Princess & Macho Man

Sophie, is a precious beauty blessed with the looks and social graces of a Tonkinese. Sophie is five months of age, of Siamese and Burmese ancestry. She is a four pound, Champaign colored, green-eyed princess with perfect facial features. Through her intelligent nature, she learns commands easily and comes when she’s called. Sophie’s newest talent is dribbling a small rubber ball with her right paw. Next on the agenda, she will learn how to fetch like a dog! She is known for her lovable nature, listening, playing and afterwards collapsing from exhaustion. Murphy is her best friend. Tonkinese are sociable, intelligent and curious like their Siamese side, and calm and adaptable like their Burmese ancestor. Murphy is a He-Man Burmese who “Struts” His Stuff.” Murphy is a six month old dark campaign kitty with almond colored eyes, and short muscular body. He weighs only three and a half pounds. He was born at the Eden’s Pearls Cattery in Southern California and relocated to the Ranch Cordova area when he was ten weeks old. Murphy loves everyone, even strangers. He is known for his mild-mannered nature and visual acuity. His favorite female is Sophie, his house mate. The Burmese are ideal lap cats. They enjoy people and love to cuddly. Born acrobats, they like to play, are intelligent and good with children and other animals. Jenny and Milt Mitchell are the owners of these two beautiful cats. Jenny wanted a male cat and Milt wanted a female. Now everyone is happy!

Bin Laden—STILL a Thorn in Our Sides….

….so why am I NOT surprised? It is just incomprehensible to me that we can’t even have the death of the most wanted man on the planet and a sworn enemy of the United States not “spun” for political favor. Both Republicans and Democrats continue to rush to the microphones to spew their idiotic remarks about who deserves the “credit” for the killing of Bin Laden while trying to trash the other side. Do these people realize how stupid they sound? Democrats continue to turn a blind-eye to the fact that enhanced interrogations were successful in getting vital information to find where the coward was hiding and Republicans give back-handed compliments by saying President Obama “continued the Bush-era policies” to get him. How sad.

This effort was not about bolstering President Obama’s re-election prospects for 2012 any more than it was to put the golden seal of approval on everything President Bush did to protect the country in a post 9/11 world. It was about our intelligence agencies gathering the required information needed to put together a solid plan for our brave military men (specifically the Navy Seals who carried out this mission to perfection) to capture or kill the most-wanted man on the planet and they did so without any harm to our guys. Politicians who try to use it for political gain of any kind ought to be ashamed of themselves but you know as well as I do that very few of them have any shame at all. Again, not surprised at all.

On a final, more personal note, here’s hoping Luca Brasi is kicking Bin Laden’s ASS on a daily basis while they both “sleep with the fishes”…..

Ask Betty

Dear Betty,I live with two teenage boys and my husband and they misplace things all

the time…the remote, the phone, their shoes. I am going crazy finding all these things for them all the time. Got any suggestions? Perturbed in Pioneer Village

Dear Perturbed,I hear you! I use to get annoyed with my husband and son, also. Same thing as

you. They might be looking for something and it is sitting right in front of them, in the most obvious place. I would get pretty judgmental and the “ladies in the attic” would have a hay day! The “ladies in the attic” is what I refer to as all that chatter and the voices that go on inside my head. And if you are asking yourself, what voices? That’s the voice!

Well, you know that men and women’s brains are wired differently. Men were the hunters and needed to be extremely focused on one thing – watching and tracking the prey. Male brains are much more in tune with motion. That deer they are hunting can be spotted over 400 yards away if it is moving. If it is standing still, forget it! Males track and focus much better when something is in movement. I think it is why younger boys struggle with our education system more than girls. And love their gaming!

So when I learned this information I shared it with my husband and son. Instead of getting annoyed now, we joke about it.

Just the other day, my husband opened the refrigerator. A minute later, he says, “Honey, where’s the butter?” Well, the butter is always in the butter compartment in the door of the fridge. I found the “ladies in the attic” getting sarcastic and wanting to make him wrong for asking. Then, I remembered the wiring of the male brain. Instead I said, “Just pretend it’s moving! You’ll see it!” Three seconds later, he replies while chuckling, “Oh, there it is!!!”

Share this with your family and have some fun! Being human can be so messy! And so wonderful!

