Female members ofthe Jeffreys Bay Police are out in fullforce to celebrate Women’s Month by giving backto the community they serve. According to w/o Petra Els, everypolice woman will commit one hour per week in the Community Service Centre. Yesterday they took to the streets in Pellsrus and Ocean View, handingout bread sponsored by Sasko to the community. A/O Surraine van Taakspent some time with “ouma” Pauline Kramer. South Africa commemoratesWomen’s Month in August as a tribute to the thousands of women whomarched to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956 in protest against theextension of Pass Laws to women. This historic march was a turning pointin the role of women in the struggle for freedom and society at large. Sincethat eventful day, women from all walks of life became equal partners inthe struggle for a nonracial and nonsexist SA. Photos: PETRA ELS

KOUGA is makinggender history thisWomen’s Month - three
of the municipality’s newdirectors are women.
It is the first time in Kouga’shistory that as many women asmen serve on the municipality’stop management team, headed byMunicipal Manager Sidney Fadi.
Directors Carleen Arends, Car-lien Burger, Thobeka Tom, VictorFelton and Japie Jansen took uptheir posts on August 1.
“The timing of the appoint-ments during Women’s Month ishighly appropriate because ithighlights the municipality’scommitment to gender equality,”said Executive Mayor Booi Koe-rat.
“We are privileged to havethree remarkable women on ourtop team who will be helping usbuild the kind of communities wewould all like to see our childrengrow up in.”
Human Resource Developmentexpert Thobeka Tom heads theAdministration, Monitoring andEvaluation Directorate.
“Tom is an amazing example ofa woman who overcame greatodds through hard work,” said
the Mayor.“She joined the Health Depart-
ment in 1988 as a cleaner. She hadsix childrenandnoMatric.Yet, bygetting up at 3am most mornings, she completed her schoolingwhile working and caring for herfamily, then went on to earn aMaster’s Degree in Public Admi-nistration, and worked her wayup in the Department.
“Her passion is helping othersto transform their lives. She hasthe determination and expertiseto help us create a strong and dis-ciplined staff complement, fo-cused on uplifting communities.”
New Local Economic Develop-ment (LED) and Tourism DirectorCarleen Arends hails from NelsonMandela Bay where she held asimilar position at the EconomicDevelopment, Tourism and Agri-culture Unit for eight years.
“This is one of our new directo-rates,” the Mayor explained. “Itmeansagreat deal tous that itwillbe headed by someone who knowsexactly, from first-hand experi-ence, how this directorate shouldfunction so that communities willreap the economic benefits.”
Kouga’s new CFO, Carlien Bur-ger, was appointed as the munici-pality’s Risk Manager in 2010, but
her strong accounting and audit-ing background catapulted her in-to the role of acting CFO last year.
“Burger was called on to act asCFO at a time when our munici-pality was near bankrupt,” saidthe Mayor. “While a full financialrecovery cannot be achieved over-night, she has already proven herworth. We are confident that sheis the right person to continueleading the Finance Directorate.”
While the focus for August mayfall onwomen, thenew Infrastruc-ture, Planning and DevelopmentDirector Victor Felton and SocialServices Director Japie Jansen byno means have to stand back fortheir female counterparts.
Civil engineer Victor Feltonhails from Nelson Mandela Baywhere he was a member of thesenior management team, spe-cialising in project and contractmanagement for the Infrastruc-ture and Engineering Directorateand Public Health Directorate.
Qualified in both the legal andteaching professions, Japie Jan-sen has been in government formore than 30 years. While he hasheld various senior positions, hisspeciality has been those func-tions that form part of the SocialServices Directorate.

WHO would ever have thought that the soapused to clean oil from penguins, will leaveyour house as clean as a new six pens.
As strange as it may sound, just as effectiveit proved to be. That is exactly what ChrisnaDollman, 4 Ruby director of GNLD Internation-al, explained and demonstrated to a room fullof sceptics at a recent business brunch in Jef-freysBay.Topics discusses, furthermore includ-ed how to save money in the everyday house-hold and how to generate a residual income.
Several environmentally friendly productswere introduced and demonstrated to guests, including a versatile Light Duty Concentratesoap. Dollman stated that conservation autho-rities in South Africa chose to use this productto clean penguins after oil spills. It was the onlysoap they could find that didnot destroynaturaloils in penguin feathers saving hundreds of ani-mals dying from hypothermia.
Other interesting products included an allpurpose cleaner that cleans anything from waxcrayons in carpets to dirty engines. A superiorwashing powder that costs only R 1.53 per 5kgload was also demonstrated as well as furniture
polish, car wash and many more. She made it clear that all cleaning products
are non-corrosive, non-toxic, non-caustic, childsafe and completely bio degradable. Further-more she stated that all the harmful and expen-sive cleaning products used in everyday house-holds could be replaced with a few GNLD pro-ducts at a fraction of the price.
Dollman explained that most off the shelf sup-plements contain synthetic materials not recog-nised by the body as food and that GNLD offerssupplementsmade fromreal food. Shealsomen-tioned that GNLD supplements are backed andchecked by an independent Scientific AdvisoryBoard founded by Dr. Arthur Furst, world re-nowned cancer researcher and toxicologist.
Originally a nurse by profession, she sharedhow she had managed to build a large interna-tional business by introducing these productsto friends and using it in her own household. She stated that through the business, she andher husband was able to realise their dreams, including international travels, several housesand driving the cars they always wanted.
Lastly, she explained how anybody with adream can become an independent GNLD dis-tributor and earn a residual income in multiplecurrencies and that the business does not needdoor to door sales.

