Principal’s Report Dear Parents and Carers,
Premier’s Spelling Bee
Last Thursday we held the school finals for the 2018 Premier’s Spelling Bee. All of the class finalists did a great
job and competed through several rounds with increasingly difficult words. I was very proud to see how well
our finalists performed and the great encouragement our students gave to them. In Stage 2 the Spelling Bee
winner was Artin K and the runner-up Julian N. In Stage 3 the winner was Jan A and the runner-up Ansh P.
These students will represent our school at the district final to be held early next month. Thank you to Ms
Grimmond for her coordination of our school event.

Education Week Open Day
We are looking forward to welcoming parents and visitors to our Open Morning tomorrow, Thursday 9 August.
There will be an opportunity to visit your child’s / children’s classrooms, to have morning tea with them and to
watch our band, choir and dance group students perform. The open morning commences at 9.15 a.m.
School Website
The Department of Education has changed all school websites to a new platform and our website transitioned
this week. Thank you to Mr Sheridan who has devoted considerable time and effort to organising content ready
for this changeover. Please be patient whilst we make a few tweaks to the content now that the changeover has
occurred.
Fun Run
Over the weekend several of our staff participated in the 7km Bay Run. We had beautiful weather for a morning
run and the encouragement and support of each other helped all of us finish the event. What a great staff team
we have at Normanhurst!
Positive Behaviour for Learning
During this fortnight all classes are revising expectations for our school bathrooms and how our three school
values apply when using these facilities.
Kind regards,
Amber Gorrell
Principal

During Week 1 of this term, three of our Year 6 NPS Band students attended the 6-day 5-night State Junior Music Camp in Narrabeen, run by the Department of Education Arts Unit. Thank you to the Band Committee for drawing this camp to our attention. Here is some feedback from the students:
Be Responsible. Be Respectful. Strive for Success.
“At State Music Camp there were 266 students from Years 5-8 who travelled from all around NSW. When we arrived, all the students auditioned for elective 1, and were allocated to 1 of 3 bands including the Grainger Ensemble (the one I was in) and the Lithgow Ensemble. For the second elective there were lots of choices including Musical Theatre, Horn Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Improvisation, and Composition. I chose Musical Theatre and we sang “You can’t stop the beat” from Hairspray. You learn a lot of things about what to do and what not to do in band. It was a great experience to work with different tutors who help and support you, and push you to improve. State Music Camp was a great opportunity and I totally think you should go if you have the opportunity.” – Courtney
“I really enjoyed State Music Camp. I got to experience interesting and fun opportunities. I was able to do the composition workshop where we worked with the famous Paul Jarmon. We worked as a group to write a piece of music based on the story of the trapped Thai Soccer players which we named “into the light”. Secondly, I was chosen to perform in the camp item Orchestra which supported the choir made up of all of the campers singing. In this Orchestra we were able to perform a Paul Jarmon work, ‘I can dream anything’, which had been commissioned and was performed for the first time by our Orchestra. My favourite piece was called Ederlezi, a Romanian folk song. I totally recommend applying for State Music camp because you learn so much to expand your musical experience!!” – Tom “State Music Camp was the best music making experience that I have ever had. It was very fun- a nice opportunity to make new friends, play the clarinet with other great musicians and beautiful tutors. First we got into a group for ensemble 1, based on the audition on the first day. I was in an ensemble called Grainger, named after a famous composer, Percy Grainger. Next there was an ensemble 2 where I played with the Double Reeds and Flutes. After all the music making we got a treat... recreation activity! The activities that I did were flying fox and initiatives. The best part of camp was that I played in 'camp item orchestra' that accompanied the singers. The famous Paul Jarman conducted us. We played his piece 'I can dream anything' and 'Ederlezi'. I loved both of them! I was super lucky to be given a solo which was very exciting. And for the first time I was the concert master. I got to stand up on the podium and tune everyone. It was a great experience. I really enjoyed it and I would love to go back there again!“- Lara

P&C Meeting
Thanks to everyone who came along to last night’s meeting. It was lovely to welcome back some old faces and to see so many Kindy parents. A special thanks to Melissa L. who spoke to us about the campaigning that she has been doing on our behalf about the perimeter fence.
Open Morning
Thanks to all the staff and volunteers who are helping with the preparations for the Education Week open day. A special thanks to Lisa P. in the canteen who is providing morning tea for hungry parents as well as for our NPS students. I can’t wait to see all the wonderful work that goes on in our School!
Be Responsible. Be Respectful. Strive for Success.
Perimeter Fence
At last night’s meeting we were reminded of the importance of standing together as a community to make our voices heard. In the coming days we will post a template letter on the P&C website which you are welcome to use when contacting our local MP.
P&C Membership
At last night’s meeting I was reminded that, in order to vote on motions put to the meeting, you need to be a member of the P&C. Membership costs $2 and needs to be paid ahead of the meeting itself. If you haven’t already done so, please could you leave $2 in the P&C box in the office in an envelope with your name on it? It would be great if you could do this ahead of our meeting in Week 8 so that you are all ready to vote.

WORKING BEE COMING UP!
Save the date – Saturday 25 August, 1:00pm – 4:00pm - TEAM EUCALYPT! Our third Working Bee for the year is coming up at the end of the month. If you haven’t been able to attend one yet, please come along and lend a hand for half an hour. You don’t need to be an expert gardener by any stretch – just some enthusiasm and maybe some gardening gloves! In the lead up to the Bee:
Do you know anyone who might want to thin out their agapanthus or clivias? The school would greatly
appreciate their donation.
Had any landscaping done recently and have surplus bush rock or materials for a small retaining wall?
We would love to take the load off your hands.
More details in next week’s newsletter.
