Welcome To Dogs On DeploymentYour help can assist our serving military!

    Visit: http://dogsondeployment.org

Military members nation-wide confront a multitude of problems during their careers, the last thing they need to worry about is their pets care during their service commitments. Dogs On Deployment is a 501(c)(3) national non-profit which provides an online network for service members to search for volunteers who are willing to board their pets during their owners service commitments. Dogs on Deployment promotes responsible, life-long pet ownership by military pet owners by advocating for military pet owner rights, providing educational resources and granting financial assistance for military pet owners during times of emergency. Join Dogs on Deployments mission in changing the lives of our military members and their pets.Dogs on Deployment aids pets of all types that belong to active duty, reservists, guard, honorably discharged veterans and their families. Our Goals DoD aims at having DoD Boarders located near all major military bases in the United States. A military member should be able to find a DoD Boarder located within 50 miles, no matter what base they are stationed at or deploying from. DoD will become a first resource for military members to turn to when they need long term boarding for their pets. This includes, but is not limited to, being recommended by military assistance organizations, base family support centers and animal shelters impacted by relinquished pets. DoD plans to increase the rights and education that pet owners have while serving active duty in the military. This includes bringing light to the problem of pet relinquishment by military members to higher levels of the chain of command, and petitioning for annual, military-wide pet responsibility training. We want pets to be considered part of the family by military regulations, not disposable objects. DoD will help promote the military-pet community by providing a database of partnered pet related businesses which support their troops through discount and incentive programs. Users will be able to search for local businesses which will provide them with affordable options for pet care. DoD wants to help qualified military members with the cost of pet care during emergencies, and/or before and during deployments in order to promote responsible pet-ownership, providing financial assistance to get military pets spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and help with cost of pet care. This is known as our Pet Chit Program.

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTSCapt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!

    Capt. Hoop -- Continued

Our goal was tuna plan A, mahi plan B, and amberjack plan C.

We started our running around some nasty storms. My XM weather was a great help. It was a bit rough due the winds and we did get a small bit of the rain but I was able to avoid the worst of it. After getting away from the mouth of the river the sea eased up a bit and we hit some rigs looking for bait. Not much but I did get this beauty on the sabiki rig. The blue spots and line around the top of the fin were almost luminous.

Nothing more at that place so I continued. We found a small weed patch and the right bait was almost jumping in the boat. Now full of bait I thought of the old jinx I have, A lot of bait = no fish.

Once at the tuna rig everybody was hooked up. Everything was small. We got some skip jacks and only one small yellow. We lost several baits without any yellowfin in the box so around noon I went to plan B.

I had noticed Josh sitting about 5 miles away and figured he was on weeds and mahi. Once I got there I could see he was on a big fish. He was fighting a big marlin. I continued on searching for the weeds and maybe mahi. I followed my electronics to where I found the bait earlier. The small patch of grass had moved a bit and it did not take long to find a few mahi.

We got 3 of the 5 there and moved on looking for some more weeds. It was not long before we found an acre of weeds and mahi everywhere. Game on!

We all had a bloody hectic couple of hours on the boat. This was the high spot of the trip. Too much action to get any more pictures. From there we went to plan C. I pulled up to a rig in 380 feet of water where I had gotten amberjack and very good almaco jacks recently. Things were a lot different today. Their sun burned cousins were visiting and got to the bait before any other fish could.

They went back and I went into another area closer to home. There were a lot of heavy storms around the area I was heading so I did not desire to run back in too quickly. I hit another rig just outside of state waters in 260 feet of water but the results were still the same.

I waited just enough for the storms to give me a shot back to the marina and headed in praying that another cell would not form above us before we made the dock. I was monitoring them building and dying out all around. The one to the left was just starting to build and the others were getting together. At this moment I wished I had a faster boat. I had to get to the squares above the 017 on the chart.

We got in and hung the fish just before the rain started. Fortunately we only got the edge of the rain and it was not much.

Another long but successful day at the office.

    Life is Good!

Fishing is not a matter of life or death. Its more important than that.

Kenny, Amy and Matt came all the way from Arkansas to fish with me. Kenny was telling me how excited he was and was asking me if there were any trout to be had. My advice was to him, lets go knock out 20 redfish and well then chase trout.

