TWO NEW KIDS IN TOWN Meet Lily, a sweet, cream colored Standard Poodle. Lily lives with JoAnn and Bill Raney. Lily’s companion at home is an 11 year old Lhasa Apso, who is just beginning to warm up to the new family pet. Lily is named after the actress Marlene Dietrich that played in the film Lili Marleen. Lily is very bright, she has learned to sit, stay, fetch, shake and retrieve in the five short weeks she has been at her new home in Gold River. She loves to walk on the nature trails in Gold River and is very curious when she sees the wild animals nearby. Sonny Burton, who just turned 5 months, is a mighty six pound Bolognese, a rare toy breed that originated as far back as the Roman times. Because of its beauty, grace and charm, the Bolognese became a favorite of the nobility during the Renaissance. Sonny lives with Kay, this writer, and Brian of Gold River and has two tolerant “sisters.” Bebe, age ten also a Bolognese and Daisy, age five a Maltese.

Due to his Italian descent, Sonny’s registered name is Santino, he is called Sonny. As his heritage implies, Sonny is a wild, outgoing, adorable little guy that loves everyone. Sonny enjoys his morning rides in his “Dads” convertible with his sisters, all completely harnessed for the auto. On these daily trips he has met many new friends that are walking, when he sees people he whimpers, and his tail starts wagging, he wants to play with each and every one of them. The Poodle is instantly recognizable as one of the most popular breeds in the world. The Poodle has served man in many ways including guide dog, guard dog, military service dog and circus performer. When playing, six pound Sonny chases 25 pound Lily around the yard. Lily is such a Lady.

Green Energy By Geof Lambert

Legal Ease by Michael L. Hanks

Are Attorney Fees Too High? Clients often complain about attorney’s fees as being too high. They would make the same complaint about medical bills and hospital costs, except that those are typically paid by insurance companies or the government. Attorneys, like every other competitive business, have to deliver value over the long term or they won’t attract clients. Most (but clearly not all) attorneys I know try diligently to hold down fees, both as a matter of professionalism and as a way to attract and hold good clients. Like any other scarce resource, the skills of experienced and skilled attorneys are allocated by price. Considering the large number of attorneys eager for your business (just look on line or in the phone book), no attorney is able to exercise monopolistic pricing. The plain truth is that attorney’s fees are set strictly by competition in the market place.

Show Me the Money – Clean

& GreenIs there money to be made in furthering

clean and green energy technologies? After all, money is what makes the world go around, right? According to the Smart Energy Group based in Washington D.C., about $61.3 billion in stimulus spending on energy programs are being unleashed by The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. In addition to major federal, state and local tax incentives, the U.S. Department of Energy currently plans to spend billions of dollars on R&D for clean, renewable energy, as well as distributing more than $3.3 billion in smart grid technology development grants, and an additional $615 million for smart grid storage, monitoring and technology viability assessment programs. John Chambers, CEO of Cisco Systems, recently told reporters he foresees a $100 billion business opportunity in communications equipment that will upgrade aging electrical infrastructure into a more efficient smart grid. If you would like learn more about the Smart Energy Group and look into resources and directories they have available you can visit their website at www.SmartEnergy.org .

We came to The Lodge for my wife. We stayed for both of us.

What do Gold River residents Ron Hughes and Richard Bungay have in common? The desire to ride a motorcycle prepared by Richard’s brother – Mike, to a land speed record in Bonneville this coming September. Both Ron and Richard will be riding a specially prepared (add year) BSA 250 in 4 classes at the Bonneville Salt Flats during the races that occur the first 3 days in September. Mike Bungay, a veteran of previous land speed record attempts, enlisted the help of Ron Hughes and his brother Richard to ride the motorcycle, so that he can concentrate on getting it set up correctly. Both Ron and Richard have diverse racing backgrounds, so riding on the salt flats is an experience they are looking forward to. For those who have never heard of the Bonneville Salt Flats or don’t know how the records are set, the course is 3 miles long. The first mile is used to get up to top speed, the second mile is timed for your record and the third mile is dedicated to slowing down and stopping. Once that is done, you turn around and do it again. Your time is the average of your two runs. As Mike explained