…Spread the word and make a difference! As I sat at an event hosted by

Courage 2 Be You in the Fall of 2009, I knew something needed to be done and I would put my efforts to stop human trafficking. I began with raising awareness, and volunteering at different events, and as soon as Orgin Coffeehouse opened I was first in line to volunteer my time for the freedom of a victim. As a barista, I volunteer 4 hours a week to share the important message and let the victims know we are coming for them to remove them from this vicious cycle of human indecency. As a student at CSUS, my goal is to raise awareness on campus and get more students involved in helping this matter.

Political Observation

State’s Reality Show is about New Tax Money California’s ongoing “reality” show has Gov. Jerry Brown trying to sell a tax extension plan in the midst of receiving news that an unexpected $6.6 billion showed up in state coffers, thanks to individual income taxes. This was viewed as a blessing by Republican legislators who have been opposed to Brown’s tax proposal since it was unveiled in January. However, a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling could push Brown’s tax increase proposal over the top. As California’s chief executive, Brown is tasked to clean and fix the state balance sheets and pay down the state’s chronic debt, a strategy he has adopted and is similar to what was proposed by Republicans. This strategy is giving Democratic legislator’s heartache, especially since Brown predicts it will take a couple of years of sacrifice to help bring the “wall of debt” down. Democratic legislators’ were hoping Brown would use the new windfall of income taxes to restore the program cuts before many of them get termed out. There is no question that California’s most important investment is the education of its children, which remain at the bottom of national rankings. So why not transfer all this new found monies into education? Priorities, that’s why. Brown is looking at the need to reduce the debt, which in turn helps education in the long run by providing needed funding to stabilize local education budgets. But, with a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling regarding prison overcrowding, it appears that investing in education may take a back seat again, especially with many democratic legislators being beholden to the prison guard union. Unless of course Brown’s budget increase proposal is approved, an option that Republicans may need to swallow to ensure public safety. Perhaps the writer of this reality show is Democrat.

Butter & Eggs Plus PortThe city of Petaluma celebrates its agricultural heritage in April with a

traditional hometown celebration that includes a parade down the main street, the “Cutest Chick Contest” and a Cow Chip throwing contest. It is great fun and truly reminds us about our roots. Families gather to enjoy all the festivities and reconnect with their neighbors.

Butter & Egg Days brought the sunshine that Saturday which was delightful, but I had two goals that weekend. The second was my visit to Sonoma Valley Port Works. A few years ago Deco port was introduced as an after dinner wine with a piece of chocolate. I have been hooked ever since. This was their first port and is made with a combination of hand selected California and Australian ports. It is blended and bottled at the Petaluma location alongside the river. The label is wonderful deco drawing that looks great on the shelf.

Aris portis made from Petit Sirah grapes that originated from along the Sacramento River in Clarksburg. The grapes picked later to increase the sugar level are hand and foot pressed. The wine is then fortified and placed in small oak barrels for aging.

Sherry makes me think of someone with a monocle lifting their pinky finger when imbibing. Duet, however, is for everyone. It glows in its glass and has a wonderful hazelnut essence. It is great with Cypress Grove Blue Moon cheese.

Not too many places where you can experience Butter & Eggs plus port in one day. The Portworks can be found on the web. There tasting room is open Monday, Tuesday and Saturday from noon to 5 in downtown Petaluma.

Act Right

Questions to CharlieHello Charlie, I am an actor just starting out in Sacramento. I was wondering what you would suggest I do first? Should I join a class or just start showing up to auditions? Should I move to San Francisco or LA or should I try to get experience here in Sacramento first? Can I use any headshot from a digital camera or is important to get a professional picture done? Thank you for your time. L.G. Thanks for your questions, L.G. Just showing up at auditions without really knowing how to audition probably isn’t the best idea. People remember their first impression of you for a long time, and if you aren’t prepared, it can take a long time to get back to see them again. You need some experience before hitting the “big city.” Partly for the same reason as stated above. To go to LA without being in the Screen Actors Guild makes it about 50 times harder to get any work, or an agent, etc. Don’t be in a hurry! The single most important tool an actor has is a good headshot. Spend the money to get a good one. I can make some recommendations. You can contact me at [email protected], or there are a couple of links to good photographers on my web site.

