Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Carers, Return to School Please find below a few reminders to promote the health of all members of our school community:

Please send your child/ren to school with a drink bottle each day, as students should only access bubblers

as a means to refill drink bottles, not to drink directly from.

Please minimise visits to the school site and observe social distancing at all times whilst on site.

If you have an enquiry and it can be made via telephone or email, please use this means to communicate

rather than visiting our office.

Please do not send your child/ren to school if they are unwell and do not enter the school site if you are

unwell.

Tree Work

In the last couple of weeks we had an arborist complete our annual tree inspection. As a result of this, we had

some work completed in relation to a number of our trees. Yesterday a tree near our main entrance was removed.

Thank you for your cooperation over the last few days with different access arrangements to enter and exit the

school whilst we awaited the completion of this work.

Opportunity Class 2021

This week all Year 4 students received an information letter about the Opportunity Class application process.

Please remember that all applications must be completed by Friday 26 June. The High Performing Students Unit

will not accept late applications. The online application can be accessed at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-

schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 from next Tuesday 9 June.

Bathroom Renovation

I am excited to announce our K-2 toilets will be renovated through a Department of Education funded project,

commencing next week. It will be absolutely fantastic to have brand new facilities for our students. Because this

project will take some time to complete, it is not possible for it to be done entirely within a holiday break period.

The work period will run through the rest of term and the holiday break, as well as into early Term 3. We have

arrangements in place to enable all students to still have ready access to bathroom facilities during this time. As

I have said with all of the projects undertaken to improve our school, keep in mind that the long-term benefit

outweighs the short-term inconvenience.

Kindergarten 2021

Unfortunately we are not able to hold our Kindergarten 2021 Information Session this term. We will be holding a

session next term on Tuesday 18 August. Please add this date to your diary if you have a child commencing

school next year and please pass this information on if you are aware of a neighbour or friend who does. Prior to

the session next term, please contact our Administration Office on 9489 1152 or via email at normanhurs-

[email protected], and they will arrange to post an information package to you.

Pick-Up Zone: Please use Surname Labels

To make collecting your children from our pick-up zone more streamlined, we issued all parents with a surname

label for their vehicle. This can be kept in the glove box or similar and displayed on the windscreen when you are

accessing the pick-up zone. In this way, the staff member on duty will be able to quickly see who has arrived and

ensure these students move to the vehicle from the waiting area inside our fence. We encourage you to use

these labels as it enables vehicles to move through quickly, which makes the process of collecting children easier

for all parents.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

During this fortnight all classes are revising expectations for our playground and how our three values relate to

this setting. The Week 5 recipients of our PBL draw were Gabriel E, Harry P and Hunter S.

Merit Certificates

Congratulations to the following students who received a merit certificate last week:

Library Matters As the gloom of winter encroaches upon us, it is the perfect time to add a splash of

colour and fun to our lives by borrowing a great book from the library.

This week I have some new and entertaining junior fiction books to share with you.

The Colouring Competition by Heath McKenzie is my favourite new addition. The

illustrations are almost a story in their own right, and repay the reader’s close attention

with lots of fun surprises. My son adored this book.

Ribbit Rabbit Robot by Victoria Mackinlay and illustrated by Sofya Karmazina, is a

delightful and entertaining fable about kindness, the dangers of greed and always

reading the fine print. Find out what happens when a friendly frog, a greedy rabbit and

a robot with a short fuse discover a magic lamp…

The Bassinis are BIG. The Bassinis are Burly. And the big, burly Bassinis are… BAD!

Very very bad. They are the baddest dogs in town. But

strange things start to happen when they meet a little puppy

who won’t be pushed around. Borrow The Big Bad Bassinis

by Clair Hume and Tom Jellet to discover who comes out on

top.

Last week was National Reconciliation week, and I have two stunning new books by

Indigenous authors to share with you.

Respect by Aunty Fay Muir and Sue Lawson and beautifully illustrated by Lisa Kennedy

is a warm and gentle story that shows what respect looks

like for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We

also have Coming Home to Country, a visual and lyrical

depiction of coming home to country from acclaimed

author and illustrator Bronwyn Bancroft.

Next week I will take a look at some of the new and

interesting non-fiction books that have wandered into our

library in the last few weeks.

Uniform Shop News

In order to adhere to social distancing measures in the shop, we will continue to operate by appointment only

until further notice. Appointments are available for those wishing to try uniforms for size, or to access the second-

hand clothing pool.

Appointments can be booked using the following link: https://signup.com/go/cmDYUyW

If you already know the size and items you require, please send us an email with your completed order form and

proof of payment. The order form can be found here: http://www.npspandc.com/uniform-shop/. Orders will be

packed on Friday and distributed to your child’s classroom for them to bring home.

Pre-loved Donations

We are still accepting donations to our second-hand clothing pool. We are in particular need of long-sleeve shirts

and girls winter tunics/trousers, but all donations are gratefully received. Please leave your items at the school

office. We ask that all donations are in good condition, freshly washed and please remove/scrub through any

names. We are unable to accept items that are not school uniform. Your donation not only helps the school

community, it also helps to keep clothing out of landfill and reduces the consumption of new items. Thank you.

Returns Policy

If you are unsure of size or the item required, we ask that wherever possible you make an appointment to try

before you buy. We appreciate that sometimes the wrong size will be purchased and we are happy to exchange

for another size.

On the rare occasion that an item just isn’t suitable for your child, we can issue a store credit that you can use

against future purchases. Unfortunately we are unable to provide refunds.

In order for a return or exchange to be accepted, the items must be returned within 28 days and be unworn,

unwashed and in the original wrapping with all tags still attached. We ask that you let the shop know (by

email) that you intend to exchange/return the item and provide date of purchase.

Unfortunately we cannot accept any return or exchange of hats, or socks and stockings (unless unopened) due

to hygiene reasons.

Faulty/defective items can be returned anytime within the warranty period (usually 12months) and will be returned

to the manufacturer for repair.

We thank you for your understanding.

P &C News Our AGM will be held in Term 4 but it’s time to put the word out and get some interest in committee roles for the

2021 year.

With great sadness, I announce my intention to stand down from my role at this year’s upcoming AGM. I have

very much enjoyed my tenure as President and have been very fortunate to have such a great team to assist me

in delivering much needed energy to the projects we have achieved. A few highlights for me have been the

installation of the security fence, breaking the $10k fundraising goal at Trivia Night last year, seeing the lower

playground astroturf and equipment installed, hosting our first Plant a Tree Day and securing the grant money to

put towards having our top oval resurfaced (which will happen soon), improving the band/P&C relationship and

seeing our uniform shop become a managed role. I stepped into this role without any experience at managing a

committee and it has been both personally and socially rewarding. On reflection, one of the best things I’ve ever

been involved in, it’s amazing to consider how much our team has achieved over this year and a half so far. I

look forward to seeing what the future brings.

Expressions of interest in committee roles are encouraged, we have a welcoming and positive group of parents

who work to improve our school through fundraising and applying for grants on behalf of our community. Most

positions have no pre-requisite, just enthusiasm and a will to learn. If you would like to be our next Treasurer,

bookkeeping or accounting skills beneficial.

If you are interested in being a part of this project, please be in touch with me,

[email protected]

Thank you to everyone who has assisted, encouraged and supported our P&C during my Presidency. We really have a great community and I hope the new committee can continue the same zest and positivity that I have strived to achieve in my role. To submit a recipe for our Normanhurst Public School Cookbook, please email [email protected]. Thank you to everyone who has forwarded donations to our fundraising account in lieu of participation at fundraising events.
