The attendance included Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan TD and Cllr Monica Harford, who deputised for Cathaoirleach, Grainne Maguire. This one day event, which was free, was well attended by the public. The museum, a first of its kind for the area, gave visitors a chance to glimpse into the past with various objects and arte- facts on display. It featured cannon balls, fishing nets, whale bones and other items found by trawlers from Balbriggan in their nets down the years, as well as items from private collections. Schools and the community in general came out in force to view this unique glimpse into Balbriggan’s rich maritime tradi- tion. Trevor Sargent, Chairman of the Balbriggan Maritime Museum spoke of how the concept was initiated. “It came from the Economic Forum in 2010. One of the ideas floated was that Balbriggan should celebrate it’s maritime past.” He also urged Minister Deenihan to speak with Minister Leo Varadkar, with a view to getting funding for a permanent home for the museum. Minister Deenihan was full of praise for the venture. “This is a great local community initiative, which has come about through the local Chamber, County Council and Town Council coming together and co-oper- ating. You are doing something intrinsically important, by exploring your rich maritime tradition.” Chamber president, Joe English said: “It’s great to have the Minister in our town, at a time like this, when we need as much support as possible. Balbriggan is a fabulous town and we need to be proud of our place and showcase it to as many people as possible. He was also very aware of the impact that such a museum would have on the town. “This is a lynchpin oppor- tunity to increase footfall in Balbriggan, from areas far and wide. We have it all - this is just scratching the surface,” he concluded. Donabate are through to the quarter-final of TG4’s G-Team, the biggest Irishlanguage competition in history, aimedat getting the country speaking Irish, outside the Gaeltacht regions. Donabate overcame stiff oppositionfrom Castlewellan, Co. Down in thefirst round and now progress to thequarter-final. Initially Donabate wasone of over 100 applicants for thecompetition. This was later narroweddown to 12 for the first round. As wellas being the only town from the NorthCounty, Donabate are also the onlytown from Dublin to make it this far. For the first round, each town wasrequired to organise a ‘G-Day’ orGaeilge day. Every person in the townwas required to speak as much Irish as

possible, whilst going about theireveryday business. Donabate organ-ised a Mass, bus tour and a tour ofNewbridge House, as Gaeilge. While the main focus of the show is onthe use of Irish language, it is alsoabout giving small communitiesthroughout Ireland an opportunity toshowcase their towns and theirheritage. The eventual winners will take awayprize money of €40,000 to be used forpromoting the local area. We’re alllooking forward to the quarter-final,which will be aired on TG4 on Sunday,4th March at 8pm. We wish Donabatewell and know that they will do theNorth County proud agus beidh gachrud ceart go leoir.

It is the latest set-back the proposedCentre faces following a lengthy campaignwhich has drawn the support of politiciansand community activists around the NorthCounty. The Council, in responding to a motionbrought by a number of local councillors, said that the project's inclusion 'in the nextcapital programme would give the impres-

sion that the facility can be delivered in theshort term.' This, they claim, would raisefalse expectations that the Centre is likelyto be constructed in the near future andwould be unfair to the local community. Speaking to the County Leader, DermotO'Keeffe, a former campaigner andChairman of Brackenstown Community,Sport and Development Association said:“We've been told in the past that we aretop priority on the capital fundingprogramme for a number of years. Thislatest decision is disappointing, given thehuge need for the facility.”“Young people hanging around cornerswith nothing else to do, clubs and othergroups from everywhere could avail of such

a facility. You only have to look at the state-of-the-art plans for the project to see thebenefits.”“It is also really disappointing that otherprojects, such as the one down inApplewood, have been given the go-ahead.I'm a realist and, to be honest, I don't thinkthe funds will ever become available,” heconcluded. The Council's response was issued at aBalbriggan/Swords Area Committeemeeting on Thursday, 9th February, following a strongly supported motionissued by councillors - Darragh Butler(FF), Gerry McGuire (Lab), Tom Kelleher(Lab), Anne Devitt (FG) and EugeneCoppinger (SP).

