversion chart and so I could use the Deco Americana and Folk Art Paints I had on hand. You really don’t have to use the colors the artist suggests, you can always choose colors you like best. I guess that is why I like tole and decorative painting so much, you can switch it up like you want to. This was a very simple and quick piece to do. I plan on painting more clip boards. They are so easy to paint on. Well, that’s my craft project for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine…I don’t know. But, I know it will be fun! Hope to see you June 11. Sincerely, Paula Johnson.
