The rare “Royal Dog of Madagascar”

Coton De Tulear

Liven up your home and get a puppy! That’s what the Root family did. Keith, Cheryl, and teenage sons Ryan and Aaron Root of Gold River are having a great time with Suri.

Suri is a ten pound, six-month old female Coton De Tulear, whom thrives on attention, loves playing with the family and races throughout the house doing puppy laps. She is a high energy, playful, loving dog that brings laughter and joy to the Root home.

The Coton is a fluffy little, white ball, and sometimes has patches of color. Most people find this adorable breed to be hypoallergenic and shedding minimal.

The Coton de Tulear is bred and raised to be strictly a companion dog. Because of their delightful personalities, small size, dark eyes, long lashes, and super charm, they are said to sometimes to actually smile. They bond easily to the humans in their life and are often known as “little clowns” due to their playful demeanor.

The Coton de Tulear is originated from Madagascar and is the “Official Dog of Madagascar.” In its country of origin, this breed has been portrayed on a postage stamp.

In 1974, Dr. Robert Jay Russell, a biologist studying Madagascar’s lemurs, sent Coton breeding stock to America. Three years later they were introduced in Europe. The dogs were enthusiastically received, and are quickly becoming on the fastest

Growing rare breeds in America and in Europe. Overall, Cotons are smart, funny, very sweet and real joy to be around. Cotons are a small

dog, with a big dog personality.

“Money is like manure; it’s not worth a thing unless it’s spread around encouraging young things to grow.”

—Thornton Wilder: Was an American playwright and novelist

Even the novice investor knows that diversifying your financial portfolio builds greater wealth faster. Makes sense. Likewise, diversifying your income will do the same — build your wealth faster. Just as farmers stagger when they plant their crops in order to achieve maximum harvest, you can achieve maximum wealth by doing the same with your income. And with a recession looming, if you don’t diversify your income, you just may find yourself ankle deep in — well, you get the picture. The Power of Passive Income is your key to multiplying your income.

Can a Car Run on Air?

Is it possible for a car to run on nothing more then simply compressed air? If you ask the scientist and researchers at MDI in France they will tell you it is true. After 10 years of research and development MDI is ready to launch to the public its mono-energy engines which operate on a totally eco-friendly basis using compressed air stored at high pressure. According to their reports these engines are used on vehicles designed for urban use, backup generators or industrial tractors. They are particularly tailored for applications where the torque has an importance and when an averagely moderate power is needed. Together with the zero pollution engines, some other versions having the same technical basis have also been created by MDI, they are known as the dual-energy engines. In the case of dual-energy engines, an energetic adjuvant (petrol, diesel, oil, alcohol or gas) is burned in an external continuous combustion chamber. These dual-energy engines have more range and the amount of toxic gases released is very low. These engines are used on vehicles designed for urban use, backup generators or industrial tractors. They are particularly tailored for applications where the torque has an importance and when an averagely moderate power is needed. MDI has developed a complete line of automobiles and transportation vehicles around this pioneering technology, and they have also developed a whole new process of production which puts the production of the vehicles closer to the markets where they will be sold. If you would like to learn more you can visit their website at www.mdi.lu/english/index.php.

Attorney’s us Triage Basis

Most experienced attorneys are busier than they want to be, and so have to allocate time between clients. Usually this is done on a “triage” basis, meaning those matters most urgent are addressed while the less urgent wait in line. However, attorneys do have a ethical obligation to respond timely to all clients despite press of business. If your matter is not being handled to your reasonable satisfaction (including returned emails and phone calls) send your attorney a letter or an email stating that while you respect the demands of his business, your matter is as important to you as any other client;s is to him or her, and your money spends as well. Like in many things, squeaky wheels are more likely to get greased.

“Be grateful for what you already have. Playfully declare what you would like to have with positive emotion, feeling as if it is already achieved. Act on the nudges and opportunities that appear.” —Joe Vitale

“Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and

uncomfortable when you try something new.” — Brian Tracy: Motivational speaker and self-help author

The average American rarely leaves his or her comfort zone. As a result, the average American household is $8000 in debt. The average American spends more than they make. The average American will not be able to retire comfortably. You don’t want to be average. And the only way to move from ordinary to extraordinary is to leave your comfort zone TODAY! Challenge your comfort zone and present millionaire habits.