Take Advantage of Your Strength

You don’t need to know everything about Real Estate to invest in it. Investors often team up with each other to take advantage of one another’s strong points – there’s a lot that can go into a deal that makes money! While the combinations of skills can be endless, in general you only really need three basic components; Leadership (or the ability to create and execute a deal with a seller), knowledge and capability to rehab, and access to money. Now, if you have all three of these I don’t know why you’re still reading and not out making some serious cash! However, most people lack some or all of these important components – and if you want to get in the game you need to acquire them yourself, or you need to team up with others who have them. So if you’re a contractor, get out there and find someone with money who wants help investing it and a seasoned investor who can help find deals with you. Or, if you lack all three important components, try tagging along with investor teams who are currently making deals happen (hint; you can find them at your local REIA.) We can always use another hammer, and seeing how all the moving parts come together can go a long way towards giving you the confidence to go out and put a team together yourself! SAGEStudents for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

SAGE Mentor and Entrepreneurs that went to Chicago in May.

A global community of teenagers creating better futures for themselves and others. SAGE was founded in the late 2002, primarily as a new vehicle to introduce entrepreneurship to high school students. In 2003-2004, 16 high schools participated in the California competition, and over 200 high school students came to Chico State University at the end of March. Since then, we have grown to include ten US states and a total of 21 countries hosting national competitions. Today, over 4,000 high school students in 500 high schools are participating in SAGE.The SAGE mission is to help create the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders whose innovations and social enterprises address our world’s major unmet needs. Competition is Key!...The SAGE idea is modeled after interscholastic sports. A team of innovative teens is formed, either by the students themselves or in conjunction with an entrepreneurial teacher, adult ally or sponsor. The team can be part of an existing class or it can be part of a community organization like the Boys and Girls Club. At the end of the academic year, the teams travel to a tournament to present the results of their innovations to a panel of jurists recruited from the business and civic community. This year, the SAGE USA tournament was in Chicago, IL!

Later this summer, from July 22-July 26, teams from 15-20 countries will be vying to be this year’s SAGE World Cup Champion. This is the ninth year that the SAGE World Cup will take place. The past five years, the event has been in Shanghai, Odessa, Abuja, Brasilia and Cape Town. But this year, we are bringing the SAGE World Cup back to the USA. The host city in 2011 is Buffalo, New York, USA. People spend a lifetime searching for happiness; looking for peace. They chase idle dreams,

addictions, religions, even other people, hoping to fill the emptiness that plagues them. The irony is the

only place they ever needed to search was within.

Telling Children the Truth About Infidelity Part 3:

As feminists, we believe in the empowerment of women and of all human beings. If we are to be true to our ideals, we need to raise our children in such a way that doesn’t damage their ability to realize their potential and enjoy healthy relationships. Children whose parents are unfaithful are often handicapped by secrets and lies, but with the appropriate parenting and/or counseling, they can be empowered to understand their family’s struggles, learn from them and move on.

Depending on whether you are the betrayed or the betrayer, talking with your kids in an age-appropriate way about something this personal can be embarrassing, upsetting, or shameful, but it is necessary. The child needs to have his or her own feelings validated. He or she needs to hear that being upset about a parent’s infidelity is understandable. He or she also wants to hear that the betraying parent knows that what he or she has done has hurt not only the betrayed parent, but also the child.

Although it is the betrayer who owes the family an explanation for his or her infidelity, it is the betrayed parent who is most likely to talk with the children about what happened and why. Whichever parent attempts to explain parental infidelity, children may not always find the explanations satisfactory and can continue to feel upset and confused. This is because the betrayed parent may provide an explanation that includes his or her own resentments, or the betraying parent may try to justify his or her behavior in order to placate the child, which can exacerbate the child’s anger.

You may be in the wrong relationship and may decide to end the marriage, or you may decide to work on your marriage by going to counseling or by employing some other means. In either case, be mindful of the fact that lies and betrayal are affecting your children. Their ability to trust you and others with whom they’ll have relationships is dependent on how you handle the current crisis.

However you choose to assure your child that you and your spouse will be truthful from now on, honorable actions speak louder than your words. Usually after a crisis like parental infidelity, family dynamics change. If you use this difficult time to become more honest and open with your children, they will learn from your example about the importance of trust. And you will be giving them a priceless gift—the ability to trust, which is an essential element in any healthy relationship.

Moments of Happiness

Should You Smell the Roses?

I’m so lucky. I walk 1.9 miles every morning, after I’ve enjoyed hot coffee (black please) and reading. If you read what I wrote last month you know I read non-fiction books. At about 6:30ish in the morning I’m out the front door for a walk (rain or shine). I walk a series of streets where the front yards are nicely landscaped. I’m a fast walker, but I take in all the beauty as I move from sidewalk to side walk. Flowers are everywhere. All kinds of flowers and I don’t know all their names. I do know their colors…red, yellow, orange, blue, white, pink, white and pink, lavender. I got to see all these flowers blossom to full bloom during the Spring season.

