The garden will be located right beside the old Carnegie library on Strand Street and work has already commenced on it. President of Skerries Chamber of Commerce, Martin Scully spoke about how the project came about. He told the County Leader . “The Chamber leased the land, known as the Floraville site from the County Council and decided to plant a community garden here. It depicts life in Skerries. One side of the garden will encapsulate the harbour and the other will be of the old village. There will also be a ‘living wall’, with flowers in the colours of the local sports clubs and the garden. It will provide a wonderful amenity and will be used by the entire commu- nity,” he said. Scully said, “This site has been lying idle for the past 30 years. There’s terrific support for it from all walks of life in the town. It will encourage business and change the dynamics of the town and is certain to be a great help to the Tidy Towns committee. We hope to have it completed by late summer this year and we are all looking forward to it,” concluded Scully. This Floraville site was originally earmarked for an extension to the library. The site was acquired by the then Dublin County Council in the early 1980s for this purpose. Detailed plans and specifica- tions for this library were drawn up and approved in 1987. However, it was not possible to proceed with this project, due to the suspen- sion of the libraries devel- o p m e n t programme for lack of neces- sary funding. Many locals will wonder why the library has disappeared off the radar of the Council. Neighbouring towns, like Balbriggan and Rush have state of the art libraries, but facilities in Skerries are practi- cally non-existent. An artist impression of the new Community Garden in Skerries Huge Support For Skerries Community Garden The decision of the County Council to grant planning permission for the construction of a new petrol service station on North Street in Swords, is set to have a dramatic effect on the town. It is expected that the new service station, with accom- panying retail and food area, will be ready for busi- ness later this year. The local authority has granted permission to Applegreen to built a new service station and retail area on the site of Des Darcy Motors on North Street. This new facility will cover an area of 422 square metres, comprising six new petrol pump islands and canopy cover, with the construction of three 40,000 litre underground fuel tanks. Also included will be a comprehensive car wash facility and a retail unit with a drive through fast food facility. In it’s summary when granting planning permission, the local authority felt that the “Retail element will be of a nature that would of benefit, by reason of supporting general economic and social activity in the area.” Locals feel that the granting of permission for this service station will add new impetus to this side of the town, and particularly to North Street. The improved footfall and increased general activity is likely to be welcomed by most people. There had been a lot of criticism of the area from some local councillors, who felt that the North Street area of the town had been neglected and needed a facelift, particularly near the council offices. Tony Lambert, CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber was very upbeat about the news. He told the County Leader, “We welcome the development of a new service station and the accompanying facilities in North Street. This will add new commercial life to North Street, which is badly needed in the area,” he said. There are many advantages to the building of the new service station, like the generation of new jobs in the construction phase, as well as more perma- nent ones upon comple- tion. However, many will have concerns about the future of adjoining retail businesses in the area. This may well counteract the positive news on the job creation of the project. There is the distinct possibility that livelihoods may be affected by such a devel- opment, with the likely problems for the newsagent and off licence in the area. As this is the site of a previous filling station, for many it will mean the restoration of normal service. With the closure of the Esso Petrol Station on Rathbeale Road, many believe that a need exists for such a facility. Others are fearful of the increased traffic flow along the Balheary Road, as motorists and shoppers access the area from the northern part of town. A spokesperson for the company told the County Leader, “We are delighted to confirm Petrogas Group Ltd. has been granted Planning Permission for an Applegreen branded station at North Street Swords. It will be another three or four months before all permits are obtained and construction can commence. Hopefully, late September/ October 2013 should see us trading in Swords,” she concluded. A Trip DownMemory LaneWith their big day now almost upon them, it was timefor Warren and his fiance, Chris to catch up with someold friends, prior to their big day on the 16th of themonth. They met up in Peacocks in River Valley toreminisce and go over some nervous, last minuteproblems that may arise on their wedding day, including the roles of groomsman, best man andothers. After the antics of last week in the gym, this particular gatheringof friends posed no such threat to Warren and Chris’s relationshipand they knew they were on safe ground, despite the fact thateveryone, including those present had, at some stage in the pastfancied the gorgeous Chris. They are all part of the football team, with Warren as their captain and leader. The recalled how Chris always caused a commotion when shetogged out for the local camogie team. She was a knock-out inevery respect, both as a physical powerhouse, where sheterrorised her opponents on the pitch, and also her catwalk goodlooks, which drove many of the local young bucks wild with