Business Opportunities in the Stimulus Package

Step 1: Get readyBy: La Ronda Bowen

Q. Are there new business opportunities for me in the economic recovery funds?

R. YES, especially if you have registered your business with the California Department of General Services and the Central Contracts Register (CCR is for federal procurement). Opportunities abound as well if you are a technology contractor, are engaged in broadband installations, and if you are in battery or alternative-energy research or development. If you are a very small or micro business, you’ll need to partner or subcontract with others. First, you must put yourself in a position to be competitive...register yourself as a vendor looking for business. I recommend that you complete the easy, short application for small business registration with the CA Dept of General Services (http://www.pd.dgs.ca.gov/smbus/getcertified.htm) and that you register as a vendor with the federal government’s Central Contracts Register (CCR). See the US Small Business Administration’s page: http://www.sba.gov/ContractingOpportunities/owners/start/GC_REGISTER_BUSINESS.html or call the SBA office in Sacramento at: (916) 930-3700‎ or the SCORE office at:(916) 930-3701‎. These are essential steps to demonstrate that you are a responsible business. Micro businesses are encouraged. If you are already a registered small business, contact the appropriate department in the state (i.e., Education, if your business focuses on improving student achievement or if you sell software to training facilities), Ask for the small business procurement officer and discuss the opportunities that are forthcoming. The next two columns will continue on this subject.

Attn. Business Owners/Entrepreneurs: E-mail your questions to me at [email protected]. I respond to everyone and answer the most common questions here. Helping you grow your business to the size you desire is the reason for this column.

“What does money like? Money likes speed. That’s the secret few know about money.

Money comes to those who act fast. If you think, wonder, question, doubt, plan, meet, discuss, or in any other way drag your feet, money goes to the next person in line.”

7 Great Side Jobs for Extra Cash

Strapped for cash? Many people are in these trying times. With growing unemployment, salary cuts, and the rising cost of living, plenty of Americans are seeking additional avenues to increase cash flow. Check out these seven hot side jobs that can be done around your 9-to-5 and with skills you may already have. 1. Dog Walker. Even in a recession people don’t skimp on their furry loved ones. Therefore, being a dog walker can be an easy sell, especially for other people who need to work two jobs to make ends meet. The double bonus here is you can get great exercise while racking up extra bucks. You can also walk dogs before or after your full-time job. Dog walker median salary per hour: $16.29. 2. Handyman. No matter where the economy stands, things still break that must be fixed. When you are good at fixing things, word travels fast. It’s possible to make a small mint fixing cars, installing water heaters, and doing home electrical and plumbing jobs. Consider how much a full-time car mechanic or a plumber charges. Even if you discount your rate, the pay is still good, and customers feel like they got a deal. From painting to fence-building, there are plenty of household jobs many people can’t do or simply don’t want to. Handyman median salary per hour: $17.33. 3. Medical Transcription. Are you a fast typist with excellent grammar and a medical background? If so, medical transcription may be for you. This job often calls for at least one year’s experience in a hospital or clinical setting; some ads require transcription experience. Tools you will need for this job likely include high-speed Internet and Microsoft 2000 software. You should also be prepared to take a skills test. Medical transcriptionist median salary per hour: $13.78. 4. Wills/Medical Power of Attorney. While planning for the inevitable can be upsetting, it provides a way for attorneys to make extra side income. Lawyers can get up to speed on formulating simple wills and living trusts without too much effort. Completing these documents is something most people agree is essential but have not checked off their ‘to-do’ list. Talk to friends, church members, and neighbors to generate clients. Potential clients are likely working or have other commitments just like you. Therefore, being available outside of business hours makes meeting up more convenient for everyone involved. Attorney median salary per hour: $55.66. 5. Income Tax Preparer. Preparing income taxes is one of the most dreaded have-tos among Americans. There are plenty of people who would be glad to pass off their tax preparations to someone else if for no other reason than the fear of being audited. Donald Cheatham, owner of DC Tax Group, turned his side job into a small side business. He chose this off-hours gig because of the high demand and he enjoys accounting and the extra money. It may help your credibility if you are a certified public accountant, but this certification is not required. The median salary for an accountant per hour: $18.19; CPA median salary per hour: $26.25. 6. Teach a Hobby. Whether it is dance, tennis, golf, computer skills, or music, teaching someone how to do something you are good at and love makes working a second job less like, well ? work. You can find teacher job ads at recreational centers in your neighborhood or advertise your expertise online and in local publications. Dance instructor median salary per hour: $18.58; Music teacher median salary per hour: $21.28. 7. Babysitter. This job is convenient, especially if you have kids. After all, you can make money with them right nearby. Offer to watch your friends’ and neighbors’ kids so they can take a breather, and they will love you for it. Another option is to help people who work nights. Finding a 24-hour daycare service is difficult, to say the least. Caring for several kids on the same night can compound your earnings and get you extra cash more quickly. Babysitter median salary per hour: $9.00.

