Pet Tails

The Bird Man of Gold River

Gold River resident Majid Foroutan, nicknamed MJ, has a favorite hobby…breeding and flying Persian Pigeons…a lot of them. MJ has loved and cared for these beautiful birds since he was about 10 years old in Persia. The life expectancy of these pigeons is about 18 years. MJ has one special pigeon he has named “Stormy”…born on a stormy day. A few birds at a time are let out to fly for a couple of hours a day when the Hawks are not around. The pigeons are trained to MJ’s whistles to come back when he calls them. Pigeon keeping and flying in Persia has been a way of life for many centuries; this old tradition is still enjoyed by all walks of life. After Persia and then Chicago for 30 years, MJ came to Gold River where he and his wife opened a Persian convenient store. TAK Food Market is located at corner of Fair Oaks Blvd. and San Juan Ave. Mrs. Foroutan is an outstanding Persian cook. Their food represents their rich, ancient and unique culture. Try their Chicago Hot Dog…you will go back for more.

Life Lessons in Little League

It always amazes me how many times you watch something unfold in your children’s lives that you think to yourself, “this will be a good, teachable moment for them”. This especially holds true when they play sports of any kind. Whether it’s an umpire’s missed call or an opponent’s/parent’s supposed bad behavior, we tend to see growth opportunities for them in how they handle it at the time or deal with it afterwards.

Our Little League team compiled a 14-2 record, finished in 1st place and steamrolled into the Area 3 Tournament of Champions tournament with confidence of a long run into the District 5 tournament. Strong pitching, strong defense and strong offense, a good recipe for success. Our first game, we stormed out to a 5-0 first inning lead and started making plans for our next game. Then something strange happened: our little 8-11 year-olds started playing like 8-11 year-olds. Throwing the ball all over the field, pitches over the catchers head and unable to put the bat on the ball. Our opponents came back for a 9-5 victory and our tournament run ended as quickly as it started. The kids, some in tears, hung their heads and the coaches wondered amongst ourselves “what went wrong?” We gave the kids their post-game pep talk, told them how proud we were of the season they had and told them to keep their chins up.

As I tucked my boy in bed that night, I told him again how proud I was of the season he had and asked him if he was OK and he told me “why wouldn’t I be, tomorrow is the last day of school”!! Maybe I can learn to forget things as quickly as him……thanks for the teachable moment, son!!

A Sharp Adventure

A knife with a great edge is always a pleasure. The newest addition to my overstuffed drawer is a Victorinox paring knife – made in Switzerland via Port Townsend, Washington. I learned about this great little tool from a food demonstration at the Farmer’s Market in this seaside town. We arrived aboard our boat named the About Time. Think you can figure out why the name. Walking up from the docks I was lured by the sound of Marimbas. OH GOODY, I’m in hog heaven. Tents where set up selling the local produce and products of the area. The band was made up of 6 marimbas and a bongo. A great sound on a sunny day. After canvassing all the opportunities started with a Cape Claere salmon taco. Salmon from this area is evidently sought after – my first experience. I did a bit more walking around and found a cheese bread stick freshly baked that morning. Around the market another time and tried locally made lean Bavarian Bratwurst with sauerkraut and onions. This was accompanied with a hometown brewed Sarsaparilla. My preference is the traditional Bratwurst with fat. Polished this all off with cranberry shortbread cookies that were sooo yummy. Since we are headed to Canada couldn’t pick up too much fresh produce, but found some real nice greens all packaged. The food demonstration was all about radishes including a radish butter and sauté radishes. The knife was the best part. It cut tomatoes, bread and this chef would not be without it. I was informed that fishermen in the area use it all season. At the local kitchen store the knife was six dollars. Seemed like a great buy to me. Just have to find it in my drawer.