to Ron, “all you have to do is hold the throttle wide open, lay flat on the tank and keep it between the black lines that designate the course.” Mike Bungay who races classic motorcycles is building the bike in his shop in Davis. He expects to have the engine ready for testing by the end of July and will spend August fine tuning it. Conditions at Bonneville are a real test of men and machines. With temperatures that can exceed 120 degrees and an altitude of more than 5,000 feet, the power output of an engine has to be de-rated by 20% or more over the same engine at sea level and lower temperatures. Once the races are finished, Mike and Richard are going on to Miller Motorsports race track, where Tony Foale will be racing one of Mike’s Aermacchi race bikes. Ron will be meeting a group of friends in the desert in Nevada for 5 days of riding dirt bikes and exploring some of the remote ghost towns in the region. We will follow their adventures in September and look forward to a full report from them upon their return.

What happens when you load too many photos or papers under the refrigerator magnet? It falls to the floor. Why? Has it lost its magnetic properties? No. It was simply a weak magnet and therefore could only attract a little. We all hold this same “magnetic ability” to attract all of life’s experiences. By empowering their mind, some have enhanced their magnetic ability — thus attracting most anything they think of. While most, unaware of their own power of attraction, are like the fridge magnet that can’t attract the simplest things in life. How strong is your magnet? — Joe Vitale

How to Get BusinessThe Codfish lays 10,000 eggs, the homely hen but one. The

codfish says not a word to tell what she has done. The hen cackles and struts about to say what she has done. The fish we care naught about, while the homely hen we prize. Which only goes to emphasize THAT IT PAYS TO ADVERTISE. Call 224-6624 to get information.

Business Opportunities in the Stimulus Package

Step 3: GO!By: La Ronda Bowen

You have registered as a small business with the California General Services Administration and with the federal CCR. You have made a list of the agencies that can use your services and looked at one or more of the procurement web sites to familiarize yourself with the opportunities available. You have practiced a 30-second commercial to present your business to the vendors that need your services. You are now ready to GO get the business you want.

Here is how to succeed. 1) List the name and phone number of the procurement officials at the ten agencies with which you most want to do business. 2) Make a one-hour appointment with yourself to call and introduce your business to those officials. 3) Call and use the 30-second commercial you have prepared. At the end of your commercial, ask this question: “How do I become one of your preferred vendors?” Listen to the response and take notes. This next step is critical. Say “Thank you for your guidance. If someone at your agency was going to use my services, who do you think that person might be? Write down the name, confirm the spelling ask for a phone number and e-mail address. Say “Thank you.” Then ask, “When I contact them, may I tell them that you referred me?” Write that name, contact information and a notation of the referring person. This new person is now number 11 on your “to call” list. When you call them, remember to say, “Mr. (or Ms.) ___ suggested I call you.” Then give your commercial and follow the script above. Repeat this process every day.

If the bid date has passed for a procurement you are interested in, call and introduce yourself anyway. Ask the procurement officer who won the bid, get a name, phone number and e-mail and add the winner to your list. Let the procurement officer know you want to be on their e-mail list for future solicitations. Remember that the east coast is three hours ahead of CA, so you can make those calls from 6:30-7:30 am. Follow a similar process for California contracting opportunities as well as for state and federal grants.

Be an excellent vendor. Keep your word, perform quality work at fair prices, and always ask for referrals. Email and tell us about your success. GO. SUCCEED. BE PART OF THE ECONOMIC SOLUTION!

Let us know about your success. As always, we welcome your questions.

Eye-Fi Geo Adds GPS Info to iLife for Life Geotagging photos sounds good, but it can become a laborious process to mark the source of every photo in your photo library. Now the Eye-Fi Geo will bring automatic geotagging to every photo you take.

