The popularity of the Mission Cemetery is reaching beyond the North County and broadening to South San Diego, Orange County, and even other states. We are thrilled when we get a call from someone in Florida wanted to purchase their final resting place right here!

We are so proud of the beauty and serenity of the Mission San Luis Cemetery. People often tell us: “It is so calming, so peaceful and so well kept up.” Recently the cemetery added new fountains, statuary, a chapel, and shade trees further enhancing the beauty and serenity of this sacred space. Relatives visiting loved ones often stop in the office and say, “Wow! It is so improved! So beautiful!”

For information about cemetery property and services please call 760.231.8445, ext. 133 or 139.

The Assumption of Mary - Aug. 15th

The Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary is NOT a holy day of obligation this year. For this reason, we will not provide the usual schedule for a solemnity.

This year Sunday is the LORD’S DAY and we celebrate the Paschal Mystery. For this reason the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary is

“dispensed” - meaning the “obligation” is removed (cannon 1246.2 of the Code of Canon Law - www.usccb.org).

the St. Francis Hall. All are invited!

Quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament (Eucharistic Adoration) is held on the First Friday of every month. 8-10am in the Parish Chapel and 7-9pm in the Historic Church. Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:45pm.

Secular Franciscans Meeting: The Fraternity generally meets on the first Sunday of the month. If you are like the many people who have been inspired by the Christian vitality of Pope Francis, we invite you to contact our Formation Director, Sandy Baden, at 760.305.8984.

Contemplative Prayer. A prayer of the heart resting in God. All welcome! No charge. Meetings held every Wednesday at 2pm and every Friday at 10am. Check in at the Retreat Center Office. For more information contact Pat Julian: [email protected] or call 760.757.3659, ext.123.

Women’s Scripture Study. Resuming Sept. 22nd, 6:30-8pm on 2nd and 4th Tuesday every month in the Serra Room, Retreat Center. All women are welcome; no charge. You are invited to join our parish women’s group. We study the stories of women in the Old and New Testament. The evening includes prayer, song, Scripture stories, and a lively discussion about what women in the Bible have to teach us about our gifts, our feelings and our faith in God. Gradually we realize these are our stories, they are all about personal relationships, families and community. BRING YOUR BIBLE. Contact Mary Dorso [email protected] or Pat Julian [email protected] with any questions.

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY - DOMINGO CATEQUÉTICO

This year Catechetical Sunday will focus on the theme "Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person." Catechists will be called forth (10am, Sept. 20) to be commissioned for their ministry.

Sept. 30-Nov. 4. 9:15-11:45am. Matthew, Mark, Luke: An Introduction to the Synoptic Gospels with Fr. Michael Guinan, OFM. These are called the Synoptic Gospels because, if you line them up together you can see they are interconnected. This relationship is known as the “synoptic problem” and will be

discussed early in the course. Each Gospel presents a slightly different picture of who Jesus is and of who, we as disciples, are called to be. Since the gospel for the Sunday lectionary for 2016 is Luke, we will focus a bit more on this gospel, to prepare us to appreciate it more fully. Fee: $60 for 6 sessions; $20 per session. Call (760)757-3659 for info.

This course can be transferred for credit toward the Certificate from the San Diego Diocesan Institute; it can also meet renewal credit hours (15) for catechists and teachers.

Sept. 8 - 29: Why do Catholics Genuflect? With Br. Kevin Dismas Moshier, fsp. This class is like clicking on your favorite browser for answers to all the questions about why Catholics do what they do and believe what they believe. “Cradle Catholics”, practicing Catholics and the curious are welcome

to get into the conversation. 7-8:30pm. Fee: $40pp for all 4 sessions. Call 760.757.3659 for info.

There are two guarantees if you attend a Sunday Mass and Father David is the presiding priest: At the beginning of Mass he will say, “Good morning, good people”; and at the end he will call forth the Ministers for the Sick and Homebound to get the Eucharist they will be delivering.

Dorothy and Walt Arney have a significant portion of those “good people” under their wings as the coordinators for the parish ministry that delivers those precious portions of the “body of Christ” to those who aren’t so fortunate to attend weekly Mass.

“We have about 50 volunteers and we serve around 200-250 parishioners a week,” Dorothy explained. She and Walt sort of “tag-team” the operation coordinating who is going where and when.

They also serve patients at Tri-City Hospital. “Walt tracks the volunteers to make sure everyone on the list is visited and I do the hospital part of it,” Dorothy explained of the volunteer task they have performed for the past five years. They’ve been parishioners at the Mission “off and on since 1970 … mostly on,” she added with a laugh.

Bringing the Eucharist to the sick and home-bound is only part of the ministry. “We spend some time talking to them, reading that week’s Gospel, just listening,” Dorothy explained.

Want to be a part of this integral ministry, one of the “really Good People?” Call Dorothy or Walt Arney at 760.415.5364 for more information.

SICK AND HOMEBOUND MINISTRY

SEPTEMBER IS STEWARDSHIP MONTH AT MSLRP! Stewardship is not a buzzword or round-about way of asking for more money. Stewardship is a way of life, holding the promise for far-reaching renewal within our parish family. In the coming months, you'll be invited to grow in your understanding of stewardship.

We Are Called to Share, each one in proportion to their ability. In the coming weeks you will be encouraged to think and pray about the ways God has blessed your life. You will be invited to consider how your life is enriched by our parish community.

And you will be called to consider how you can make a difference for others through your support of Mission San Luis Rey Parish. Quality liturgies, outstanding religious education programs, and support during the tough times – illness and death, all cost money. Your parish struggles to make ends meet each month. When praying about your stewardship response this year, be aware that your parish needs greater support from and the financial involvement of every parishioner.

Please be on the lookout for more information about the Stewardship campaign in September’s bulletins.

This is not news: everyone knows Catholic school students have a lower dropout rate (3.4 percent) than both public (14.4 percent) and other private schools (11.9 percent).

"Ninety-nine percent of Catholic high school students graduate, and ninety-seven percent go on to some form of post-secondary education. Catholic school students continue to score well on standardized tests (such as the National Assessment of Educational Progress) in subjects such as reading, mathematics, social studies, and science, often surpassing standards established by federal and/or state agencies…Catholic school students performed better than other students on the three basic objectives of civic education-the capacity for civic engagement (e.g., voluntary community service), political knowledge (e.g., learning and using civic skills), and political tolerance (e.g., respect for opinions different from their own)."

-from Renewing Our Commitment to Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools in the Third Millennium, 2005.

Here's what is news. Catholics who attended Catholic schools are more likely to practice their faith, including the reception of the sacraments. Receiving the Eucharist, being devoted to Mary, living a life consistent with Church teachings and helping those in need are hallmarks of Catholic education. Students continuing their education from Catholic kindergarten through high school are also more likely to pursue religious vocations.

Raising adults who actively practice their faith, receive the sacraments help those in need, consider a vocation....aren't these wonderful reasons to consider sending your son or daughter to Catholic School? We Believe Catholic education helps students and families live their faith, embrace the Franciscan ideals of service, prayer and compassion for all life, celebrate community, and inspires our students to achieve their full potential as children of God.

The Mission San Luis Rey Parish School, Old Mission Montessori, provides an academic program using the Montessori approach to education. The children are engaged in hands-on experiences that facilitate comprehension and understanding throughout the process of learning, building a solid foundation. It is a program where faith and education, education and faith are not only combined, but constant.

Come and experience the benefits of a faith-centered education! Our parish school,

Old Mission Montessori, is enrolling now for the 2015-2016 school year.
