April 25, 2015 WHAT: SKILL TRADES Merit Badge College WHERE: James Sprunt Community College, Highway 11 South, Kenansville WHEN: Sat., April 25, 8:00–5:00 PM DEADLINE: Troop registration is due at the Tuscarora Council office by April 8, 5:00 PM No Late Fee and no registration accepted after the deadline! WHY: To provide Scouts with an opportunity to complete or partially complete one or

two Merit Badges of their choice. WHO: Any Scouts from any Council that would like to experience learning an exciting new Skill Trades based merit badge along with many Eagle Required badges.

CATALOG INFORMATION

Registration/Cost:

Registration cost is $10.00 per Scout. Included in the registration is a MB participation patch. There will be no registration accepted after 5:00 PM, on Friday, April 8. Registrations will be done by Troop. Class go/no-go decisions will be made after April 17. No refunds will be given, but leaders can go on-line and make substitutions into open Merit Badge classes up until April 20.

Once your troop registration is received at the Scout Shop, you will be given a log-on user name and password for Badgetracker, an on-line registration service. On-line Registration opens at 8 AM, Sat., April 11 On-line Registration and schedule changes end at Noon, Mon., April 20 A provisional program will be in place for those Scouts who wish to attend but whose Troops will not be participating. Provisional registration must be done by the Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster.

Important Notices:

v You must work on the most recent Merit Badge pre-requisites and work should begin NOW!

v Scoutmasters will be able to select and download their Scouts’ class schedule upon selection showing registered boys and which Merit Badges sessions they will be attending.

v Merit Badge College will operate from the BSA 2015 Requirements book. Make sure that you are using an up-to-date Merit Badge Pamphlet. On-line workbooks should be checked against the 2015 Requirements book because some of these services do not regularly update.

v Troop Registration deadline is April 8. v Scout Merit Badge Selection deadline is April 20. v You will not need blue Merit Badge cards! Forms will be provided.

Participation:

Headquarters for the event will be at the Strickland Building, 100 Commons Area, (See Campus Map Addendum 1) One morning class and one afternoon class will be offered for participants. Scouts may choose to attend either session, or both. Classes will be held in different classrooms throughout the campus.

What to Bring: v Notebook paper and pencil/pen v Any prerequisite items for each class completed. If pre-requisites are not

presented, you will not be able to complete the Merit Badge at the college. v The current Merit Badge pamphlet for each Merit Badge course you are

taking. Read the CURRENT Pamphlet thoroughly before attending Merit Badge College! Again, web site workbooks are a good resource, but they do not replace the pamphlet! Check both Pamphlets and web workbooks against the 2015 Requirements book for accuracy.

v Wear your Class “A” uniform during class time.

Study the Merit Badge pamphlet (s) carefully prior to coming to Merit Badge College. You should know the information required of you before attending. All requirements that instruct you to BRING, WRITE, or DISCUSS should be neatly prepared, typewritten and proofread for accuracy. Your name, address and troop number must appear on your work. To receive credit for your work, some requirements that state, BRING or PREPARE may be certified by a note from your parents or Scoutmaster, unless noted otherwise in this catalogue.

Lunch: Lunch is off-campus; you will be provides a map of all fast-food restaurants in proximity to the college at check-in.

Uniform:

All Scouts MUST be in Class “A” Uniform during class times.

Saturday Schedule

8:00 - 8:20 AM - Check-in at Strickland Building, 100 Commons Area Addendum 1)

8:20 - 8:30 AM - Welcome, Opening and Orientation (Courtyard Weather permitting)

8:45 -11:45 AM - First Session

Noon –1:00 PM - Lunch on your on (Map of local restaurants at check-in)

1:15 – 4:15 PM - Second Session

4:30 - 5:00 PM - Checkout at Strickland Building, 100 Commons Area

(Scoutmasters pick up patches and Scout MB paperwork)

Your Responsibilities:

Scouts will travel about the campus in Merit Badge session groups. It is necessary that Scouts remain together in their assigned areas. Scouts must remember that they are representing ALL BOY SCOUTS, their sponsoring organization, and the Tuscarora Council. Please see to it that all Scouts are picked up from the Strickland Building, 100 Commons Area by 5:00 PM. Instructors will be leaving and we cannot allow any unsupervised Scouts.