Essentially an SD card with GPS and Wi-Fi, the 2GB Eye-Fi Geo (like Eye-Fis of yore) fits into any SD card slot. It records location information along with your pictures through integrated GPS. Then it can sync over Wi-Fi to your home computer or internet sites of choice. Fully iLife ‘08 and ‘09 compliant, the Geo may sound a lot like the Eye-Fi Explore. It’s essentially the same thing, but the Geo runs $60 and doesn’t have any monthly fees. Instead, the GPS data is a one time cost included in the purchase.

T-Mobile’s Touch Pro2 Continues the Windows Mobile 6.1 Shenanigans August 12T-Mobile’s releasing the Touch Pro2, a Windows Mobile 6.1 affair from HTC, on August 12. It’s got the same old stuff: 802.11 b/g, 3.6-inch screen, slide-out keyboard, 3.2-megapixel camera, blah blah TouchFlo. Even HTC’s moving away from Windows Mobile now.

Kodak Zi8 Wallops Flip With 1080p, Image Stabilizer and SD Slot Kodak’s almost-glimpsed product tease was indeed a new pocket cam, potentially their best yet. Launching with an MSRP of $180, it will overpower the Flip Ultra HD with 1080p recording, an electronic image stabilizer, SDHC card slot and other enhancements. The list of improvements continues: The Zi8 has an external mic jack, and it’ll shoot 5-megapixel stills, track faces of subjects and, according to Kodak, “see more details and accurate colors in low light.” Now that’s something we’re looking forward to, especially since low light seems to be the biggest bane of these Flip-class cameras.

What Do Customers Want? Just Ask Them!

When starting a new business, it can be really tough to figure out what your potential customers want. After all, you might have a killer idea for a product or service. Maybe you’ve even got something half built.

But then, often, people get stuck. What next? Is this something people really want? How do you get your product or service from half-baked to fully-baked?

It’s a tough bridge to cross – I know, I was there myself not too long ago!

We had a half-working product based on a “cool” concept. And we didn’t know where to go from there. What else did the product need? How should everything tie in together?

My co-founder and I spent a lot of time scratching our heads about this…fiddling with the product ourselves…just racking our brains.

Fortunately for us, an experienced entrepreneur set us straight. He said – just find someone to use your product, and ask them what they think!

Boy, sounds obvious now – but when you’re down in the trenches, sometimes you overlook the simple answer!

So we got our half-working product into the hands of folks in our target market – attorneys, consultants, and other folks who bill hourly. And we asked them what they thought.

Soon, we were getting more feedback than we could handle! And we rolled the common suggestions into the product. And then we asked them what they thought again.

Eventually, we had something that hit the proverbial “sweet spot” – and really just by asking! So the moral of the story – don’t try to guess what a potential customer wants. If you ask them…they’ll probably tell you!

The Harry Hype

*Boom*End credits roll in the theater. The curvy ink writing shows the stars, director, and crew. The end has finally arrived after watching over 2 hours of Harry Potter and friends scurry across the screen. There were a few interspersed claps throughout the theater but overall, the crowd was not impressed. The sixth feature in the eight movie series, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince met expectations but did not exceed. The movie covered the highlights of the novel but lacked a lot of the details that there is no time for due to movie time constraints. The long awaited Potter film delivered with its signature special effects, Quidditch, and Harry Potter heroics. The romantic antics added comedic relief to the movie. Ron’s incessantly swooning girlfriend and more frequent snogging added a more mature angle and depicted character growth. Though the film was a valiant effort, time has taken its toll on this movie and not necessarily for the better. It has been over a year since the last Harry Potter movie showed in theater. With time, the films have lost continuity. The actors have aged significantly. The Weasley Twins are no longer identical and now, Ginny is taller than Potter. It has been so long since the last movie that there has been a lot of build up surrounding the movie and its premiere. To some extent, this has hindered the movie because viewers have raised the bar in their mind to what the next movie would look like. There are diehard fans who have followed Harry Potter since its genesis as The Chamber of Secrets book took the world by storm and in now translated. The general consensus was that the movie was good but not great. The director is already faced with a challenge of improving from its previous movies in the series. Few movie series have been this successful with this many sequels It was a good movie, it simply lacked the boost that takes it from good to great.

