Dublin Community Spirit Triumphs On St Patrick’s Day St Patrick’s Day proved to be one of the most colourful ever witnessed in the North County. The sun shone spectacularly and everybody in the county seems to have been to one of the parades. We had a total of five parades, which ensured that there was a day of celebration seldom seen in the region. With parades in Balbriggan, Lusk, Rush, Skerries and Swords, the diversity of cultures and traditions of our people was there to be enjoyed by all. There was a fantastic turn out, both by those parading and those lining the routes. A huge number of chil- dren took part – from all sorts of sports, dance and community groups and pubs and restau- rants all over the North County did a roaring trade, as families enjoyed the occasion. A remarkable aspect of the parades was the absence of commercialism. They represented a triumph of community endeavour and displayed the wonderful work of local volunteer groups and residents associations. This imagi- native flair was evident everywhere, with Rush providing a dazzling display of vintage cars which reminded us of a time long gone. Here, the evidence of community involvement was obvious. A similar theme was adopted in Skerries where the centenary of the 1911 census was commemorated. The residents of Skerries deserve special credit for this excellent parade. Swords also held a much welcomed parade after some years without one. The vast range of diversity was particularly evident here and the parade turned out to be a great success, attracting a huge attendance. Swords le chéile deserve great recognition for the success of this parade, which we hope will be an annual event. Lusk and Balbriggan also provided a day to remember, with bands and street entertain- ment provided for all. Both towns were awash with the national colours and exuded pride in their locality. Once again the voluntary commit- tees here take the kudos and show that creativity, flair and imagination combined with dedication and hard work are never far from the surface in the North County. This upbeat spirit will ensure that we can and will overcome all obstacles and have contributed hugely to making the North County the most desirable area of the country to live and the envy of all. We salute all our dedicated volunteers and community groups. See pages 10, 12 and 16 for our St Patrick’s Day colour pages. The delivery of the crucial Metro North infra- structural project seemed less certain this week, following a less than compelling commit- ment to its future from the Department of Transport. The business community are certain to be disappointed with a ‘feeble’ response from the Transport Department to a direct question posed by this newspaper, related to the project’s future. When questioned about the current situation regarding the commencement of preliminary works on Metro North and if the project will definitely go ahead, the response was worrying. It said, “The Government will make a decision on Metro North when it has time to consider it fully. The Minister (Leo Varadkar) is currently familiarising himself with all aspects of his Transport brief, and no decision will be made at this stage.” This seems a far cry from the vocal pre-election utterances of the Fine Gael party, who were fully committed to Metro North and the obvious benefits in will bring to the North County, and Swords in particular. These have been well documented in previous editions of this newspaper. It may well be a case of ‘First Night’ jitters, now that the public purse is within their grasp. Nevertheless, this latest Government line is set to cause concern within the business sector, who view Metro North as vital to the local economy. Minister Varadkar represents a large area of Swords, which will directly benefit from Metro North, yet he seems to be less than committed to the project at this stage. last edition of the County Leader, we featured theviews of the residents from Bremore Castle. Inresponse to this article, a number of residents fromHampton Woods expressed a different viewpoint. Thelocal authority intends to extinguish this right of wayand April 8th is the closing date for representations andobjections to be made to the Council in a bid to stopthem carrying this out. The Bremore Caste Residents'Association held a poll and the findings weresupportive of their stance, despite child safety and antisocial behavioural problems. The survey found that 70per cent had no particular view with just 10 per centbacking the call for closure. Double that number feltthe laneway should remain open as a thoroughfare forresidents and neighbouring estates. The same survey inHampton Woods showed that everyone, bar oneperson, voted to have the laneway closed. Local resi-dents have enlisted the help and advice of local coun-cillors to try and resolve the problem.Sandra Delaneyof the Hampton Wood Residents Association has ayoung family and she and her husband bought their

house precisely because it was in a cul de sac. A fewweeks ago. the Gardai were called to the lane, which isaround 50 feet from the Delaney's' home, to deal with aburning motorbike. Sandra told the County Leader,"The laneway is attracting unsociable behaviour fromteens. It's also not very safe for our children, I need eyeslike a hawk to make sure the kids are safe." Sandracontinued, "They congregate there at all hours andwhat’s even more disgusting is that the lane is oftenused as a urinal. It's disgusting when you think thatyoung children play in the area." Various suggestionshave been made by residents and local representativesalike. Former TD, Michael Kennedy suggested the lanebe closed at nightime, but Martin Sweeney from theCounty Council suggested that would be expensive andhighly unfeasible from a cost point of view. Now it willbe up to the the politicians to make the call to settle adispute which has rumbled on for the last six monthsand it will probably require the judgement of Solomonto settle it. Both sides have made their case, both havepositives and negatives and the councillors must make afinal decision on April 8th.

