The X-HALE Short Film Festival is an initiative developed by the Irish Cancer Society to encourage young people to take action on the issue of smoking in their own communities through the visual and engaging medium of film. It appears that plans for the development of a 350 million deep water port at Bremore, just north of Balbriggan have been effectively shot down under the government’s new port policy blueprint. The proposed new deepwater port was to be developed to provide support for Drogheda and Dublin ports. A government source confirmed that the new policy indicated that “there was no need for new capacity development and that any main develop- ments should be done at Dublin, Cork or Shannon, so it’s unlikely that Bremore will be progressed.” The news has been greeted as a blow to the local economy by Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce. It’s past President, Kevin Tolan expressed regret at the news of the Bremore project not going ahead. He told the County Leader , “The Chamber would have welcomed the extra jobs boost that such a project would have brought, especially in the construction phase of the project. Also there would have been industrial storage and warehousing opportunities, along with other ancillary services. These would have been a very welcome boost to the local economy here in Balbriggan.” Local councillor, May McKeon however was more upbeat about the project and feels that news of the demise of Bremore Port is premature. She told the County Leader, “I’m in no doubt that the project will proceed in the foreseeable future. Naturally, with the present economic climate, there is a reluctance to speculate when this might be. The Government announcement has not specifically ruled out Bremore, which has been thoroughly researched for suitability, rock forma- tion and deep water levels.” She continued, “My main concern is to keep this item on the agenda as a major priority for the area. The infrastructure associated with the siting of such a major facility will be of paramount importance to the economic future of Balbriggan and the surrounding area, which cries out for major investment, given the huge population, future graduates and opportunities to provide much needed employment,” she said. Her views were largely shared by Paul Fleming, CEO of Drogheda Port Company, who expressed a ray of hope that the project may proceed. He told the County Leader that he clearly saw a future for Bremore as a deep water port into the future. “It is not correct that Bremore will not be used as a deep water port in the future. As you know, considerable developmental work has indicated the suitability of Bremore as a Deepwater Port Facility. Detailed discussions on the current status of the Bremore project itself have yet to take place between Drogheda Port and the Department of Transport,” he said. The planned facility, which was to have been a joint venture between Drogheda Port Company and Treasury Holdings, which has been liquidated and whose assets are now under the control of Skerries Community Association has warned motorists using the local community centre that it is adopting a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to unauthorised vehi- cles parking in disabled spaces. Martin Russell, Chairman of the association, said this was an issue they’ve been dealing with for some time, and that it was totally unfair to those who genuinely needed the spaces. He told the County Leader: “It is just completely unacceptable that fully able bodied persons should park in the disabled drop off zone. They have no need to. The spacing is needed by many persons in our community with mobility issues and they alone should be using it.” He said the reason this problem arose in the first place was because St Patrick’s school (located just beside the community centre), had no suitable parking facili- ties them- selves so parents were forced to use the community centre. “While I understand the issues parents have, this is no excuse to be using the spacing,” he continued. “We cannot continue to let the issue go. We’ve received a lot of complaints about this, and it’s those who are in genuine need of those spaces that are missing out.” “The disabled spaces/disabled drop off zone are designated for the exclusive use of those with disabled parking permits and, given the serious nature of the complaints we’ve received, we want to let locals know that we have to take new measures to prevent unauthorised use of the spaces. ” The association has advised that it has a number of penalties in place for unauthorised vehicles who use the disabled spaces, including stickers being placed and photos being taken of the offending cars. “We don’t want to have to come down harshly on anyone, but we feel we have to take these extra measures to ensure those that need to use the spaces, will be able to use them freely, and without worrying whether they’ll be used up. We would appreciate the community’s support in this matter,” he concluded. Unauthorised Disabled Parking Problem In Skerries Bremore Port Project In Deep Water By Patrick Finnegan My McKeon NAMA. DAA To ImproveBoarding GatesDublin Airport Authority is investing more than€1 million in a major refurbishment of one of theoldest elements of Dublin Airport, namely the300 Boarding Gate area, which is located in thearea formerly known as Pier B.The construction programme is a value formoney solution aimed at radically improving thepassenger experience in the area. It will includethe provision of new state-of-the-art ceiling andwall finishes, a new floor, new passenger

seating areas andimproved lightingthroughout the area. Theconstruction project, isdue to be completedbefore the busy summerpeak at Dublin Airport.Dublin Airport spokes-woman, Siobhan Mooretold the County Leader,“Passengers will see ahuge difference when thiswork is complete, as itwill bring the 300 gates up to the standard of theother boarding gate areas at Dublin Airport. The300 gates have given more than five decades ofservice to the travelling public, and require asignificant upgrade to transform them into abright modern departures area for ourcustomers.”The 300 gates, which are accessed by passen-gers checking-in in both Terminal 1 and Terminal2, are airbridge served boarding gates that wereoriginally built as part of the Terminal 1construction programme in the early 1970s.