YOUTH (Merit Badge) CATALOG

(Make Certain You Are Working From A CURRENT Merit Badge Book) Merit Badges marked with an asterisk * are Eagle Required.

All Scouts MUST read the Merit Badge Pamphlet prior to the Session. Certification of completion of a requirement is a brief note from a parent or Scoutmaster giving details about the completion of the requirement.

Animal Science (Morning class only) 1. Come prepared with knowledge of 1,2,3,4, & 5 2. Class will cover Beef Cattle Option 3. Bring a notebook and completed ACTIVITY WAIVER (See Addendum 2 for Waiver). Scouts will visit a local cattle farm.

Art (Morning and afternoon classes) 1. Bring pencils, erasers and sketch pads Optional-Bring colored pencils, markers or paints and brushes 2. Scouts come with ideas of a character to design; this can be a cartoon character, a comic book character, sports figure, mascot, etc. (See Addendum 3 for examples). 3. Scouts will put their character into a storyboard in class. 4. Scouts will create a logo/patch for that character. 5. Scouts will paint the character or do detailed pencil rendering or pen/ink.

Automotive Maintenance (Morning and afternoon classes) 1. Read and review Automotive Maintenance MB Book 2. Come prepared to discuss and preform requirements 3. Have the last two pages (diagram of gauges and diagram of warning lights) filled out prior to the class. Scouts will answer questions from the diagram. 4. Bring 8a, 9a (See Addendum 4 for complete class details)

Chemistry (Morning and afternoon classes) 1. Read the Chemistry MB booklet and come prepared to work. 2. Bring pen/pencil and paper to class

Chess (Morning and afternoon classes) 1. Scouts must stay for entire class to qualify. 2. Bring pen/pencil and paper to class 3. Prior to class, e-mail your experience level, frequency of play, and any tournament wins to the instructor, Doug Thomas at [email protected]

*Citizenship in the Community (Morning and afternoon classes) 1. Bring a community map that you have labeled government buildings; do as much research in advance as possible 2. Bring certification of requirement 3, 4, 5 from a parent/guardian 3. Bring a memory stick to save a copy of your public presentation (7) which will be developed in class. *Citizenship in the Nation (Morning and afternoon classes) 1. 2 a, b, or c Prepare to do 2d in class 2. Bring 3 3. Do 6 – Emphasis of National Historic Importance. Be prepared to talk about the document, author, etc.   *Citizenship in the World (Afternoon class only) 1.  Bring  a  world  map  and  be  familiar  with  same.  2.  Bring  a  copy  of  the  US  Constitution  and  read  same  prior  to  class.  3.  Bring  a  copy  of  a  current  national  newspaper  or  magazine  to  class.  4.  Visit  the  website  of  the  US  State  Department  and  be  familiar  with  same.  5.  Research  Scouting  in  another  Country  and  be  prepared  to  share  3  differences  as  they  relate  to            Scouting  in  the  US. *Communications (Morning and afternoon classes) 1. Complete 2b 2. On your own, prepare and bring evidence (SM or parent signature) of completing 3,4,5,6,7C, 8 and 9. Crime Prevention (Afternoon class only) No prerequisites are required. MB will not be completed on this day, however Scouts will be provided a short list of requirements they need to complete at a later date.

Digital Technology (Morning and afternoon classes) 1. Bring a written report to show evidence of completion for reqt.6 and 7 2. Create and bring a Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo email address to save your documents. Energy (Morning and afternoon classes) 1. Bring any articles for 1(a) 2. Optional, bring in toy for 2 (b) 3. Bring notebook with 4 and 5 completed

