Balbriggan GetsAll Jazzed Up

Venues across Balbriggan played host to a variety ofJazz musicians as part of Autumn Jazz on Sunday,September 11th last. The celebration of Jazz music andArt was warmly received in the town. Not to beoutdone by the Skerries Soundwaves Festival,Balbriggan presented four fantastic gigs across thetown. The Gypsy Jazz duo of Patrick Collins and DrazenDerek began proceedings in Molly’s Coffee Gallery onBridge St. and would have had anyone believe they’dbeen transported to New Orleans, and that LouisArmstrong could walk in any minute to join in on thegig. The Laveer Restaurant in the Bracken Court Hotelthen hosted Balbriggan jazz regulars, 3dB. This trioimpressed the audience with their mellow bass, rhythmic beats and wonderfully improvised guitar.

Dave McClune, the band’s drummer, who forms thetrio along with Darren Rooney on bass and Barr Leahyon guitar told the County Leader. “Well we’ve startedto gather a bit of an underground following. We’vebeen playing gigs in Molly’s for a while now, and havehad a great response to the music. All going well, hopefully this will be made into an annual event.”The Humbuckers were then the second band to play inMolly’s at four and finally, the Tommy Halferty trioplayed an evening performance in the Laveer restau-rant. The day of Jazz was a huge success inBalbriggan, and should inspire more people to seekout these wonderful gigs.

There has been a massive groundswell of support from the NorthCounty and Swords in particular for the plight of Louise Monaghan. The Swords mother, whose six year old daughter, May was abductedby her ex husband, has been reunited with her daughter in Syria. Thenegotiations to have May returned to her home in Cyprus areongoing and at a delicate stage, at the time of going to press. Everyone can identify with the anguish that a family endures when achild is abducted. It is every family's dread, more so when it occurson foreign soil. Young May Assad Monaghan was taken from herhome in Limassol, Cyprus, where Louise works as a travel represen-tative, but now faces a struggle to get her out of the war-torncountry. Determined Louise travelled to Syria, and succeeded inmeeting her daughter, but fears still exist regarding her safety inthe unstable country. The little girl was snatched by Louise's

estranged husband, Mostafa Assad, and taken to his hometown ofIdlib. She met him at the Turkish border and has since beenreunited with young May at his family's home. A father enjoysautomatic custody rights over his children under Syrian law.Louise’s sister, Mandy, said she now feared for her sister and littleniece. She believes the kidnapping stunt is an attempt to force areunion between the couple, who divorced last year. Police inCyprus launched a manhunt for Mr Assad on suspicion of kidnap-ping when the little girl failed to return home after he had taken herfor a day out. But once he crossed the border into Syria fromTurkey, he was protected under Syrian law. Louise's father, wellknown Swords man Frankie Monaghan was very emotional andclearly distressed by the whole situation. He told the CountyLeader that he was "too upset to speak about the events". Hementioned the stress of the whole situation was taking a great tollon him and the entire family, but he was uplifted to know about thelevel of support that exists for the Monaghan family. Meanwhile, aspokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said it was"providing every assistance" to the family.

People in the North County who have endured theproblem of pyrite in their homes are set to getrecognition at last. Deputy Alan Farrell (FG) haswelcomed the announcement by EnvironmentMinister, Phil Hoganthat his department willbe establishing anIndependent WorkingGroup to facilitatehomeowners affectedby pyrite. The Minister announcedthat he has establisheda panel to seek to iden-tify a way forward inregard to pyrite contam-ination in privatehousing stock. He envisages that this will becarried out by the panel through a process ofengagement with the parties concerned, princi-pally the industry and affected homeowners. The establishment of the panel comes in thewake of a decision by Homebond, the industryguarantee scheme, to write to affected homeowners indicating that they would not acceptliability for this form of building defect. The Minister said: “This is of course a civil matterto which the State is not a party or in any way