Although I walk fast, I stop to smell the roses. I found that every rose doesn’t seem to give off a smell. But when they do, OMG—it doesn’t get any better than that. Taking a moment to smell the fragrance of a yellow rose or the whisper sexy aroma of a pink rose is “mmmmm” great. How lucky am I to have these wonderful moments every day?! I’m easy to please. I believe it’s the simple things in life that can bring daily happiness. Please send me your moments of happiness. We can all share simple pleasures. Email [email protected]

Ways to Raise Money Smart Kids (Part 3)

#1: Do they have ad sensibility? – Talk to your children about how to evaluate TV, radio, print, and digital ads. Encourage them to ask lots of questions about the ad. How does the ad make them feel when they see it/hear it? Is a price offered truly a sale price? Are there other products available that will do a better job, are less expensive, or offer better value? Remember to tell them that if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.#2: Drowning in Debt! – If you charge interest on small loans you make to your children, they will learn quickly how expensive it is to rent other people’s money. We did this with our daughter over the summer. She learned really quickly that a plane ticket costs a lot more when you pay for it with interest added on.#3: Paper or plastic? – Every time you open your wallet, you have the opportunity to use paper (cash/check) or plastic (credit/debit). When you choose to use plastic, be sure to explain to your children that you are borrowing the credit card company’s money. If you pay it back within a certain time period, you get to borrow it for free, but if you don’t, you have to pay them lots of extra fees such as interest, late charges and more.#4: Who’s knows your information? – Be very clear with children about protecting their personal information: name, address, passwords, social security number, bank account numbers, etc. Money fraud and identity theft can happen even with children. My daughter’s social security number was stolen when she was just a few years old! Shred receipts you don’t need for tax purposes and anything with a name and address listed on it.#5: Family Finance Councils – Sit down as a family for regular group discussions. Talk about money goals; the difference between cash, checks, and credit cards; wise spending habits; how to avoid the use of credit; the advantages of saving and even investments. As your children get older, you can also discuss what is happening with money and economics locally, nationally and internationally. All of this information will be important as they take on more responsibility for their own financial well-being. By helping them develop smart money skills early, you are setting them up for future success!Did you miss Part One in the series? Click here to read it! Did you miss Part Two in the series? Wannapreneur

The Importance of Getting Horizontal

I recently sat down with technology and investing legend Andy Kessler to ask him what up-and-coming business leaders like us need to do in order to maximize our firms’ successes.

Brett Owens: In your career as a hedge-fund manager, investor and entrepreneur, you found a series of rules to live and do business by…and one of these was inspired by an old buddy of yours, is that correct?

Andy Kessler: My old college roommate, Franz, would put the TV on and then pass out. Right before he passed out, he said, “When in doubt, get horizontal.” I would say, “I want whatever he’s having.”

So many companies are vertical. They do everything from soup to nuts. IBM used to do everything. Innovation couldn’t find a way into this vertical organization because it was slowed down by the slowest link. If it took an operating system five years, then who needed the next set of chips?

The modern style and the one that I think you can maximize profits and have longevity [with] is you just pick a horizontal slice. Intel owned the microprocessor space. They ended up with 90 percent of the market selling microprocessors into PCs. They didn’t sell PCs. They started making boards to make it easier for PC companies. But it was Compaq, IBM, Dell and all these other guys who would wrap the plastic around it.

The Internet went horizontal. Instead of just AT&T handling everything, there were companies like Cisco that would do the routers and other companies that would provide the fiber optic cables and companies like Yahoo! or Google doing the application layer above that. So you didn’t have to do the whole thing.

When I look at investment opportunities, private and public, I go, ‘Is this a horizontal or is this company trying to do the whole thing from soup to nuts?’ Because being horizontal, I think, is absolutely the way to go.

MY SISTER’S HOUSE FUNDRAISER“One Night Only”

Like Broadway, only better, on May 23rd, over 600 attendees gathered at The Crest Theatre for the 10th Anniversary Gala for My Sister’s House. Local celebrities entertained the guests on stage singing, lip syncing and dancing to songs with the words “night” or “sister” in the title or lyrics. Over $80,000 was NET to provide a safe haven for Asian women and children who are victims of domestic abuse. Kudos, to well know event Planner, Sharon Gerber, Six Degreez, Inc, who outdid herself during the fun-filled evening.