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” —Helen Keller: Author, activist and lecturer

“Your greatest asset is your earning ability. Your greatest resource is your time.” — Brian Tracy: Self-help author and international speaker

Are You aWannapreneur?

Someday…it’s the mantra of the wannapreneur…as well as their downfall.

Someday…I’ll start my own company…someday…I’d like to run my own business…someday.

Why not today? Because I don’t have time. Because I work too much. Because I haven’t learned enough about business.

Here’s a fact of life that you can take to the bank – there will never be enough time to get started, never be a lack of other things to do…basically you will never have a lack of reasons why you can’t start working towards your goal of starting a business TODAY.

What separates entrepreneurs from wannapreneurs? Action! Without action, you’re stuck. Stuck working for The Man, stuck dreaming rather than doing, just stuck.

Entrepreneurs take action – massive action. They take action early and often. It’s not always the right action, and that’s OK. In fact, it’s required. Mistakes are learning experiences, and starting a new business is a game of constant learning and adjustments.

Remember - market opportunities don’t stay open forever. You can be sure that if you have a good idea today…that your window of opportunity will surely close…someday.

So ask yourself - what can you do TODAY to take action towards your dreams? Don’t wait until tomorrow – get started taking action now. Research the market. Bounce your idea off a potential customer. What do you have to lose?

Taking action is addicting. Once you begin, you’ll begin to build momentum. Actions create results, which motivate you to take more action. So get started by taking action…today!

Summer is almost here

When we were younger, summer represented the end of school and the beginning of three months of freedom. Students eagerly awaited a time to relax and have fun with friends. The end of school used to be something to look forward to. But, as a high school student, the childish euphoria that previously accompanied the thought of summer is long gone. Instead, it represents what we have been preparing for and dreading all semester: finals. Second semester finals are perhaps one of the hardest parts of the school year. The tests given over a few days have the potential to be the deciding factor in whether a student receives and A or a B in a class. Finals can count for fifteen percent or more of a student’s grade. That’s fifteen percent riding on a test administered in two hours or less. Does this seem odd to you?

Finals are theoretically supposed to test your knowledge of the semester as whole. This shouldn’t be too bad because we were taught this information so we should remember it right? Let’s face it-- no student is actually going to remember all the material taught over a semester to the degree that they are tested on the information. This is especially true when you take into account the fact that each student has multiple classes; each teacher expecting that students retain all the knowledge taught in their class. This is impossible. There is simply too much minutia to wade through and remember. Perhaps, instead the tests could focus on main concepts instead of the finite details. The tests and high expectations lead to cramming, late nights, and high stress levels. This leads us to the question: are finals necessary? Is it fair for so much of your grade to hinge upon one test? I agree that teachers should be allowed to give an end of the year test to make sure students are paying attention. But, the tests are much too hard and count for an unnecessarily high percentage of our grades causing unnecessary and negative results.

Anne Frank: The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Be-cause only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature.

What’s O.K. ? The O.K. Program was established in 1990 at Mills Middle School in Rancho Cordova, California. The program was designed to reverse the grim statistics that young African American males were facing…namely, the high rates of incarceration and homicide. Since 1990, the O.K. Program has won many awards including several national awards. In 1992, President George Bush recognized the O.K. Program as the 945th Daily Point of Light for the Nation. In 1994, it won the Jefferson Award in recognition of outstanding public service, and in 1995 it won the National Association of Attorneys General “For the Children Award”. In the spring of 2005, the O.K. Program became a national organization. An inspirational documentary that is full of emotional testimonies from many young African American males , whose Lives were diverted from the path that leads to prison or an early grave and who went on to lead positive and productive lives. In this powerful documentary, Retired Sheriff’s Deputy, Donald Northcross (Founder of the O.K. Program) explains why he started the O.K. Program back in 1990… when he was a full time sheriff’s deputy, how the Program works, what makes it effective and how it can change an entire community. The O.K. Program became a national organization in the spring of 2005 and is now addressing the crisis of young African American males in cities throughout the country.

MySpace vs. Facebook?

Long-time MySpace users will tell you that change has been brewing for the past few weeks in the look and feel of the site. Many people have commented that MySpace appears to be trying to make it look and feel a lot like Facebook.

MySpace is adopting a similar page layout and has adopted an instant messaging feature that looks an awful lot like Facebook’s.

It is possible that for MySpace it is starting to hit the mature stage of its product lifecycle. Alexa.com web statistics indicate that its over all number of visitors has been declining quite substantially over the past three months. And its ranking in the list of the most popular websites in the world is steadily slipping.

