Denpasar (Bali Post)—Until the second quarter, Bali’s

economy grew by 2.17 percent. Thisfigure showed an increase over theprevious quarter reaching 0.75 per-cent. The recent economic growthwas fully driven by all economicsectors with the highest growth oc-curred in transport and communi-cation sector. Meanwhile, the cumu-lative economic growth in the firsthalf of 2011 compared to the sameperiod in the previous year grew by6.22 percent.

Head of Central StatisticsAgency (BPS) of Bali Province,Gede Suarsa, rated that accelerationof Bali’s economy in the secondquarter was faster than in the previ-ous quarter. Highest growth rateoccurred in the transport and com-munication sector namely by 3.35percent despite the previous quar-ter went through contraction (nega-tive growth) at minus 2.07 percent. The main contributor to the highrate of growth in the transport sub-sector was the air transport thatgrew by 5.06 percent and marinetransportation by 5.03 percent.

“Various activities organized inBali indicated significant effect tothe number of domestic and for-eign tourists visit to Bali so as toencourage the transportation sec-tor,” said Gede Suarsa in Denpasaron Friday (Aug 5).

“If the farmland is getting fewer, the water availability should be ad-equate. However, in fact the water isalso increasingly difficult,” said one ofthe sharecropping farmers in NorthDenpasar on Friday (Aug 5). Suchsluggish water condition was experi-enced by some owners of farmland atthe Subak Sembung and Sukun,Peguyangan Kaja. Since a few monthsago, the farmers had complained be-cause the water irrigation flowing totheir farmland was disrupted. His partyhad attempted to report the matter tosubak chief until local village official.

Related to the complaints of farm-ers, the Head of Denpasar AgriculturalAgency, Gede Ambara Putra, said thedisturbance of farmer’s water hap-pened because the irrigation channelwas out of order. However, since theauthority to renovate the irrigationchannel lay in other institutions, his

SAMBANGAN Village inSukasada Subdistrict is prob-ably the only vil lage inBuleleng and even in Baliwhich has nine waterfalls. It isdearly amazing. More impres-sively, all the waterfalls are lo-cated in extraordinarily pristinecountryside with verdant hillsand winding rivers. Seeingsuch potential, people directlyguess that Sambangan Villageindeed deserves to be made atourist destination.

Indeed, i t is t rue.Sambangan Village is nowbusy arranging the region intoa tourist destination. But, thetourism developed is eco-tour-ism without spoiling the na-ture. Aside from the beauty ofwaterfalls, the type of tourismon offer is the promenade byriverside and exploring localcaves and wild bushes. “Wecontinue to develop tourismwhile arranging the naturehere. We are also protecting theenvironment because thesprings, rivers and waterfallsare closely related to agricul-tural activities in this region,”said Village Chief ofSambangan, Nyoman SelametArya.

Sambangan Village with anarea 7.67 square kilometers in-habited by some 4,828 popula-tion had arranged eight of thenine waterfalls existing at thevillage, including the Kembar,Dedari, Canging, Aling-Aling,Kroya, and Pucuk Waterfall.Altitude of the eight waterfallswas between 20 to 31 meterswith its own beauty. Even,Sambangan Village had beenstipulated as a tourist destina-tion since 2006.

Chief Selamet said that sincethe area established as a tour-ist destination, Sambangan Vil-lage gradually began to be in-troduced to outside world. Many tourists came to see theAling-Aling Waterfall whichhad the highest altitude at thevillage. The scenic Aling-AlingWaterfall was indeed verybeautiful. From a distance of40 meters, the waterfall lookedlike a clear white cloud flyingfrom the top of the hill to theoverlay of the river. At theKembar waterfall, more visi-tors took adventure tourism.

Decline in the farmland area in Denpasar is not absolutelycaused by conversion of land into residential areas. A numberof farmlands owned by farmers at Peguyangan Kaja, for in-stance, even get annoyed by progressively dwindling water avail-ability. Ideally, the fewer users of irrigation water for agricul-ture, the more abundant irrigation water should be.

party could do nothing. “The matterof irrigation channel repair is beyondour authority. Nevertheless, we willcoordinate the matter with the publicworks,” he explained.

