ENTERPRISE CONTENT MANAGEMENT

Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is the strategies, methods and tools

used to capture, manage, store, preserve, and deliver content and

documents related to organizational processes. ECM tools and strategies

allow the management of an organization's, unstructured information

wherever that information exists.

DOCUMENTUM

Documentum is an Enterprise Content Management platform which

provides various tools to ensure and perform ECM, and it is also the name

of the software company that originally developed this software. But now, it is

owned by EMC Corporation.

CONTENT

The files and data of various forms which are stored in the file system in an

unstructured way are known as the Content.

METADATA

Since the content is unstructured, structured information is linked to each

content item, and this data about the content is stored in the database and is

known as Metadata.

REPOSITORY

The Repository is a managed system of content and metadata storage

which stores the content on to a host file system and the metadata into a

database.

CONTENT SERVER

The Content Server provides the content (data) from the repository to the

applications, which in turn provides friendly interfaces to human beings. It

brings the data from the repository to life and manages its lifecycle.

VERSIONING:

The content server implicitly applies version label to each object related to

any content. The default version when any content is added to the

repository is 1.0 and is labeled as CURRENT.

Whenever any document is modified, a new version is created and it can

be a major version (for example: 2.0) or a minor version (for example:

1.1) or it can also be saved as the Existing version.

The increment in the left side of the decimal in version is for a major

version and in the right side is for a minor version.

The purpose of the ECM Phase2 My Documentum project in the design

stage is primarily to design the solution with the objective of eventual

deployment of My Documentum, DAM and Media Workspace

components.

It will also focus on addressing the resilience needs of the current

architecture from Phase 1.

We are building new Documentum components i.e. My Documentum forDesktop, My Documentum for Outlook, and My Documentum for Offline,

Digital Asset Manager and Media WorkSpaceon the existing ECM platform

thus extend ing th e exist ing Info rmat ion Systems Architecture.