Act Right

Your column is very interesting. Thank you. What is your advice regarding the best way an actor should handle (mentally, emotionally) not getting mentioned in a critic’s play review. In my experience with other actors, it has happened three times. Once involved a fairly major role, and the actress was very upset, and the other two were smaller roles that the actor felt deserved a mention. I’ve heard the story that sometimes a review is longer and is cut to make room for other articles or advertising, but this doesn’t make an actor feel any better. Thank you in advance for any advice you can give. First of all, thanks for your kind comment. Since usually about all we get for doing a play is our name in a review, it really stings when we don’t get a mention. It’s true that sometimes reviews get cut for lack of space - not that knowing that makes us feel any better - but that’s just the way it is. The only reason to act is for the joy of doing it. If you expect fair play, if you expect to get what you deserve, if you expect to get the role because you are the most talented, if you expect a great review because you did a great job, then be prepared for a lot of disappointment and frustration. It’s even worse in movies. You’ve finally been cast, done a good job on the role, and then find out you’ve been cut! Some of my best work is in the garbage can at some studio; not because it wasn’t good, but because the film was too long, or there was a technical problem, or any of a dozen other reasons over which I have no control. It’s just the way it is. The only choice I have, the only control I have, is how I deal with it. I can focus on being angry, frustrated, or hurt by things over which I have no control, or I can focus on why I really am an actor . . . the joy of acting. I always tell my students “If there’s anything else you can do and be happy, do that instead.” But if you have that hole in your soul that only acting can fill, then go for it! Do it for the joy of doing it. My real job as an actor isn’t to impress the audience or reviewers, but to affect the others on stage or in front of the camera with me. My task is not to reach out to the audience, but to create such a reality as my character on stage or on the screen that I suck the audience into my world. If I do that I will touch the lives of the audience. For us to have that joy in our work, that has to be enough, and guess what . . . we’ll probably get some great revues along the way! Thanks again for your visit; good luck, God Bless, and “Break a leg!”

Republican Legislators Get Second Chance

The approval by voters in the 2008 election of Proposition 25 requires the California State Legislature adopt a balanced budget by June 15 of each year, or face no pay until one is passed and approved by the Governor. Also approved that year was Proposition 26, which changed California law from requiring a two-thirds vote for approval of a state budget to a simple majority.

To meet its new mandate, the legislature’s dominant party, the Democrats, crafted a budget that met the very basic requirement of passing a balanced budget by the June 15 deadline to ensure their pay. As expected by many, Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed the bills, keeping his campaign promise not to support a budget that includes gimmicks and kicks the problem down the road. His veto action posed and interesting question: Should the Legislature still receive a salary?

California State Controller John Chiang has decided to withhold the pay of Legislators based on the language within Proposition 25 and the state Constitution. In addition to withholding their pay, Legislators will not get paid retroactively, which may create an additional incentive for the Legislature to pass a balanced budget on a more timely basis as compared to past years. This adds up to about $400 per day in salary and per diem for each legislator.

What the Democrats tried was a very poor ploy to overcome their shortcomings of how a budget works, especially after excluding Republicans, raising taxes, borrowing from the future, and making symbolic program cuts. Many referenced the so called balanced budget as “stated income,” a loan strategy that failed the housing market.

The Governor’s veto and Chiang’s no-pay decision has allowed Republicans to suddenly be a significant player in the budget mix. Now it is up to the minority leadership to step up and become champions.

Cultivating ProsperitySurviving the most challenging economic times America has faced since the

Great Depression brought many of us face-to-face with a quality of ingenuity and humility we forgot we possessed and we learned a little about the meaning of prosperity. New “Victory” gardens remind us that prosperity is not just about money, it is about eating well. , Repairing what is broken instead of buying it new, reminds us that prosperity is the security that comes from knowing how to look deeply into things, to understand how they work and; how to fix them, not just in business, but in life... Taking the train instead of the car reminds us that prosperity is about having time to think and to appreciate the variety that lives in the cracks all around us. It also caused me to realize that I need more time for introspection.

I am taking a few months off from writing Home Based Entrepreneur. I encourage you to keep looking deeper, keep growing, and continue to prosper.. Although I will not be answering business questions during this time, if you want to drop a note, I will read it.

I need time to reflect on themes different from how we grow our businesses. Deeper questions like what motivates us to fear while living in an age of incredible opportunity? By what mechanism do we stop ourselves from seeing the gold inside ourselves?

Today, we can give a friend a warm-from-the sun tomato picked from our own garden, and hold an international business in the palm of our hand. We can give care and comfort two thousand miles away with a tiny camera and a computer. These inventions of yesterday came from humble hearts, inquisitive-well-trained minds, a willingness to work, and a consciousness that prosperity is what happens when you give your best unconditionally.