In the meantime, the Head of BaliPublic Works, Ketut Winarta, whenasked for his confirmation said thematter of irrigation was the authorityof Public Works. However, the author-ity of regency/city public works waslimited to only small irrigation chan-nels. Meanwhile, for the area of SubakSembung and Sukun going throughdisturbance was under the authority ofBali Public Works. “Reduction of thewater discharge to the farmland wascaused by the broken culvert in thenorth Daimaru mini market. It belongsto the authority of Bali Public Works. We’ve made coordination and it willbe repaired immediately,” saidWinarta. (kmb12)

Bali’s economy growsby 2.17 percentAgricultural sector the lowest

The data obtained from BPS Baliand authority of Ngurah Rai Airportshowed that passengers departingthrough the airport reached1,526,527 people during the secondquarter of 2011 or an increase of8.54 percent over the first quarterin the same year amounting to1,406,451 people. Such an increasealso occurred to the number of ar-rival passengers that rose by 14.11percent, but the number of transitpassengers dropped by 7.91 percent.

“In the meantime, condition ofthe processing industry in Balicould grow positively by 0.88 per-cent. By and large, this conditionwas supported by foreign touristsvisiting Bali with considerable posi-tive impact on the performance ofmanufacturing sector,” he ex-plained.

Nevertheless, if compared to thesecond quarter of 2010 (year onyear) the growth of agricultural sec-tor occupied the lowest positionnamely 1.50 percent of the Bali’sGDP experiencing 6.42 percentgrowth. Meanwhile, the dominanteconomic sector with high growthoccurred in the mining and quarrysector namely 15.07 percent. “Wethink the lowest growth happenedto agriculture because the produc-tion was declining due to diminish-ing harvest area and weather con-dition,” he added. It estab-lished two management groups tohandle the waterfall attractionconsisting of the Aling-AlingGroup and Cemara Group. Bothgroups were responsible for man-agement of the object, includingthe collection of admission fee ofvisitors. Other than waterfall, thegroup also had a trekking, camp-ing and meditation tourist attrac-tion. In order the contribution ofwaterfall attraction had the legalprotection, in early 2011 the vil-lage made a regulation concern-ing with Sambangan WaterfallTourist Attraction. “Essentially, the regulation organizes the en-tire Sambangan waterfall touristattraction for the benefit of resi-dents as a whole,” said ChiefSelamet Arya.

Interestingly, residents of

Sambangan Village did notonly take advantage of thenatural beauty to be sold totourists. Numerous waterfalls, rivers and springs in the areaalso made the village insepa-rable from the world of agricul-ture. Rice fields in the villagewere winding on the overlay ofhillside and roadside. To thatend, the waterfalls and riverswere persistently well pre-served. Residents routinelyconducted tree planting or re-forestation and always oversawin order the local residents andtourists did not throw anywaste into the r ivers. “Ifsprings discontinue to flow, waterfalls will consequentlystop and then there will be notourism and no agriculture sup-porting this village,” said an-other member of Pokdarwis ofSambangan Village. MONTERREY, Mexico — The dismembered bodies of four youngmen were dumped near a high school and five young men were found deadnear a middle school in two separate incidents in northern Mexico, offi-cials said Saturday.

The severed body parts of four men were stuffed into black garbagebags and dumped about 200 feet (60 meters) from a school in Sinaloa state, said state prosecutor’s office spokesman Martin Gastelum. The men wereages 20 to 25, he said.

The men had been abducted Tuesday by masked assailants in the city ofNavolato, Gastelum said.

The five other bodies were found near a middle school outside the north-ern industrial city of Monterrey, a Nuevo Leon state prosecution officialsaid. They were in the same age range as the bodies discovered in Sinaloaand they all had been shot in the head, said the official, who agreed toconfirm the incident only if he was not quoted by name

There was no sign the incidents were related and schools are currentlyclosed for summer vacation. But youths are increasingly caught up in fight-ing among rival drug cartels in both Sinaloa and Nuevo Leon.

Also Saturday, the Michoacan state prosecutor’s office said seven armedassailants were killed in a shootout with federal police in that western state.

A police convoy that included an armored car was patrolling the mu-nicipality of Tuxpan late Friday when it came upon a camp apparentlybeing used by a gang, prosecutors said. It said the gunmen shot first, aftera shout: “Here come the (men in) blue. Open Fire!”

Open Fire!”

JAKARTA - Indonesia said Friday its economy grew 6.49 percentyear on year in the three months to June thanks to rising exports andinvestment and strong domestic consumption.

“Certainly, the strength of the glo-bal economy is a risk to reckon with, but the prevailing capacity seen inthe domestic economy is likely toform the underlying support forgrowth prospects going into 2012,”Cahyadi told Dow Jones Newswires.