It’s only three feet wide at the entrance and 150 yardslong, but the laneway at Hampton Woods and BremoreCastle continues to polarise residents' opinions. In our

Council Approval For SkerriesProject Widely WelcomedLocal Fine Gael councillor, Tom O’Leary has expressedhis delight at the approval of the Holmpatrick Coveproject in Skerries. This project has received wide localsupport and is set to provide the seaside town with atourism bonanza. O’Leary said, “I voted for the newleisure complex for Skerries which, in time, will provideexcellent tourism and leisure facilities for Skerries resi-dents and community groups, as well as sporting clubs inthe area. Skerries has had a long tradition of welcomingtourists into our beautiful town and I welcome thisproject in these difficult economic times,” he said. Thisproject will bring very welcome local jobs and revenue toSkerries. He continued, “I hope it will kick start atourism revival in the town. When we had Red Island

Holiday Centre in the 70’s, weregularly had 700 visitors stayingthe town and spending moneylocally, generating income intolocal homes.” O’Leary thenmentioned other benefits toaccrue to the local community. “Ilook forward in particular to theinclusion of a swimming pool inthis proposal with local publicaccess as part of a proposed agree-

ment with the council. A local masterplan will beproduced by professional planners in Planning depart-ment of the council in which they will address any plan-ning concerns. I wish the proposer of this project welland hope he can drive the project forward as soon aspossible,” concluded O’Leary. The constuction ofHolmpatrick Cove could begin in early 2012.

Ooops...We Got TheFigures Wrong! In the last issue of the County Leader, we featured anarticle in respect of the severance pay for our deposedTDs who lost their seats at the recent General Election. However, we were too generous with taxpayers’money to the two deposed Fianna Fáil deputies,Michael Kennedy and Darragh O’Brien. Our figuressuggested that O’Brien and Kennedy were to receive alump sum of €99,215, with €9,140 per annum there-after. We are happy to provide amended figures, basedon Oireachtas figures. As both men have served threeplus years as a TD, they are actually due a total of€58,700 each. This figure breaks down as TD’spension of €9,400, pension lump sum of €28,200,termination lump sum of €15,400 and terminationpayments of €5,700. In the case of O’Brien, hisappointment to the Seanad means he no longer quali-fies for termination payments or lump sum. This seemslike a convoluted system and difficult to understand. Itis calculated as a 40th of one’s salary multiplied byyears or days of service. The pension lump sum isthree times the pension. The termination lump sumamounts to two months salary and is non-taxable Thebasic salary of a TD is €92,672. The series of termina-tion payments depends on their years in office.TrevorSargent, who has a Dail service of 18 years is due apension of €47,900, a pension lump sum of €143.800,a termination lump sum of €16,400. a terminationpayment of €61,500 and a ministerial pension of€10,000. This amounts to a total of €221,700. Whilst these figures for the former Fianna Fáildeputies are significantly less than those published in our lastedition of the newspaper, they still represents a very lucrative settle-ment for the defeated candidates. Our headline for the article read,

‘Sweet Deal For Our Deposed Politicians’. We still believe that thisis the case, particularly when you calculate the many years ofservice required in the private sector to realise redundancy figures tocompare to these.