Games & Gaming

Run Avatar RunImagine literally running your way through thick brush or urban streets in hot

pursuit of your nemesis and the faster your legs run the faster your in-game avatar runs. Your heart is beating fast, beads of sweat oozing from your pours. No it is not a scene from science fiction movie, or some sort of laboratory experiment. This is right here right now technology that is being made available for in-home use thanks to the folks at GameRunner, Inc. a new start-up company based here in Sacramento. Inventor Charles Van Noland with many years of experience with various forms of technologies has developed their flagship product the GameRunner to provide the most realistic sync between virtual worlds and real worlds in the form of a treadmill game controller.

The secret sauce inside of the GameRunner can be found in all the mathematical algorithms Van Noland has engineered to provide a pure all-digital interface between the computer and the treadmill controller. This makes the interface silky smooth with the mechanics of the treadmill motion and the movement of the in-game avatar. The game controller allows you to stroll, walk, jog or sprint through any computer-generated 3D world, game or online 3D virtual world. It even works with Google Map’s street view functions. Imagine waking up one morning and taking a real walk around Central Park in New York City, or a stroll close the Venice Beach Boardwalk without even getting out of your pajamas or on an airplane. The possibilities are almost endless as to how GameRunner can be coupled with various technologies to provide not only mental stimulation and entertainment, but all also providing a vigorous physical workout keeping game players at the peak of physical fitness. You can purchase or find more information on the GameRunner at www.GameRunner.us

Bulls and bucking horses launching their heels in the air throwing dirt and cowboys is just part of the attraction of the Folsom Pro Rodeo. Fans struggle to stay dry-eyed as a huge American flag drops into the arena by parachute during stirring patriotic music in honor of the July 4th holiday. And don’t forget the fireworks.

Sacramento Region’s favorite Wild West event - the Folsom Pro Rodeo is back to provide a value-packed evening of excitement on July 1, 2 & 3. This year there will not be a July 4th performance to conflict with family traditions of barbecues and gatherings.

All the traditional rodeo events including crowd favorites of bull riding, bronco riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing and more will churn up the arena. Five and six-year-old cowboys and cowgirls will cling (hopefully) to wooly sheep in the mutton busting competition. Each evening finishes with explosive in-arena fireworks set to music in honor of the holiday.

The gates open at 6 p.m. and rodeo action beginning nightly at 7 p.m. with timed events such as steer wrestling, followed at 8:15 p.m. with riding events including popular bull and bronco riding. And to turn up the excitement volume just a notch, professional freestyle motocross rider Jesse Jolson will grab “air” as he sends his motorcycle to new heights with jumps and spins.

Just as the fireworks fade into memory each night, the action in Mike’s Golden Spike Saloon will heat up with the popular Brodie Stewart Band. Admittance to the saloon is free for rodeo fans. Dancing is encouraged!

Rodeo tickets are $24.50 for reserved seating (available online only). General admission is $19.50 for adults or $15 for children (12 and under) and seniors (over 62). Family value “buckaroo” packages are available online which includes 4 adult general admission tickets, four sodas, four hotdogs and four tickets for carnival rides for $60 ($96 value).

For more information, call the Folsom Chamber of Commerce at (916) 985-2698.

Within the Mind of a Millionaire

Building RelationshipsWrite down some ideas you can use to help remember names. Example:

sometimes you can use and an item on their clothing and match it with their name to help you remember. Say their name several times in your head and then repeat their name in your conversation. Keep a pen and paper in your pocket and as soon as you walk away from your new acquaintance write down their name.

You have to like yourself before you can like others. People will like you and respect you only if you respect yourself. Taking this one step further, you can help people to like themselves by making them feel valued. The greatest compliment one can receive is when someone says “I like myself better when I am with you.”

Finally, when you want to lift someone up, praise or compliment them. Taking the time to send a “thank you”, “congratulations”, or a note of encouragement is a simple gesture that can go a long way. E-mails are ok but never as meaningful as a hand written note that you took the time out of your busy schedule to write and drop in the mail. Little things can make a big difference and can build a bridge to a lasting relationship.

Successful Thinkers By Darren Bocksnick

Creating Worlds Through Words

All of us have encountered them- those wonderful folks in our lives that we’ve learned over time to never ask the question: “how are you doing?” Through experience, we’ve learned to avoid the person altogether or to at least, avoid the question for to ask it is to invite an overly-dramatized complaint session on all the pains, problems and pressures that have befallen them. Most of us would rather not surround ourselves with that kind of negativity, even if we run the risk of appearing inconsiderate or uncaring to the individual.