I couldnt have called it anymore perfect. By 9 a.m. we were done with our 20 redfish and I brought them to one of my secret trout spots. I got on the bow to show them how to pop the cork with plastic underneeth and on the first cast, I hooked this tarpon. I kept telling them, we are not here to catch tarpon, but I believe they were still trying the whole time. Anyway we did land some very nice trout and Kenny started calling them Gator Trout because they were so big. Amy caught these 2, on a state certified scale at Venice Marina, one was 4.0 lbs and the other was 4.4 pounds, and that aint no fish story!

Hi Everyone! email me! [email protected] you had a great couple of weeks crafting and enjoying all the fair and festivals that have been going on, I did. We spent Friday night and most of Saturday at the O.L.P.H, fair. My daughter Kelly and I worked Friday night in the duck pond booth. Just love watching the little ones trying to hold their nets and seeing their little faces when they catch one of the ducks in the net. And than there was the little one who just wanted to put their hands in the water and swirl them around. Oh, and there was the cutest little girl who just wanted to chase the plastic ducks all around the little pond. Oh, and another one who cried because his Mommy decided it was time to go. They were just too cute. Saturday our granddaughter performed with her class. Loved those Ghost Busters! The children do such a great job on stage thanks to the devotion of their teachers. And seeing friends that you havent seen in a while. We got to see a very special friend that means to world to our family, Ms. Hazel Gautreaux, Thank you for being the wonderful person you are. You are truly loved by our family.

Well, I didnt get to finish the project I was working on for this column because I had to finish up orders I had taken at Shaws Craft Show. But, I promise I will have it ready for next time. So, with

that being said, crunch time was here, I had to do something fast. I really dont like when I do that to myself but, thats the price you have to pay sometimes. I had no idea what I was going to do, so I decided to go to Dollar Tree I knew while walking around there on a rainy Sunday something would come to me. I saw wine glass that I could paint and make tea light holders, I saw plastic cups I could decorate with vinyl cut outs from the Circuit. I really wasnt in the mood for all that. Than I saw the those beautiful plain quart jars and remembered something I saw on the internet. I knew they would have everything I would need to do this. I ran around the store picking up cotton balls, plastic spiders, and glow sticks to go along with the quart jar. Within 10 minutes my project was complete! All I did was put some cotton balls in the jar placed the spiders and bats where I wanted them, inserted the glow stick in the center and I was done! These would look really cute scattered around for a Halloween party. Think I will stop back at Dollar Tree after work and pick up more of these jars and the smaller ones. I

can think of so many things to do with them now that I am not crunched for time. Its just finding the time to do all the things I want to do.

Well, thats it for this time. So what will your next project be? MineI dont know. But I know it will be fun. Thank You Ms. Hazel for inspiring me again.

Early fall caterpillar is out and about.

The fall webworm caterpillar has already started causing a few problems in Louisiana landscapes this year considering its relatively small size when compared to it life-long rivalry, the backyard shade tree. Many reports are being made about cobwebs and caterpillars feeding on many different types of shade and ornamental trees. This particular caterpillar has a wide host range meaning it can feed on several different kinds of trees such as: pecan, persimmon, black cherry, flowering cherry, sourwood, sweetgum, willow, sycamore, red bud and bald cypress. I will leave control completely up to the individual on this one. I think that because of the time of year this

pest can go untreated. The larvae of the webworm will feed on the late summer foliage of our deciduous shade trees. The foliage will naturally start to fall within the next month. The only time I would recommend stepping in and applying a spray would be if the larvae cause a nuisance with humans. If that is the case there are many safe options to use. Both Bacilius thuringiensis (Bt) and spinosad are safe to use insecticides that are labeled to control caterpillar pests. Please read and follow label instructions before applying any pesticide.

    Pre-emerge now to prevent later.

