PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Welcome back to the 2018 school year, four terms, forty school weeks and another year of Normanhurst West PS providing quality teaching in a nurturing learning environment.

A very warm welcome to new Kindergarten families and new families from other grades.

Thank you for your assistance in helping our school to get off to a great start. Most children are settling well into the school routine. Morning assembly is for students and staff. We would now ask that parents say goodbye quickly and leave their children ready to line up when the bell goes. This makes it much easier for the children to be settled and the staff to convey messages. Also, a reminder no-one is to be in a classroom before school. Children are to hang up their bags and go directly into the playground where they are supervised from 8.30am.

‘Meet the Teacher’ night will be held on the evening of Tuesday, 20 February (times in above calendar section). The objective is for parents to meet with your child’s teacher to hear about plans for the year ahead. These sessions are not for individual parent teacher meetings, but for a more general information session about expectations, requirements and events for the year. However, you are most welcome to make an appointment to see your class teacher if you have any concerns. Your child does not attend this meeting.

Please continue to use the school app to maintain an up-to-date calendar and the ability to receive notifications when activities like excursions or carnivals are cancelled due to wet weather. If you search for Normanhurst West Public School in either store, you should find the app. Once downloaded you will need to use the username: community and password: normanhurstwps

As we start back for the new school year it may be timely to have some reminders regarding some school procedures:- Please label all uniforms, drink bottles, lunch boxes etc All notes and money (including sick notes) are either handed in directly to the school office or to your child’s teacher. Please ensure that all medications that are administered by office staff have a valid use by date. Finally, the Normanhurst West newsletter is undergoing a needed transformation. Deputy Principal, Mr Gibbons, has the assignment to seek community input to provide an effective newsletter. Your feedback will be further obtained through a community survey. The newsletter will be forwarded each fortnight to your provided email address and/or via the school App. Aim High! Greg McLaren, Principal.

KINDERGARTEN 2018

Students in Kindy are settling in well to their new classes. They have been working on learning the school routines. It has been wonderful to see them now playing alongside all the other Normanhurst West students during recess and lunch and making lots of new friends. In class they have been learning their letters, numbers and fine motor skills such as, cutting and pasting. Many are learning to follow simple instructions like pushing in their chairs, taking turns and sitting on the floor quietly.

YEAR 6 2018

As kindy begin their primary school journey the Year 6 students are now in their final year. They have been extremely diligent in class by getting straight into their learning. Being in Year 6, there are so many big events to be excited about such as, Kindy buddies, Year 6 Mufti Days, Farewell Dinner, fundraisers, school camp and Coffee Shop just to name a few. The year 6 leaders and students understand this is a big year, as they are viewed as role models of the school by all the younger students at Normanhurst West.

NEW TEACHERS AT NWPS

Normanhurst West teaching staff are extremely excited to be back at school. Although the holidays are great, we really enjoy being back in the classroom doing what we do best! The students being in their classrooms from week 1 has helped to create more settled classrooms. We look forward to seeing the students work their best throughout the year to achieve their academic and personal goals. We welcome Mr Evan Gibbons (relieving Deputy Principal), Mrs Grimshaw (rel. Assistant Principal), Ms Higgins, Mr Smith, Ms Malcolm and the return of Mr Vaughan.

PARENT INFORMATION Years 3-6 Swimming Carnival The swimming carnival is fast approaching. Please ensure all notes have been returned to your child’s classroom teacher. It is very important all notes are returned to ensure your child has been placed into their heats and has approval to swim. Library Please remember to send your child with their library bags on their library day. If your child still has any overdue books, please bring them in and return them to the library.

Home & School Communication It is also very important to communicate with the best person to help solve your questions. Teachers need to be informed of relevant information about the academic, social and developmental aspects of your child. This has to work the other way too for teachers to inform parents. Often our teachers will not be available for a lengthy meeting without it being scheduled. When delivering your child to school in the morning is not always the best time to approach a teacher for an interview, unless it is a wellbeing issue. All parents are encouraged to negotiate an appointment time with your child’s teacher or through our administration office. Alternatively, you may use the school’s email address [email protected]

Road Safety The students at Normanhurst West Public School learn about road safety at school. We also need your support. We hope that you can help to teach your children the correct ways of crossing the roads by using the pedestrian crossings and lights, especially around busy school areas.

Welcome Barbeque for Kindergarten and New Families Friday, 23 February, the staff will be hosting our annual 'Welcome to School BBQ' to welcome all kindergarten and new families into the school. It will commence at 7.45am and there will be a free sausage sizzle (with bacon and eggs), as well as refreshments. An invitation will be sent to the new families as well as kindergarten families. Bicycle Riding To and From School Students from Years 3-6 eager to ride to school need to approach the school’s Bicycle Education Officer, Mrs Power. Mrs Power will provide a safety induction or refresher tutorial. Then a permission note will be forwarded home. A permission note is required each year. Already this year a school parent has notified of a ‘near miss’ with one of our bike riding students. Scooters and skateboards are not allowed in the school. Parents accompanying younger bike riding students to and from school are exempt from seeking permission.