points that have no relation to one another.” —Dr. Mark Hyman: Author, medical consultant

Structuring Real Estate Deals That

Work in the Current Market

John Groom is a different kind of guy -- definitely not what you normally think of when you think of a CPA. He is the accountant we all wish we could find -- one who actually understands your business, has been there, owns properties, does deals, and who knows income taxes and deal structuring inside out, and John is in the Real Estate game himself. The good news is that John Groom is coming to town. With what is happening around here, do you have that sneaking suspicion that some people around you are making a lot of money while you aren’t (yet)? It’s true. The game has changed, and most of the money is now being made by the ones who know how to locate and structure their deals in unique ways that work for both sides. For most of us, signing the contract and going to the bank just doesn’t cut it any more. Want to see if there is a way out of that negative cash flow good deal? Ask John -- he has helped solve those problems with some of the best and is willing to share that knowledge. Of course, all of this will be within the subtext of what John does for his clients --- minimizing both income taxes and legal liability. The back and forth of making a real deal actually work is what he enjoys most, so if you have something you don’t mind the rest of us hearing about, and you would like some free real-time advice from one of the best in the country, bring it. Not only is John a good speaker, he’s a lot more “go” than “show”. He has been there and done most of it, plus he is a great teacher. So prepare to leave excited, and more importantly, armed with specific techniques to make a move. His website, www.numericorp.com explains more of what he does, but really, no need to check out the website -- just show up and check out the real thing.

The Bank or Credit Union Courtesy Call One of the most embarrassing moments in any banking customer’s experience is having misjudged his/her bank balance and accidentally over drawing his/her account. In any banking operation’s customer list, there are many who do enough business with the institution to justify its having a clerk who is responsible for monitoring overdrafts and notifying customers before they have incurred a fee and an embarrassing overdraft. Which is more profitable: a one-time $35 fee for a bounced check, or the appreciation and loyalty generated when a customer has been treated with the utmost dignity and been assisted in avoiding embarrassment? How many banking customers have been chased away by thoughtlessness? So in your own business give your clients a courtesy call, show appreciation. Be profession, warm and friendly.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.C. S. Lewis

Annual Fundraiser The Bow-Wow Beauties “Putting on the Dog” Kay Burton’s Bow-Wow Beauties hit the doggie runway on Saturday, June 27 to benefit the Sacramento SSPCA. Rick Johnson, SPCA Executive Directive, was the guest emcee for the event in which anything can happen when a large variety of dogs, all sizes and breeds were dressed in the latest canine fashions. The pet’s performance and raffle highlighted the SSPCA annual fundraiser. “The show brings people and animals together and helps make the public aware of the need to rescue and adopt the homeless animals in the Sacramento community.” Kay Burton originated the pet show and fundraiser fifteen years ago.

JULY 19, 2009 In the tradition of a true Concours d’Elegance, The Presidio of San Francisco Concours brought motorcar enthusiasts together to enjoy a grand automobile show on the green at the Presidio MAIN POST. This truly spectacular venue is nestled in one of the most beautiful public spaces in the country, the Presidio of San Francisco. A national park characterized by many wooded areas, hills, and scenic vistas, the setting

