Councillor Claims Rush Residents Misled A major row is brewing between Rush Community Council and a local councillor over Eirgrid’s under- ground cables in the town. Cllr Ciaran Byrne (Lab), maintains that the Community Council are disingen- uous regarding the facts related to safety issues of the cables. He maintains that they have ignored overwhelming evidence from experts around the world, relating to the cables. “The most recent report was commis- sioned by the Department of the Environment that the buried Eirgrid high voltage direct current cable (HVDC) is safe.” He said, “What’s worse, the Community Council has tried to suppress different views to its own being communicated to the people of Rush. They have instructed the editor of the Rush and District Community News not to publish an article I send in, in response to an invitation to do so. It has also rejected the report commissioned by the Department of the Environment, whose independent judgement it had previously agreed to accept, because it doesn’t support the Community Council’s position,” says Byrne. He continued, “I have spent the past decade working closely with the Rush Community Council, but what has happened in the past year has been, frankly, appalling. Decent people in Rush have been mislead into believing this cable will damage their children’s health to the point where some are now planning to physically obstruct the development of a major part of Ireland’s electricity infrastructure. Such an obstruction of cable laying by Eirgrid is utterly unjustified. Members of the Community Council who have a vested financial interest in rela- tion to this project should also declare it publicly,” he concluded. Meanwhile, the local Chamber Of Commerce wants Eirgrid to re-route the project. Members of the chamber say that concern for the businesses in Rush is rising because digging up the Main Street in such hard times is the last thing the already struggling shops and businesses need. Chairperson of Rush Chamber, Michael Coffey, said, ”The disruption that this project will involve is bound to have a detrimental effect on businesses in the town. The roadworks will be there for months, with machines parked outside shop fronts and endless traffic jams will ensue. The fear is that this will cause shoppers to travel elsewhere to avoid the chaos. The Chamber is not opposed to Eirgrid or the Interconnector project, however it does not want it to travel up their Main Street,” he concluded. Cllr. Sheila, who turns 90 this Wednesday, has two very caring daughters, Dora and Síle who are on hand to help out at all times. Dora has been her mother’s carer since she suffered a stroke when she was 75. However, Sheila really enjoys her time when she is at the Unit. Síle told the County Leader, “We really appreciate the care our mother is given when she goes to the unit and the opportu- nity for Dora to have a break. Dora has been fundraising for the ‘Calcutta Rescue’ project for the last three years and mum suggested she fundraise for the Unit in Lusk, as it is a great asset to the community”. Dora, with the help of many members of the community, managed to raise 2,000 for the Unit. She held car boot sales and people have been very generous supporting the cause. The unit opened in 2001 and has 50 beds, 40 of which are for full time residents and 10 for respite. Geraldine McNally, Director Of Nursing at the unit, told the County Leader, “ Sheila’s daughters are great to have done this. The unit is a great place to work and everyday it’s full of visitors. I love my work here and really enjoy working with the elderly who make every day a joyous occasion,” concluded Geraldine. The unit is in line with Government policy on providing services for older people, which is to maintain them in dignity and independence at home and to provide a high quality of hospital and residential care for older people when this is no longer a viable option. Last year, staff and clients of the unit celebrated the completion of an innovative project, when they launched their new exercise DVD “Le Cheile”(together). The DVD is a sit down exercise programme suitable for older persons particularly those with reduced mobility. Howth Parking Fees Could Fund Ambulance ServiceDeputy MichaelKennedy, (FF) hascome up with a novelway of providingfunding for the cost ofan ambulance forSwords Fire Brigade. He said, ”Revenuegained by instigatingpaid parking in Howth

could be put to gooduse and help with thecost of an ambulancefor Swords FireBrigade. I was shockedto hear that the HSE nolonger has the funds foran ambulance for theSwords Fire Brigade. In 2009 this ambulance

responded to 4500emergency calls, 30 percent of which werehigh emergency calls.”The loss of this ambu-lance would be a hugeblow to North CountyDublin as it will seri-ously reduce the pre-hospital medical care

available to areas allover the region. He continued, “I under-stand that there areconstraints in publicfunding, so I amproposing a means ofraising revenue locallyso that the CountyCouncil could fund the

retention of the ambu-lance. Currently thereis no on-street paidparking in Howth.Other towns andvillages in the NorthCounty, like Malahide,Swords, Rush, Skerriesand Balbriggan allhave on-street paidparking.” The fundsfrom paid parking inHowth could prove tobe very lucrative for

the local authority. Itcould potentiallyoperate like other

towns where parkingwould be free on aSunday, so it would notdisrupt the flow of visi-tors to the village at theweekend.“In these times whenpublic funds are limitedwe must be creative inhow we secure neces-sary services. In myview an ambulance forSwords Fire Brigadeand the potential for

saving lives andimproving outcomesafter serious illness oraccident are worthhaving to pay forparking in Howth.” Adetermined Kennedyconcluded by saying, “Iwill be writing to theCounty Manager of theCouncil to propose thisidea and I look forwardto hearing hisresponse.”

