Issue 2 January 21st 2020
Hi all - welcome to issue two of ‘The Final Countdown’!
See inside today’s edition for the top revision websites as recommended by your teachers at HCC. There’s another selection of hardworking students published in our ’Top Job’ section and there’s also useful revision guidance, hints and tips inside too.
The opportunity is still available for you to say a thank you to any mem-ber of staff who you feel has helped you on your journey in our ’Big Thanks’ section. Post these positive comments in the folder on Ms. Mal-lon’s office door or email them to Ms Mallon.
Strangely, in this edition, we would also like to talk to you about breakfast. This may not immediately seem like a very important subject when discussing your progress and attainment in school but, in fact, it is an essential ingredient for your success this year. Did you know that if you do not eat breakfast in the morning, by 11 o’clock your brain and reflexes are functioning at the same capacity as a seventy year old? Your body will slow itself down because it has not had the energy it needs to work properly. This means that you will not be able to concentrate as well in your lessons. Not having breakfast plays a major part in students’ underachievement in school. Breakfast is an essential part of the learning process.
What do we mean by breakfast? Well, it is not a fizzy drink or a packet of crisps on the way to school. No, it is yoghurt, toast, cereal (as long as it doesn’t turn the milk chocolatey). Sugary foods, or those that contain a lot
of caffeine, actually make it harder to concentrate in lessons. When you are in school, we want you to be getting the maximum benefit out of all of your lessons and, to do that, your brain and body need to be functioning at their best. So make sure you eat—and eat appropri-ately—in the morning!

Ms Mallon
Each issue of your ‘Final Countdown’ will provide you with relevant and useful advice, hints and tips in the run up to the exam season. This edi-
tion it’s help on revision strategies. With the mocks fast approaching (Monday 24th February), it’s time to get revising!
There are loads (and I mean, loads) of knowledge organisers available for you to down‐
load from the internet. These are vis‐
ual ways of displaying key informa on
about a specific topic on (usually) one
side of A4 paper. You could even cre‐
ate your own knowledge organiser
which would further help out with
your revision.
Simply divide your A4 sheet up into
key areas for each of your topics and
gather the necessary informa on to
complete it.
Watch out ! Make sure you find a gen‐
eral knowledge organiser or one specific to the exam board that you are studying. Don’t
be revising styles of ques ons for the wrong exam board!
Year 11—if you are looking for an apprenticeship when you leave school, now is the time to start looking. Listed below are some of the websites to search: www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship www.setatraining.com/ www.gceducationandskills.ac.uk/apprenticeships/ remit.co.uk/automotive/our-apprenticeships/ www.tameside.ac.uk/Pages/School_Leavers/earn_while_you_learn/apprenticeship_vac www.tmc.ac.uk/qualifications/apprenticeships stockport.ac.uk/apprenticeships Please note 'National Apprenticeship Week 2020 is to be held on 3 to 7 Febru-ary 2020', which means lots of open evenings and events. Do you have or require a CV or need help with an application form? Do you already have an offer of either college / FE college / apprenticeship / traineeship or other? If not, please can you let Miss Amdurer know as soon as possible.
Write down your worries -then throw the paper away or give it to someone you trust.
Draw a picture of how you want to feel or what you want to happen.
Go for a walk or do some exercise.
Listen to calming music.
Go and do something you enjoy—have a break from it all.
Remember that everyone is different -try not to compare yourself to your friends.
Make a list of what you have to do and tick it off. Talk to someone about your stress *parents / carers / family *form tutor *teacher *friend *learning mentor
1.Plan your study e.g. revision timetable, scheduling subjects into manageable chunks. 2. Help improve concentration-sit at the same place, at the same time for study so your mind is tuned into the environment. Put all distractions out the way—especially your phone and other forms of social media! 3.Do your difficult subjects first: avoid postponing, ask for help from teachers, friends, experts. 4.Know your stuff –It is much easier to revise if you understood the content to start with—research it if you don’t and ask your teachers to help out! 5.Take rest breaks—obviously not too many! 6.Eat the right types of food e.g. healthy snacking-fruit, wholesome meals. 7.Have a positive attitude: Think and feel like you’ve already succeeded, stop comparing yourself to others. It’s never too late to start! 8.Talk with your family and teachers: Talk openly about your fears and concerns and share your aspirational goals.
