History

Mt. Hood Aquatics was officially formed in February 2009 withthe merger of two long-time rival teams: Mt. Hood Swim Teamand David Douglas Swim Club. Seeking to better support thecommunity and foster the competitive growth of the swimmers, these two teams combined forces to create the premier swimorganization in the Northwest. With support from Mt. HoodCommunity College, the Black and Red hit the water with 200plus swimmers and a formidable coaching staff.

The Club

MHA is a member of USA Swimming. It is a non-profit clubstaffed by unpaid volunteers and paid coaches. Our trainingcenters are at four locations: Mt. Hood Community CollegeAquatic Center (MHAC), Reynolds Community Pool and theDavid Douglas and Barlow High School pools.

Parents are invited and encouraged to attend the monthlyParent Board Meeting held at the Mt. Hood Aquatic Center thethird Thursday of each month. At these meetings decisions aremade regarding team business, upcoming meets andfundraising.

Team Structure

In keeping with the philosophy of providing a quality swimmingprogram for young people of all ages, abilities and interestlevels, Mt. Hood Aquatics offers several levels of professionalinstruction and training. The coaching staff will determine thelevel with parent agreement.

Not only is this job simple, but also is a great way to meetother parents and it gives you the best seat in the house! Ifyou are unfamiliar with the duties of a timer, check withanother parent or the head timer.

The time spent timing at meets hosted by MHA can be appliedto your family time commitment (see page 20). Timing done ata meets hosted by another team cannot be applied to yourcommitment hours.

Family Time andFundraising Commitment

MHA is a non-profit team operated entirely by the efforts ofparents.

Family participation and income from fundraising andsponsorship are necessary for the team to continue providingthe best experience and training to our swimmers. Whiletraining fees cover coaches' salaries and other expenses suchas pool time, training equipment and meet supplies requireadditional financial support.

Operating the team and running swim meets would beimpossible without the involvement of the MHA parents. Therefore, all families are expected to assist with teamduties and with fundraising activities as explained below.

Fundraising Commitment

Families are required to meet a minimum fundraisingcommitment amount. The amount is based on the swimmer'slevel as shown below:

Team Senior III Senior I Gold RedWhite &Sr. Rec.

Commitment $600 $550 $500 $350 $300

Families with more than one MHA swimmer will have acommitment based on the highest-level swimmer.

Commitment 40 hours 30 hours 20 hours 10 hours

MHA requires families with swimmers on the Gold, Senior I, andSenior III levels to complete their volunteer time commitmenthours at the MHA Howard Jones Memorial Meet or the Long

Course Senior Sectional Meet.

The team organizes events throughout the year to makereaching the commitment level as easy as possible. Theseevents include the Annual Spaghetti Dinner, Swim-A-Thon,wreath sales and the use of scrip.

Fundraising commitments are satisfied by the amount MHAreceives over expenses, not necessarily the sales amount. Please see scrip information for exact amounts per vendor;please note that MHA receives 50% of the amount listed onthe order form. Acquiring corporate sponsorship funds countsdollar for dollar toward the fundraising commitment.Swimmers new to swimming will not have a fundraisingcommitment for their first season. A season is one of the six-month periods defining either the short-course or long-coursetraining periods.

Families that do not fulfill their commitment level by the endof the swim year will be billed for the amount not satisfied.

Family Time Commitment

All families must assist the team by contributing time towardrunning meets and/or performing duties. The minimumnumber of hours required of families is based on the level orsquad on which the swimmer(s) participates as shown below:

22

The commitment for families with more than one MHAswimmer will be based on the highest-level swimmer only. These hours can be earned by helping out the team in avariety of ways. Here are just a few ideas:

Help out at an MHA meet by timing, being a runner, etc.

Fill a position such as pool representative, courier, fundraising coordinator, etc.

Volunteers must report the time they work by completing aFamily Time Commitment reporting form and mailing it in alongwith your monthly training fees. Forms are available in theswimmers boxes or on the MHA web site.

New White or New Red first-time swimmers new to swimmingwill not have a family time commitment for their first season. Aseason is one of the six-month periods defining either theshort-course or long-course training periods.

Families that do not fulfill their time commitment level by theend of the swim year will be billed $10 for each hour notsatisfied.

MHA realizes that occasionally unforeseen circumstances ariseand families may have difficulty fulfilling time commitments. Ifthis occurs, families are encouraged to make a written requestto the parent board. Based on the request, the board may:

Reduce the commitment amount Seek another parent that will increase their commitment

to cover the parent's shortage Let the commitment and possible billing of unfulfilled

hours stand unchanged.

Commitment Hours Separate FromFundraising

Fundraising in excess of the minimum amount may not beapplied to the family time commitment, nor can family timecontributed above the minimum level be used to satisfyfundraising amounts.