Inadequate Facilities AtBalbriggan Social Welfare Office

Deputy James Reilly (FG) has sent a stronglyworded letter to the Minister for Social and FamilyAffairs, regarding the inadequate facilities atBalbriggan Social Welfare office. Inthe letter he said, “I have receivedmany complaints about the totally inad-equate social welfare office inBalbriggan and the lack of adequatestaff numbers employed there to dealwith the increasing number ofclaimants who are becoming unem-ployed. Balbriggan needs a biggersocial welfare office to deal with allclaimants. The office there is too smalland the senior officer who agreed to this inadequateaccommodation should be interviewed and askedfor an explanation as to why he or she chose such a

small office that is not fit for purpose. Claimantshave to trek to two offices in Dublin. They are indire financial circumstances and cannot afford to bespending €10 or €15 for a return trip, because asenior officer in the social welfare department sawfit to approve a totally inadequate office for the

major town of Balbriggan.” He continued, “I am also informed that thevery pleasant and efficient staff in theoffice are under severe pressure and needmore manpower. Can you review that issueso claimants are processed in a timelymanner. There are many premises vacant atreasonable rents available in Balbriggan. The least we can do as a nation is givepeople who become unemployed a bit ofdignity and ease of access to the social

welfare system, by making sure that their localoffice is fit for purpose which would be of adequatesize and properly staffed.”

A farming family from Oldtown have decidedto use their cereal crops to develop an alterna-tive ‘green energy’ fuel. They were one of just10 companies identified by Enterprise Irelandas a ‘high potential start up’ to complete theprestigious 2010 Enterprise Ireland SuperValuSupplier Development Programme. Niall McGrath, co-owner and farmer changedthe focus of his farming two years ago to beginproducing an eco friendly fire log, which henamed Strogs. Proactively selling andmarketing a product were completely newareas for Niall and became the main motiva-tion for him taking his place on theprogramme. He felt it provided invaluableinsight into what buyers are looking for andrequire. The innovative programme is designedto support small companies achieve the stan-dards required to get their products onSuperValu’s shelves.

Now in its fourth year, this widely respectedprogramme brings together collaborationbetween state agencies, such as Bord Bia andTeagasc to help these small companiesbecome more ‘industry ready’. Niall said, “I felt like a sponge on theprogramme and soaked up every bit of infor-mation I could. Most importantly, it taughtme how to relate to and understandwhat buyers were looking for, which iskey if you want to get your brand out toa wider audience. We are now gearingup to roll out through Musgraves at theend of the month, an achievement wewould have never realised, without theprogramme,” said Niall.“Kelly Spillane, Programme Manager,High Potential Start Ups, Enterprise

Ireland added, ”Enterprise Ireland is delightedto work with SuperValu on our tailor-made,industry intensive programme, which effec-tively takes companies like Niall McGrath’s tothe next stage of their development”.

Council DragsIt’s Heels OnOldtown Estate

Residents of eco friendly housingestate, Clonmethan Green inOldtown are still up in arms over theway they have been left in limbo inregard to the huge fuel bills theyface. The County Leader broke thisexclusive story early inAugust, when firstcontacted by the resi-dents. The residentshave had excessivelyhigh bills, many are over€1000. These ecohouses were featured onRTE’s popularprogramme, ‘About theHouse’, and have failedto reduce people’s billsand help the environ-ment, on account of the systemrunning up high costs to use. With the arrival of the first frost andthe prospect of a harsh winter tocome, the residents face a bleakwinter. This, on top of an equallybleak budget, is set to make lifemiserable for many. Last week, Councillor Clare Daly(SP) told the County Leader, “It’ssimply not good enough that a reporthasn’t been produced by the indepen-dent assessor. After four months you

