Roll up, roll up... It’s circus time

MONIQUE BASSON

THE unmistakable feeling of excitement thatonly a circus can bring, is in the air as the shi-ning heart of fun-filled, belly-aching laughterfamily entertainment - is coming to town.

Those who love to watch the acrobats tum-ble in the air, clowns just being silly and thetaste of popcorn should not miss the BrianBoswell’s Circus that is coming to JeffreysBay on January 24 and 25.

The show features a wide range of acts in-cluding clowns, magic, acrobats, daring ae-rial artists, a spectacular high wire act fromMongolia, jugglers and much more - offeringover an hour of absorbing action, suspense, surprise and hilarity.

Apart from these circus acts, the BrianBoswell’s Circus also have their fluffy, slith-ery, “wild” and entertaining entourages. Li-ons, elephants, horses, perky pigs and per-forming poodles are just some of the animalsthat you will see at this circus.

Staged in the same wholesome family spiritthat parents and grandparents can enjoy andin which children will merrily revel in yearsahead, the big top tent is going up on January24 and 25 at Fountains Mall.

Shows will take place at 3.30pm and at7.30pm on both days. Tickets cost R70 per per-son (unreserved) and R90 and R120 per person(reserved). For bookings or more informa-tion, phone 0 083 629 7799 or visitwww.boswell.co.za.

ANIMAL CARECareTHE animals are an integral part of the circusand are treated as part of the family. Theirwell-being is of utmost importance. Careful at-tention is paid to their diets. They get the bestfood and care. They are groomed, exercisedand have their enclosures cleaned daily.

Animal keepers and trainers are never farfrom their charges 24 hours a day.

Performing animals often live longer thantheir wild or more idle counterparts, due inpart to their active and enriched lifestyle, which includes regular exercise and interac-tion with other animals and humans.

The SPCA visits the Circus and only withtheir approval, can the animals take part incircus acts.

Hulle maak my bankrot,” ver-tel ’n laggende Faan.

Hier hou Maxie een vandie kleintjies in haar hand. Foto: MONIQUE BASSON

PLEASE GIVE US A LOVINGLOVINGHOME

LEFT: Not yet a year old, Ceasar who is fully vaccinated is lead trained, loves toplay with a frisbee and to go for walks. The SPCA volunteers describe him as a “bigteddy bear”. He is possibly a cross between a Chow and a Sharpei. Ceasar is largein size, but good when handled by a person. He would love to play in your garden.RIGHT: 7month old Dixie, who is spayed and fully vaccinated, is gentle and loving. Her tail is curly like a pug and she is the size of a big Jack Russell. She will makea great pet for people who want a companion for other dogs or want a single dog.She doesn’t fight with other dogs. She loves toys and games. Dixie needs to find ahome urgently. To adopt Ceasar or Dixie, contact the SPCA at 0042 295 2814.Photo’s: SUPPLIED

Free technicalsupport for tour ridersPARTICIPANTS in the 27th TheHerald Volkswagen Cycle Tour, which takes place on February 4and 5, should make servicingtheirbicyclesaNewYear’s resolu-tion, said tour co-founder RobRudman.

The former national cross-countryand downhill representative, whoseCyclo Pro shop will be partneringwith GT as the official bike and tech-nical support sponsor, said ridersshould have their bikes servicedabout now to prevent any nasty sur-prises on race day.

“Nothing’s going to go wrong afterthat that you can’t repair, but at leastyou have two or three weeks to sortout any lingering problems that maynot have been apparent during theservice.”

The mountain bike events on theSaturday are hosted by the Addo Po-lo Club while Sunday’s road races(excluding the family and children’sevents) depart from Hobie Beach inPort Elizabeth.

With 35years’ experience in the in-dustry, Rudman and his team of bikemechanics will be providing back-upfor both disciplines. “It’s a free ser-vice, but riders will have to pay forparts if required.”

His team will “sweep” the coursein the road events – from the 21kmPowerade Leisure Ride to the 105kmClassic – and 30km Powerade Lei-sure Challenge off-road race.

Under Cycling South Africa regu-lations, mechanical assistance tomountain bikers in the longer 80kmExtreme and 60km Adventure is for-bidden.

“It’s the fun rider that we aim to

help. Riders in the longer disci-plines may only receive assistancefrom fellow competitors,” said Rud-man.

Having ridden the road race 15times and also the mountain bikeevent, he understands the variouspitfalls.

“Chains come off or break and ri-ders often get multiple puncturesand are then stranded. We help to getthem back on the road.”

Riders can also seek assistancefrom Cyclo Pro/GT’s innovativeevents trailer -on race day. This mo-bile workshop, which comes with arooftop commentary booth, will be afixture at both venues.

GT regional manager StephenCraddock said thiswouldbe the trail-er’s first outing at a national classic.“Our aim is to provide a public sup-port unit that offers free, neutralservice to all participants.”

Rudman added that the on-siteshops would offer everything fromspare tyres and tubes to shoes, gloves, helmets and energy pro-ducts. The main shop will be at theexpo in The Boardwalk Race Villageat HobieBeach, with a satellite outletat Addo.

Cyclo Pro/GT has also sponsoreda road and mountain bike worth a to-tal of R40 000. These will be givenaway at the lucky draw that followsthe feature race on the Sunday.

The grand prize will be another setof wheels in the form of a four-doorPolo Vivo 1.4 from title sponsorVolkswagen Group SA.
