OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL DENVER, COLORADO Food For Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark

Human ambition has been the source of many great accomplishments and the cause of great disasters and suffering. Such is the cost of our free wills and the subtle dangers of trusting more in self than in the wisdom and truth God has exhibited in actions and spoken through messengers in our history. This is the ever present choice for humanity and for each individual. Trusting in self is good when it relies on trusting in God as well. When it doesn’t, the trust can slip into the appealing traps of power, control, deceit, wealth and disregard for the sacredness of others and all of creation. We witness bits and pieces of this reality every day in our world and society, it not sadly, in our communities, families and marriages. What has sustained the human family throughout the ages is the constant mercy and involvement of God in the incomprehensible ways God is present in life. Isaiah (1st reading) expresses it in describing the Suffering Servant, a person who willingly gives his life for the rescue of all. The person is unknown , but we attribute his description to Jesus Whom we know did precisely that, and much more, for human life and salvation! Hebrews (2nd reading) refers to this in describing Jesus as “the high priest Who sympathizes with our weaknesses” offering mercy and grace for our needs. He saves us. Such truths should lead to humility, gratitude and trust. Ambition gets in the way amongst those closest to Jesus. James and John ask for prominent places when Jesus enters into His glory! They are arrogant enough to believe they can match Jesus in whatever He will do for the people. Jesus deflates their ambition and chides the other disciples angered by their request. It is a universal message to all who believe: “whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant and whoever wishes to be first will be the slave of all!” We could not possibly understand or accept this were it not for the truth we cherish and respond to, Jesus, “Who did not come to be served, but to serve and give His life as a ransom for all.” What is my ambition?

As you know this is Italian Heritage Month, we have a sculpture by the front entrance entitled Ellis Island: New Hopes, New Fears” fashioned by Frank Yantorno. It is a gift to us, given by Judge Michael C. & Clair E. Villano. We are grateful for those who have donated to help defray the cost of the Church stained glass windows. There are envelopes on the tables at the entrance of the Church, if you wish to help. How will we share this responsibility and provide leadership and loving service with and for God's people into the future?

He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” -Luke 1:30-3 -Excerpts from the 40 Days of Life Campaign