liable. Nonetheless, I think it right that I shouldtry to facilitate a resolution. I am confident thatthe panel I am establishing, will make every effortthrough engagement with the parties to identify away forward. I am asking them to compile areport on their efforts and I shall arrange to placethis in the public domain.” Farrell told the County Leader, “Having experi-enced the issue with my own home, I have beenthrough almost five years of strife and worry thatcame with the discovery of pyrite. Along withhundreds of households in the North County, Iknow first hand that dealing with the significantamount of misinformation and misleading advicethat seems to surround the issue is very difficultfor anyone in this situation to contend with.”“The working group will consist of an indepen-dent chairperson alongside appropriate expertswho will call in all relevant bodies involved, including Homebond, developers, quarries andthe Construction Industry Federation. However, the group will also be instructed to engage withaffected homeowners and associations. “It is now essential that in every estate wherehomes are affected by pyrite that the house-holders unite together, become organised andmake a comprehensive submission to theWorking Group. “I would urge all resident groups in Dublin Northto engage fully and positively with the newWorking Group. I am committed to ensuring thatrepresentatives from our area will have theopportunity to fully engage with the process,” heconcluded. The panel is being asked to finalise areport as soon as possible.

A Swords councillor and a number oflocal residents are to make renewedcalls to the County Council with regardsto a failed proposal for a communitycentre in Brackenstown.

This latest development comesfollowing the recent earmarking of fundsfor similar projects in both Applewoodand Kinsealy/Melrose, with it nowhoped that the Brackenstown centremay be revived. It is thought that the Swords ManorResidents Association (SMRA), who hada meeting on Monday, 19th September, will approach the Council over the issueonce more in an attempt to reinvigoratethe previously failed campaign.Councillor Darragh Butler (FF) will alsobe backing the group and hascampaigned for the project’s deliveryover the past number of years. Speaking to the County Leader, SMRAsecretary, Mary Siggins, highlightedhow the area would greatly benefit fromthe centre: “The Brackenstown centrewould be great for the whole commu-nity. It would provide somewhere for theteenagers to go, somewhere for thesports teams, and also somewhere forthe residents association to meet. Itwould just provide a win win situationthroughout the whole community,” shesaid.Initially, back in 2009, the Council hadplanned on pumping €2.5 million in tothe project with further fundingexpected to follow the year after. However, due to the governmentfreezing some of the Council’s capitalspending funds the project failed tomaterialise. It is now believed that, due to the

current economic climate, the centrecould be delivered at a reduced cost withthe prospect of job creation another keyaspect to be considered given Swords’relatively high unemployment levels.Cllr Butler, an active campaigner for theproject, has also been very insistent onthe centre's importance to the area whilehighlighting the very frustratingscenario for local residents. "I have received assurances from theCouncil that the provision of aCommunity Centre for the Brackenstownarea remains a top priority project withinthe Capital Programme of theCommunity, Culture & Sports Division. We will continue to keep this projecthigh profile and top priority so it is fullyplanned and ready to go for whenfunding does become available," Butlersaid.

Ingrid's mother was themuch loved actor, JoanBrosnan Walsh, whoamong many otherroles, played Mags inFair City for close to 20years. Joan left the ficti-tious Carrigstown inJanuary 2009, as shebravely fought MotorNeurone Disease whichresulted in her prema-ture death in Decemberof that year. Joan andher husband Willie, whoIngrid describes asbeing 'broken heartedwithout her,' alwaysloved to perform and

this passion has carriedon to the next genera-tion through Ingrid andher sisters Helen andRuth. “Our house wasparty central,” Ingrid

laughs. “The two ofthem were a real duo,dad would play thepiano and mum wouldsing. It was a brilliantway for us to grow up,very bohemian although

we didn't realise it at thetime.” Ingrid's love ofparties and an openhouse

continues to this day. A few years back, BarryKavanagh who runsRush Musical Societywith his wife, Helenasked members of thegroup to provide accom-modation during the runof the show for 'a groupof six young fellas, allabout 18' who travelledfrom Roundwood to takepart in the production. “Iput up my hand and saidsure we'll take them all, keep them together. They've been with usevery show since,” shelaughs. “They bring allthis energy with themand we love having ahouse full of people.” Her positive attitude tolife and her ability toembrace whatevercomes her way is partlyborne from adversity. “Ihad always been a bitsickly throughout myteenage years, but in my20s I became really illand was diagnosed withLupas which later led torenal failure. Havingtrained in Childcare andMontessori I worked fora lovely family as theirnanny and I also soldjewellery for them from