Weeds in a home lawn will probably never go away any time soon. There is just too many of them to deal with. They are some of the most opportunistic organisms you will ever encounter. Weeds will always be an issue when trying to grow a big plot of the same species. However, we have a new weapon to help give us an edge on the competition. Pre-emergence herbicides are being recommended everywhere to help fight weeds in the home lawn. The way these herbicides work is they provide a layer of herbicide at ground level. When seeds germinate and grow, they eventually pass through the herbicide zone where the plant is then killed. These are powerful tools in almost any fixed landscape. The herbicide has no effect on plants already growing. Instead, it prevents the growth of annual plants returning from the previous years seed. Treat now to help get some relief from annual bluegrass in late winter. Treat in February to help with crabgrass control later in the spring. Look for Greenlight Amaze, Hi-Yield Dimension or Scotts Halts at your local garden center or retail location.

    Strawberry fields forever!

It is now time to plant strawberries for a bountiful spring harvest and maybe even a few in December. Garden centers and seed stores will be selling bare root strawberry plants. They are typically offered in bundles of 25 or more. Be sure to keep them hydrated until you decide to plant them in the ground because there is no soil with a bare root plant. They are sold in this manner because it is a lot easier to package and ship them to your area. Prepare the area to be planted by removing weeds and cultivating the soil. Apply 1 pounds of 8-24-24 fertilizer for every 25 feet of row before you plant and try to time it before a rainfall event or be prepared to irrigate by hand to water in the fertilizer. Commercial strawberry growers primarily use black plastic mulch with strawberries. The home gardener can find this product as well but may also use mulch. Pine straw is commonly used and played an important role in the naming of strawberry! Do not plant strawberries any less than 12 inches or 1 foot apart. If planted any closer the plants will overcrowd each other while competing for sun, water and nutrients. Commonly planted varieties in Louisiana include: Camarosa, Camino Real, Chandler and Festival.

Plaquemines Animal Welfare Societys annual Kennel Auction Fundraiser is set to be larger than ever before! The fundraiser will be on Thursday, October 22nd, from 6 9 P.M. at PAWS, located at 455 F. Edward Hebert Blvd. in Belle Chasse, LA. The Kennel Auction includes the silent auction for an annual sponsorship of each kennel located in the shelter. The winner of each kennel will have an engraved plaque attached to the kennel they sponsor. The plaque can be engraved with a quote, person or pets name, or in memory of a beloved pet. New this year, the event will also include a Community Leader Lock-In. Community leaders will be locked in a freestanding kennel in the lobby in 15-minute increments. Each person locked-in can be released on bail after raising a minimum $200 donation for PAWS. We are thrilled to include the lock-in this year, PAWS Executive Director Chris Beebe said. We are asking each community leader we lock-in to reach out to members of the community and raise $200 for PAWS during their designated time slot. We think this will add a fun new component to the event and significantly help the animals at PAWS by providing additional donations. The event also includes a live DJ, complimentary food and drinks, a Silent Auction, and will be emceed by WDSU news anchor Randi Rousseau. Admission is free with a donation of Non-Clumping Cat Liter. PAWS Executive Director Chris Beebe said, The Kennel Auction is a huge event for us. The money we raise through the auctions and in donations directly impacts the number of animals we can save every year. The cat liter donations also relieve a huge financial burden we have for providing cat liter to over 100 cats every day. We have a great turn out for the Kennel Auction every year, and we hope this year is the biggest and best one to date. It is a very fun evening that everyone can enjoy, so we hope the public can make plans to attend.

PAWS is a non-profit, no-kill animal rescue located in Belle Chasse, LA. For more information about the event or PAWS, check the PAWS website at www.paws4life.org, or like PAWS on Facebook at www.facebook.comi/paws2003.

Last year, I had the chance to meet two highly recruited offensive position players in Tigertown during Media Day. Brandon Harris, the rocket armed quarterback from Parkway and Leonard Fournette, he of the Buga Nation by way of Slidell and St. Aug, had the bully pulpit.

Fournette was like a junior Shaquille ONeal; already media savvy, he was both polished and funny, a man-child ready to make a move to return Allie Broussard-style running to the LSU Tigers. During our session, we noticed both Fournette and Harris were wearing braces. Both sets were blue. They looked like twins. It seems the two were rooming together. While Fournette learned his trade behind Terrance Magee, Harris had to face his first year behind a barely experienced

quarterback from Marietta, Georgia. Anthony Jennings came to LSU as a highly ranked pocket quarterback. But putting Jennings behind center was like exposing an introvert to the live stage. Jennings had a miracle throw in 2013 that had the Tiger Faithful (on Kool-Aid) believing he was the next something-or-other behind center. He wasnt and isnt.