Scoil Phadraic Cail ini inDonabate will be holding agala in March to raise fundsfor the school. Theycurrently need to raise about€60,000 which wil l gotowards building an exten-sion on their present schoolhall, which is currently fartoo small given the capacity

of students attending theschool. The hall currently holds 150at absolute maximumcapacity and the school hasover 420 pupils. While theschool has very varied andextensive extra-curricularprogramme for which the hallis used, the small size limits

their capacity to hold largerevents such as schoolconcerts, plays, recitals andso on. It ’s a very t ightsqueeze to accommodateparents at events. Also asclearly not all the pupils canfit at one time and assemblyetc needs to be run a numberof times to reach everyone. The school’s very activeparents’ association will berunning this year’s GalaDinner Dance, which will beheld on March 3rd in theWaterside Hotel in Donabate

Relief For Holywell ResidentsThe completion of the road distributornetwork in Holywell estate will routetraffic away from the residential core ofthe area. This will significantly ease thetraffic through the resi-dential area and providinga more appropriate routefor bus services. In welcoming the devel-opment, local deputy,Alan Farrell (FG) said:“This project, along withthe pedestrian/cyclingroute will mean a lot tothe residents in Holywell.I have been working onthis project since 2005, alongside theHolywell Residents Association whohave lobbied local councillors and theCounty Council on an ongoing basis, toensure that the completion of thedistributor road remained a priority. Farrell continued: “It was at the draftstage of the Fingal Development Plan

2011 – 2017 that I successfully passed amotion to ensure that the lands neigh-bouring Holywell could not be devel-oped until such time as the distributor

road was completed, andin doing so placed anemphasis on the futuredevelopment of theAirside Business andRetail Parks. “There are now varioussteps that will need to betaken to ensure that thescheme can go to tenderin 2012. The localauthority intends to

acquire land from the owner by agree-ment, and existing roadways will needto be taken in charge. Work will also berequired on the existing attenuatingpond in co-operation with the devel-oper. However, I very much hope thatthe Council will be able to ensure thetimely delivery of this road.”

Doling Out InformationAnd Advice

Next year, Joan Craig will celebrate 20 years voluntaryservice to the community in the Citizens InformationService in Swords. From when she started in 1993 todate, she tells the County Leader, the service providedhas come full circle.“When I began with the CIS we were just coming outof a recession, so the enquiries were predominantlyabout social welfare, and now we’ve been back to thatagain for the past couple of years. I started workinghere two years after I moved to Swords, when a friendasked me if I’d like to give volunteering a go.”“Back then everything was paper files, we had a bigfolder and if someone came in and asked questions, you had to sift through a huge file of notifications fromthe Department and find the relevant information forthem. It’s in my nature: I like rooting out information,I’m inquisitive, and I loved it from the start. ”Because there were lots of amendments relating tothe same thing, as a rookie Joan had to rummagethrough older paper files and weed out previous ones,so she had the most current entitlements to handwhen people asked.“At that time, the CIS also offered a financial serviceonce a month, and now that aspect is handled byMABS, and a free legal advice centre, which we stilldo. As in, we still offer the legal advice as a first port ofcall – our solicitors can’t take on a case for you, butthey can advise on who can best help you with yourcase. Lots of people just need tofind out if they actually have acase before engaging a solicitor ina lengthy procedure. So they willeither drop in or phone the officein the Plaza to make an appoint-ment with one of the solicitorswho are offering their skills andexpertise.”Being able to deal with distressedor anxious people is one of thecore qualities that has stood toJoan since her involvement withthe CIS began. Her experienceand training helps her to continueto meet the demands of the job, despite the challenges the recession brings to bear onit.“The bulk of the enquiries are about social welfareand as you can imagine, people are looking for asympathetic reception and an absolutely confidentialtreatment of the issue that’s worrying them. Somepeople come in worried about everybody knowingtheir business, but it’s something all the clerical staffdispels at once. Everything we do is done on anabsolutely confidential basis, we sign a confidentialityagreement, and we cannot discuss it outside theoffice. Everything in here is in the strictest of confi-dence.”Joan’s involvement over the past two decades meansshe is uniquely placed to see and adapt to thechanging needs of the voluntary aspect of communityservice. The tools may have changed but the skillshaven’t.“When I started there I hadn’t a clue how to turn onthe computer,” she smiles. “And from that throughthe training I’ve undergone, I feel I’ve personally got alot out of it.” Her on-site experience has been regu-