B orn in Antwerp, Belgium in 1947, harpmaker extrordinaire, Jan Muyllaert settledin Ireland close to 40 years ago. Walking

through the gate of his home in Ardbraccan,Navan, Co Meath, surrounded by conifer trees, Iam struck by a sense of peace and solitude. Witha warm handshake and arresting brown eyes, Janleads me in to his workshop where I savour thesmell of freshly cut wood. While making manymusical instruments including guitars, violins andcellos, Jan is recognised as the pre-eminentdesigner and creator of Irish harps. Many of these harps are played in places as diverseas Japan and Anchorage, Alaska and their dulcettones can be heard on albums, such as ShaunDavey's The Brendan Voyage and Clannad'sGrainne Mhaol. Despite the current economic reces-sion, Jan has orders for harps until the end of theyear. An Irish harp has 'a distinctive feel, sound andweight' and each one is crafted by him personally, using Irish wood such as sycamore, walnut orcherry. Initially, Jan works on eight harps at a time, getting them to a particular point in the process andthen working on each one individually. “As onlyGod can make something perfect, each harp willhave a minor imperfection that makes no differenceto the playability or its appearance, but makes itpersonal and unique,” comments Jan.Contrary to my expectation, Jan did not grow upwith music in his home. “There was a mandolin inthe house, but it was never played. I started playingguitar in the '60s when I was 18 and fulfilled myterm of duty in the Belgian army. For something todo, we made up a little band.” His musical taste iseclectic, 'once it's good,' he laughs. He enjoys

music as varied as classical, Rory Gallagher, Queen,U2, and Shaun Davey, the traditional Irishcomposer. On leaving the army, Jan worked as adraftsman in Antwerp, and mixing with differentpeople in this cosmopolitan city, he got to know andlove Irish music. At this time he also startedplaying flamenco guitar. “I never had a properflamenco guitar, but I always practised anyway,' helaughs. “Eventually I started performing my ownsongs and gigging three to four nights a week in agypsy cellar in Antwerp on the way home from ArtCollege. It often went on until three or four in themorning, but after three near death experiences fromtotal exhaustion, I knew I had to do something. SoI quit my job.” Jan arrived off the ferry in Rosslare in the late 1960swith his friend, Bob and they were welcomed inpubs the length and breadth of the country. “Bobplayed the banjo and I played guitar.” They hitchedtheir way around Ireland for a few months oftentravelling with farmers, squashed between milkchurns. “It was great craic, we didn't think toomuch about it, we just went for it. We had our owntent and pitched up wherever we liked,” he recalls. On their next trip, Jan and Bob stayed in Bed andBreakfast accommodation where they paid threepounds for a room and an extra fifty pence if wewanted a shower. “If you played in a bar, you got

your drinks free and when a hat went around at theend of the night, there'd always be loads in it.” In 1972 Jan settled in Ireland, marrying MarieFinnegan, who grew up next door to the homethey've always lived in. He is deeply embedded inNavan life and in the 1990s coached basketball toteenage boys in St. Patrick’s School. This led to himtraining the Special Olympics basketball team, a rolehe has thoroughly enjoyed for the past 12 years. Heis also a committed member of Navan's Arch Clubfor people with learning disability. The club cele-brates its 25th anniversary in April this year.He is also involved in a 'top secret' project with tran-sition year students in St. Pat's to be entered in nextyear's Young Scientists Exhibition. Predictably, itis a project to provide a service to less fortunatepeople in society. Jan's sense of social justice andsocial responsibility can be traced back to hisrefusal to make records in 1960s Belgium. While

working with wood tocreate musical instru-ments is one of Jan'sgreatest pleasures, another is water sportsand over the years he hasmanaged to merge thesetwo pastimes, makingboats, surf boards andcanoes. Last year at theArt in Action festival runby the PhilosophicalSociety of Ireland atTowney Hall near Slane,he built an 18 foot canoein front of an audienceand describes the experi-ence as 'great fun.' Always challenginghimself creatively, Jancannot understand thenotion of retiring, if youwork at what you enjoy. His tall lean frame andsilver grey hair neatly tiedin a pony tail belie histrue age. His life is

bohemian, yet ordered. He works daily at hispassion continuously striving to enhance the experi-ence for both himself and his client. Never idle, hetrusts in fate and achieves a sense of peace visitingSt. Mary's Church in Navan. He has graspedchances and opportunities throughout his life, whilemaintaining a great degree of order, which he attrib-utes to his Belgian upbringing. “It's in my blood,”he laughs, “there's nothing you can do, ye know,”his charming accented English peppered with thisIrish idiom. His innate sense of order facilitatesrather than debilitates his art. Leaving Ardbraccanas the sun begins to set, my heart feels lighterhaving met this fascinating man and his warmwelcoming wife, Marie. A few days later HelenDavies' wonderful CD Chasing the Breeze, featuring her playing one of Jan's harps, arrives inthe post from him, and listening to it certainlysoothes the soul.

