Preliminary task - front page

Faults:

Photograph – Positioned incorrectly, cutting of models arm and making the magazine look unprofessional.

Background - the posterise effect makes the magazine look less authentic and more amateur.

Text – is not bold enough and blends in to the background which is hugely unappealing.

Typography – looks to standard for a magazine and therefore reflects an unprofessional look.

Improvements:

Photograph – is centered and clear with a clear cut mid-shot.

Background – is plain black in order to give a professional effect.

Text – is bold, legible and clearly stands out which is appealing to the reader.

Typography – Has a clear and consistent style that looks exclusive and professional.

Preliminary task – Contents pageFaults:

Background – Overstretched and unclear to what image actually is. Also inconsistent with the front cover.

Page numbers – Overlap on one occasion

Typography – Standard font that looks unprofessional.

Text – bad use of color making text blend in to the background and look amateur.

Additional image – has a white outline due to bad cropping.

Sticker – also used on front cover which makes the page look unprofessional.

Music magazine – Contents pageImprovements:

Background – Consistent with front cover and simple in order to insure attention is not detracted from images and text.

Page numbers – Don’t overlap

Typography – Consistent with front cover and have an exclusive look which relates to the magazine itself.

Text – colour contrasts with background and is therefore clear and easy to read.

Additional images - well cropped and positioned giving a flawless look.

Conclusion

• Overall, I have gained a better understanding of the standards a magazine should be at in order for it to look professional and polished. I have learnt how to use typography, images, composition and effects appropriately which all contribute to making a successful magazine and I feel I have made huge steps in terms of my ability to successfully create a magazine which is accomplished and well formulated.