desire. But it was dashing captain, Warren that swept Chris off herfeet. It must be said that Chris also had half an eye on gallantWarren. Afer all, he was the team captain - a leader of men, charging into battle with no regard for his own safety. Whatwoman wouldn’t be swept away. The group fondly recalled many of these tales of gallantry andlove and desire and about stories of old matches and other misde-meanours along the way It was clear that Warren and Chris, aftersome dodgy moments in the past, had an enduring relationship tostand the test of time. Next week: It’s stag and hen party time. Nothing can go wrong, orcan it?

Lusk CottageTo BecomeCommunity Facility

There has been a broad welcome for theupgrade of ‘Devines Cottage’ in the square inLusk. The Council have said they will turn it intoa community facility, capable of holding 50people, alongside 18 car spaces. Chairperson of Lusk Tidy Towns, Pat Kelly wasdelighted with the news, and hoped the renova-tion of the cottage would help increase theirpoints in this year’s Tidy Towns competition:“It’s fantastic that Devines Cottage will finallybe getting a revamp,” she said. “The Tidy Townsgroup painted the outside of the cottage lastyear, so I think its fantastic that the communitywill soon be be able to use it and that it won’tsimply be just left there.”

“The square is very much apart of Lusk,” shecontinued. “So it will bewonderful to see that thearea in particular gets alift.” The Tidy Towns groupare currently preparing fora busy year ahead and theiractivities are set to beginagain in March. “I’m hopingthat Tidy Towns will also goup a few points this year

thanks to the work being done on the cottage,”she continued. Local councillor, Tom O’Leary (FG), is also fullysupportive of the plans. He told the CountyLeader: “I welcome any further investment incommunity facilities in Lusk. It will be veryaccessible for all local community groups in thetown. Campaign To Reinstate Balbriggan Train Service

Newly elected chairman of the Balbriggan GreenParty, Joe O’Brien has called on Irish Rail to reinstatethe recently cancelled rail services to and fromBalbriggan. He has written to CEO of Irish Rail,Richard Fearn outlining the unfairness of the cancel-lation and the damage it will do to Balbriggan.Speaking to the County Leader, O’Brien said that hewanted a number of questions answered and saidthat the services must be reinstated for the better-ment of the local residents. “It was stated in an IrishRail press release that the decision to cancel thisservice was following public consultation, but I’m aregular user of this commuter line and I recalled norequest for the public’s input on these changes, so Iwant to know how and when this was carried out,”he said. “Balbriggan has an extremely high popula-

tion growth rate and needs more transport infra-structure - not less. The town has long been

neglected in terms of investment in proper publicservices and infrastructure, and this move furtherconfirms the view of the local people that their needsdo not count. There is much dissatisfaction among allaffected, not only because this crucial service havebeen cut, but also because there was no warning or

proper consultation prior to the decision being made.I’ve asked the CEO of Irish Rail to give seriousconsideration to reinstating these services as soonas possible and will be campaigning at Balbriggantrain station to further emphasise the importance ofthis,” he concluded.

Portmarnock SingerHopes For ‘Voice’SuccessLocal man, David Merriman from Portmarnockhopes to go far in the latest series popular talentshow ‘The Voice Of Ireland.’ David was on ourscreens on Sunday, 27th January last for theblind auditions and caused a stir when he sanghis fantastic version of Chris Isaac’s “WickedGame,” causing all four judges to push theirfamous buttons at the same time! After some friendly enough banter between thejudges, David said that he almost got Kian Egan’s shoe thrown at him after admitting he wasn’t

