  • Traditional web content management solutions aim to make it easy for non-technical usersto create content with simple-to-use, fill-in-the-blanks forms and WYSIWYG (What YouSee Is What You Get) editors. The concept is to separate content development from layoutand let the web professionals manage how web content is targeted, published, andpresented to customers.

But this approach has proven to be lengthy and expensive, requiring significant ITinvolvement and creating a web development bottleneck for new business initiatives. Inaddition, it has provided business users with little direct control over the layout, function-ality, and management of their intranets, extranets, and public sites. These professionalsare looking for greater control in order to ensure that this critical communications vehicleis meeting their business objectives.

Next-generation web content managementCustomers, partners, employees, and investors have turned to the Web as a primarycommunications channel because it has proven itself as a relevant, timely, personalizedform of communication. As the Web has become business critical, so has involvingbusiness professionals directly in how information is communicated. These professionals, often referred to as knowledge workers, are demanding greater control over theprocess: creating content, modifying the design, deploying web applications, settingpersonalization, creating new sites, and so forth.

Built on EMC Documentum Web Publisher, the next generation of web contentmanagement solutions gives business professionals greater control over websites byincreasing ease-of-use and leveraging the IT efficiencies of a centralized infrastructure.Responsibility for individual sites is devolved to the business users closest to day-to-dayoperations. The result is a streamlined web content creation-to-publishing process thatis aligned with business requirements and that makes the overall management of webproperties far more efficient and less expensive.

Reduce web development bottlenecks and empowerbusiness professionals to take greater control of websites

A revolutionary approachPage Builder is a revolutionary approach to web content management that allowsnon-technical business users to utilize the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get)editor to create content and layout (page design) and to deploy web applications suchas Java script, blogs, and other external content sources. The new editor combinesease-of-use with powerful capabilities formerly found in complex design tools. Both contentcreators and web designers use a full browser-based editor, requiring no programmingknowledge. The browser-based editor easily fits in IT environments without the needfor downloading applets or ActiveX controls.

    EMC Documentum Web Publishing Architecture

  • How it worksUsing Page Builder, knowledge workers can navigate through existing websites andselect the page or individual component to edit. Or they can build a web page fromscratch simply by adding rows and columns and defining the sections: header, footer, navigation, content area, and others. During the creation process, users have the abilityto lock and unlock every component, as well as select the preview function to see whatthe page looks like in context of the entire site.

When creating a web page, Page Builder supports the editing and deployment of multiplecontent types, such as rich text, plain text, images, hyperlinks, navigation, movies(Flash, Windows Media Player), layouts, and external components.

With the help of simple, context-sensitive menus, users can create practically an unlimitednumber of arbitrary page layouts. The content is stored in the repository as an XML fileand rendered using XSLT. Each page template is stored on the server as an XML documentand the structure is driven by the XML Schema. Among other things, Schema defineswhich elements are allowed and where they are allowed. It also defines the details ofeach content element, for example, its attributes and default values.

Unlike other editors, Page Builder supports web content transformations out of theboxweb developers do not need to design a new XSL Content validation and updatesare performed on the server-side using XSL. In certain cases this is done asynchro-nously, while browser-side updates (non-persistent) are performed to improve userinterface responsiveness.

Page Builder in in-context-editing mode, where the non-technical user simply clicks on the components

and edits the content. The user has selected the rich text component and is able to make edits "in-line"

    with the page
