OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL DENVER, COLORADO Food For Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark

All of the readings are efforts to explain and convince us of the meaning, purpose and fulfillment of God’s will in the person of Jesus. This process is ever new since each generation of humanity begins without knowing God or the lifestyle of faith. This has not changed over the course of time. We begin with an innate hunger for truth, meaning and purpose in life, a sense of awareness that only in finding these answers will we be able to experience fulfillment. We would all love shortcuts, absolute answers and guarantees in pursuing this goal. It happens but not in the way we expect. It is unique and private, a personal discovery of treasure. Sounds appealing and all seek it. Sadly, human history, and our own time on earth, display how deadly are the results of those who have found, and pledge allegiance to, answers which glorify self and the things which give no life. It is the story of Adam and Eve, ever updated by the changes in life brought about by knowledge, reason, science and all the blessing they contain and all the fantasies they encourage. This is so because none of them invite or welcome God into the picture and their lives. Thus, as people of faith, we are full human aspirations, and we’ve found a rudder, a ballast, to steer us away from disaster! We’ve found Jesus and the gift of love! In a word, that’s all every reading and every page of Scripture contains. A God Whose Love is incomprehensi-ble and faithful, Whose Love heals, repairs, forgives the blunders of all of us, given capacities for goodness and greatness, but subject to the traps and deceptions which freedom provides. God is love: no coercion, not threats, no demands, but a gentle invitation to trust and believe. That’s in all the readings, from Acts (1st reading) where preserving in the Good News (Word of God) is embraced despite all the hardships it brings, to Revelation (2nd reading) where such faithfulness is depicted as “a new heaven and a new earth.” This simply informs us of God’s Spirit working in those who believe. It results in, “Behold, I make all things new!” This means us when we live God’s truth and share God’s love. Thus, Jesus is glorified (Gospel) because we have embraced His message, example and life. We have heard, accepted and lived His one commandment: “Love on another!” It is humanity’s only hope as we face the future.