Westlife’s biggest fan. “Kian saw the light sideof things, I think,” he told the County Leader.“The reason I didn’t choose him was simplybecause the kind of music I made would becompletely different from the Westlife sound. Iwas torn initially, between Sharon and Bressie, but felt that Bressie and I would work the besttogether.”“Obviously I was thrilled that they all enjoyed

my performance so much and I’m so excited tosee what happens next,” he continued.David is well and truly a veteran of the musicbusiness at this stage, having started studyingsinging at the age of 16 with his uncle andrenowned singing teacher Frank Merriman. Hethen formed the band Exit, with two of hisbrothers and they had great success on the Irishmusic scene, with a tour around Ireland andtheir self-release single “Me and God.” Keepingup the momentum, the band then headed overto the USA and after a record deal attempt, a lineup change and a successful tour, David andsome of the other members spent a few busyyears travelling back and fourth to LA. Eventuallyhe decided to move back to Ireland with his wifeand their four daughters and have been heresince March last year. After a much needed six month break from themusic business, David decided to try out for theVoice of Ireland and successfully passed theblind audition stage. Now he says he’s justexcited to see what happens next. “I’m sochuffed with how things have gone and I can’twait to see what comes next.” We wish David thevery best of luck.

DON’T MISS OUT

McKeon BemoansEnd Of CivicLeadershipBalbriggan based County Councillor, MayMcKeon has spoken out about the loss of civicleadership which will accrue as a result of thedemise of BalbrigganTown Council. The Town Council ,which has been inexistence since 1860,when it operated as aTown Commission, isset to be abolished aspart of the Departmentof the Environment’sreform measure enti-tled, ‘Putting PeopleFirst’ . Cl lr McKeonfeels that local government needs to be at alevel where locals can have more of an inputinto decision making that affects them. Shetold the County Leader, “The idea of havingincreased representation on Fingal CountyCouncil, from 24 to 40 is ridiculous. Thereseems to be more emphasis on representationthan on the administration of the area. Theidea of having 40 councillors meeting in CountyHall, with a CEO instead of a County Manager, lowers the status of the entire local democraticprocess.” She asks if the CEO will be an execu-tive to the full council only and will there bedesignated executives for each municipal area,or is it going to be just more of the same?”

She would be in favour of having the ninecouncillors representing the new BalbrigganMunicipal District, which will include the neigh-bouring towns of Skerries, Rush, Lusk and therural villages, meet at Balbriggan Town Counciloffices. “This would make sense. The only wayto maintain local democracy is to bring thelocal people to the meeting and to operate thearea they represent. They’re trying to putpeople first, but there’s nothing to indicate anopportunity to give locals a chance to partici-pate, because they’ve taken local participationaway,” she said. She wants to see evidence of the anticipatedreform, which will bring power and participa-tion to a more local level. “People want to seethat their opinions count. We need civic leader-ship and not dictatorship and we need thisleadership at local level. This is exactly whatwe had as a Town Council. Unfortunately, itlooks like we’re being subsumed into a widerdecision making process at the expense oflocal needs. I’ve already sent a submission tothe Minister, but there’s no evidence that anyof the recommendations were taken intoaccount,” she said.Cllr McKeon was anxious to know about whatarrangements will be in place to guarantee thatthe Town Council offices will remain in thehands of the people of Balbriggan.“Unfortunately, we’ll miss the opportunity tohave interaction with state agencies, like BusEireann or the Department of Education, whocould relate to us on a local level. We, as alocal community, must make sure that we don’tlose out on the wider administration, which willdetract from local democracy.”She concluded by saying, “I don’t think thatthe motto for the new reforms, ‘Putting PeopleFirst’, is living up to it’s name.”

An allotment scheme forMalahide was tentatively proposed last year andthe scheme plans went on public display during2012, so residents will be delighted to finally getconfirmation for the project. Asked for a timescale on the project by Cllr PeterCoyle (Lab), the Council said the allotmentswould be going ahead, but have yet to provide adefinitive start up date for the project untildrainage works on the proposed site arecompleted. “It is intended to provide allotments atWheatfield in Malahide in 2013 subject to theresolution of a number of issues on the site,”said a member of the local authority. One of the most identifiablebuildings in the NorthCounty has recentlychanged hands. The ThatchCoffee House on LowerMain Street in Rush isinstantly recognisable, withit’s blue exterior wall andtraditional thatched roof. Ithas always been a verypopular venue, where localsand visitors are drawn to itby it’s olde world charm. With it’s sense of history, combined with an ambience

