AFRIFORUM in Jeffreys Bay and the KougaMunicipality have joined hands in the waragainst potholes in the area.

According to municipal spokesperson,Mfundo Sobele, this partnership will speed uproad repairs in Jeffreys Bay, espeicallyaround residential areas, in time for the holi-day season.

“The organisation will bring in human re-sources in terms of labour and some equip-ment, while the municipality will provide thematerial,” says Sobele.

“The municipality welcomes contributionsby any organisation in carrying forward thework of making Kouga the best place to livein. We have in the past worked with the StFrancis Bay Residents Association on roadrepairs.”

According to Dolf Botha, AfriForum Jef-

freys Bay chairman, the projects kicked off inSeetuin Road and they are currently busy fix-ing the potholes in Leadwood Street. Fromthere, they will move towards Oribi Streetand then Akasia Street.

“We rely heavily on donations from thepublic to carry the work forward,” saysBotha.

SHELL crafters from Jeffreys Bay are gearingup for a busy Festive Season. They have re-leased their first Christmas homeware anddecor collection, with the support of KougaMunicipality.

The Christmas Shell Collection consists ofwreathes, small Christmas trees and decora-tions, complemented by home decor items fitfor any occasion, from candleholders andbowels to placemats, tiebacks and servietteholders.

Gifts such as sandals, artfully decoratedwith shells, are also available.

All items are handmade by shell craftersfrom Jeffreys Bay and are on sale from theirstalls at the town’s main beachfront. Itemscan also be made to order.

The collection is the result of a 12-weektraining course hosted for local shell craftersby the municipality’s directorate for LocalEconomic Development, Tourism and Crea-tive Industries.

Kouga Executiuve Mayor Daphne Kettle-das said that shell craft was part of Kouga’sheritage but that interest in it has been dwin-dling, both among crafters and shoppers.

“This prompted the municipality to look atways to revive and promote shell craft,” shesaid. “Shell craft has been a source of incomefor many families, especially in Jeffreys Bay,and the skill has been passed on from genera-

tion to generation. We don’t want to lose sucha valuable piece of our heritage.”

The aim of the course was to help shell craft-ers design new products which would appealto the modern buyer. They were also takenthrough basic business guidelines on pricingand marketing their products effectively.

The course facilitator was Elaine Roos fromJeffreys Bay. She started with a group of 12crafters of whom six completed the course asa whole.

Among the participants were women whosenames are synonymous with the shell trade, including, Elsie Trompetter, a 66-year-oldgrandmother who depends on her shell in-come to help raise her four grandchildren.

Also in the groupwas Caroline Mintoor(56), whose mother, grandmother andgreat-grandmotherwere among the firstshell crafters of Jef-freys Bay. She hasfour sisters of whomthree also still make aliving from shells.

“My mother raisedus with shell money. She has become frailand it is now our turn

to look after her with the money we makefrom shells,” Caroline said.

While young blood is scarce in the craft, theparticipants included 22-year-old RochellePotgieter. She used to visit the beach with hergrandmother and fell in love with the diffe-rent shapes, sizes and colours of the shellsthey found there.

“The new designs we are working on havethe potential to attract young people to thecraft,” said 42-year-old Ann Titus, who alsocompleted the course. “Shell craft is no longerjust about making ornaments that gatherdust. The course has taught us to make itemsthat are both beautiful, functional and havemodern-day appeal.”

Sharon Rudolph, a 37-year-old mother ofthree, agrees that shell craft is evolving and thatyoung people can be inspired to participate.

“My 13-year-old daughter actually helpedme with some of these new designs,” shesaid.

She further believes that shell craft hasgreat therapeutic value, even if only practisedas a hobby.

“While you are putting together the shells, your mind is free to go wherever it wants to.It is a very relaxing pastime and unlocks one’screativity,” she said.

Dot Cappaert, a 71-year-old pensioner whorecently turned to shell craft to supplementher pension, completed the group.

Mayor Daphne Kettledas thanked all stake-holders for the different roles they played inensuring the retention of the status.“It is our sincere hope that, going forward,

we will be able to work together even moreclosely to look after our beachfront as awhole. It is our greatest tourist attractionandkey in our efforts to growour local econo-my,” said Kettledas.DolphinBeach is oneof 24beaches inSouth

Physically Disabled (APD) applauded Kougafor having one of themost accessible beachesin the country and local business for ever im-proving access for disabled communities.“JeffreysBay is alreadyaholidayand tour-

nities and visitors about timeswhen it is safeto go out bathing in order to avoid drowningswhich happen, though rarely, after hours

when life guards have gone home,” Masetisaid. She also had a special word for the Depart-

ment of Environmental Affairs who hadfunded the employment of 41 EPWP workerson the Coast Care programme.Cape St Francis has also been awarded a

If a family member needs blood, the lastthing youwant to hear is that there is a crit-

ical blood shortage.

There is no factory that produces blood andyet people pay very little attention to the bigdifference they are able to make by donatingblood.

Theabove facts arewhatmotivated the fam-ily of formerMiss Port Elizabeth, Bianca-AnnHarper Agherdien who passed-away last No-vember after a tragic motor accident, to starta blood drive in honour of Bianca.

She received 39 units of blood following atragic car accident.

At the time of Bianca’s accident, SANBSimposed cut backs as a result of very lowblood stocks and her family is determined toassist SANBS this festive season in support

of other blood recipients and their families,to prevent another shortage. The Bianca-Anne Harper Agherdien Blood

Drive entails the following:A mobile blood drive at The Bridge from 1

to 16December (Game foyer);KlinicareUiten-hage blooddrive onDecember 11th from12:00-19:00; Walker Drive, Kenako Mall & TheBridge blood drives on December 16th; Klini-care Despatch blood drive on December 22ndfrom 11:00 to 18:00.“South Africa is saddled with a high acci-

dent rate, an increasing number of illegaldrivers on the roads and traffic law enforce-ment that needs to be more efficient,” saidDenzyl Harper, Bianca’s father.“Bianca loved people. We want to keep her

legacy alive and to give meaning to the blooddrive.“Our message to the people is, if you want

to see change, be it!”

It’s not just blood - it’s life ..

THE children of Talhado Children’s Haven in Sea Vistawere treated to a most unusual event on November 12when local dentist, Dr. Michael Jones, arrived withGrade 6 learners from St Francis College to talk to themabout dental health care.

The event was the brain child of the college’s Grade6 learners and their history teacher, Cathryn Hempel.“We are currently studying democracy, including chil-dren’s rights and their right to free health care, and withthis in mind, the class raised enough money to purchaseeach child at the Haven a toothbrush and a tube of tooth-paste. We’ve come here today to hand these to the chil-dren and to give them the opportunity to learn from DrJones on how to care for their teeth,” says Hempel.“In addition, the Rotary Satellite Club of St Francis

heard about the initiative and felt it wasworthy of supportwith a donation of R1 000 to boost the funds,” she says. The children sat engrossed while Dr. Jones demon-

strated how to properly clean teeth and use dental floss. He first spoke in Afrikaans, and the message was inter-preted by a Xhosa translater, Grade 00 XhosaMontessoriteacher, Loreka Coetser.