overlooks the famed Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay. The Concours weekend of events Kicked-off on Friday evening with The Bentley Bash; a gathering of motorcar enthusiasts for an evening spent enjoying the art of the automobile. With Bentley as one of the featured marques for the Presidio Concours d’Elegance, attendees experienced the newest models from Bentley as well as select Bentley motorcar entries from the concours held at Bentley San Francisco. A benefit The Concours Foundation. On Saturday evening attendees gathered on the patio at Americano Restaurant for a fabulous display of concours entries along with gourmet food and wine. The Concours will showcase not only one-hundred years of motorcars, but also offer a Cigar & Scotch Lounge, fashion show, gourmet food and wine tasting. Free to the public will be both green car and vintage military vehicle displays as well as an exotic motorcar display featuring the newest models from Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini. The Concours d’Elegance is a motorcar event like no other, so our belief is we need to put on a fete like no other. The Presidio lends itself to our vision of an automobile exhibit that will complete the California Concours experience. Since its inception, the Concours d’ Elegance has provided an opportunity for its attendees to experience automotive history in the physical perspective. By placing a Concours against the backdrop of the fabled San Francisco Presidio, this inaugural Concours d’Elegance combines history of the motorcar with one of California’s truly significant landmarks. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Presidio Historical Association. This non-profit organization, founded in 1959, has a primary focus of interpreting and preserving the history of the Presidio of San Francisco. What’s Cook’n With MomZucchini Breakfast CasseroleIn my garden, there lives The Beast, a 5 foot tall zucchini plant that puts out 2 full-sized zucchinis a day. Even with all the great zucchini recipes we have, it’s hard for three people to consume 14 zucchini a week. (There’s also a pattypan squash plant.) So around this time of year I’m always looking for ways to use up my overflowing

vegetable drawer of zucchini. This is an easy-to-make strata-like breakfast casserole with grated zucchini, tomatoes, basil, ricotta, and Parmesan. (The tomatoes and

basil are growing like mad now too.) Actually I’m not sure what to call it. Breakfast casserole seems to fit because of the eggs, though we ate this for lunch. You could

also call it a strata. It’s like a frittata but it’s baked, not made on the stovetop (though I’m sure you could make a frittata out of it). The inspiration for it comes from a “cuajado”, or a baked frittata popular in Sephardic cooking. This isn’t a

cuajado, but the flavors are there, and they’re terrific together.Ingredients

• 6-8 eggs• 1 cup ricotta cheese• 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan

cheese• 1/4 teaspoon Tabasco sauce or

other hot chili sauce• 1 teaspoon salt• 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground

black pepper• 3 cups grated zucchini (from 2-3 fresh zucchinis)• 1 1/2 cups chopped plum tomatoes (from 4-5 fresh tomatoes),• 1/2 cup sliced fresh basil (from about 20 leaves)*• 4 cups cubed day-old bread (from about 4 slices)

• Olive oil

*Chiffonade basil by stacking a few leaves on top of each other, roll them up like a cigar, slice thin, starting at one end of the cigar and working your way down.

Method

1 Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl beat the eggs. Add the ricotta and beat until smooth. Mix in the grated Parmesan cheese, Tabasco, salt and pepper.

2 Prepare the vegetables and bread. Once you chop the tomatoes, squeeze excess moisture out of them by pressing them in a sieve, or wrapping in paper towels and squeezing. Add the tomatoes, basil, and zucchini to the egg mixture. Moisten the bread cubes with a little water then squeeze out any excess moisture using paper towels. Mix the bread cubes into the egg mixture.

3 Coat the bottom and sides of a 9x13 baking dish generously with olive oil. Pour the egg vegetable mixture into the baking pan and even it out in the pan. Place in the middle rack of the oven. Bake for 30 minutes at 350°F. The casserole should puff up and brown lightly. If it hasn’t after 30 minutes at 350, increase the heat to 425° and cook for 5-10 minutes further. Remove from oven and let cool on a rack for 10 minutes before cutting into squares to serve. Makes 6-8 portions.

Blueberry PieIt’s blueberry season!

When blueberries are in season, what better to do with them (other than eating them straight from the basket) than make blueberry pie? Blueberries have been found to be a “superfood”, so good for you that you should go out of your way to eat them. They neutralize free radicals, protect your heart, improve your vision, and protect against degenerative brain diseases. Yet another good reason to make and eat blueberry pie.