their stall in GraftonStreet. I absolutelyloved it but working outin the street in badweather conditionscaused my illness toreally kick in and I spentthree months in TheMater.” Shortly afterthis protracted spell inhospital, Ingrid met herhusband Christy and“we kind of knewstraight away this wasit,” she said. Following their marriageChristy, who had workedin security at St.Patrick's CollegeDrumcondra, changeddirection and trained asa nurse's assistant “sohe could look after mewhen I got sick,” Ingridexplains. “He now

works in St. Vincent'sHospital, Elm Park, trav-elling over and back onhis motorbike and heabsolutely loves it.”Thankfully Ingrid'shealth improvedimmensely when shereceived a kidney trans-plant six years ago aged40. “Talk about lifebeginning at 40,” shelaughs. “It was the firsttime in my adult life Iwas able to plan morethan a couple of monthsahead which is still areally weird concept for

me.” The inability tolook too far into thefuture appears to havehelped rather thanhindered Ingridthroughout her life andshe describes herself asbeing able to 'go withthe flow.' Following an unhappyyear in the early '80s atthe National College ofArt in Dun Laoghaire, she decided, on impulseto travel to Greece andwork there for a while.“I just thought Cretesounded nice. Myparents were great andknew I had to do it. Iworked in a bar, then arestaurant and stayed ina hostel, I just loved theindependence of it.”Her wanderlust spirit

has been infectious andherself and Christy havelived at 10 or 11 differentaddresses across Dublinbefore spending a yearin a mobile home on thebeach in Rush. “It waslovely. We'd no elec-tricity and obviously noTV but we'd oil lamps, agas fridge, a gas cookerand a shower. We'd alittle battery radio andall we did was read. Itwas literally back tobasics and was one ofthe best years we everhad.”

However, as Christyapproached his 40thbirthday eight years ago,he decided they neededto settle down and find ahome and they boughttheir terraced house inLoughshinny. “Ourhome reflects who weare,” Ingrid says. “It'stotally crammed withbooks and stuff and fullof colour and it's madbut we love it.”She is enthusiasticabout getting back toher painting in the artstudio herself andChristy built in the atticof their home. “Icouldn't go near thestudio after mum died; itwas like my wholecreativity just shutdown. I'm beginning toget it back now; I cankind of feel it. I paintaccording to my moodand at the moment I'mpainting tropical birdsand foliage and flowers, really colourful stuff.” Let's hope this creativeurge continues andIngrid and Christycontinue to embracewhatever comes theirway. “I don't open onedoor and close another, Ikind of like the idea ofhaving all doors openand moving in and out.” Ingrid is looking forwardto rehearsals beginningshortly for Rush MusicalSociety's next comicproduction Andy Capp, depicting the life of adysfunctional cartooncharacter who divideshis time between hisliving room couch andthe pub. She isdelighted that so manypeople from acrossNorth County Dublin areinvolved in the produc-tion and is grateful tothe audiences who comeout to support them.“Both the musicalsociety and the dramagroup in Rush have areputation for putting ongood shows and we've aloyal following which isgreat.” Ingrid is particu-larly excited about thegroup's 25th anniver-sary celebrations in 2013when in addition toperformances at home, the show will travel toLandskrona in Sweden.“I don't know if Barry,Helen or the committeeknow yet what the showwill be, but I hope to beinvolved, it's my release,my time out, my fun,”she concludes.

Fun loving actor, Ingrid Dunne.

Living in Loughshinny for the past eight years with husband Christy,Ingrid Dunne's love of performance, music and art is in her genes. She's an active member of Rush Musical Society and explains “I'm

totally my Mum's daughter. I just love being on stage performing assomebody else.”

Tree Planting Scheme For North CountyThe North County, oddly enough, is set to become brim full of trees withinthe next year. It seems to be one area that the County Council are notplanning to cut back on - that of tree planting. The planting policy is setto increase dramatically in the next few years. The council plan to have atleast 1,000 more trees planted around the North County a year in line withits new tree policy. Some trees will be removed that are considered to beplanted in inappropriate places and new ones will be placed elsewhere.