would expect a preliminary interimreport. It’s clear that the fault lies notwith the residents, because 30people can’t have got working thesystem wrong”.A report was issued by ‘NuTechRenewable Ltd’ in April which indi-cated that if the system was operatedas designed, electricity bills wouldbe lower. All residents were visitedin May and the system was explainedto them in detail. However, in Julythe complaints were still comingfrom the residents and it was agreed

to engage the services ofan independent consul-tant, ‘Delap and WallerEcoCo Ltd’, to make anassessment and seewhere changes needed tobe made. Last week, Dalyrequested from theCounty Council, that thereport be brought back tothe councillors in twoweeks. A council officialsaid this would not be

possible and it would be raised againin one month’s time. In it’s report, the council added that it wouldproduce a ‘plain English guide’ tousing the system. “This has to be sorted before the realwinter kicks in. It’s unacceptable toleave residents afraid to put theirheating on and stressed out withmassive bills, and this is even beforethe budget. This shows what a night-mare situation these people are livingin”, concluded Daly.

Deputy Darragh O’Brien (FF) hascalled on ministers to include pro-business initiatives inthe upcoming budget toincreases confidence inthe business community. He hopes that this willhelp jobs growth in theeconomy. Speaking in the Dail,O’Brien said, “We mustbe creative with regardto the SME sector in thebudget by supportingindigenous businesses. This can bedone in several ways, including

through expenditure under thecapital programme. I can see the

benefits of the work beingdone to build new schoolsand work done by localcontractors under thesummer works scheme. The State is getting morefor less, which must be atthe centre of its effortsover the next four years.” O’Brien, who is vice-chairman of the DáilPublic Accounts

Committee, also said a politicalconsensus on the four year

budgetary framework beingprepared by the Government isimportant as “it would result in areduction in the cost of borrowingfor the State.” “While I do not expect to achieveconsensus on every aspect of theforthcoming budget, a generalconsensus on the four-yearbudgetary plan to be published soonwould send out the correct message. He also focussed on the positiveindicators in the economy that mustbe welcomed and supported.” Manymore new investments are in thepipeline and I commend the IDAand Enterprise Ireland on the workthey have done in this regard.

An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen officially opened Dublin Airport’s Terminal 2 last Friday, 19th November. TheTaoiseach described the new terminal as a key infrastructural investment. “T2 was designed and built, not justfor this year or the next, but for many decades into the future,” according to Mr Cowen. “To view it through theprism of the current downturn would be short-sighted in the extreme. By investing prudently in improved facili-ties, we are laying the foundations for future growth and prosperity; not just for Dublin Airport, but also for thewider Irish economy,” he said. During three years of construction, more than 10,400 men and women wereinvolved in the project and more than 1,000 new jobs will be created with the opening of the new terminal. It

will dramatically improve the travel experiencefor all Dublin Airport users for many years tocome. With its steel and glass facade, the newterminal makes use of natural light to create amodern and comfortable space for bothdeparting and arriving passengers. The threestorey terminal building has been designedwith bright spaces in areas where passengersdwell such as check-in, baggage reclaim, secu-rity and the departures lounge.

Balbriggan ChefScoops CertificateOf Merit Local chef, Paul Morrison from Balbrigganscooped a Certificate of Merit for his first-time entry in the Chef of the Yearcompetition at the recent SodexoIreland Salon Culinaire 2010. Paul isbased at FAS in Baldoyle. He said, “As it’s the first time I’veentered the Chef of the Year compe-tition, I was happy with my result, asinternal competitions are just astough as external ones, if nottougher! The judging panel ismade up of very experi-enced competition chefsfrom inside andoutside the company.Everything fromtaste to overallpresentation isclosely scruti-nised and it pushesyou toper formwell infront ofyour own

colleagues,” he said. Heated, but friendlycompetition flavoured the event, as bothchefs and non-chef entrants battled toscoop a top spot in their individualclasses. These included signature break-fasts, gourmet four course dinners andmodern vegetarian dishes, as well asdessert tarts, novelty cakes, boxed saladsand making the perfect cappuccino. Therewas also a Mystery Basket Class, where

contestants had to devise a two-course meal on the spot from a boxof ingredients handed to them.Top restaurant owner and televi-

sion chef, Derry Clarke ofL’Ecrivain Restaurant in Dublinis closely involved in ongoing cheftraining and craft development.

He said, “Aside from my ongoingwork with Sodexo, this is also my

second year to be a guest judgeat the Salon Culinaire.