On the other hand Facebook’s numbers have more or less been skyrocketing over the past three months. It is possible that “new kid on the block”, the website that started out basically just catering to college kids is going to take over as the dominate force in the social networking world? It certainly appears that that is what is in store between the two sites. Does that mean that everybody on MySpace is just going to pack up and leave? Well, probably not. But, if you are new to the world of social networking and are looking to pick between one of the two to invest your time, energy and effort into stabling a profile and presence, you’d probably be best served spending it with Facebook.

Marketing Tip

“Don’t take your clients for Granted!” When growing your business you may just assume that the customer you have sold to once will come back to you and buy again. You know you gave great service and maybe a great product at a good price. So it’s only reasonable that when it’s time for your customer to buy again they’ll buy from you, right? That’s all wrong. Customers that may have been satisfied at one time doing business with you are being marketed to by a whole host of competition for their purchasing dollar. That customer is busy working and thinking about their own lively hood. They don’t remember every business they’ve purchase something from. There’s a lot of noise from media and family screaming for our attention. We just don’t always remember who we did business with. Maybe we want try that other business (your competition) because they’re always exposed to us.To build and keep clients—you need to keep in touch with your customer/client and be personal about it. Use the telephone and call them for a short one minute hello. Mail them a greeting monthly. It could be a newsletter, a post card, a thank you note, a happy 4th of July card, etc. Find a non offensive way to be in front of your customer with friendly information. Share what your company is doing for clients or the community. You can mention a special you have just for clients this month. Don’t depend just on email, we don’t always open it.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn: One should never direct people towards happiness, because happiness too is an idol of the market-place. One should direct them towards mutual affection. A beast gnaw-ing at its prey can be happy too, but only human beings can feel affection for each other, and this is the highest achievement they can aspire to.

Henry David Thoreau: The most I can do for my friend is simply to be his friend. I have no wealth to bestow on him. If he knows that I am happy in loving him, he will want no other reward. Is not friendship divine in this?Carl Jung: There are as many nights as days, and the one is just as long as the other in the year’s course. Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word ‘happy’ would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness.

You may not remember the times when doctors made house calls, but you’ve seen them in movies. The doctor with his black bag, sitting by a patient’s bed, asking what ails him, providing a remedy, and leaving the house with smiles of relief from the patient’s family.

Today, people want healthcare with individualized attention, shorter waiting-room times, and less cost to recession-strapped budgets. Ray Guanill Jr., president of Med-Ready Healthcare, noticed a need. “I asked people how their healthcare needs could be better met,” he says. “Then I looked at how it originated….on house calls. Here’s a service that brings back the quality of healthcare no one gets anymore.”

For many elderly or disabled patients, house calls are a necessity. For others, they can be an affordable alternative to going to the doctor’s office. People think they cannot afford this type of service, when actually the opposite is true, says Ray. No staffed clinic means a cost savings to patients. Doctors also go to businesses and hotels to help patients.

Many companies in these financially unstable times are cutting out healthcare benefits for their employees. “We provide an affordable option to these companies before employees’ healthcare benefits are taken away completely,” says Ray.

Giving back to the community is important to Ray. “I know what it’s like to raise kids in a struggling environment,” he says. So he began the Get One, Give One Program™…for every house call made, Med-Ready Healthcare will donate one free wellness screening to a child in need. Children whose parents cannot provide healthcare get a health screening for free in their home. “I want to help others. This is personal to me,” says Ray. He may not be a doctor, but he’s making a difference, one house call at a time.

Hot Flash By Cindy Sample

Having grown up in corporate America, I was forced to put in my time on the golf course. After taking home a trophy for highest score, it was obvious I wasn’t slated to be a female Tiger Woods. No matter how adorable I looked in my pastel golf attire, it didn’t detract from the fact I couldn’t hit the ball.

What I did take home was a valuable tool. Where else can you determine the integrity of a person in one afternoon? How someone plays golf is often reflective of how they live their life. For those single women out there, forget about romantic dinners or strolls on the beach. If you want to know a man’s true colors, head to the greens.

His butt may look cute clad in khaki or even pink plaid, but do you want to spend your life with someone whose ability to add disappears once he hits the golf course?

What about his ability to cope with frustrating situations? If he wraps his Big Bertha around a tree when his ball lands in a sand trap, is he still your Mr. Right?

Does he willingly relinquish the golf cart to you? A man who is comfortable with a female driver has a lot of potential. A man who lets you make frequent pit stops is definitely a keeper.

If you ask for suggestions to improve your game and he gives you eighteen different tips, this may not

be the man you want to trim the Xmas tree with. On the other hand if his only comment is that your beauty distracted him, well then…

How about attitude? Is he a glass half full or half empty kind of guy? Does he grin remembering the great putt he made? Or gripe about the drive that landed in the woods.