COLES SPORTS FOR SCHOOL PROGRAM NWPS P&C are participating in the collection of the Coles Sports for Schools Vouchers in 2018. From now until 3rd April 2018 every $10 spent at Coles (including Coles Express and Coles online – which receives an electronic voucher) will earn one voucher. The vouchers can be placed in the cardboard box located within the School Office up until 11th May. The P&C will then redeem the vouchers for sporting equipment, to be chosen by the school, for the children to use while at school. The sporting equipment to choose from includes brands such as Sherrin, Kookaburra, Steen and Nyda across many different sports. During the Woolworths Earn & Learn the community collected an amazing amount of sticker, let’s see if we can do the same with the Coles Sports for School Program. Thank you for supporting the P&C.

CANTEEN NEWS Welcome back to school for 2018 and another exciting year of Canteen at Normo Nibbles. We are looking forward to filling our students tummies with some healthy tasty treats and providing a little relief at home for parents from the lunch making task. We are especially excited to meet some new little faces of Kindergarten too. The weather is hot and we are already selling HUGE amounts of iceblocks and Slushies to get our year off to an amazing start.

At Normanhurst West, ordering lunch is exclusively done online via Flexischools. For those of you returning to school, please update your child’s 2018 class in the system and order

as usual. If you are new parent to the school and new to this format, please go to www.flexischools.com.au and search for Normanhurst West Public School. Follow the prompts for the set up. This process takes 3 minutes and is very simple to follow. Once you have completed this, begin your order. Select your chosen day, select your food/drinks and payment method and then place the order. You will be sent an email confirmation. It may feel a little daunting the first time you do this, but you will be pleasantly surprised at how quick and easy it is to order lunch in this fashion. You can place your order right up until 9.00am on the chosen day, or you can place an order, days and weeks in advance too. If you are not sure about items on offer, please drop by the Canteen and we can show you what is available and what it looks like. The pricing on our menu is current until the beginning of Term 2, 2018, when new pricing takes effect.

For Kindergarten children, this may be their first time at making a purchase completely solo. To assist this process, the window closest to the Dartford Rd entry, is exclusively available for our newest students. There is a sign on display to show them where to stand. Their Year 6 buddies will help guide them through the experience if required. Kindergarten traditionally catch on very fast and love it. Therefore I encourage you to please send along a few coins to spend. Canteen is a vital learning tool for them to have face to face purchasing/interaction, a little maths lesson and recognition of their coin values, all wrapped into one. There are plenty of options to choose from; they can buy something for as little as 10 cents and they will quickly learn their favourites. (Year 6 buddies helping with Kindergarten will be served at this window simultaneously) Again, if you are having trouble deciphering what’s offer from the cryptic

description you’re being given from your child, please come along to the Canteen and I will

show you.

Page 6: NORMANHURST WEST PUBLIC SCHOOL - … PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Welcome back to the 2018school year, four terms, forty school weeks and another year of Normanhurst West PS providing quality

As usual, we have all our regular tasty hot and cold food items for sale at the morning tea break. There is no need to order these, just come along and purchase what is available. Remind your children that all iceblocks and the big slushy are only available at lunch time.

The current Canteen volunteer roster is still in operation until the end of this month, so please refresh your memory with your Canteen date. The new roster will begin in March and if your haven’t locked in your spot to roll over to the new year, please email our Roster Clerk Karina

Sarris. Her email is: [email protected] We also have a Facebook page which you are most welcome to join (search Normo Nibbles) and this will keep you up to date and in the loop on all things going on with our school Canteen. If you are a parent wishing to volunteer in 2018 for the Canteen and haven’t done so before, the volunteer roster is included in this newsletter displaying the empty volunteer spots available. You can choose between 2 time slots (morning or afternoon shift) and is a once per month gig; sometimes even less. You can even share a spot with a friend and do alternate monthly shifts or even just volunteer your time for one of our event days this year (Cross Country Carnival, Athletics Carnival, Grandparents Day and Open Day). Occasionally due to illness there are even emergency spots available to help out and these are advertised via the school app or our Facebook page. There are plenty of options available and Canteen is an easy place to get involved at NWPS. Kids LOVE seeing their Mum or Dad helping out on Canteen and you get to see an insiders glimpse to what happens at school, especially during the breaks. Volunteering at the Canteen is super easy – That easy in fact, if you can make a sandwich and sell a Paddle Pop, your job is done. If you would like to talk to me about what is involved, please drop by the Canteen on either Monday, Wednesday or Friday.

The Canteen has a committee which you can also be a part of and we would love to see some new faces joining the team in 2018. At the end of last year, a few members moved on to high school with their children, so we are looking for some fresh faces to join in the fun. The Committee meets once per month for 20 minutes or so after service has finished. There, they discuss all things Canteen, make a few decisions, have some awesome cake and a big laugh. The committee is a fabulous bunch of women who love to chat about all things food related and much, much more. They are known to save the world from time to time from my standpoint and I couldn’t do my job without them.

The Swimming Carnival (Years 3-6) will be on Wednesday 28th February and the Canteen will be closed on this day, due to the reduced student cohort. This closure has been authorized by the School Executive.

Lastly, please remind your children that if there is ever any problem with their lunch order at all (something missing, wrong item/flavour), to please come up to the Canteen and see me and we can find a solution immediately. We try our best, but even as adults, we do manage the odd mistake from time to time. I’m pretty lucky that all of my customers are super forgiving when it comes to minor problems.

We are looking forward to another blockbuster year of Canteen at Normo Nibbles and I thankyou in advance for your continued support.

Jenny Sorkovsky. Canteen Manager