A FEW new homes will soonrise in Kruisfontein, dedi-cated to helping meet the
pressing need for foster careacross the Kouga region.
Taking a small first step to dealwith this large problem in Hu-mansdorp, Victory4All (V4All)Projects has embarked on a near R2million project that will see the con-struction of three new foster homesin Kruisfontein, Humansdorp.
“As a result of alcohol or drugabuse or extreme poverty, many pa-rents are just not able to take care oftheir children. At the Department ofSocial Development, there is a longlist of children thatneeds tobeplacedin foster care,” said Johan Vos, co-founder of V4All Projects.
“Many children in the informalsettlements of Jeffreys Bay and Hu-mansdorp live under terrible cir-cumstances. They face hunger, ill-ness, violence, prostitution, a lack ofadequate housing and sanitation andmuch more on a daily basis. Oftenthey lose hope and do not expect theirfuture to be any better than that of
their parents.“By building foster homes, we at
V4All want to create a better futurefor these children in need, unlockingtheir full potential and give themhope for the future.”
Construction already started inMay this year and it is anticipatedthat the foster homes, complete witha community hall, will be completedby November this year.
According to Vos, the homes, con-structed at a cost of R650 000 each, aredesigned to accommodate a maxi-mum of six children.
“The homes are so called fostercare cum homes for disabled chil-dren. They will be home to a mix ofchildren, accommodating foster carechildren (statutoryplaced), aswell aschildren with disabilities attendingthe Rainbow Day Care Centre inKruisfontein.”
Since 2007 V4All have already con-structed four foster homes and onesafe house in Jeffreys Bay, and theyare now expanding their projects tothe Humansdorp area.
For more information or to be-come a foster parent at one of thehomes in Kruisfontein, send an e-mail to [email protected] orvisit www.victory4all.com.

TINNEKE GOEDHALS
FIVE years ago two sisters, SusanandJackieBotha, boughtapropertyin Jeffreys Bay with the idea ofbuilding a retirement house fortheir mom.
Life, however, took them on ajourney that led them to decide tobuild a green house. “I did a lot of re-search and we decided on building asandbag house,” said Susan.
Notonlywasitmorecost-effectivethan a conventional house, but itwas also environmentally friendlyand it required less skill so theycould do it themselves.
“A sandbag house has a smallertotal-embodied energy than a ce-ment and brick house and yet it ismuch more insulated - meaning it’swarmer in the winter and cooler insummer,” said Susan.
According to Susan the walls arebuilt from sandbags, stacked on topof each other. They are then coveredwith a layer of cob as a form of plas-ter. This layer gets plastered with alayer of lime to seal the walls andthen they add prickly pear juice tothe walls to make them more waterrepellent.
For the interior walls they use atechnique called wattle and daubwhere you weave wattle and clad itwith cob and lime. When finished itlooks like a normal wall.
They contracted a local artist tomake all the lights from driftwood, pottery and recycled glass. A friend
of theirs, who works on a film setwhere they built a submarine, sup-plied thedoorsandtheirdoor framesfrom recycled Telkom poles, whichthey sanded down.
They have been building for 18monthsandareclose to finishing. It’sonly thekitchencupboardsandbath-rooms that they need to put in.
“It’s been taking long to build be-cause we are building it with cash,so we build as the money comes in.Also we are doing it ourselves andcannot commit all our time to it be-cause we all work. We are also pio-neers, having to learnandapplynat-ural building techniques for build-ing the walls, plastering, paintingand laying a natural floor, so wehave had a lot of trial and errortime,” said Susan.
When they started in December2010, they invited all their friendsand family to spend time with themover the Christmas period to helpbuild the house.
Many curious holiday makersand persons interested in naturalbuilding also came to help.
“Ithasbeenincredible.More thana 100 people from all over SA havehelped us build the house. We alsoheld a five-day building coursewherewehad22peoplehelpingout,”said Susan.
They will be holding a one-dayworkshop this Saturday (August 11)inJeffreysBay.Thecostof thework-shop is R350. Booking in advance isessential and can be made by e-mail-ing to [email protected].

Volgens Marais hou lidmaatskap van so’nklubbaie voordele in, soosdat daar soveelmense is by wie jy inligting oor jou passiekan inwin.
Die klub vergader elke tweede Saterdagvan die maand, met hul eerste vergaderingwat plaasvind op 14 Augustus by die piek-niek gebied by die Supertubes.
Vir meer inligting, kontak Tom du Toitby 0 083 628 4922 of Johan Marais by 0 082924 5346.
