PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTSCapt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!

Capt. Hoop -- Continued

October is a very busy month for fishing. I have not been able to post anything for a long time. I had a customer that fishes with me a lot. Vee (how it is pronounced) wanted to get some yellowfin and maybe blacks. We found some shrimp boats in close and got some bait from them. I headed out looking for shrimp boats in deeper water but due to the weather there were none out there. I wasted most of the morning looking for them or blackfin tuna on the deep water rigs. It was quite uncomfortable to remain any longer so we went in looking for other fish. We managed some mangrove snapper, almaco jacks, and a few kings for the day. Tough day with not much to talk about.

The next day they wanted to stay in close and target kings and blue runners (hard tails). With 5 Vietnamese men on board what ever way they want and me not understanding anything they were saying it was going to be another interesting day. Little did my deckhand and I know how interesting it was going to be.

I went straight to the Empire rigs. These are 8 miles from land and very shallow. We started jigging for bait with a sabiki rig. The hardtails went in the fish box and the barrel belly fish went in the live well for drift lining for kingfish. Due to the current I kept the motors running all day. They are very quiet and only burn about a gallon an hour while idling. Normally I would turn them off but for some reason I kept them running which would be a big factor later in the day. We were getting kings and loosing a lot even though I was using wire. It was chaotic to say the least but some were making the fishbox. I was running out of 141 malin wire.

Towards the end of the day one of them casts a drift line out the side so it can drift back towards the other 4 drift lines out the back. the lines got tangled a few times. They dealt with it without us getting involved much and nothing got into the motors so all was well. As the line was drifting back something hits it and starts running out and around the rig. I looked up and saw this 8000 reel spool shrinking fast. the motors were already running and they were turned in the right direction so I slammed them in reverse and yelled for Brent to cast off. He was already in front and when I looked in his direction he was throwing the lineout of his hand. in this short time the spool was still getting dangerously thin. The guys with the drift lines still in the back started reeling them in and had to go to the bow to finish getting them in. This rig is not a well head it is a very large rig in 50 feet of water that holds a lot of mangrove snapper, red snapper, and cobia. I had no idea what we had on but it was big and running where ever it wanted to go. After chasing the fish in reverse all the way to the other side of the rig it headed out away from the rig. This allowed me to get the boat in a position I could get the fisherman in the middle of the boat and I could help the fisherman with the use of the boat. The first thought was a record king or cobia. As the fight wore on well over a half hour I was thinking maybe a monster jack Crevalle or a big shark. We still had no idea what was there but it was big. It tired out more and came near the surface. I noticed a flash way out there and I said Jack. My deckhand had a higher advantage and said yellowfin tuna. I said “No way not in these waters”. About 5 minutes later I saw the monster. What the heck was it doing in 50 feet of water at the Empire rigs? It was lost for sure but it was going to be mine unless something goes wrong before it is introduced to the gaff. We got 2 gaffs in it and The guys were jumping around and going nuts yelling in Vietnamese. The tuna was still hanging off the boat and with then crowding us I could not get it in the boat. I felt like I was in a crowd at times square on New Years Eve.

This topped off the box and we headed in with a limit of kings and our trophy fish that was lost. We started on the left side of the rig in the background and went behind it to the right side before I had control of the situation and ended up where we took this picture. Back at the dock it was time to tell an unbelievable fish story with the pictures to back me up. This fish topped the scales at 104 pounds.

The following day I had four guys and we went for yellows and some blacks. We lost 2 good yellowfin and were only able to bring in 8 blackfin tuna.

The next day I decked for RJ Hunting and fishing. This day we had a couple that fished Alaska a lot but never down here actually targeting tuna. We made the run out to a rig where we had been getting some good fish. Although we marked them very well they would not bite. About 8 other boats came and with no action they went on to other rigs. We were alone and I was thinking a move was in order. Mike choose to stay there and hope for something to get stupid enough to take our offerings. We were soon rewarded for our patience. After a little over a half hour fight this 110 pound beauty was ours.

The bite was slow and we lost a few but we ground it out. We had plenty of bait. Eventually she does battle with a good size blackfin.