Again, I was extremelyimpressed by thequality and standardof the entries, as itshowed that havinga passion for foodwasn’t just

confined to thechefs, ’ hesaid.

He said, “Figures from the Central StatisticsOffice show that the number of people signing on inBalbriggan fell by 4.7 per cent in October alone and isdown 7 per cent since August. There are also positiveindicators from the social welfare office in Swords whichrecorded a 2.5 per centreduction in October.” “Arecent survey by the SmallFirms Association on busi-ness sentiment among smallcompany owners showed ithad markedly improvedsince this time last year andalmost a third of companyowners now rate their busi-ness as 'good' or 'verygood.” “In North CountyDublin the jobs position isthankfully improving. Hundreds of new jobs are beingcreated at Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport due to open thismonth. Many additional jobs are being created throughrecent announcements by Stream Ireland; Kelloggs andHertz - both of whom are expanding their European head-quarters in Swords, as well as the recent opening of thetwo motorway service areas on the M1 at Lusk. In addi-tion to this the small to medium business sector in NorthDublin is performing well. I have met many new busi-nesses who have started new business ventures, many withthe assistance of Fingal County Enterprise Board,” heconcluded.

Struggling Homeowners To Get HelpTD Michael Kennedy(FF), has said that a rangeof new measuresannounced will helphomeowners who arestruggling to pay theirmortgage. Kennedy told the County Leader,“Recommendations madeby an expert group set upto look into the issue ofpersonal debt and mort-gage arrears have thesupport of the govern-ment and will be imple-mented shortly. Includedin these recommendationsis a Deferred InterestScheme for borrowerscan pay at least 66 percent of the interest. Thiswould give borrowers upto five years to get backon their feet. It is alsorecommended thatlenders should considerfacilitating borrowers innegative equity who wishto trade down to a moreaffordable home. Where amortgage is unsustain-able, assessment forsocial housing should bedone before repossessiontakes place.”“A mechanism is recom-mended to allow repos-sessed borrowers toremain in their homes fora time, allowing the

housing authority time tosource appropriateaccommodation. It isfurthermore recom-mended that a statutorynon-judicial debt settle-ment system should beestablished. Protectingfamily homes is a majorpriority for Fianna Fail.We are already helping

almost 18,000 familiesdirectly through mortgageinterest supplement. Wehave refocused MortgageInterest relief to helpthose who bought theirhomes at the peak of themarket. In addition, banksmust now wait at leasttwelve months beforethey can apply for repos-session. I know there arefamilies in my ownconstituency who havelost their jobs or havetaken a pay cut and arestruggling to keep up withtheir mortgage payments

as a result. Thesemeasures in addition tothe practical action we

have taken to date willhelp them retain theirhome. I would urge thosewho are worrying abouttheir mortgage repay-ments to talk to their

lender. In addition, confi-dential free advice oncoping with debt prob-lems is always availablewith MABS,” concludedKennedy.

McInerneyOutlinesConcerns At ConferenceGerry McInerney, Managing partnerat McInerney Saunders CharteredAccountants in Swords, was one ofthe speakers at a Golf Businessconference held on Friday last, 19thNovember at the NationalConvention Centre. The conferencewas organised by Carr Golf and itstheme was about how the golfindustry should respond to thecurrent crisisDermot Desmond was the keynotespeaker, and he delivered an inci-sive speech that spelled out the stateof the industry and the changes thatwere required at national level. The

changes are needed to create theclimate in which tourism and relatedleisure industries, of which golf isone, can recover and grow. Gerry McInerney stressed the needfor government and airport authori-ties to act to reduce landing costsfor airlines in return for theircommitment to grow tourist trafficinto Ireland. Golf related businesswould be an element of suchgrowth. Mr Desmond agreed withhim that any growth in the tourismand leisure industries could, in theshort-term, only come from abroad.Overcapacity, due to excessivedevelopment and depressed demand

on the home market, arising fromthe current uncertainty and reducedspending capacity, were cited as themain reasons for the industry’scurrent woes. Domestic demand isforecast to reduce even further overthe next four years if the govern-ment is to achieve its budgetaryobjectivesTurning his attention to the chal-lenges faced by golf clubs, GerryMcInerney stated during a questionand answer session that commercialgolf concerns generally did not havethe same degree of member loyaltyas private member clubs. However, they were often more adaptable intheir ability to respond to changegiven that they were not managed by committee and their plans were not subject to member ratifica-tion in AGM. He concurred with others who spokeof the need for all golf businesses tohave clear strategic business plans

