PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear Parents and Students,

Thank you to all of the families who were able to attend the Meet the Teacher evening on Tuesday night where the class teachers were able to explain the programs they will be implementing in their classrooms this year as well as lots of other procedures that pertain to their class, stage and the school. There has been a lot of positive feedback about the meetings and it is hoped that everyone went home with a better understanding of what is happening in the classroom as well as rules that apply around the school. Following this, there was a fantastic turnout of parents at the P&C meeting where those in attendance were able to hear about all of the things the P&C does for the school as well as finding out how they can be involved with helping the P&C.

Speaking about some of our school rules, I would like to remind everyone about a few rules which are important for the safety of everyone. The staff carpark is not to be used by any parent driving in there between the hours of 8.00 am and 4.00 pm. When walking your children to and from OOSH at any time, please walk along the side of the driveway and not down the middle as there are some blind spots and drivers may not see you until it is too late. Also, no adult is to use the toilets that are designated for the children at any time during the day. If you must use a toilet whilst on the school premises, please use the adult toilet near the library. Finally, as per departmental policy, no animals are allowed on school premises at any time. If you have a pet that you walk with when dropping off or picking up your child/ren, the pet must stay outside the school boundaries. Thank you for your consideration with these rules.

2019 school captains and prefects were joined by house captains in being presented with their badges at today’s Student Leaders’ Assembly. We also recognised one person from each class who will be part of our Student Representative Council. This group will be influential in formulating ideas to improve the school and raising money for charity. Congratulations to all students involved.

Summer PSSA sport began last Friday for about 120 very excited children representing our school for the first time. Stage 2 had a skills session with the AFL and NRL coaches last week and will begin matches tomorrow. All matches will be played at Pennant Hills Park. Stage 3 began their matches last week and had some excellent results against Epping North. Tomorrow they are playing against Pennant Hills at Campbell Park.

Next Wednesday, 27th February our annual Swimming Carnival will be held at Hornsby Pool. All children in Years 3 – 6 and some Year 2 students will be attending. Lots of organisation is needed to prepare for the carnival. Thank you to Miss Foord, Miss Malcolm and Mrs Boustany who have been working hard to ensure the children have an enjoyable day. Thank you also to the parents who are able to assist as officials on the day. This is always a fun day and all parents of Years 3 -6 are welcome to attend.

Until next time.

PARENT INFORMATION

School Swimming Carnival

A reminder that the school canteen will be closed on Wednesday 27 February as the

majority of the school will be attending the school swimming carnival. Those students at

the swimming carnival may wish to utilise the canteen at Hornsby Aquatic Centre.

Clean Up Schools Day

Since 1992, school communities across

Australia have demonstrated their support in

caring for the environment by taking part in

‘Clean Up Schools Day’. On Friday 1st

March, NWPS will also be participating in

‘Clean Up Schools Day’. Students can bring

gardening gloves, as classes will be given

specific areas to clean up within the school

grounds. Only Year 6 will clean up along the

school perimeter along Dartford Road. For

this they will need to return the permission

note to their class teacher.

Scholastic Book Club

Book Club in 2019 is in need of a parent volunteer/s to help administer the program.

Orders are made online and require little administration. We are in need of assistance

when it comes to distributing the ordered books when they arrive at school and help in

preparing the catalogues before they go out to students. Book club helps generate reward

points which can be used to purchase literature for our Library. If you would be able to

assist please contact the school and/or our P&C who would be more than happy to have

you on board.

Driving Safely• Check all passengers

are buckled up.• Stick to the 40km/h

speed limit.• Always look out for

pedestrians, especially at crossings and intersections.

• Avoid U-turns and three-point-turns within the school zone.

• Look for buses pulling out and always pass a bus with flashing orange lights at 40km/h

Child Car SeatsIt is important your child is restrained in the correct child car seat for their age and size:• It is recommended to keep older

children in a booster seat until they are at least 145cm in height.

• A child that is correctly secured in an approved child car seat is less likely to be killed or injured in a crash than one who is not.

Walking to SchoolPlan your trip to school and use safe crossing locations if possible. Always hold your childs hand as they need help to spot dangers such as vehicles exiting driveways.

chool Zone Road SafetyS2019Remember! Road safety starts with you!

Drop-off and Pick-up TimeIf you are able to drop your children off quickly, consider using a No Parking or Kiss & Drop zone or drop them further down the road a bit and let them walk to the gate.

How to use a No Parking zoneA No Parking zone is a drop-off, pick-up location. Remember:• You can stop for a maximum of two

minutes in the zone.• The driver must remain within three

metres of their vehicle.• The driver must not leave their vehicle

unattended.

School is back! Here are some safety tips for driving and parking within school zones, as well as road rule information to help keep you and your children safe.

No Stopping and Bus ZonesNever stop in a No Stopping zone as you will obstruct sight lines for other drivers and pedestrians, which puts others at risk.Bus Zones are purely for the use of commercial buses and no other vehicles.See over the page for parking offences and fines around schools.

Parking Tips• Always follow the road rules. Remember,

road rules around schools are there to keep you and your children safe.

• If possible, make sure children exit your vehicle on the footpath-side or verge side when getting in and out of the car.

• Never stop on a pedestrian crossing or double park as you will obstruct sight lines for other drivers and pedestrians, which puts others at risk.

• Park safely, even if it means walking further to the school gate to drop-off or pick-up your child. It’s a great way to connect with your child before and after school (away from screens).

• Pick your children up five to ten minutes after the bell in the afternoon, to avoid the most congested period. Ask them to wait inside the school gate for safety.

• If you park across the road, walk over to meet your child. Never call them across the road to you.