We lost a few others throughout the day but just the yellow and black to show for our efforts. It is getting late and the customer said he had a good day and was very happy with the big boy in the box and was ready to head in. Our bait was almost done so we made one last drift while I cleaned up the boat a bit. The line the wife is feeding out starts screaming and you could tell it was a good fish right from the start. We belted her in with a harness and the battle was on. Once we landed this fish we were ready to head in with the icing on the cake.

By Paula JohnsonHi Everyone! email me! [email protected]

Wow! what a busy couple of weeks. Time is really flying by! Or is it, that I am slowing down and don’t realize it. No, that can’t be the case. The grandchildren have me on the go constantly! And I love it! My grandson complains because I just don’t sit down and do nothing. I have to be doing something all the time. Just wish my “something” was more like de cluttering instead of cluttering. Just can’t seem to get rid of things. It’s the “I might need that one day” feeling I get when I go to throw something out. When you are a crafter “Everything” is useable. You ever have that feeling?

I was looking for a pattern of a scarecrow that I had years ago. Of course, I lost it in Katrina and search as I did, I could not find it on the internet. I am sure it must have been retired years ago, as I made it back in the early 1990’s. It was a primitive scarecrow and stood about 5 feet tall. I really liked that piece but, things change and life goes on. I did find a scarecrow that I do like very much. Although, he is a little short, standing at a little over 3 feet tall and not primitive at all. He is painted with “Happy” colors and has a nice smile on his face and seems to actually like the little black birds that are with him. This cutie is a Renee Mullins design and is a lot of fun to paint. There are many pieces to this little guy. The top half of him is cut from 1/4” wood and the legs, feet, and back support pieces that help him stand are cut from 1” wood. There are 18 different colors of paint used on this little guy. He would look so cute on the front porch greeting your guests as they arrive for Thanksgiving dinner. The back stand could be replace by a stake and placed in the front yard to greet everyone that drives by. Wouldn’t he look cute standing next one of those smaller hay bales you can get at WalMart with a pumpkin sitting on the hay? I have a thousand ideas floating thru my head right now what can be done with this. I am sure if you started thinking about it you could create a beautiful Thanksgiving scene. Let the imagination run wild, is what I always say.

Have a Safe and Happy Halloween! Well, that’s my craft for this time. So, what will your next craft project be? Mine…I really don’t know. But, I know it will be fun. Or is it already sitting on my craft table?

Attention, companion animal caretakers! The ASPCA would like to point out these common-sense cautions that’ll help keep your pets safe and stress-free this time of year. If you do suspect your pet has ingested a potentially dangerous substance, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435

Have a Happy Halloween for all Pets and their Caretakers!

1. No tricks, no treats: That bowlful of candy is for trick-or-treaters, not for Scruffy and Fluffy. • Chocolate in all forms—especially dark or baking chocolate—can be very dangerous for dogs and cats. Symptoms of significant chocolate ingestion may include vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, increased thirst, urination and heart rate—and even seizures. • Candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can be poisonous to dogs. Even small amounts of xylitol sweetener can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar, which leads to depression, lack of coordination and seizures. In cases of significantly low blood sugar, liver failure has been known to occur. • Ingesting tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can pose a choking hazard or cause intestinal blockage.

2. Popular Halloween plants such as pumpkins & decorative corn are considered to be relatively nontoxic, yet they can produce gastrointestinal upset should pets ingest them. Intestinal blockage could even occur if large pieces are swallowed.

Top Safety Tips for Pet Parents

If you are an older kid or young teen, and going out with friends, make sure that your parents know where you are going and who you are going with. This may seem like a pain but they are your parents and they love you. They just want you to be safe.

If you can drive and are taking a bunch of friends to a party, make sure that you have enough gas to get there! You don’t want to run out on a dark street, all alone, like a bad horror movie!

If your parents give you a curfew, be home when they say. It builds trust between you and them and they are doing it for your own safety. If you are

going to be late, call them and let them know.

Vandalism is never cool! Throwing eggs at cars and houses is not cool. Someone has to clean it up and it could be you, if you get caught. You can also be arrested and punished as a juvenile. So, don’t think that it’s fun only if you can get away with it. It’s never the right thing to do! Think about how you would feel if someone did that to your house and how bad it would make you feel.