Meanwhile Bank Negara Indone-sia economist Rosady Montol said:“Looking at this growth, we are inquite a positive condition as the glo-bal economy is still under pressure.”

However, he added: “But infra-structure needs to be improved fastin order to book bigger growthahead.”

Montol said that while inflationwas under control “we still have tobe careful with the huge inflows offoreign funds”.

Several emerging nations, includ-ing Indonesia, are concerned at agrowing inflows of foreign capital asinvestors seek better returns on theirinvestments from higher interestrates compared with the West.

However, the International Mon-etary Fund said last month thatIndonesia’s strong fundamentals andrelatively low dependence on exter-nal demand prompted the nation toface limited exposure to a large exitof foreign capital at a time of globalrisk aversion.

The IMF said that Indonesia’sstrong export growth and continuedflexibility of the rupiah’s exchangerate would help protect against vola-tile cash flows.

Indonesia minister defends Ahmadiyah verdictsThe Cambridge-educated min-

ister said “heinous acts” were be-ing committed all over the worlddue to religious intolerance, but hedid not address concerns that lightsentences for hate crimes only en-courage more killings.

“I’m afraid when you speak ofthe whole issue of religious intol-erance and all kinds of phobia...Indonesia doesn’t have a monopolyon that unfortunately,” he said.

A secretly filmed video of therampage in Cikeusik, western Java, sparked international concernwhen it appeared online withindays of the attack.

The footage shows police flee-ing the scene as the enraged mob— armed with machetes and knivesand shouting abuse at the “infidels”— launch an unprovoked attack ona house owned by an Ahmadiyahfollower.

A handful of Ahmadiyah mentried to defend the property withstones and slingshots but they were

quickly overwhelmed. The mob then clubbed, hacked

and stoned three defenceless men todeath in front of police, and stoodaround joking over their bodies. Sev-eral Ahmadiyah tried to flee but werehunted down and badly beaten.

None of the 12 men punished overthe incident was charged with mur-der, and none received more than sixmonths in jail, including the ring-leader and a 17-year-old who wasfilmed smashing a victim’s skullwith a stone.

Prosecutors managed to convincethe court that the video and the vic-tims’ refusal to flee the property jus-tified a reduced sentence for the kill-ers. In the end the sentences wereeven lighter than requested by thestate.

Ahmadiyah, unlike mainstreamMuslims, do not believe Mohammedwas the last prophet and are regardedas heretics and blasphemers by con-servatives in countries such as Indo-nesia and Pakistan.

British politicians and membersof the Ahmadiyah community inEngland released statements on Fri-day warning that such sentencesonly encouraged more violence.

“By meting out ineffectual sen-tences, the Indonesian judiciary hasessentially condoned mob violence

in the name of Islam,” communityrepresentative Rafiq Hayat said.

British politician Eric Lubbock,of the UK All Party ParliamentaryGroup for Human Rights, said theverdicts were a “huge setback forIndonesia and in particular for itsjustice system”.

Berlusconi’s government de-vised a euro70 billion ($99 billion)austerity package last month. Buton Friday, after intense pressurefrom markets and fellow Europeanleaders worried that Italy mightbecome the next victim of Europe’sdebt crisis, Berlusconi agreed tospeed up the process.

“In a month, the world haschanged,” Finance Minister GiulioTremonti said in announcing themeasures alongside Berlusconi onFriday evening.

Crucially, the governmentagreed to bring forward its goal ofbalancing the budget in 2013 in-stead of 2014 as originally planned. It also has promised to make thebalanced budget a constitutionalrequirement.

The measures are seen as pav-ing the way for a possible move bythe European Central Bank to buyItalian bonds in an effort to bringdown the country’s borrowingcosts. The bank has not confirmedthis, but a close Berlusconi ally andItalian Cabinet minister, UmbertoBossi, said the bank “has assuredus that starting Monday it will buyour bonds,” according to the ANSAnews agency and other news re-ports.

The government hopes to gen-erate between euro17 billion andeuro20 billion (between $24 billionand $28 billion ) through cuts to itspensions system, which wasbrought forward to the 2012-2013period. It also will enforce cuts totax breaks.