Though we may not even understand there’s a scientific and medical process at work that explain these negative states of being like the scenario described above, we only know that to associate with it may somehow start affecting us similarly. The science of Neural Linguistic Programming teaches us that we can create new neural pathways within our brain that ultimately change our outlook and thus, our reality. If we constantly speak of the negative, we create a negative neural pattern within our brain formulates a negative outcome- the reality and world we live in. Equally true, if we create a positive neural pattern, we will bring about a positive outcome and reality.

One factor that is characteristic of a negative individual with equally negative surroundings is their negative communication. Negativity breeds negativity. They speak of constantly being sick so not surprisingly, they are constantly sick. They talk of their financial woes so, true-to-form, their lives are often replete with financial hardship. Such individuals bespeak of loss, anxiety and despair and so without prejudice or impartiality, their speech invites the very things they loathe, right into their lives. Thus, their words have created the world they now live in.

If this is true of the negative; then how much the more is it true for the positive? Do you speak of success? Have you been talking of the positive things in your life? Have you filled your communication with inspirational comments that are aimed toward helping you achieve your dreams? Your words create the world you live in so make sure, you are speaking and creating the reality of your choosing.

Advising Couples I often find myself representing married couples in estate planning, real estate and business matters. The lawyering dynamics change considerably from representing just one client. I now have to craft a resolution which ultimately wins support from the other side, but that also wins support from both clients. Each person has his or her own idea of a “just result.” However, those differences of opinion don’t affect or change the underlying facts or applicable law. Nor ultimately does it affect or change the best result from an economic standpoint, which ultimately controls, or should control the outcome. My job is to lead the clients to that conclusion.

What’s Cooking with Mom

Cherry Brie AppetizerA wedge of brie cheese is

warmed, topped with a mixture of cherry preserves, chopped cherries, pecans, and orange peel to serve as an appetizer with crackers.Ingredients:One 7-ounce wedge of Brie cheese, chilled 3 Tablespoons cherry preserves or jelly2 Tablespoons coarsely chopped dried cherries or cranberries2 Tablespoons chopped pecans1/4 teaspoon grated orange peelWater crackers or French bread slicesProcess:

Place the brie on a microwave-safe serving dish; set aside. Place the preserves, cherries, pecans, and orange peel in a small pan and heat until preserves are melted, or place mixture in a small micro-safe bowl; heat on high in the microwave for about 30 seconds, or until melted. Place brie in the microwave and heat on high for about 30-40 seconds, or just enough to soften the cheese. Spoon the warm preserve mixture over the cheese and serve immediately with crackers or bread.

Italian Lemon Butter ChickenIngredients:1/4 cup champagne 5 tbsp lemon juice 2 cloves minced garlic 5 tbsp heavy cream 1/4 cup butter, chilled 1 lb spaghetti 4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp butter 1/4 cup Italian bread crumbs 4 oz bacon 6 oz mushrooms Process:Step 1… Add the lemon juice and champagne to a saucepan over medium heat and bring up to a gentle boil. Once the liquid has reduced by 1/3 lower the heat to a simmer and slowly stir in the cream. Once the cream has thickened, gradually add in the chilled butter and stir until it has become fully incorporated. Season the lemon butter sauce with salt and pepper. Remove the sauce from the heat and keep warm.Step 2… Next, bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook per the directions on the package. Drain the pasta and then set aside. Coat the chicken breasts with the breadcrumbs and grill until fully cooked. This is a healthier version, as the original called for the breasts to be fried in hot oil.Step 3…In a skillet, add the olive oil and cook the bacon, garlic, and mushrooms until the bacon is fully cooked, and the mushrooms are soft. Next, cut up the chicken breasts into strips and then add them to the skillet with the cooked bacon, mushrooms, and garlic. Step 4… Pour half of the lemon butter sauce into the chicken mixture and stir. Be sure to taste and add seasonings if needed. Feel free to add in more of the lemon butter sauce as desired. Then serve.