Hurting animals is never acceptable behavior! Some people use Halloween as an excuse to hurt cats and that is just wrong! Not only is it illegal in most places to hurt or torture animals and punishable by law, you should never hurt a helpless living thing.

Kids love Halloween! They get to dress up and get free candy! What a perfect holiday! Give your kids some precious Halloween memories that they’ll have for life.

Never, ever go into a strangers house or even ring their door for treats unless your parents are with you and say that it’s okay. There are some people in life that aren’t very nice to kids and you have to be careful. Always make sure that your mom or dad is within sight when you go out trick-or-treating.

Be careful when you cross a street. Make sure to look in both directions and make sure that there are no cars coming. If you have a little brother or sister with you, take their hand and help them get across the street, too. If the street has a stop light, wait until the cross walk light tells you that it’s okay to cross now, but still check before you cross, look both ways.

Get Ready to Get Really Dirty in November

By Tony Onellion

Saturday’s statewide election results produced few surprises as most state officials were reelected with little challenge to their incumbent status. Most local races came out the same, with the exception of two sheriff’s races, one in St. Tammany Parish, where the incumbent was forced into a runoff with Slidell Chief of Police Randy Smith and in Plaquemines, where incumbent Lonnie Greco lost outright to Jerry Turlich.

The gloves haven’t really come off in St. Tammany, where incumbent Jack Strain fell a few percentage points short of winning another four year term in the primaries. The gloves may not come off during the four week runoff campaign, especially if Strain receives the endorsement of Scott Illing, the newcomer to political office, who came in third. If the endorsement goes the other way, it could be “game on” in St. Tammany and things could get nastier as the Sheriff’s race heads towards Thanksgiving.

No such ‘make nice’ scenario will be expected as the two gubernatorial candidates, Senator David Vitter and Representative John Bel Edwards, meet in a Democrat verses Republican showdown. Vitter carries the baggage from his prostitution scandal and mea culpa while Edwards is a Democrat in a very Republican state. However, viewing the past six governors of this state, both the Democrats and Republicans have embarrassed and failed us, ending with 3rd string Presidential candidate Bobby Jindal and beginning with the first term of office of Edwin Edwards. Neither of the current prospects are what might be considered ‘statesmen” candidates, but then again, when have we really had a candidate of that caliber?

So, it’s the Amite former veteran and attorney verses Vitter, he of national prominence and notoriety. If you value keeping your clothing clean, do not venture between these two camps until Thanksgiving. Oh, it’s been a long time since Louisiana had a political delegation that struck fear, fascination and respect into the rest of the nation. And it probably will never come again, looking at the immediate horizon of political hopefuls. Hold your noses, Louisiana, and decide which medicine you will take come November 21st.

On a sports note, the World Series began with a matchup not destined to create record viewing numbers. The Kansas City Royals return to the Series while the New York Mets make their first appearance since 2000. The Mets last won the Series at the expense of the Boston Red Sox, who were still under the Curse of the Bambino. That was in 1986, but the Red Sox came through twice this century and won two Classic titles. The Mets beat sports most cursed team, the Chicago Cubs, 4 games to none, to reach the Series this year and earlier beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, baseball’s most cursed postseason team of the modern era. With a lineup loaded with overpaid, underperforming players, the Dodgers won their third straight Western Division title and then choked again as Los Angeles, led by baseball’s finest 1-2 pitching punch (on paper, during the regular season), could not advance for the fourth time since their last title in 1988. That’s 27 years, well before the first hint of social media, convenient cellphones, affordable and powerful personal computers and the Kardashians. Things are pretty bleak, sports-wise, in L.A., where the Lakers, Kings, UCLA Bruins and USC Trojans are just out of the top tier in their respective sports or way out of it.

Meanwhile, the LSU Tigers will have to clean up some sloppy gridiron play if they expect to beat Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa November 7th. This is not Saban’s best team, despite having perhaps his strongest and deepest defensive line during his tenure. But the Tigers show high vulnerability in virtually every aspect of special team play and at safety and they are thin at quality linebackers, blocking tight ends and offensive tackles. it will take every bit of LSU’s will to win at Bryant-Denny next week and they have the talent to do so. But will they have the discipline and mental toughness?