“Italy is complying with all themain requests of fiscal hawks,” saidAlan Ruskin, an analyst at DeutscheBank, foreseeing a positive impactfor Italy’s bonds. But, he added,“the sheer scale of Italian debt rela-tive to possible future official sup-port will still leave it vulnerable to(monetary union) contagion from

TOKYO/SEOUL - Global policymakers held an emergencyconference call on Sunday to discuss the twin debt crises inEurope and the United States that are causing market turmoiland stoking fears of the rich world sliding back into recession.

economic advisor castigated rat-ings agency Standard and Poor’sfor downgrading the UnitedStates’ credit rating to AA-plusfrom AAA, a move that over timecould ripple through markets bypushing up borrowing costs andmaking it more difficult to securea lasting recovery.

Washington’s Asian allies ral-lied round the battered super-power, with Japan and South Ko-rea both saying their trust in U.S.Treasuries remained unshaken.

“I expressed our country’s po-sition on the (G20 conference) callthat there will be no suddenchange in our reserve managementpolicy,” South Korean Deputy Fi-nance Minister Choi Jong-ku toldReuters by telephone, referring toSeoul’s heavy ownership of U.S.bonds out of more than $300 bil-lion in foreign reserves.

“There’s no alternative thatprovides such stability and liquid-ity,” added Choi, who declined toelaborate further on the G20 dis-cussion.

elsewhere.”Italy’s debt is among the highest

in the eurozone at nearly 120 per-cent of GDP, but poor growth isviewed by many as he overridingissue. Italy is expected to grow onlyby 1 percent this year, according tosome estimates.

The government’s move, an-nounced after the markets hadclosed Friday, capped a week thatsaw the Milan Stock Exchange con-sistently fall. Italy’s borrowing costsrose above Spain’s for the first timein more than a year, heighteningconcerns over the health of theeurozone’s third-largest economy.

Berlusconi said Friday he is opento new ideas, including from hisbitter rivals in the center-left oppo-sition. But it remains unclear howmuch support Berlusconi would getfrom his political adversaries in acountry that, despite calls for na-tional unity, remains highly polar-ized.

After Friday’s announcement, some in the opposition signaled thepossibility of supporting the gov-ernment or working with it, say-ing the new measures marked a de-parture and a step in the right di-rection. But many insist Berlusconifirst must go. Critics sayBerlusconi’s weakened leadership, amid sex scandals and legal woes, adds to the market concerns be-cause it makes it harder for him topass unpopular measures and fo-cus on reforms.

Berlusconi’s five-year termends in 2013, and on Saturday theprime minister dismissed specula-tion he might step down next yearand push for early elections.

“This was never an option,” he

told reporters outside his Romeresidence, according to the ANSAnews agency.

Tremonti is hoping to liberalizethe labor market by reforming theworkers’ chart and making it easierto hire and fire workers. He wantsmore direct negotiations betweencompanies and employees’ unions, rather than the blanket regulationsof the workers’ chart. He alsowants to liberalize services and cutred-tape to set up business —broadening the constitutional pro-vision sanctioning that private en-terprise in Italy is free.

Tremonti is set to present some ofthese proposals next week to parlia-mentary commissions hastily recon-vened despite the summer recess.

However, any constitutionalchange requires a lengthy and com-plex parliamentary procedure and aqualified majority. Berlusconi has amajority in parliament but wouldneed support from some oppositionforces to obtain a qualified majority.

The labor market changes prom-ise to be very divisive because of op-position from at least some unions.Previous attempts to liberalize themarket was met with huge demon-strations.

“In the case of the labor-marketreform, it is not difficult to foresee acomplicated journey and one thatwill potentially be divisive forunions,” said Saturday’s financialdaily Il Sole 24 Ore.

The leader of the largest Italianlabor confederation, SusannaCamusso, wasted no time in criticiz-ing of the new measures. “To moveforward the measure means to de-stroy the country,” she said in anewspaper interview.

Grasslands dominated the cradle of humanity in east Africa longerand more broadly than thought, says a study published Thursday, bol-stering the idea that the rise of such landscapes shaped human evolution.

notion has been debated for morethan a century, however, with somescientists saying other forces weremore important in driving humansto assume their signature posture.

They also point to studies show-ing that the landscapes of the tworegions of east Africa richest inhominid fossils — the Awash Val-ley and The Omo-Turkana Basin, both in Ethiopia — were in factquite diverse in terms of tree cover.

One of the most complete earlyhominin species yet discovered,Ardipithecus ramidus, for example, may have lived primarily inside

woodlands and patches of forest, they argue. Hominins include earlyhumans and pre-humans, alongwith the early ancestors of chim-panzees and gorillas.

The new study, published in Na-ture, will not settle the debate, butit offers evidence that savannahs —with their limited tree cover —stretched back even beyond the fivemillion-year boundary widely as-sumed up to now, especially in ar-eas populated by our distant fore-bear.