Home Based Entrepreneur is for you. You can reach La Ronda Bowen at: [email protected].

Anger and the Law

Some clients arrive in my office with considerable anger about the events which led them there. As in all other areas of life, anger clouds judgment and usually leads to ill considered decisions. An angry client often believes that his or her anger counts for some additional weight on the scales of justice. It doesn’t. However, getting the client past the anger is often difficult. But it is necessary. Ask a professional boxer what his biggest challenge is in the ring, and most will tell you anger control. It causes wild swings and useless expenditure of energy in a fight. The same is true for legal problems.

Within the Mind of a Millionaire

Can You Go The Distance?Definition: 1. To hold up under (hardship, pain, etc.) 2.

To tolerate 3. To continue, last 4. To bare pain, etc. without flinching, persist, survive, outlast.

In other words, hold on, hang on and keep on! It has been said, “life is a marathon, not a sprint.” To get to the finish line

(or to reach your goals) your efforts have to out last the trip and be strong enough to overcome the hurdles along the way.

Looking back in time, I cannot remember anything I have ever done that was an over night success or was ever easier than I expected, always harder. Yet so many people make a run at something and if they do not see signs of success in a short period of time they give up. We live in an instant gratification society. We want it now and if it doesn’t happen right away we give up.

Ray Crock, founder of McDonalds went 7 years without any income. How about Kentucky Fried Chicken’s, Colonel Sanders, who prospected over 1000 investors before he had all the investment capitol he needed. And then there’s Howard Schultz who left his job in New York City to move to the west coast taking a severe reduction in pay to pursue his dream in the coffee business. You know it as Starbucks. He was willing to sweep the floors at a coffee roasting company, anything to get his foot in the door. The success of these companies and their founders is evident. They are all worldwide companies with books written of their struggles and their success. But what did they need first, an idea, then a dream, then endurance to make it happen. These founders knew they had to pay the price for the promise of a brighter more successful future. Continued to next month

Moments of Happiness

I was sitting on the sofa one Saturday eating my favorite lunch (salad), and watching television. Then I got a phone call interrupting my lunch, ugh. I looked at my cell phone to see if I knew who was calling me at lunch time. It had an area code from where I grew up (Portland, Oregon). So I thought who would be calling at noon time on Saturday? I still have relatives in that area, although I know their phone numbers and it wasn’t anyone’s I recognized. I clicked the mute button on the remote to the TV so I could hear the caller. I answered with hello. The person on the other end said my name then said his (Gerry Pruyn). I don’t think he cares if I mention his name. My mind switched gears. I leaned back and said, “Well I’ll be.” I hadn’t talked to him for a couple of decades. Gerry and I played a sport together in college, then we became roommates. We had a lot of fun in college. His name is pronounced the same as mine, just spelled different. We had become friends on facebook, but never really communicated. Hearing a voice is different than texting. I put my salad aside and we spent over an hour catching up on his life and he on my life. It was a great moments of happiness. You don’t always know when happiness will come into your life, remember it. It’s my turn to call another friend from the past and have some more joys of catching up. You can do it too. Don’t wait, do it now. It’s a great gift, and the clock keeps ticking your time away.

Investment Real Estate Group

Real Estate Investing Is A Team Sport

You may be the owner of the team, or great at pitching – but you still need 8 more players to have a chance! Partners aside, there are more people involved in a Real Estate transaction than a contractor, money and investor knowledge as we’ve discussed before.

Here are a few key players you’ll want to get in contact with; Title agent, Pest Inspector, Real Estate Agent, and Mortgage Broker. These players are almost always all involved in some way with a good deal of Real Estate transactions – and if you have them on your team, things are far more likely to go smoothly - and they help give you an edge during purchase and resale. With these players, you can recommend a lender to your new buyer, an agent if they need one, your pest inspector will let you know of any red flags before you complete your purchases and your title agent is invaluable for catching and solving problems during escrow.

Where do I find good players to recruit? Your local Real Estate Investment Club is a great place to ask those types of questions. Investors who buy and sell property regularly have all of these players and more, and in many cases are more than happy to share them!

his talk show on Channel 48 out of San Jose, Dana Nunnery from Prospect Communications and Michelle Ponto from News10. Along with the residents of the living center, the judges were kept entertained throughout the night with music, dancing and trivia.

