OUR FOCUS

ST. ISIDORE CHURCH MACOMB, MICHIGAN 2

“JESUS IS RISEN” “HE IS RISEN INDEED”This traditional Easter Greeting captures the joy that we celebrate on this Easter Sunday, the highest feast of the Liturgical Year. We celebrate that Jesus lives, and that we can come to know his presence in our lives. Because of the Resurrection, Jesus is present to us in an entirely new way. While Jesus was with us in his body, in order to encounter Jesus, people had to go where Jesus was and be introduced to him. But now that he is no longer with us physically, but in the spirit, he is immediately accessible to all of us at all times! “He is Risen Indeed”.

The joy of Easter, of the victory of life over death, and of God’s grace over sin, is so great that twenty four hours cannot contain it! So first we celebrate the “Octave of Easter”. Beginning today, and continuing for eight days, through next Sunday, we celebrate as though it is one day, Easter Sunday. And then we continue to celebrate Easter for a total of fifty days!

ST. ISIDORE CHURCH MACOMB, MICHIGAN 4

Our Easter celebration continues until the Solemnity of Pentecost on May 20th. In Church time, Easter is not a day, it is a season! A fifty-day long season of joy and of the Holy Spirit. It is important that we maintain this joyful spirit throughout the entire season.

One of our parish highlights during this season will be the celebration of First Eucharist with our second graders on April 21 and April 28. Please keep our First Communicants in your prayers as we prepare to welcome them to the Lord’s table for the first time as we celebrate with them this Easter Sacrament..

Our attention as a parish during this season is also on our “neophytes”, the newly-baptized and received members of our community with whom we celebrated the Easter sacraments at the Easter Vigil. Our neophytes will be wearing their white baptismal garments (robes) to Mass throughout the Easter Season. Please take time to greet them and welcome them, and to pray for them.

We remind you that we will add a SUNDAY NIGHT MASS: “A Mass for the Busy Catholic”, to our weekend Mass schedule beginning on Pentecost, May 20. The Mass will be celebrated at 5:30 PM, a better time for those, especially our young families, who have busy weekend schedules, or for those who will be returning home from out of town on Sunday evening.

EASTER JOY!Fr. Ron Victor

CSA MINUTE Easter is a time of great joy, when we are reminded that the Lord walks beside us on our journey of faith.

We witness Christ’s living presence in many ways, such as through our support of our local communion of faith through the Catholic Services Appeal. Our annual CSA supports the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, which brings new members into full communion during the Easter Vigil. The CSA enables us to reveal Christ’s presence not only to our sisters and brothers with whom we share the Eucharist, but also to those who do not know Christ.

Gifts to the CSA show that Christ is present and active in our world. Indeed, He is risen today. Alleluia!

For more information about CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to www.aod.org.

APRIL 1, 20185 EASTER

DEACON BILL [email protected]

WHERE TO FROM HERE? For some people, the transition from Lent to Easter will go unnoticed except for getting dressed up and going to church (or just going to church sans the coat and tie). This description can apply to those who only seem to go to church on Easter as it can apply to those who go to church every week. For some people, the transition from Lent to Easter time is a profound resurgence of energy. For many, there is a whole lot of “judging” taking place, regardless of where one is on the spectrum of attending church. Judging others is one of the more difficult attitudes to overcome as a Christian. To many people, “holiness” is a quality of “righteousness”, an aspect of “piety (not piousness)”. Scripturally though, “holiness” is a quality of “being reserved”, of “being called out”. Israel was “holy to God” even when she was most unrighteous and rebellious. [As parents, perhaps we can understand this through recognizing that regardless of how angry and frustrated we may be with our children, they are still our children.] In this context of holiness, objects can also be legitimately considered “holy”. In the February 5, 2018 issue of America Magazine, in an article by Brianne Jacobs, What Catholic social teaching says about sexual harassment (p 10), she crystalizes the core of Catholic Social teaching around the nucleus of a single perception: “…every person has innate and infinite dignity imparted by God.” From this fundamental understanding of humanity, she proposes the following: “All actions in and by society may be judged as just or unjust, good or sinful, based on whether they uphold this fundamental dignity intrinsic to every human life.” An aspect that follows, in my own understanding, is that only God can rightfully define what is truly holy or not, called out and reserved, or expendable. Some people and some religions argue that God created all, therefore “all is holy to the Lord”. I do not argue against this understanding, but I would propose further that it is only the human person that has been created in the image and likeness of God, and therefore the human person is the true “holy one” to God. My invitation then, is directed to all those who regularly or irregularly attend a church service, Catholic or otherwise. My invitation (and challenge to myself) is to begin again to inculcate this fundamental understanding of humanity: we are all special to God. This quality of specialness is not a function of our “righteousness”, it is not mitigated by our sinfulness. This is the fundamental and defining quality of humanity; we are special to God. My own personal understanding of Easter is the RESSURECTION. The Passion and death on the Cross is the measure of both our human sin, and God’s willingness to forgive. But the RESSURECTION is the validation that God is capable of delivering on His promises. Entering into the Easter Mystery is then, much more than simply believing that Jesus rose from the dead, it is, to me, letting this truth of God’s power and God’s love draw me more deeply into making a difference in how I not only see people, but also how I respond to their needs, their different views, their personalities. Easter is beautiful, but where do we go from here?