Harris wasnt very good in 2014. He was scrawny and a little bit cocky. It doesnt take much to find The Hats doghouse and Harris found it quickly during the Auburn game last year. Meanwhile, Jennings continued to redefine average mediocrity and this spring he reinforced the Jordan Jefferson definition of idiotic mediocrity with his alleged break-in to recover stolen personal goods. Apparently they stole what was left of this kids common sense because the resulting suspension cost Jennings his starting job and if the truth be known, his remaining career in Baton Rouge, barring a serious injury to Harris.

Back to the braces. Brace yourself. The Blue Braces Brothers. Like the Blues Brothers, the Blue Braces Brothers want to put on a show to save the religious experience of attending football games in Tiger Stadium. Like the Blues Brothers, the Blue Braces Brothers will cause havoc wherever they go because of who they are. And like the Blues Brothers, it will take an army of well-prepared defenders to finally halt this wacky pair.

Think of it. During the next five weeks, LSU will face football teams the equivalent of Sheriff Buford T. Justice and his idiotic son. Except for Floridas defensive secondary, the Tiger Twosome should be able to put up very good to incredible numbers as Leonard runs behind perhaps the best pair of young offensive guards LSU has ever had on one team and Harris is allowed to throw 20-30 passes a game and exceed 200 or even 300 yards a few times against a rather weak quartet of conference and non-conference foes before facing Alabama at Bryant-Denny Stadium. This could be 2011 all over again but without the sword of quarterback Jordan Jefferson hanging over the team. This years schedule isnt nearly as daunting as 2011. The players arent as experienced and as overall impactful at this stage but I believe they are as talented or more so than the six All-Americans that came off that Tiger squad. It wont show itself fully until November but watch the development of the wide receivers and backup defensive linemen as well as the curing of the ridiculously, richly stocked secondary. If a surprise linebacker comes out of the shadows and true freshman defensive end Arden Key develops quickly, this could be a special team. Again, quarterback is fragile and there is no real backup behind Harris with the now confused Jennings on the bench. Keep Harris healthy and it could be like 2003 with better offensive weapons. Get by a weakened Alabama and a thin Ole Miss and the Tigers should see a berth in the four team national playoff. After all, it is 2015 and the Tigers do this every four years. This year, if someone will keep The Hat under their thumb, maybe the Tigers can win the championship they so richly deserved four years ago.

Update to this story: If the Tigers special teams and lack of discipline dont change quickly, they may not find themselves in any type of national playoff. Their performance against Syracuse in New York last week was pathetic in both areas, with 14 penalties for more than 110 yards, costing the Tigers a much easier victory and Leonard Fournette the chance to be the first LSU running back to break 300 yards in a game. His 89-yard scamper in the second half was negated by one of at least nine really stupid penalties by players who should know better. Ricky Jefferson might have played himself out of a starting role in the secondary with two costly holds ( a position he will in all likelihood lose when Jalen Mills returns to action in October). The offensive line looked worse on penalties than they did two weeks ago against Mississippi State with veteran center Ethan Pocic committing two of the holds. The only good penalty came with defensive end Lewis Neal was penalized 15 yards for playing on after losing his helmet. What a terrible penalty for a player who could only hurt himself!

I suppose if the refs found out a player had a concussion or pulled a muscle, they could also be penalized. I wonder that if a player should die on the field, would the refs charge a timeout against his team and impose a 15-yard (or greater) penalty? Meanwhile, the secondary on Saturday looked more like DisaBled U than DBU with bad plays from Jefferson and at least two other startersagainst a FIFTH STRING quarterback! And the defensive line would not have been confused with Alabamas on Saturday. Despite those gaffes, the Tigers won by ten points and Les Miles was able to offer his usual scintillating, analytic synopsis of the game afterwards. I wonder if Tiger Radio Network announcer Gordy Rush washes Miles vehicles and cuts his lawn for free as well.