But what they really wanted to know was just what the chefs were preparing for them. And what exactly they were going to do with the popcorn.

“I had a dream last night that they served something with lobster and peanut butter,” said Dana Nunnery.

The dishes the chefs came up with were as creative as Nunnery’s dream. Duey and his partner Chef John Holloway prepared lobster risotto with feta cheese, butter poached lobster on a bed of lemongrass braised fennel and a roasted red pepper salad with spicy popcorn croutons.

Chef Susan Stangroom and Chef Katie Johnson went with a Thai inspired dish that included Thai noodles in a lobster/lemongrass broth, lobster medallions with a white wine cream sauce, and a side of chocolate popcorn.

Both dishes were delicious and the judging was difficult. In the end Stangroom’s team won by just a couple of points.

But who wins the food challenge doesn’t matter to the residents at Atria. For them, it’s the entertainment value and the excitement of the event that really matter. Trowbridge says she can’t wait to see what the chefs are going to make each time.

“It’s just such fun and we just laugh the whole time,” said Trowbridge. “That’s why I was first in line.”

“And that’s why I was second in line,” said Vivian Philippant, her friend and fellow resident.

Singapore’s Vibrant Growing Startup Community

During our trip to Singapore last month, I had the great opportunity to sit down with two guys leading the startup charge in that beautiful city-state. In the morning, I had a great chat over tea with James Chan, Investment Manager at Neotony Labs – and later in the afternoon, my wife, our friend, and I were gracioulsy hosted by Jitsiong Koh, Founder of Optimatic, at their Garag3 startup incubator.

Both guys are actively involved in what is quickly becoming one of the hot startup scenes in Asia. Singapore is nestled south of Malaysia in Southeast Asia, about a 3.5 hour flight due mostly south from Hong Kong. The city is very beautiful, extremely safe, and you’ll never have to worry about wearing a jacket (a huge plus for an avid shorts fan like me).

I was extremely impressed with the efforts these guys and their colleagues are making, in coordination with the Singapore government, to promote startups and innovation locally. It’s really a far cry from the US, which at this point seems to be partially succeeding in spite of itself. Want to do business in California? Good luck!

Singapore seems destined for startup success if it continues to embrace its current business friendly attitudes. There are two things historically that appear to be the magic formula for economic success.

First and foremost is a stable currency. Unlike here in the US, where the Federal Reserve has literally created trillions of dollars out of thin air, Singapore has actually allowed its currency to strengthen in an effort to fend off inflation.

The second half of the economic success equation is a business friendly environment in which to operate. This was the secret to the United States’ economic success for the first 100+ years of its existence – relatively unfettered, good old fashioned laissez faire capitalism.

To stay up to date on the latest startup news in Singapore and Asia, I’d highly recommend adding their excellent e27 tech blog to your daily reading list.

Dear Betty,You’ve been writing about the differences between men and

women’s brains. What I want to know is why do women start a conversation as they are walking out of the room and expect me to hear them? My ex-wife did this and now my new wife is doing the same. It’s so annoying. All I hear is mumbling. What can I do to have her change her ways? Annoyed in Miners Village

Dear Annoyed,I hear you! Yes, what is it about women that have them start a conversation

while walking out of the room? (I confess that I catch myself doing the same thing.) Women’s brains are wired to multi-task. As a woman heads to the laundry room to put the clothes in the dryer, she may think about something else that needs to get done. Take out the garbage, for example! Next thing you know, she is talking to you from another room.

I teach my clients the Walk, THEN Talk Rule. Here’s how it works. If you start the conversation, you have to get up and go to your wife. Get her attention and then, start talking. However, if she initiates the conversation, she has to come to you, get your attention and then begin to talk. If either one of you break this rule, the other person gets to be playful and yell out, “Walk. THEN, talk!” The couples that use this rule report more tolerance and stronger connections with one another. Heck, you might even make eye contact. That enhances positive communication even more. You both get to have some fun while changing an annoying behavior. By the way, I would also recommend that you have your hearing tested since you are struggling to hear her at a distance.