Ingredients

Crust: One double recipe for all butter pie crust dough

Filling ingredients:

• 6 cups of fresh (or frozen) blueberries, rinsed and stems removed (if using frozen, defrost and drain first)

• 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest

• 1 Tbsp lemon juice

• 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for thickening)

• 1/2 cup white granulated sugar

• 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

• 2 Tbsp butter (unsalted), cut into small pieces

Egg wash ingredients:

• 1 egg

• 1 tablespoon milk Method

1 Prepare the crust. Roll out half of the dough to 1/8-inch-thick circle on a lightly floured work surface, about 13 inches in diameter. Fit the dough over a 9-inch pie pan, and trim the edges to a 1/2 inch over the edge all around the pan. Put into the refrigerator to chill for about 30 minutes. 2 Gently mix the blueberries, sugar, flour, cinnamon, lemon zest, and lemon juice in a large bowl. Transfer them to the chilled bottom crust of the pie pan. Dot with butter pieces. Roll out remaining dough to the same size and thickness as the first. Place on top of the berry filling. Tuck the top dough over and under the edge of the bottom dough, and crimp the edges with your fingers. Transfer the pie to the refrigerator to chill until the dough is firm, about 30 minutes. Heat oven to 425°F. 3 Whisk egg and milk together to make an egg wash. 4 Remove the unbaked pie from refrigerator. Brush the top with egg wash. Score the pie on the top with 4 cuts (so steam can escape while cooking). Place the pie on the middle rack of the oven with a parchment paper or Silpat lined baking pan positioned on the lower rack to catch any filling that may bubble over. Bake for 20 minutes at 425°. Reduce heat to 350°F and bake for 30 to 40 minutes more or until juices are bubbling and have thickened. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Let cool completely before serving. Makes 8 servings.

Spicy, Citrusy Black BeansI do believe these are the best black beans I’ve ever eaten in my life. My friend Suzanne has been teaching me some of her favorite recipes this summer (lucky me!), and this spicy black bean recipe is one she couldn’t wait to share. Suzanne usually makes a big batch for her family (husband and three hungry teenagers included) with enough for some leftovers during the week. The beans have layers of chili flavor, balanced with zesty orange, lime, and cilantro. They are spicy, but you can control the level to your taste, depending on which and how much chili to include.

Spicy, Citrusy Black Beans Recipe Ingredients

• 4 cups dried black beans • 2 1/2 quarts (10 cups) water• 2-3 fresh sprigs oregano, or 1 Tbsp dried• 3 bay leaves• 6 small or 3 large sage leaves• 2 teaspoons salt• 4 Tbsp olive oil• 2 yellow onions, chopped• 2 chopped peppers – bell pepper, Anaheim, or jalapeño (your choice,

depending on taste for heat), seeds, stems and ribs discarded• 6 cloves crushed garlic• 2 Tbsp Ancho red chili sauce, or chili powder or Tabasco to taste*• 1-2 teaspoons of puréed chipotle in adobo, chipotle Tabasco, or chipotle

powder (to taste)• 1 Tbsp cumin, (crushed whole toasted cumin seed is best, if possible)• 3 Tbsp frozen orange juice concentrate or 1/2 cup fresh orange juice • Juice of 1 lime• 2 Tbsp rice wine vinegar• Chopped fresh cilantro for garnish

If using prepared chili sauce or chili powder, and if cooking gluten-free, make sure to purchase gluten-free products.

Method

1 Prepare the beans. Rinse and sort the beans, discarding any stones or shriveled beans. You can soak the beans overnight in cold water (cover with several inches of water) OR pour enough boiling water over them to cover by a few inches and soak them for an hour OR skip the pre-soaking step. Soaking will speed up the cooking process. If you soak, discard the soaking liquid after soaking.

2 Add beans to a large pot with 2 1/2 quarts (10 cups) of water. Add oregano, bay leaves, and sage. Bring the beans to a boil and reduce heat to a simmer. Cook until the beans are soft, but not quite done. The time will vary depending on how large, dry, or old your beans are, and if you have pre-soaked them, from anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and a half.

3 While the beans are cooking, sauté onions and peppers in olive oil until soft. Add chili sauce, chili powder, and/or chili purée, cumin, and garlic. Sauté until spices are fragrant.