What is your goal whenengaging in writtencommunication? Everyinteraction from email, toyour cover letter to yourCV is an attempt to get infront of an employer to getyour new job.Considering the competi-tion is high and the prizeis so great the sloppinessof written communicationamazes most employers. The issues consistentlymentioned are: spel l ingerrors, incorrect tenses and“text” speak. It is vital that you appreciatethe nature of the relationshipyou are trying to create. This potential relationship ispurely professional. The

employer is not yourfriend, you are not on

fist name termsand formal

language and communica-tion is the only acceptableway forward. This over familiar style ofcommunication is the reasonmost people’s CV’s and orcover letters never progressto interview. It is vital that you presentyourself in a professionaland grammatically correctfashion to give yourself thebest possible chance atgetting that interview. This principle applies just asmuch to interviews.Communication haschanged fundamentally withthe advent of SMSmessaging and socialmedia. How many childrennow salute their neighboursor elders with Mr / Mrs. Thisis f ine in casual circum-stances it does not apply toprofessional interaction. Oldschool professional etiquettestill applies in job seekingand interview situations. Remember to have your CVchecked by at least twopeople before sending it toanyone. Regardless ofyour confidence in your

correspondence alwaysapply this rule. The stakes are high, therewards are great and youonly have one chance tomake a first impression!

Disgraceful ConditionOf Road Condemned

Fine Gael Councillor, Tom O’Learyhas delivered a letter of criticism to theCounty Council regarding the decrepitstate of the road from Naul to Oldtown, particularly as you enter Oldtown. “ihave just travelled on this road and itsabsolutely incredible the state of disre-pair of this road. It has ridges andpotholes that a tractor would find hardto negotiate safely. It need seriousstructural repair and reinstatement,” hesaid. “Its in such a bad state, it is myopinion it should be closed or repairedas an emergency repair job. He haswritten to the local authority about thisand received a reply, which stated,

“The council is aware that the condi-tion of the road referred to has deterio-rated significantly, as a result of themost severe winter weather experi-enced in recent times. The worstdamaged roads have been programmed for road strengthening/resurfacing in 2011.The statement continued,“Arrangements are also being made forthe temporary repair of the potholes onthese and other roads. However, it mustbe noted that it will take time to attendto these works, given the number ofroads that have been damaged. It wouldbe desirable to reconstruct/overlay allof the roads in question, however, thiscan only be carried out when the neces-sary funding can be identified.”

LANDSCAPING NEEDS

Kathleen & Emma O’Dwyer from Swords are picturedwith Toby the Clown at the Opening Weekend of theNew Look Woodies DIY, Airside Retail Park, Swords.

Having a garden might beno big deal to many of us;however if your garden isnothing special, maybeit’s time to think again. There are so many advan-tages to having a garden. Not only is it a place to getaway form the hustle andbustle of the house if youhave a busy home, but itcan be somewhere torelax. Big or small, turning your garden intoan oasis doesn’t have to bea big deal. Some of us are

born with green fingersand for those, this is agreat time to plan yourgarden for the year. Aftersuch a long and hardwinter, that we have justendured, frost burnt lawnsrequire tenderness to nursethem back. It has alwaysbeen the biggest aim for akeen gardener to obtainthe perfect lawn and manya Sunday afternoon hasbeen spent mowing, weeding and feeding.Hard work will bring therewards later on and all ofthe family can enjoy thebenefits of a beautifullycared for garden.Early weed invasionshould be plucked, getthem before they seed andrun riot. The benefits willbe reaped in summer, relaxing with a BBQburger in one hand andtipple of fancy in theother. Many a person whoenjoys culinary experi-mentation will grow theirown vegetables or herbstaking the creativity onestep further. For thosewho favour brightness andcolour, a flower garden isopted for which explodesin brilliance in spring andsummer. Colourful peren-nials should be set in posi-tion, watered in and givena feed that will see themthrough the season. Treatthem with TLC and theywill return the favour withradiant displays of flow-ering colour later on.