Start-up Incubator Continues to Grow

Three months after being formed the American River Game & Tech Incubator (AR-GATI) continues to grow and be a catalyst for local Internet game and social media companies to learn more about one an other, and spend more time networking together.

There have been meetings so far held in Folsom, Roseville and downtown Sacramento.

The focus of this GATI (Game & Tech Incubator) is to serve as means of getting all the currently disparate Internet-based game/social media companies in the Sacramento region aware of one another, and help foster the development and growth of new ones. So far there have been over 50 companies and individuals wanting to be involved with the future of the incubator.

In the first stage of development the primary four activities of the incubator include:

1. An opportunity to physically get together once a month on a Friday in the Sacramento area over a “free lunch”

2. A quarterly evening gathering to learn more about one another3. Email list among the members4. Facebook groupAnother aspect of the formation of

this entity is to introduce related start-ups to various experienced service providers whose expertise might be beneficial for the start-ups.

If you are interested in learning more about AR-GATI send a message at

Corporate Etiquette 101: Email

Email is such an integrated part of our lives that we seldom consider if there is in fact, a correct or incorrect way to structure it. We need only to observe the headlines to know that email is of such importance that, if not used properly it can cost someone their employment status.

Keeping your workplace communication on a business level is always the “safe zone” that you can feel comfortable operating within.

I) Keep it Professional: Keep your email devoid of personal feelings, emotions and bias. Just remember that company email is NOT our personal email, it is the company’s. Therefore, when using company email, communicate as though you were the voice of the company. Keeping your email communication professional will always yield successful results.

II) Keep it Positive: You cannot control the amount of negativity that presents itself during the course of a work day. However, you can control and change the kind of effect it has on you. This is also true of emails that are of a negative connotation. In this regard, the best way to counter negativity is to use positivity in all your workplace communication.

III) Keep it Productive: For certain email inquiries, some initial research must be done to acquire the required information. These kinds of emails tend to take up more time. Learn effective time management strategies and keep your emails informative, while to-the-point. In doing so, you’ll find that you’ve accomplished more throughout your work day.

IV: Keep it Practical: Avoid sending emails that lack clarity of thought or are so laden with techno jargon that no one can make sense of them. Rather, keep your email concise, to the point and well-structured. This will take you further in the eyes of the reader than the superior sounding approach, ever could.

V: Keep it “Proofed”: Perhaps, the biggest detriment to an otherwise, well constructed email is bad grammar. Many people downplay the importance of grammar, yet more and more grammar will make or break your email. The genera l rule is that hiring managers will discard a job-seeker’s resume if it has a single grammar mistake. Perhaps this same mindset could be adopted for company email. Keeping your emails proofed will help you pass Corporate Etiquette, 101 with ease.

Prism of Living By Helen Dang

The International Festival

The joy of living can come from enjoying very simple things. The abundant flowers this spring or sharing laughter with people, or dancing without inhibition like a kid. That’s how I felt when I joined Sari in her Indonesian folk dance, mirroring this skillful dancer’s steps and moves, feeling so drawn into a culture I came to know for the first time. Inspired like me and joining us in the dance were my friend Marissa, and a big group of kids, men and women who attended the International Festival in Roseville this morning, June 18th. We were so charmed by Sari’s beautiful traditional outfit and her elaborate hairdo that looked like a bright half-moon cascading into a cobra-shaped of flower arrangement.

The succession of other performances at the Festival presented a joyful sharing of rich cultures and heritages in both traditional and modern presentation. I was pleased with the fashion show of Viet Chamber of Commerce, not only because of their elegant dresses but because of their new efforts to contribute their presence to the cultural tapestry of Sacramento which is a right direction to me. Sharing brings people closer together. It was so much fun clapping with the Spanish dancers and joining the exciting Zumba practice. I love that feeling of togetherness.

I’m always interested in knowing other cultures and learning how people enjoy their lives. As different as we all seem to be, people essentially pursue what makes them happy. While the goal is universal, it’s the journey to get there and the many activities to achieve it that make our world so rich with layers of colors and texture. Next time there is an International Festival or some event of that nature coming along, make sure to attend. You’ll have another insight into that richness of the Sacramento world.