“There have been open habitatsfor all of the last six million yearsin the environments in eastern Af-rica where some of the most signifi-cant early human fossils werefound,” said Thure Cerling, a pro-fessor at the University of Utah andlead researcher of the study.

his associates brought a differentputter out to the practice green af-ter a round of 72. Woods was at 1-over 211, which left him 13 shotsbehind Adam Scott going into Sun-day.

What he noticed at Firestone, however, was the shape of his teeshots. Instead of playing a fade or adraw off the tee, depending on theshape of the flight he wanted,Woods is hitting it straighter. Hesaid the trouble was still aiming

right or left.“Still struggling a little bit with

my setup and alignments off of teeshots because I used to curve theball a lot more,” he said. “I don’tcurve the ball as much anymore, andit’s kind of hard to trust when I’mout there in tournament play. Andmost of my shots are missing righton the edges of fairways, so I’ve justgot to get more committed to that.“I’m hitting the ball straighter,” hesaid. “It’s a nice change. But it’s stilla change.”

That was the scouting report outof Atlanta Athletic Club whenWoods played a practice roundMonday ahead of next week’s PGAChampionship. He was having ahard time picking out the right tar-get, instinctively aiming farther out-side the fairway lines because foryears he was used to more move-ment on his shots.

Speaking at Ferrari’s summer press eventat the Madonna di Campaglio, the Spaniardsaid that while the odds were long, it wasstill possible to close the gap if kept win-ning and Red Bull’s driver ran into a barrenspell.

And after all, we are Ferrari andwe have a moral obligation, especially forthe millions of fans spread around the world,to always think of the maximum goal.

HRC team principal Shuhei Nakamoto says Honda must notunderestimate the threat Jorge Lorenzo poses to Casey Stoner’schampionship lead, in spite of the Australian’s superior win ratio- 5:2 – and his 20-point advantage at the top of the standings.

Honda’s RC212V has been the most consistently competitivemotorcycle this season, but Yamaha’s reigning champion Lorenzohas finished no lower than second in the last three races and re-mains within striking distance of Stoner with eight races – justunder half the campaign - still to go.

“Honda has won seven out of ten races so far,” said Nakamoto.“Considering we only won four in the whole of the last season, you’d think we have it in the bag. But Lorenzo is a very toughcompetitor.

“He’s not going to give up, and I think we will continue to seea pattern of wins and losses for the rest of the season. A singleslip could upset the whole championship battle.

“We’re going to be treating every race with the utmost seri-ousness, concentrating on avoiding any mistakes that could costus points.”

While there is a perception that Stoner’s recent win in LagunaSeca was made easier by his closest rivals Lorenzo and DaniPedrosa nursing injuries in the closing stages, Nakamoto alsoinsisted that Stoner has not been riding niggle-free.

“Actually, Casey still has physical problems remaining from hiscrash in practice at Assen, and he still feels pain when he rides,” hesaid. “So the two week break will be an excellent chance for him toget himself back into perfect condition. It’s good timing.

“With the chance afforded by the summer break for more physi-cal training, I think we’ll also see Dani soon return to his originalform. If that happens, the coming races will all be fought be-tween Dani, Casey and Jorge. All three riders are quite capable ofwinning.”

this. Though he added that as a team, Ferrariis well on its way to returning to that status.

“Formula 1 is too complicated a sport tomake declarations,” he said. “It requires ev-eryone to give their all in order to win andthe genius of an individual is not enough. Ifyou look at Adrian Newey, it’s not a case ofhim turning up at Red Bull and at a stroke, creating a winning car with a magic wand. Ittook years for all the team to reach the levelit is at now.

“It takes great people, structures and, clearly a little pinch of genius. I am convincedwe too have that genius.” Asked how he ratedFerrari’s campaign so far, Alonso said: “Anine or a 10 can go to those who lead thechampionship, but this has not been such abad a season for us so far.

“Sure, the beginning was very difficult: wehad hoped for a better start but we did notmanage it,” he continued. “In China we wentthrough what was possibly the worst point, because not only were we not fighting for thewin with McLaren and Red Bull, but we werealso behind Mercedes and maybe Renault, who had already scored two podium finishes. However, after that, we reacted well.

“We still lack a little something in all ar-eas, including from the drivers, to be at thelevel of the best. However, I feel much morepart of the team than I did a year ago. In termsof driving, I don’t think I’ve ever been thisstrong.”