and to adopt bestmanagement practiceand proceduresincluding the use ofyield management tech-niques and outsourcingto maximise returnsfrom assets according todemand. He also advo-cated that clubs bring infacilitators to assist informulating their plansas often there is resis-tance to such planningwhen it is led internally- “a prophet is neverhonoured in his owncountry” he said.Gerry McInerneybelieves there is alesson there for the

private member clubs and for busi-nesses generally. The conferencewas well attended and the organ-isers undertook to follow up with asummary of the proposals emergingfrom all of the contributions thatmight see a new representative bodyset up for all in the sector. McInerney Saunders, through threeof its partners, Gerry McInerney,Cathal Saunders and DonaghWaters, are specialists in the golfsector and provide compliance andstrategic planning advisory servicesto private member clubs, commer-cial golf ventures and to businessesservicing the sector

Having been made redundant inApril 2009, many employees ofSR Technics looked at opportuni-ties to up-skill or to further theireducation in order to makethemselves more employable. The Government made an appli-cation for assistance through theEuropean GlobalisationAdjustment Fund (EGF) to helpsupport redundant workers. These supports include occupa-tional guidance, individualisedtraining and upskilling courses, including IT skills, further educa-tion and third level programmes. One of the main bodiesproviding these supports was AllHallows College. Former SRTworker and Swords resident,John Devlin told the County

Leader, “FÁS had a very limitedrange of courses on offer tohighly qualified AircraftMaintenance Engineers andoffice staff. These people werealready very computer literateand highly educated in their ownfields of logistic control, purchasing, finance, schedulingetc. Initially, a number of courseswere started in some institutesbut were postponed. This wascaused by fears of non-paymentof fees, when the original appli-cation for the EGF was returnedby the EU to Dublin seeking

“clarifications”. About 40former employees of SRTechnics had enrolled at AllHallows to study for a Bachelorof Arts degree in Personal andProfessional Development. Muchto the credit of the College, theycontinued to support thestudents in the hope that thefunding from the EGF wouldcome through eventually. Devlinwas full of praise for All Hallowsand their decision to continuethe course in spite of the doubtssurrounding the funding. TheEGF funding runs for a period of24 months from the date of theinitial application for funds, andnot from when the application isgranted approval. “A year hasbeen wasted because the initialapplication was returned andnow, through no fault of theirown, the former SR Technicsemployees feel they are beingpenalised again. While theCollege authorities have shownfaith with the students, it is upto the Government to make surethat the funds are available toallow the students to completetheir studies and that no fundsare returned to Europe becauseof time constraints,” heconcluded.

Attention Jobseekers

What to expect …… You arrive at the dreadedmeeting to hand in your noticeand advise your currentemployer that you are movingon to pastures new. What doyou do when your currentemployer takes the opportu-nity to tell you they had youmarked for greatness? Theywanted to offer you a raiseanyway, did you not knowhow well regarded you are? What do you do in such a situ-ation? Plan for it ahead of time! You were at a point where youdecided that you needed toleave your current company. For most people money is nottheir primary reason for seekinga new role. Normally it is aboutfeeling valued, your career

progression opportunitiesand location. The

journey you under-took from appli-

cation to interview to offer takesa huge emotional investmenton the part of the candidateinvolved. You have put yourselfthrough this, felt vulnerablewhen preparing for interviewand perhaps even used valu-able annual leave to prepare foryour interview or to attend theinterview. You have felt theworry and anxiety of waiting foran update on the role you haveapplied for, not to mention theeuphoria you felt after beingoffered your new job.Now to confuse matters youare being flattered by yourcurrent employer and beingasked to remain in your currentrole –all of a sudden there arepromising opportunities in thepipeline for you as an individual, when yesterday or in your lastreview, you were being toldthere was no room for progres-sion or salary increase. It isalways easier to accept the flat-tery, possible promotion andadditional income that appearto have been envisaged in yourfuture and additional income.Ask yourself this, if youremployer thinks you are wortha raise today, what makestoday different from yesterdayor your last review.Seriously consider what yourmotivation was for leavingyour current role and

also what so engaged you withthe new company which moti-vated you to hand in yournotice. If you remain in yourcurrent role, will anythingchange; will your loyalty bequestioned? This is an incred-ibly important decision, soconsider it very carefully.

Best of Luck