that encourages relaxationand the perfect place tomeet friends, the ThatchCoffee House is the idealplace to unwind. Newowner, Carl Oppermann isdetermined to continue thegreat service for which theThatch is renowned. Carl, who lives in Swords isdeeply rooted in the hospi-tality business. He is anephew of renownedrestaurateur, JohnnyOppermann, formerly

catering Manager and chefin the old Dublin Airportalso Oppermann’s CountryClub Hotel in Kilternan, where Muhammad Slistayed in 1972 and morerecently Johnny’s inMalahide.Carl is a highly qualifiedchef and he has justreturned from the CulinaryOlympics in Germany, where he was on the Irishteam. “We collected Gold,Silver and Bronze medalsand we also participated inthe 2008 Olympics,” saidCarl. Manager of the Thatch,Caroline Hand lives inDonabate and is also ahighly qualified chef, havingworked in Lukas Restaurantin Swords and has beenworking with Carl for thepast six or seven years.Indeed, their working rela-

tionship reflects a wealth ofexperience in the culinarybusiness. Carl explained,“My last job was as HeadChef in the Botanic Gardensand Caroline worked withme there. Previous to this,we we did corporatecatering at various bigevents and festivals likeElectric Picnic, the SolheimCup and the Irish Open Golftournament. We have anoutside catering business, which is very large. This iswhere we come to people’shomes and do the cateringfor events, like HolyC o m m u n i o n s ,Confirmations, Christeningsand other large family gath-erings,” said Carl. He wenton to explain that there hasbeen a change in the waypeople like to entertain.“Over the past few years, people like to stay at home, and that’s where we comein.” He told me about howhe came to own this lovelybuilding. “We had beenlooking at a few places andwhen the Thatch came onthe market last February,we loved it immediately andfell for it’s alluring charms. We settled the deal just twoweeks before Christmasand got the keys onChristmas Eve. It was anopportunity not to bemissed. It needs sometender loving care, and weare determined to put ourmark on it,” said adelighted Carl. They opened for businesson 3rd January, after aholiday period of cleaning, decorating and getting the

place ready. Carl explainedthe plans for the Thatch. “Atthe moment, we serve greatBewley’s coffee, breakfasts, snacks and sandwiches forlunch. On 7th February, weplan to start back on ourevening business. We’ll beopen on Thursdays, Fridaysand Saturdays from the 7th.We have a dinner menu puttogether, as well as anexciting menu for StValentine’s evening.”Carl and Caroline are verydefinite about their missionstatement and how theysee the Thatch evolving.“We aim to provide qualityfood at an affordable price. We want to provide anunforgettable eating experi-ence at great prices, servingsimple, but delicious food, where people can have atwo or three course qualitymeal at prices they canafford. One of our speciali-ties is our Oppermann’sSeafood Chowder, which isa delicious, hearty meal in a

bowl, providing great tasteand sustenance in ourharsh winter weather. Thisdelicious serving is a mealin itself,” said Carl, who hasalso had experience ofcooking in places likeFrance and Switzerland. The new owners are veryconscious about supportingthe local economy and theirfresh vegetables aresupplied by Keelings in StMargaret’s. Their fish issupplied by Gerry Gannonin Balbriggan and theirmeat comes from just upthe road in Co. MeathThe atmosphere in TheThatch is particularlyendearing and the intimatesize of the premises oozescharm and history. It is liketaking a step back to adifferent era, but with amodern twist. The Thatch isthe oldest two storiedthatch cottage in the NorthCounty and dates back to1760. It is thought to havebeen the home of the noto-rious smuggler, Jack theBachelor who plied histrade, pirating ships off theRush and Loughshinnycoast. One can almost feelthe sense of history in thisutterly charming place.Indeed Carl explained thatthere is a room upstairs thatremains closed and nobodyis permitted to enter thisroom, by order of theCounty Council, who havegiven the buildingprotected status.