4 Fish out and discard the bay leaves, stems of oregano, and sage leaves from the pot of beans. Remove, but reserve, extra cooking liquid until there is about 1/2-inch of liquid above beans.

5 Add the onion mixture and salt to the pot of beans. Cook another hour or so until thickened. Add reserved liquid if needed.

6 Add half of the orange juice, and simmer. Adjust chili heat at this point – you may or may not want to add more of your chili paste. Just before serving, add remaining orange juice, lime juice, and vinegar. Salt to taste. Garnish with chopped fresh cilantro.

Serve with corn tortillas, and/or rice, sour cream, and salsa. Serves 8.

Wine And Women – Recipe

For Trouble? The twilight sky was redolent with

the scent of lavender and roses. Candles surrounded the patio, lights flickering against a cotton candy twilight sky. Wine, food, soft music. What better setting for a romantic evening with your..…gal friends?

Last Friday a hundred plus women converged on the beautiful David Girard Vineyards for Girls’ Night out. We noshed on appetizers and sipped gallons of fine wine. I inhaled the country air as well as my first glass of Chardonnay (it had been a tough day.) Vendors catering to women were situated on a piazza overlooking the winery’s terraced fields of lush grapevines.

Romantic or not, I can’t think of a better way to spend a Friday night. Who else but a girl friend would assure me that I don’t need Botox or any of the other wrinkle removing procedures touted by a local spa. The fact that my friend can’t see squat didn’t stop me from believing her.

We thumbed through the novels offered by a local romance author and sighed in unison. Romance novels are great for the young who still believe a handsome hunk will come to their rescue. These days if I need to be rescued, I call a girlfriend.

And if I need a handsome hunk, I’ll call one of the cute young men who were giving chair massages. Within minutes I was relaxed and as limp as the noodles I always manage to overcook.

Our group of six wandered over to a table offering scented lotions, potions, and useful modern appliances. These were not your mother’s appliances. The explicit brochure provided conversation and giggles for the next half hour. Or maybe it was that second glass of wine.

We shared stories about our kids, grandkids and husbands, assuring each other that we are the perfect mother, grandmother and wife. The memory of a romantic evening may last for a few days. The memories we share with our gal friends will last a lifetime.

Jack London State Historic Park is a memorial to writer and adventurer Jack London, who made his home at the site from 1905 until his death in 1916. The park was once part of the famous writer’s Beauty Ranch. The park contains the cottage residence where he wrote books, short stories, articles and letters while he oversaw various agricultural enterprises. After London’s death, his wife, Charmian, continued to live in the cottage until her death in 1955. It was her wish that the ranch be preserved in memory of Jack London and his work. Facilities and Activities There is a museum in “The House of Happy Walls,” which Mrs. London built in a redwood grove. A ¾ mile walk takes visitors to a dam, lake, and bathhouse built by London. Other hikes lead up through fir and oak woodlands to views of the Valley of the Moon. Another trail leads to Jack London’s grave and to “Wolf House,” London’s dream house, which was destroyed by fire in 1913. Dogs are not allowed on backcountry trails. Dogs are allowed on a leash in the Historic Area only. Dogs are not permitted beyond the silos or inside the museum. Bicycling and horseback riding are permitted on some trails. A summer horseback riding concession is available in the park. Reservations for horseback rides can be made through Triple Creek Horse Outfit by calling (707) 887-8700. Camping is available at nearby Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. Location/Directions The historic park is at 2400 London Ranch Road in Glen Ellen, about 20 minutes north of Sonoma. The park’s upper parking lot provides access to a picnic area, London’s cottage, stables, stone barns, silos and “pig palace.” Seasons/Climate/Recommended clothing The weather can be changeable; layered clothing is recommended.

A life-long Vallejo resident, in early 2005, Michelle found herself in a position she could never have imagined. She was evicted from the apartment she shared with her husband and 5 year old son, Noah. Her marriage had collapsed, and she and her young son were forced to move in with her parents.

