The Perse prides itself on offering an all-round education that emphasises thevalue of participation in clubs, societies, overseas visits, sport, music anddrama.  We believe that extra-curricular opportunities help develop pupils'self-confidence, organisation, team working and leadership skills as well asproviding hobbies for life and a chance to make new friends.

This booklet is divided into different sections:

When you read this booklet, try to keep the following advice in mind:● Get involved! Identify two or three clubs you would like to be

involved in and choose them not necessarily because your friends do,but because you are interested in widening your own horizons.

● Think about your own personal qualities and what you would benefitfrom improving. Try and match them with an activity which will help.

● Commit yourself to attending regularly for at least a term to give it aproper chance.

● Be organised! Sometimes there will be clashes between activities butif you spot this early enough and talk to your form tutor then usuallythese can be resolved.

● If you feel that the School doesn’t offer an activity which you wouldlike to do, then get in touch with Mrs Richardson who will explorethe possibility of starting a new club. Perhaps you might wish toestablish your own club?

Modern Foreign Languages

JAPANESE, MANDARIN, ITALIAN

The School is very pleased to confirm our intention to continue running a package of extra-curricular language options that will provide interested students with the opportunity to studyanother Modern Foreign Language in addition to the main curriculum routes.

DetailThe programme will consist of two lessons a week : one short (lunchtime) and one long (afterschool). Lessons will commence in the first week of term as below:.

Japanese GCSE Year 1: Tues: 13:15–14:00 pm Thur: 16:00–17:30 pmMandarin GCSE Year 1: Tues: 13:15–14:00 pm Thur: 16:00–17:30 pmItalian GCSE Year 1: Tues: 13:15–14:00 pm Thur: 16:00–17:30 pm

Japanese GCSE Year 2: Tues: 16:00-17:30 pm Thur: 13:15-14:00 pmMandarin GCSE Year 2: Tues: 16:00-17:30 pm Thur: 13:15-14:00 pmItalian GCSE Year 2: Tues: 16:00-17:30 pm Thur: 13:15-14:00 pm

A three week trial period is available, free of charge, at the beginning of each academic year, after which a subsidised annual non-refundable payment of £430 is required to continue withthe year. Interested students can simply attend the initial lessons as marked above to begin thetrial period from September.

The School would offer this subsidised package on the understanding that at least three pupilswish to continue the course after the trial period.

Students are free to join from any year group, depending on language interest, competenciesand background. The most suitable year groups are perhaps Year 9 (for Y1) and Year 10 (forY2), looking to complete the GCSE ahead of the main curriculum GCSEs in Year 11. HoweverY8 pupils who are keen linguists may join too.

GCSE entryStudents that have completed both years of a course will have the opportunity to considertaking the public exam. This will only be advisable for those that have made sustained progressover the two years and a standard exam-entry charge will be applicable. Those students hopingto take the course through to examination would need to combine a robust approach to self-study with a natural proficiency for languages. Please note that the GCSE examination inMandarin is usually taken after three years of study (at the end of Y11 if started in Y9). Onlyheritage learners or pupils with advanced knowledge of the language sit the examinationafter two years of study.

Students that are not ready to take the examination can either:- repeat ‘Year 2’ the following year

- or take an internal Perse School examination which will result in a Perse School GradedCertificate

Circuit training aims to improve core strength, anaerobic fitness and stamina. The circuitformat means that boys and girls of all agescan train together even if they have verydifferent aims and levels. Having a high levelof aerobic fitness and a strong core will helpyou improve in any sporting activity, whetheryou are trying to move up a sports team, trainfor a race or just enjoy being competitive.

Fitness training can be dull when performedon your own and in circuit training we workin groups of two or three changing activityevery minute. The only thing we ask you tobring is a determination to improve.
