FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH
Welcome in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Bibles (blue cover) and hymnbooks (brown cover) are provided for your use.
A nursery is available in the lower hall for infants and toddlers.
Washrooms are also located in the lower hall.
If you wish to have a cushion or hard of hearing headset, please speak to one of the ushers who will be happy to obtain these items for you.
We invite you to complete one of the blue Visitor Cards in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate toward the end of the worship service. This will help us get to know you better!
Please silence cell phones and other electronics. Speak softly, move slowly and allow each one present to listen for God’s voice.
Many people have allergies to fragrances and perfumes, so we try to keep our church a scent-free zone in consideration of the health and wellbeing of others! Thank you!
Should you wish to have someone pray with or for you, today’s Deacon-on-Duty will be pleased to meet with you following the worship service. Please come to the front, west side pew.
Perhaps this prayer may help you begin your preparation today: “Almighty God, two thousand years ago faithful women announced the astonishing good news of Jesus’ resurrection – and the world
was changed forever! Grant us grace that we may celebrate joyfully
with them today, and keeping faith with them, boldly tell others
this good news. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord. Amen.”

The Great Thanksgiving
Minister: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Minister: Lift up your hearts!
People: We lift them up to the Lord!
Minister: Let us pray
Minister: It is a right, good and joyful thing, always and everywhere
to give thanks to You, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. We thank You that You sent Your son Jesus who came to us in spite
of our destructive ways. In the brief time that He was with us, Jesus sided with the oppressed, had compassion for those who suffer, and
gave dignity to those disregarded by society. He taught us the way of light and life. But in spite of this He was betrayed by one of His own.
He was lied about, tortured, and hung on a cross to die. But on the morning of the third day Jesus rose from death and walked among
us alive! Forty days later He ascended into heaven, where He is
seated at Your right hand. We wait for the day when Jesus will return and establish His rule in full, where sickness and disease,
evil and suffering and oppression are unknown, and where all good things in this world will find a place. And so, with the faithful
departed, with all Your people on earth and all the angels of heaven, we praise Your name saying:
All: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of Your glory, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is
Jesus who came and will come again in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Minister: Father, in remembrance of Your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, in His name, and in joyful anticipation of the coming
kingdom, we offer ourselves completely and fully to Him, living sacrifices, with praise and thanksgiving as we proclaim the mystery
of our faith:
5
All: Christ has died! Christ is risen! Christ will come again!
Amen!

kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we

Endless is the vict’ry Thou o’er death hast won.
Lo! Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb; Lovingly He greets us, scatters fear and gloom;

LEARNING FOR LIFE
“Living Faith From Hebrew Words” – facilitated by Annabel Robinson Who hasn’t known hard times? In my personal experience I’ve been sustained by some great truths from the Scriptures, particularly the Psalms. This class invites you into a conversation about faith and doubt, security and fear, hope and despair.
We’ll base the discussion around some foundational ideas that come again and again in the Bible, exploring the richness of some Hebrew words that have no simple English translation. These words will include the Hebrew ideas that are translated love, covenant, faith/faithfulness, mercy/compassion, truth, peace, righteousness/justice, humility, grace. These are qualities of God. We’ll invite you to share testimonies of how these words of Scripture have sustained you in practice. We’ll go to look at the way these ideas are picked up and enriched in the New Testament. We’ll consider how God calls us to live out these qualities in our own lives.
It’s my prayer that you’ll come away from this study with a fresh understanding of the grace that infuses the Old Testament as well as the New. I pray that you will be encouraged and helped in your prayers and in everyday life.

Tom Chen’s Testimony
My name is Tom Chen and I grew up in a small town in Saskatchewan that had 2
churches; a Catholic Church and a United Church. My mother grew up in the
Buddhist Faith in a Japanese community and, as a belief system was important to
her, so should it be for us. She arranged through friends and neighbours that we
could accompany them to attend the United Church and learn about God and Jesus
Christ.
After high school I met and married a Catholic girl, attended the Catholic
Church and we raised and baptized 2 children in the Catholic faith. Our church
community became a very important part of our lives and we participated through
many avenues in our church community to enrich our lives and that of others. I
went through the RCIA process (Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults) and
converted to Catholicism in 1990.
After our children grew up and left home and I lost my wife to cancer, I
retired from my work as a pharmacist. I met Barb Ziolkowski and started attending
First Baptist Church with her. From my first service I felt welcomed into her church
community and was awe struck with the music ministry of John Nelson, the way
Joel delivered God's message to the children and Mark's wonderful sermon. I soon
found myself attending my old church, Good Samaritan, less and less and First
Baptist more and more. Barb was already quite involved with activities and
ministries, so I soon found myself volunteering alongside. I have met so many
people and made many new friends through my new association with the First
Baptist community. I find the order of service very familiar and embrace the Baptist
freedoms; bible freedom, soul freedom, religious freedom and especially church
freedom, free to determine how First Baptist operates, embracing Baptist doctrines
while under the Lordship of Christ.
I am looking forward to becoming a member of First Baptist Church and
continuing to serve God.