Omusoba - Japanese Omelet with Stir Fried Noodles and Vegetables Omusoba is a very popular dish in Japan that can be found in ‘family restaurants’ and izakayas (Japanese brasseries). It is an uncomplicated dish, remindful of what you would get in a Japanese household. Sweet and savory flavors

Ingredients:8 eggs 1 carrot, cut into small strips 1 onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 cups cabbage, chopped bite size 4 tbsp. neutral oil (grapeseed, canola) 2 tbsp. soy sauce 1 1/2 tbsp. rice vinegar 2 tbsp. water 1 tbsp. sake 1 tsp. sugar 1 sheet nori (dried seaweed), ground (I use a coffee grinder) or very finely chopped 6 oz (170g) chow mein noodles (ramen noodles are also good) Tonkatsu sauce Kewpie Mayonnaise (optional) salt & pepper

Process:Step 1…Boil your noodles just short of al dente (you will finish them in the pan), rinse in cold water and set aside.Step 2…Prep your vegetables.Step 3…In a large pan over high heat, add 2 tbsp oil, garlic and onions, and cook for 2 minutes. Add the rest of the vegetables and cook until they are almost soft (about 8 minutes).Step 4…Lower the heat and add noodles, water, soy sauce, sake, rice vinegar, sugar and nori. Mix well and cook for a couple of minutes.Step 5…While the veggies are finishing up in the pan, grab another pan to make your omelets. Use 2 eggs per omelet (break in a bowl and briefly whisk). Add oil to the pan and when the oil is hot, make your first omelet.Step 6…When the omelet is ready, put it on a plate and repeat the process until all your omelets are made.Step 7…Equally divide the veggie and noodle mix and spread it on one side of each omelet. Fold with the empty side, squirt a good amount of Tonkatsu sauce on top, add some kewpie mayonnaise too if you like to add creaminess, and serve!

Pine Nut Cookies These are delicious butter cookies with pine nuts / pignoli. These are NOT Italian Pignoli cookies. This pignoli / pine nut cookie recipe makes pine nut cookies that are just slightly sweet, so if your not a fan of sugary cookies, you will like them. Instead of pine nuts you could use any nuts such as peanuts or almonds. You could also add a glaze, frosting, melted chocolate or icing. It’s a very versatile butter cookie. Ingredients:1 large egg white beaten lightly1 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract 1/4 tsp kosher salt 3 large egg yolks 1 tsp grated lemon zest 1 cup pine nuts / Pignoli 1/2 cup sugar 2 sticks unsalted butter at toom temperature2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour Process:Step 1…Add the flour and salt to a medium sized bowl and whisk together.Step 2…Get a large bowl and put in the butter and sugar.Step 3…Beat together until the mixture is light and fluffy.Step 4…Add the vanilla extract, lemon zest, and egg yolks. Do not add any egg white!Step 5…Beat it all together.Step 6…Add the flour mixture slowly while mixing. Once the flour is all incorporated, stop mixing.Step 7…Put a lightly beaten egg white into a small bowl and put your pine nuts in another bowl. Make 1” balls of dough (about 1 heaping tbsp) and dunk the top and roll the sides of the dough balls into the egg white. Leave what will be the bottom of the balls free of egg white as you do not want the pine nuts to stick to the bottom. Then roll the top and the sides of the dough balls in the pine nuts.Step 8…Put the dough balls onto sheets of parchment paper spaced 2” apart with the pine nut side facing up. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 18 minutes, or until the pine nuts are getting golden brown and the pine nut cookie edges are lightly golden.

When I recently met Gary Stalick and asked why he started a community newspaper, I was deeply touched by his story. I suggested that he share this story with his readers. Long story, short, he asked if I would write the story…so here it is! On September 11, 2001 --- a day we will never forget --- Gary witnessed a life-altering, event on television as airplanes flew into and destroyed the twin towers in New York City . His reaction was, “Oh, no, this is my country. I have got to do something. I have got to step up and do something. But what?” A day later that something grew clearer. Gary walked outside and saw the American flag flying free on his neighbor’s home. He was both humbled and inspired. You see, his neighbors were originally from Iran, and knowing what great people they were, thought they might be scared His need to do something grew stronger. Gary now wanted to do something for the world, not just his country. He realized that he may not be able to do something for the

entire world but he could start to make a difference in the smaller world of his own community. What could he do? What would make a difference? A paper…a newspaper about our community…stories about people…the goodness of people…the inspirational stories that touch us all...the celebrations of life. That’s what he could do! And so, Gary’s vision of bringing people in our community, together, was born. Then, reality kicked in. He had no idea how to bring a community newspaper into existence. For nine months he read dozens of books, studied, and researched. He constantly had to override his fear and logic of doing something he did not know how to do. But his commitment to bring people together propelled him forward. In August 2002, the first edition of the Gold River Community Newspaper was published. On the front page was a photo of his 16-year old daughter at the raising of the American flag at our own Gold River Community Center! In this interview, Gary said a provocative thing, “I