Community Centre InBalbriggan To Be Restored

Balbriggan TownCouncillor, GráinneMaguire (np), haswelcomed the decision bythe County Council torenovate and restore theold, vacant communitycentre in Pinewood inBalbriggan. According to the CountyCouncil, the building, which was damaged byfire in 2010, is due to berenovated with a view to itbeing used again used asa community facility. “There will be extensive renovation work involved butthe footprint of the building will remain the same,”they said. “It is estimated that the renovation work willtake roughly six months to complete, and it is hopedthat it will be completed in the current year. Finally, atthat stage it is hoped that Foróige will take on therunning of the facility.” Speaking to the CountyLeader, Cllr Maguire said the old centre had beenthere, unused for a number of years and once reno-vated it would once again become a valuable commu-nity amenity for the young people of Balbriggan. “I’mreally delighted that the community centre will berestored to its former glory.” “As Balbriggan is such apopulated area, with so many young people, there isalways a need for more community facilities. Theyoung people need a place they can go.” Cllr. Maguiresaid that once the building has been revived, this willalso help tackle the problem of anti-social behaviourthat is currently present around the area. “Anti-socialbehaviour is unfortunately always an issue nowa-days, and at the moment, the state of the building, and the fact that it’s obviously unoccupied, doesattract that type of behaviour. Hopefully, once theproject is done, we’ll see a decrease in this and seethe building being enjoyed and used by members ofthe community.” “I also want to point out that it isvery important that the residents of Pinewood get asay in the running of the centre,” she continued. “Iwant this to be something that’s enjoyed by them anda real positive for the area, and so this is a very impor-tant point that I will be looking at once the centre isrestored,” she concluded.

Last Friday, the long running battle between the CountyCouncil and Swords Barber came to an end, when theCouncil took over his lease. It would appear that a majorobstacle has now been removed in the Council's efforts toopen up Swords Castle completely.

The County Council hasunveiled plans to expand thepopulation of Rivermeade in StMargaret’s to 1,000over the next 20 yearsand make it a ‘carbonneutral’ community.According to a newLocal Area Plan (LAP)for Rivermeade whichis going out for publicconsultation, the areahas the capacity toaccommodate around139 additional residentialunits, which would bring thepopulation from 600 to around1,000.The council anticipates it will

take at least 20 years to realisethis level of development inthe rural village.

Located betweenSwords and Finglas, the plan hopes toimprove the linksfrom Rivermeade toboth towns andallows for phasedroad improvementsin tandem with thedevelopment of thearea. The LAP also

provides for the developmentof additional community facili-ties including additional schoolaccommodation as required to provide for the needs of this

expanding community. The council said it aims topromote and encourage thedevelopment of retail andcommercial services within anew village centre at a levelappropriate to serve the resi-dents of Rivermeade and itsadjoining rural hinterland. One of the more unusualaspects of the plan is topromote the development ofthis village as a ‘Low CarbonCommunity’.The plan divides the LAP landsinto 11 development areas toachieve all of those objectivesand it has been broadlywelcomed by local councillors.Cllr Darragh Butler (FF) particu-larly welcomed improved link-ages with Swords and said helooks forward to seeing acycleway and walkway fromSwords through Knocksedanto Rivermeade.

Malahide BridgeClub Issue MovesForward Members of Malahide Bridge Club, who are still experiencing majorissues when it comes to car parkingat peak times outside the club, mayat last get to see this problemresolved. The County Council haveagreed to facilitate a meetingbetween the principle users of thecar park. This meeting will be toidentify the ongoing issues that arearising, and to see if an informalagreement can be reached betweenall the parties concerned. This issue was first raised by CllrPeter Coyle (Lab) at a recentMalahide area committee, who saidthat the problem was causing a greatheadache to all of the club members. He said members had informed himof the difficulties some were having, and explained that this was because

the car parking was shared with thehockey and GAA clubs, who used theadjacent all weather pitches. “Some elderly members and thosewith limited mobility feel that theycould no longer continue to attend ifthey couldn’t use the car park, as itwould be extremely difficult for themto get to the club if they had to parkfar away. In keeping with the CountyCouncil’s Age Friendly County initia-tive, I really feel that the localauthority should be accommodatingand give them preferential treatmentwhen it comes to parking,” he toldthe County Leader. Cllr Coyle and all the members of theclub were extremely happy that thecouncil were responding to the issueand that some form of a remedy tothe problem was being offered. “TheBridge club is a popular, large andgrowing club (it is the second largestBridge club in the country) and it isimportant that all its members canadequately use the facility,” Coyleconcluded.