larly updated with formal qualifications such as theInformation Providers Programme, which she began in2007 and finished in April 2008. She was invited to complete the course by theservice’s development manager, and not only boostedher skills, but also gained a distinction in her finalexaminations.“It was one morning a week in the National College ofIreland, funded by Comhairle which funds the CISeach week. You had a different module, one week onemployment rights, another week family law. Therewas a written assignment every week, finishing upwith a computer proficiency exam and a more in-depth case study at the end of the course.“I really enjoyed it: I met people from all other centresaround the country, which meant we could go overeverything with volunteers and paid staff. I still did myvolunteering once a week and though I got a certainamount of satisfaction from the distinction grade, itwas the fact that I felt better equipped to give theinformation to our clients that made the extra workworth it.”The increased traffic through the office in recent yearsmeans that the clerical volunteers need to have morespecific knowledge, she explains, which is why shecompleted yet another course, this time on family lawand she’s founds it helps shape her response to someof the queries.

“The Family Law course I did dealtwith separation, mediation, chil-dren, maintenance and familybreakdown. It also covered someof the new things that have comein and how that has an impact onco-habitees.As an information assistant, you’veto always realise you’re not a solic-itor, you can answer the questionas best you can and know when torefer them on. You do them adisservice by not passing them onto more specialist knowledge, andyou can never feel that you know itall because you don’t.”

Joan’s also been appointed as a CIS board directorand as such is tasked with ensuring good governance.“That means we make sure that the funding we getfrom central government is used correctly, that allaccounts are properly done. We’d meet every sixweeks with issues that help the area developmentmanager in growing our services.”The service has already grown to encompass thepeople of Balbriggan, Skerries and Malahide, as wellas those living in Swords, so it covers a lot of groundgeographically as well as the types of issues encoun-tered. She’s quick to point out that people don’t justcome to them in a crisis. She’s made many friends over the years, specificallymentioning her former colleague, Ailish Bishop whojoined with her and only retired from the board ofdirectors last year. “It was sad to see Ailish go, she’llbe missed. Others I joined with have gone on to otherCIS offices or have moved from the area.”It’s a far cry from her first morning in the Portacabin bythe courthouse and she’s looking forward to manymore years of giving back to the community.

Estate Agents

In buying a new home, one of the first thingsyou need to do is tovisit the Estate Agent inthe area you wish tolocate to. Many estateagents do a lot morethan just sell homes ;they can offer servicesto you and guide youthrough the properfinancial channels. Setup a meeting with anestate agent and theywill talk you throughthe legalities of owning

a home. They will havea wide variety of homesat prices that will suityour budget. Inchoosing a good estateagent, you are gettingaccess to their wideportfolio of houses andthey are also in a posi-tion to negotiate agood price on yourbehalf. Employing theservices of an estateagent is a must.

Mortgage

Purchasing a home isthe largest single finan-cial commitment youwill make, so care isrequired in choosingyour provider.Remember, while thecurrent economic situa-tion persists, lendingagencies are reluctantto offer mortgages, soyou may have to waitsome time. A mortgage

can extend over thirtyyears of your life, making it crucial toresearch your optionswith an eye towards thelong term implications. The first step in theprocess is a thoroughevaluation of yourfinancial situation. Aclear picture of yourcredit standing andfinancial obligations, present and future, canhelp you decide whatsort of monthlypayments you cancomfortably afford, aswell as aid in deter-mining the amount youcan promise as a downpayment on your newhome. There are anumber of banks andbuilding societies whichcan offer reasonabledeals.