miss front porches. Neighborhoods with people sitting out on their porches are conducive to people stopping, chatting and connecting for a few minutes.” One of the challenges with Gold River is that we have no porches. We automatically drive into our garages, close the door and disconnect ourselves from our local world. We turn on the news and get bombarded with all the problems in the big world. The irony is that stopping and talking with a neighbor or heaven forbid, a stranger walking by, actually has us connect at a basic level of our humanity…through conversation. Almost nine years later, sitting in Starbuck’s – a favorite connection place in Gold River– Gary finds himself getting re-inspired by what a small local paper can provide for people in our ever-disconnected, isolated world. A community paper is a warm, friendly expression of the local world we live in. Although the strict CC&Rs of Gold River would not allow us to build front porches on our houses, it occurs to me that the Gold River Community Newspaper is much

like a front porch. Let’s start using it more in this simple and powerful way! Share your stories, big and small. You never know who you might touch or connect with in our community…in our world. Take that slogan of ‘think local’ to heart and then, put it into action. You may not start a newspaper but smile and say “good morning!” to the next stranger you pass on the trail. Wave thanks when another person stops their car and lets you cross in the parking lot. Leave your garage door open for a few minutes and chat with the next person walking by. That would make a positive difference for you, for another human being and for our community. You add to the goodness of life! Thank you, Gary, for your vision, your story, and your commitment to our community! Here’s to front porches and the Gold River Community Newspaper --- bringing us together!

We’ve all been brought up with the idea that every spring we should clean our homes from end to end and freshen up for our health. This might have come from the idea that in spring, things are fresh and new and cleaning the home will renew your feelings about yourself.

1. Improve Your Health Without Diets Or Pills

Pollens, mold, and mildew spores are dumped into the air at incred-ible intensity. Pollutants from car exhaust, burning fields, and cigarette smoke were also dumped into the stagnant air. All this gunk drifted into your home and when you closed the house up, where do you suppose it’s been ever since? It got trapped in your home. Thanks to today’s air tight, energy efficient homes, your family and guests have been breathing that recycled air-garbage. 2. Your Home Is Your Personal Breeding Ground For Invisible Crit-ters And Varmints In addition to the air-garbage from outside, you have uncontrolled vermin inside. Too tiny to see, dust mites live in your carpet, upholstery, bedding and drapes by the millions. By now their dead bodies and dung are in your house by the billions. They live off your dead skin as do billions of bacteria in your home, including those that cause staph and strep infections. Ever wonder why so many people get strep as soon as it cools off outside? Now you know. Plus, fleas brought into your house last summer don’t die off like they do outside when it freezes. Bacteria and germs have been breeding in the warm fibers of your carpet.

3. Does Your Bedroom Smell Like A Gerbil? Here’s Why…

Besides being Harmful to our health, all the germs, bacteria and crit-ters that live off dead skin from us and our pets, stink. They eat skin and along with other excretions, put out tainted methane gas which smells bad. 4. Heavy Soil From Outside Sifts Deep Into Your Carpet Never To Be Seen Again Until the winter rains have washed the sand soil from the roads and sidewalks, heavy soils from outside are tracked onto your carpet, wiggle down deeper than your vacuum can reach and stay there, grinding your carpet down into worthless fibers. You’ll find them in your vacuum bag.

Cleaning now, will get rid of sandy soils before they do lots of damage or get too deep.

5. Finally – Someone Who Can Remove Those Ugly Black Lines By The Walls, or Crevice of Steps I’ve had new clients call us to evaluate some embarrassing black lines where the carpet meets the wall and at the edges of steps and jagged lines under curtains. They told me no carpet cleaner could get them out and in some cases they had tried up to five different firms. But the black remained. I inspected these lines and found the cause to be an air filtration problem. With extra effort and knowledge on our part, the ugly black lines can be removed. I told the client this and they were apprehensive. I also told them if it didn’t come clean as I described, they would not have to pay us. How’s that for confidence? Yes, we cleaned the ugly black lines. Yes, our clients were happy. 6. Do-It-Yourself Folks Get What They Paid For… …Nothing The problems I have described here can’t be fixed very

well with any home remedy. Sure you can dust and do the basic cleaning just fine. But drapes, fine rugs and upholstery often cannot be safely cleaned except by a professional. Let’s face it. If those puny little cleaning systems could even come close to the effectiveness of a trained professional using a $55,000.00 steam cleaning system, no one would pay the money for them. But There’s Still One Thing You Should Know . . .