He told theCounty Leader: “While I can appreciatehow tight things are atthe moment in terms offunding, I was extremelydisappointed to see thatas were only in April, funding for this year hasbeen used up already. The fact remains thatthe unfinished path onBlackwood Lane inPortmarnock is hugelyhazardous to all pedes-trians and just cannot be

left this way.” “There isabout 150 metres of thatlane without a footpathat all,” he continued. “Alot of runners andwalkers would be usingthat each day and it isparticularly dangerousat night. Initially therewas an issue with the

North County Livingby Patrick Finnegan

Hitting TheRight Note

The hugely popular RTE Talent Show, The Voice ofIreland, always unearths exceptional singingtalent and, as a result of this year's show, it maywell be the turning point in the musical career ofBalbriggan man, Mark Guildea.Mark became instantly recognisable as he sanghis heart out on the popular show, with a series ofpowerful performances that ensured that heprogressed as far as the live shows. In the initialblind audition, where you are judged purely on thequality of your voice, Mark managed to convincetwo judges, Sharon Corr and Kian Egan to pressthe magical red button and turn their chairsaround. Mark, originally from Bath Road in Balbriggan, butnow living in Stamullen, told the County Leader: “Iwas really nervous and I became very worried halfway through the song, “Living for the City” byStevie Wonder, when none of the judges turnedaround. Thankfully, both Kian Egan and SharonCorr turned around and I chose Sharon to be mymentor.” He is now hoping that after some veryvaluable exposure, he can forge a singing careerfor himself.Mark is married to Allison and they have twobeautiful daughters, Kirsty, aged 15 and littleHolly, who is just two years old."My family have been mygreatest support and strengthand without them, I would notbe able to fulfil my dreams,"said MarkHe spoke about how hebecame involved in singing. “Iattended BalbrigganCommunity College and Istarted singing when I wasabout 15. At the time I wasreally shy and, even to this day,I find it very difficult to play tothree or four people ; I getreally nervous. However, put200 or 2,000 people in front ofme and I put on my stage faceand don't feel the nerves.""My school friends had a band and they told me Icould join them if I was able to get a bass guitar.Luckily, my father came to the rescue and I was in.I’ve always played in rock bands and I eventuallyended up in a variety of bands, including MiddleEast, Rock Monsters and Knuckle Head, to namebut a few. I then opened a recording studio inBalbriggan for three years, but due to the reces-sion, it didn't work out. I then opened a tattoostudio, which I had for seven years, but had togive that up when I broke my back and chest in aserious car accident."Mark intends to do some recordings and collabo-rations with some of the contestants on the Voice."I also have a guitar, which has been signed bythe contestants and judges, which I am putting upas a facebook prize. All you have to do is like myFacebook page, MarkGuildeaOfficial and then

share the video for the prize. I will pick out thewinner on 1st May."Mark doesn't fit the stereotype of a rock singer, ashe is a non-drinker, a non-smoker and has no timefor drugs. "I have to safeguard my voice and tokeep my 'Lion's Roar', as Sharon Corr dubbed it. Ican't afford to damage my voice by drinking andsmoking." Mark joined a rock band calledDalmatians in England and he toured many of therock venues over there. A very interesting thinghappened to him during his stint with the band."Around this time, Iron Maiden's lead singer,Bruce Dickinson decided to leave the band andthey set about looking for a replacement. I wasplaying in the Marquee in London and themanagement of Iron Maiden came to see the showand pulled me aside afterwards and we had ameeting. They loved my voice and everything wasgoing great. Then they asked me where I was fromand when I said Dublin, the meeting endedabruptly. They are a very British band and clearlydidn't want any outsiders to dilute their Britishethos," said Mark. There is a surprising other side to Mark's musicalinterests. "I absolutely adore Country Music andhave always done so. I particularly love modern

