The feast of Our Lady of Lourdes falls on Tuesday of this week, the 11th of February. In 1992 our late Holy Father John Paul II wished to acknowledge in a special way the many cures and miracles that have occurred over the past 150 years at the waters of Lourdes. For that reason, he designated February 11th as the World Day of the Sick. He meant this day to be, as he wrote, “a special time of prayer and sharing, of offering one’s suffering for the good of the Church, and of reminding us to see in our sick brothers and sisters the face of Christ, who by suffering, dying, and rising achieved the salvation of humankind.” It should still surprise us that, in this age of skepticism and unbelief, millions of pilgrims continue to visit the grotto in Lourdes every year, drawn there by the hope that their suffering due to illness might be alleviated through the intercession of the Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Lourdes. Who would have thought that the alleged appearance of Mary to a nearly illiterate peasant girl in a remote and forgotten village in the mountains of southern France would make such a commotion and eventually become known around the world? Who could have guessed that on the testimony of this frail and sickly child, one day a large basilica would be built, that books would be written, and that people from far and wide would gather to sing, to pray, and to bathe in the healing waters? The well-recorded facts are that a beautiful woman carrying a rosary began to show herself to a village girl, Bernadette Soubirous, on February 11, 1858 and she continued to do so until July 16th of that same year. The Lady identified herself to Bernadette in the girl’s Pyrenean dialect as “The Immaculate Conception,” a term Bernadette had never heard and which she certainly did not understand. Of course, no one believed her story when she began to tell it. During one of her last visits, the Lady asked Bernadette to dig in the earth at her feet. A small trickle of water bubbled forth and continued flowing until it became a large stream. The Lady never claimed that this water had healing properties, but as people began to make their way to the mountain village and to bathe in the stream, amazing cures were reported. Today, over five thousand miraculous healings have been investigated and proved. Illness and disease along with death itself will always remain the great shadows hanging over our human existence, reminding us of the impermanence of this life. Let us, then, continue to pray for the sick, asking the Lord through Our Lady of Lourdes to relieve their suffering as we set our sights on that eternal realm beyond this world where there is no more pain or death, and where every tear will be wiped away. Fr. Ulysses

Padre Ulises