Solicitors

So if your thinkingabout buying thatdream pad and feel it’simpossible, think againbecause there are waysand means to suit everydream and pocket.Although there is plenty

of information on theinternet where homescan be viewed, it’ssometimes best to havethe personal touch. There are many excel-lent solicitors in theNorth County, who willhelp you on your roadto that front door youcan call your own. Itmay seem like there isso much involved inbuying a home, butonce you start theprocess, it will becomeclear to you what’swhat and you find your-self doing all thingsthat are essential. Yoursolicitor who will thentake you step by stepthrough the legalities. With this expert advice, take it bit by bit andowning your own homecomes to fruition.Looking over contractsis something for theprofessionals, so youwill definitely need asolicitor to ensure thatall the legal ends aretied up.Seeking advice offriends and family canbe good too. However, depending on how long

it is since they havebought a property, theiradvise may not be asup-to-date as you need. There are lots of thingsthat are involved so it’sgood advice to put aplan in place.

Security

Once you have chosenyour first home andhave moved in, it is

vital to make sure thatyour new property iswell protected.Remember that you willbe moving all yourbelongings, as well aswedding presents, ifyou have recently tiedthe knot. Making surethat everything is safeand secure, particularlyyourself, is of para-mount importance. Intimes of recession, it iswell known that

burglaries increase. With this in mind, it isvital to get a goodsecurity system andalarm, that will give youpeace of mind, as wellas security. HOROSCOPES

AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18You’re not keen on change, and even unhappierwith others making decisions on your behalf. Infact, this week, you’re likely to be fuming. However, if you keep calm you might see thegolden opportunities involved.

PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20Even in the most gentle of Pisceans there is astubborn streak that stops you giving up hopewhen it comes to long-cherished goals. But indi-cations are - that with one particular goal - thatis exactly what you must do.

ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 20Accept that things simply aren’t going to go theway you expected and life becomes easier.Certain individuals want their way, and couldcreate hell if not satisfied. Be patient for now -your time will come very shortly.

TAURUS Apr 21 - May 20This is your week when good ideas will abound,or previously good ideas get better. However, the problem lies with others. You’ll need all thefacts and figures. Appea-ling offers alone won’tconvince banks or investors.

Gemini May 21 - Jun 20This hardly seems the ideal time to review theway you use your resources. But the insightstriggered by planetary movement this week aredeeply stirring. So much so, you realise thatchanges require considerable thought.

Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 22Nobody would accuse you of being rigid in yourthinking. But there are certain habits that youcling to - especially when it comes to security, pleasure or control. Be prepared - all three areabout to be shaken this week.

Leo Jul 23 - Aug 23You know that time spent on petty disagree-ments is time wasted. But others don’t, theyinsist on dissecting issues, though, there is somuch that is more pressing. However, you feelthat you should at least show an interest.

Virgo Aug 24 - Sep 22It will become apparent that if you don’t take astand on certain issues, then others are going tocontinue as if everything was just fine. And whatappears relatively unimportant now couldbecome a real problem later.

Libra Sep 23 - Oct 22Few things are more pointless than arguing withthose who won’t consider any viewpoint buttheir own. Normally it would be wiser to walkaway. But it might be of benefit for you to listento what they have to say.

Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 22While you’ll have plenty of opportunity tovanquish past foes this week, it is important tokeep the future in mind. In fact, you’ll want toact swiftly in response to revelations that accom-panies a particular conversation.

Sagittarius Nov 23 - Dec 21Having already committed to a project, you’reunlikely to welcome the further changes usheredin this week. But, once you’ve calmed down, yourealise that these are what previous shifts werepreparing you for.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19Whether unappealing circumstances orunscrupulous people are the cause, you’rebacked into a corner - and not too happy aboutit. Added to this, you can’t discuss problemsopenly. Best keep a low profile for a bit.