Now that you have a tip sheet for mastering the game of golf, and love, don your shorts and matching shirt (golf really is more fun when you’re color coordinated). Grab a club, and a man, and try them both out for size.

Students and volunteers alike flourish in the positive, encouraging and fun atmosphere at UCP/Saddle Pals, a non-profit therapeutic horseback riding center. Volunteers are the mainstay of the program and are not only critical for the success of around 70 riders, but also to accommodate the approximate 50 individuals who are waiting to benefit from the service. Its program serves individuals four years of age and up with a broad range of cognitive and physical challenges. Therapeutic riding has been found to help improve strength, balance, coordination, fine motor control, cognitive processes, communication, social skills, and self-confidence.

An instructor plans and implements each lesson to meet the goals of individual riders. Students at Saddle Pals typically begin with three volunteers during lessons: two sidewalkers who

walk along each side of the horse to insure the rider’s safety and a leader who leads the horse. These volunteers who directly assist in the operation of lessons form the Program Crew. Volunteer skills are also utilized for the Facility and Equine Crews that care for the stable and its gentle horses.

Bacon and Cheddar Cheese Puffs - GougeresPrep Time: 30 minutes or less | Cook Time: 30 minutes - 1 hour | Serves: 12Ingredients: Buttermilk-ranch, Bacon and Cheddar Gougeres aka Cheese Puffs I wanted to make something high-end out of bacon-cheddar-ranch. So I thought - GOUGERES! also known as Cheese Puffs. Upscale snack food. Gougeres are made from pate-a-choux, they’re basically savory cream puffs. Crispy on the outside, and hollow and creamy on the inside. And boy oh boy were these good.

Ingredients: 3/4 cup buttermilk 5 TB butter 1 cup flour 3 eggs 2 strips bacon, diced 1 cup cheddar, shredded 1/2 tsp fresh thyme, minced 1 tsp fresh basil, minced 1/2 tsp buttermilk dressing base powder salt and fresh ground pepper Preheat oven to 425.

Step 1. Dice bacon very small, and cook in a small skillet until very crispy. Place on a paper towel to drain.Step 2. In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the butter in the buttermilk. When melted, dump in the flour all at once.Step 3. Stir briskly with a wooden spoon until dough comes together.Step 4. Add eggs one at a time, whisking constantly until blended. Turn off heat, and continue whisking until cohesive and a little bit of a sheen develops.Step 5. Add in bacon, herbs, cheese , dressing-base, fresh ground pepper and 1/4 tsp salt. Drop by rounded tablespoons onto a silpat-lined cookie sheet. Smooth out the edges with the back of a wet spoon, or wet fingers. Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes, or until starting to brown and puffed. Reduce heat to 350 and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from oven and turn off the heat, poke bottoms of gougeres / cheese puffs with a toothpick or chopstick to let additional steam escape, and put back in the oven (still off!) for another 15-20 minutes to dry out a tad.Step 6. Serve the gougeres / cheese puffs warm or at room temp. Keeps really well in an air-tight container for several days, simply rewarm in a 350 degree oven for a few minutes.

Apartment InvestingToday, people want to safeguard

their money, getting out of the stock market and into tangible assets like Real Estate. Says Ricardo Salazar, Director of Events for Sacramento Real Estate Investment Association (SacREIA). “Folks want to have something that they can relate to, something more predictable.” Declining prices, in Sacramento and across the nation, have investors interested. Some look at single family homes, while others look at Apartment Buildings.

Apartments can be less risky than a single family rental. Built for cash flow, apartments can be more stable. The reason is based on numbers. “If you have a house and the renter moves out, you have a 100% vacancy rate,” Said Anthony Chara of Apartment Mentors. “If you have ten, 15, 20 units or more, and a renter moves out, you still have people paying your mortgage.” Robert Kiyosaki, author of “Rich Dad , Poor Dad” got out of the “Rat Race” by buying apartment buildings. Says Chara, “I wish I‘d started with Apartments. They can create massive cash flow; often are seller financed a plus today.”

The key is proper education. You must know if the seller is giving accurate numbers. Being able to understand terms like “capitalization

rate or cap rate” “operating ratio” or “debt service coverage ratio” is very important. “Too much Cash Go, and not enough Cash Flow?” says Chara, “look into Apartments.” Chara has a one day workshop on “How to Invest in Apartment Buildings” on Saturday June 20th from 9:00am to 5:00pm Location: the Holiday Inn NE, 5321 Date Ave, Sacramento CA 95841.