Using a potato masher, mash all berries, just a couple of times to release some juices, and break up big chunks. Using a serrated knife, slice pound cake into 1/4 inch slices. Strawberry-Champagne Scallops Seared scallops are served with an elegant champagne sauce and garnished with fresh strawberries.Ingredients: 1 shallot, finely minced1 cup champagne or other sparkling wine1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon champagne vinegar, divided20 large sea scallops, preferably dry-packsalt and pepper, to taste1 tablespoon olive oil4 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled8 strawberries, hulled and sliced verticallyMethod:

Combine shallot, champagne, and 1 tablespoon champagne vinegar in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat and reduce to about 2 tablespoons of liquid, 10-15 minutes. While the liquids reduce, heat a large saute pan over high heat. Pat scallops dry with paper towels, and season lightly with salt and pepper on both sides. Add oil to the hot pan, then add scallops. Cook, without moving, until browned on one side, 2-3 minutes. Flip each scallop, then reduce heat to medium. Cook 2 minutes further on the second side, until just opaque in the center. Divide between 4 dinner plates. Add butter, one pat at a time, to the reduced champagne, whisking constantly until thick and creamy. Season with salt and pepper, then drizzle over and between the scallops. Toss strawberries with remaining teaspoon of champagne vinegar, season with salt and pepper, then arrange over scallops. We’ve all been brought up with the idea that every spring we should clean our homes from end to end and freshen up for our health. This might have come from the idea that in spring, things are fresh and new and cleaning the home will renew your feelings about yourself.

1. Improve Your Health Without Diets Or Pills

Pollens, mold, and mildew spores are dumped into the air at incred-ible intensity. Pollutants from car exhaust, burning fields, and cigarette smoke were also dumped into the stagnant air. All this gunk drifted into your home and when you closed the house up, where do you suppose it’s been ever since? It got trapped in your home. Thanks to today’s air tight, energy efficient homes, your family and guests have been breathing that recycled air-garbage. 2. Your Home Is Your Personal Breeding Ground For Invisible Crit-ters And Varmints In addition to the air-garbage from outside, you have uncontrolled vermin inside. Too tiny to see, dust mites live in your carpet, upholstery, bedding and drapes by the millions. By now their dead bodies and dung are in your house by the billions. They live off your dead skin as do billions of bacteria in your home, including those that cause staph and strep infections. Ever wonder why so many people get strep as soon as it cools off outside? Now you know. Plus, fleas brought into your house last summer don’t die off like they do outside when it freezes. Bacteria and germs have been breeding in the warm fibers of your carpet.

3. Does Your Bedroom Smell Like A Gerbil? Here’s Why…

Besides being Harmful to our health, all the germs, bacteria and crit-ters that live off dead skin from us and our pets, stink. They eat skin and along with other excretions, put out tainted methane gas which smells bad. 4. Heavy Soil From Outside Sifts Deep Into Your Carpet Never To Be Seen Again Until the winter rains have washed the sand soil from the roads and sidewalks, heavy soils from outside are tracked onto your carpet, wiggle down deeper than your vacuum can reach and stay there, grinding your carpet down into worthless fibers. You’ll find them in your vacuum bag.

Cleaning now, will get rid of sandy soils before they do lots of damage or get too deep.

5. Finally – Someone Who Can Remove Those Ugly Black Lines By The Walls, or Crevice of Steps I’ve had new clients call us to evaluate some embarrassing black lines where the carpet meets the wall and at the edges of steps and jagged lines under curtains. They told me no carpet cleaner could get them out and in some cases they had tried up to five different firms. But the black remained. I inspected these lines and found the cause to be an air filtration problem. With extra effort and knowledge on our part, the ugly black lines can be removed. I told the client this and they were apprehensive. I also told them if it didn’t come clean as I described, they would not have to pay us. How’s that for confidence? Yes, we cleaned the ugly black lines. Yes, our clients were happy. 6. Do-It-Yourself Folks Get What They Paid For… …Nothing The problems I have described here can’t be fixed very

well with any home remedy. Sure you can dust and do the basic cleaning just fine. But drapes, fine rugs and upholstery often cannot be safely cleaned except by a professional. Let’s face it. If those puny little cleaning systems could even come close to the effectiveness of a trained professional using a $55,000.00 steam cleaning system, no one would pay the money for them. But There’s Still One Thing You Should Know . . .