Country, and stars like BradPaisley, Dolly Parton, GarthBrooks, Alan Jackson and theMavericks are ones I look up to.In fact, when I stopped playingRock music about five years ago,I wanted to do Country music, with backing tracks. Countryforces you to listen to lyrics and Ithink Country is a mellowversion of Rock, he said.Soon after this, Mark decided togive music a break, but it wasn'tlong before the longing cameback. "I promised myself to getback singing and I have mydaughter. Kirsty to thank forinspiring me this time. She hadbeen speaking to career guid-

ance counsellors in school and I was giving heradvice on following her dream. She turned it allaround on me and asked, “What is your dreamjob?’ I was gobsmacked. I said I’d like to be asinger and she encouraged me to enter thecompetition. This is a real eye opener for me andeveryone in Balbriggan was very supportive anddelighted with my success,” he said. I have a fourpiece band and we have a few gigs lined uparound Balbriggan. I also have a project in thepipeline called, Naked Sessions, where I stripsongs right back to just guitar or piano."When asked where he sees himself in five years,Mark said, "I'd like to see myself gigging aboutthree to four times a week up and down thecountry, playing original songs and covers that Ilike, to a crowd that wants to hear me. That wouldbe really nice, as well as making a good living."

HOROSCOPES

AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18Problems relating to a financial issue or arrange-ment will surface early in the week, and youwould be wise to let the matter simmer for awhile longer before deciding what to do.Professional advice might be a good move.

PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20If criticism arises, view it as constructive and youwill be in a stronger position to influence andimpress later in the week. You are held in highregard, so do nothing rash to jeopardise yourreputation.

ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 20With confrontation focusing on relationshipsyou must avoid antagonising allies, rivals andopponents in the weeks ahead. The winds ofchange are blowing, but it is up to you to ensurethey blow in your favour.

TAURUS Apr 21 - May 20Don’t waste time on complex business plans, when the chances are that they will be over-taken by events shortly. Better to concentrateyour energy on something less demanding butmore immediately rewarding.

Gemini May 21 - Jun 20A business associate or loved one could suggestthat you are failing to live up to their own highstandards this week. It is more likely to be theirunrealistic expectations which are to blame.

Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 22Given that certain people are relying on you toprovide material, emotional or moral support, and that this is the perfect moment to provide it,do so now and you will feel better about havingfun later.

Leo Jul 23 - Aug 23You will be tempted to share a secret withsomeone you believe you can trust. Whether theconfidence is your own or someone else’s isimmaterial: the fact is that once it is aired it islikely to become public knowledge.

Virgo Aug 24 - Sep 22Relatives and loved ones are liable to beunforthcoming and uncooperative, and yournatural reaction will be to give them short shrift. It would be a mistake to say anything whichcould bring regrets or recriminations.

Libra Sep 23 - Oct 22Suddenly, your confidence will soar, and youwill take in your stride even those things whichseemed impossible a short while ago. However, you must be careful not to undermine the effortsof those around you.

Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 22Before you start sharpening your claws thisweek, spare a thought for someone who is stilltrying to come to terms with a recent disappoint-ment or loss. A week to show some compassionto one in particular.

Sagittarius Nov 23 - Dec 21Although you are constantly on the go, yourbacklog appears to be growing, and with it yourfeelings of frustration and guilt. However, with alittle patience you should be able to come togrips with most of your tasks.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19It would be a mistake to take anything at facevalue this week - especially on the home front. Itis what others do rather that what they saywhich will provide clues to their motives andintentions.

Your garden can bespruced up very easilytoo, simply by doingsome simple clean upsand adding some newplants and flowers.

Garden

Nothing says spring ishere like your garden. It’s time to dig out thosespades and shovels andreally make your gardenshine with some newplants and flowers. Forthose who like DIY butwithout as much hassle,it’s best to go and buyyour potted plants inyour favourite springcolours and plant themas they are. You will findall the supplies andmaterials you need inyour local hardwarestore so you won’t haveto go miles to spruce upthe garden. Even justcleaning up all theweeds and old plants willreally make a difference.

Bathroom

The same tricks can workwonders as well in thebathroom as in any otherroom of the house, sostart off by trying torefresh with little things. So, get your towelsupdated and see if it’dbe about time to getsome new, differentcoloured ones. Findsome matching storageboxes as that’s the onesure way to keep yourbathroom clean.Organise the thick andheavy toiletries behindthe shelves and replacethe products with lighterones. If there’s a littlewindow in your bath-room, try changing to anew type of glass if youfeel this is needed, oreven just place someornaments close to thewindow ledge.