While the situation was not ideal, everyone made the most of it and for Noah. Michelle, who was employed at an Adult Vocational School as a teacher, had eventually developed the resources to move out on her own. However, on July 28, 2005, a grease fire broke out in her parent’s kitchen. Michelle was covered with 2nd and 3rd degree burns. 15% of her body was burned, and her right heel had to be rebuilt with skin grafts. The ordeal left her unable to walk, and shortly thereafter, she learned she was pregnant again.

On February 11, 2006 Michelle gave birth to a premature son, Kai’Lee and lost her job in the process. She continued to live with her parents. She became depressed, and addicted to meth and marijuana.

In July of 2007, she decided it was time to be independent and drug-free. She and her boys moved to Sacramento to be away from the triggers in her life. She sub-let an apartment, but it turned out that the person from whom she sub-let did not have the right to sub-lease so Michelle was soon forced to vacate their home. Michelle was adamant not to return to Vallejo. In September 2007, Michelle found her way to St. John’s Shelter where she began to rebuild her

life. With the support and encouragement of St. John’s, she was able to find her way into housing and college and begin a life of self sufficiency.

Michelle is now living on her own with her two sons and fiancé. She is a full-time student at Sac City College, majoring in Community Studies and hoping to one day become a counselor at St. John’s. Presently she is an Intern in the Career Center and has volunteered almost as many hours as she spent residing at St. John’s! With hard work and perseverance, at St. John’s, Michelle learned to look forward not back.

About St. John’s Shelter Program for Women and Children...

St. John’s (www.stjohnsshelter.org) is the only Shelter Program in Sacramento County focused exclusively on homeless women with children. The families we serve are homeless... they are not helpless. St. John’s is designed to support these families in advancing from a point of crisis towards a position of self-sufficiency. Our goal is that every family returns to our community as productive and empowered contributors, versus a continued drain on the community’s increasingly scarce resources.

The number of homeless women with children in Sacramento County is rising at an alarming rate. At St. John’s, we are consistently housing 12% more than our 100 available beds. What’s even more alarming:

Ø in 2007, we turned away an average of 25 women and children each day

Ø in 2008, we turned away an average of 80 women and children each dayØ in 2009, we are turning away over 350 women and children each day… a staggering 200+% jump St. John’s needs your help to assist these families in getting back on their feet. We are in need of household items to furnish the homes of our graduates; we are in need of volunteers to help in the kitchen, in the after school program and in the donation center; and we are in need of funding. If

you are able to assist us, please contact Twyla Teitzel at [email protected] or at 916-453-1482. This article was generously underwritten by AT&T, a sponsor of St. John’s and many other deserving organizations in the Sacramento community. (AT&T logo)

Scientists at the FLASH free-electron, high intensity laser facility in Hamburg, Germany, have created a completely new state of matter, transforming aluminum into something “that nobody has seen before,” an exotic material which is transparent to ultraviolet radiation. According to Professor

Justin Wark—from the Oxford University’s Department of Physics—the discovery is “almost as surprising as finding that you can turn lead into gold with light!” They achieved this alchemical miracle by knocking down a “core electron from every aluminium atom,” but without disrupting the metal structure with

the laser bombing. Wark says that this will give them insight into the creation of miniature stars with high-power laser implosions, “which may one day allow the power of nuclear fusion to be harnessed here on Earth.”

In 1969, Emerald Bay was designated a National Natural Landmark for its brilliant panorama of mountain-building processes and glacier carved granite. The natural beauty, geology and history of this unique island make it one of the highlights of any visit to the Lake Tahoe area. The park features Vikingsholm, one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the western hemisphere. The “Tea House” on Fannette Island, the only island to be found in all of Lake Tahoe. Emerald Bay was designated an underwater state park in 1994. It is the resting place for many boats, launches and barges used in the lake before the turn of the century, during the heyday of Emerald Bay Resort and used in the construction of Vikingsholm. Location/Directions The park is located 22 miles south of Tahoe City. Vikingsholm can be reached by parking in the Harvey West parking lot by Highway 89 at Emerald Bay.