Engineering (All Day Class - Scouts must attend both sessions) Prerequisites: Scouts who bring prerequisites to class should complete the merit badge in one day. 1. Scouts must be first Class and at least 13 yrs. old 2. Scouts must print out the engineering merit badge workbook at meritbadge.com 3. Complete in writing requirement 2 (between half and 1 typed page): 4. Select one of the twenty items from www.greatachievements.org. (Can be something else not on that list), state in one sentence state why it qualifies as an engineering achievement. Site at least two sources of information (one besides www.greatachievements.org) in answering this requirement. The scout should list the engineers (not just provide a list of names but focus on one or a few engineers and tell what they did, what obstacles they overcame, their approach or solution to overcome the obstacles, etc.) 5. Complete 9 and bring documentation/web searches to show results 6. Find three career opportunities in and for one, research the education, training, and experience required for this profession.    Entrepreneurship (Afternoon only) 1. Study the Entrepreneurship MB Booklet 2. Be prepared to define, discuss, explain 1,2,3 3. Bring a written report for 4,and 6 (See Addendum 5 for Instructor’s Note). Family Life (Morning and afternoon classes) 1. Come prepared to discuss 1 and 2 2. Show evidence and bring list for 3, 4 3. Bring evidence or be prepared to discuss 5 4. 6 and 7 will be completed in class

Farm Equipment (TBD) An e-mail with this go no-go class will go out prior to the April 8 deadline.

Fingerprinting (Morning and afternoon classes) Course work will be completed in the classroom; No prerequisites. Scouts must attend entire class for credit.

Fish and Wildlife Management (Morning and afternoon classes) 1. Scouts come prepared to discuss 1, 2, 3, and 4. 2. Familiarize and be ready to do 5b 6b and 7a in class.

Home Repairs (Morning and afternoon classes) 1. Be prepared to discuss 1 a, b 2. Familiarize and be ready to do 2 a, b, g, h, 3 e, f, g, 4 a, c, 5b,d, 6 b, c, f in class. Intro to Scuba (Morning and afternoon classes) This session satisfies the academic requirements for the BSA SCUBA and Snorkeling BSA Programs. Learn about dive equipment, safe and responsible diving, some basic science of diving, diving skills you will learn in your SCUBA course, and marine life. Participants will be given the applications for these two programs as well as the BSA SCUBA Merit Badge application and Merit Badge Pamphlet on a CD in pdf format. To complete BSA SCUBA Merit badge, the Scout must complete the questions in the SCUBA Merit Badge Workbook. Show evidence of completion of 8 Medicine (Morning and afternoon classes) 1. Come prepared with 7 and 10 2. Please be familiar with all material in the book! Nuclear Science (Afternoon class taught by members of the National  Student  American  Nuclear  Society,  NC  State  Chapter) 1. Requirements 1 and 2, 4, 5 & 6 covered in class  1. Bring evidence of your completion of 3a or 3b  2. Scouts will complete 4, 5, & 6 in class 3. Be prepared to cover 7 and 8 with MB Counselor *Personal Fitness (Morning and afternoon classes) 1. Scouts bring their printed worksheets for the badge. 2. Run a mile and bring in time. After MB college - They will need to show their troop counselor that they have gotten a physical and a dental exam and then complete their 13-week physical activity chart. *Personal Management (Morning and afternoon classes) Boys who do not complete the pre-requisites WILL NOT complete the Badge at MB College. 1. READ the MB Booklet prior to coming to class 2. Bring to class the work or knowledge (ie. prepared to discuss) Requirements 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10. 3. Truck Transportation (Morning class only) 1. Bring Notebook and pencil to class 2. Read the MB Booklet and come prepared to discuss 1, 2, 3 3. 5, 6, 7, and 8 will be done on site 4. Bring 8 and 10

Veterinary Medicine (Morning and afternoon classes) Scouts must be able to write a paragraph paper For 6 requirement- In order to complete the Merit Badge, Scouts must visit a vet hospital prior to MB college. The instructor can approve their paper (they may have time to write a report that day) and the MB will be complete. Scouts may choose to visit their family veterinarian by calling and explaining what they need. Also, the Johnston Animal Hospital is open to this visit; please contact Dr. Michael C. Ward, Merit Badge instructor, via email to schedule your visit to the hospital located at 126 N. Brightleaf Blvd., Smithfield Tel: 919-934-2511 [email protected]| Welding (Morning and afternoon classes) Scouts must be at least 16 years of age and bring their own welding protective equipment, and steel or composite toe boot. The welding process will be SMAW (stick) with a 3/32 E7018 in the 1G and 2G (flat and horizontal) positions.