Living Room

Spring brings peopletogether, so make sureyour living room is verywelcoming to family andfriends. Get rid of thethick and heavy cush-ions and replace themwith some smaller, lighter ones. Specsavers Balbriggan Hits The Right NoteThere was an air of excitement in Specsavers Balbriggan recently, as former star of theVoice of Ireland, Mark Guildea visited the store where he was fitted with two pairs ofdesigner frames. His chosen pairs were Jasper Conran and Quicksilver which SpecsaversBalbriggan was thrilled to present to him. Speaking about this exciting visit StoreDirector Brian Brodigan said “We were delighted to welcome Mark into the store as wefollowed him throughout his journey on The Voice of Ireland and we wish him the verybest of luck in his future singing career." SophisticatedDevices Now BeingUsed By Car ThievesA new scheme used by car thievesappears to be on the upsurge and carowners in the North County are beingasked to be particularly alert, especiallywhen locking your car in public places.A story about a motorist was received bythe County Leader and it gives detailsabout how sophisticated car thieves arebecoming. A reader alerted us about afriend of her’s who had a lucky escape. She said, “My friend locked her car in asouthside shopping centre and as shewalked away, she heard her car doorunlocking. She went back and locked thecar three more times. Each time shewalked away, she could hear itunlocking. She noticed two men sittingin a car nearby and they were watchingher intently. She immediately droveaway and alerted the Gardai.”The driver discovered that she was partof a very successful scheme being usedto gain entry to parked cars. Anotherperson had their laptop, sat nav andbriefcase taken, but when Gardaiarrived, there was no sign of a forcedentry.

Apparently there is a device that thievesare now using to clone your securitycode when you lock your car doors usingyour remote locking device. They sit adistance away and watch for their nextvictim. They know you are going shop-ping or to a restaurant and have enoughtime to steal and run.Gardai advise to always lock your carmanually with the key. This ensures thatthe next victim will not be you. When youlock with your key, it does not send thesecurity code, but if you walk away anduse the remote button, it sends the codethrough the airwaves, where it can beeasily intercepted by the device.

and colour choices. That includes thecurtains, bl inds andsuch but also in furni-ture. I f you have noneed to buy a totallynew sofa, you can

always get a new coverfor it to make it lookbrand new. You canalso update the wallpictures and otherpictures to suit the newseason of the year.

Bedroom

Scrutinise the room forobjects that appear to beunwelcoming or cold. Forexample, replace thecandle sticks that have awintry design for some-thing spring-like. Also getrid of all kinds of clutterthat you know won’t seethe light of day for ages.Remember the sun canmake your bedroom lookso much brighter andbigger too, so pull upthose blinds and let thelight in. Now is also agood time to change yourcushion covers for some-thing lighter, so you cankeep the oh-so-cosy andwarm coloured ones towait for next winter andget something lightinstead. Silk, cotton orlace, sunny yellow, freshgreen or sky blue, there’sso much to choose from.In the bedroom thecurtains have a massiveeffect, so change them tosomething to get you upwith the sunlight in themorning. Match themwith the cushion coversor go minimalistic, i.e.with some translucent

fabric, to create the airyfeeling and fresh look tothe room.

Decoration

Every year duringSpringtime, people getthis burst of inspirationand lots of new ideas, sogo with the flow andthink about points you’dlike to get changed themost in your home and

make it happen. Look atthe condition of yourfloors, windows, doors, walls and such. Ask for aspecialist (we haveplenty of them here inthe North County) to helpyou plan it if the projectseems too big to under-take alone.

Recycling Skips

So now, the plans have

been drawn, the painthas been bought, thekids are out and you’rearmed with hammer andbrush ready to go. Butwhat to do with thebroken floor tiles, thedamaged furniture, oddcuts of wood, bricks andblocks of differing dimen-sions and the varyingother objects which can’tbe conveniently thrownon the fire and the binmen aren’t around untilnext week, even thoughyour wheelie bin is over-flowing already. The solution is thehumble skip, being thatskips are the most envi-ronmentally friendly andtidiest method of wastedisposal for nonhazardous materials. You call the hiringcompany, their truckdrops the skip off, you fillit up, they pick the skipup, you wave yourrubbish goodbye, it’sthat simple. Recyclingcompanies that hire outskips are a great way toensure household wastecan be reused, thusbeing friendlier to theenvironment andproviding a cleaner,

convenient service. Skiphire companies willdeliver the empty skip, then remove the full skipto their depot to sortthrough the various bitsand pieces to seek out

and separate what canappear as a useablecommodity. It’s some-thing to bear in mind ifyou’re thinking of movinghouse or having ageneral clean up.
