INTERVIEW7

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Dominique Worcester,

Co-Founder of Truce for an exclusive interview

What inspired you to create Truce?

Total love of fashion. But wanting something individual, creative and beautifully crafted.

Truce is a boutique, semi couture high fashion label based in Notting Hill. Our clothes are vibrant and quirky with an understated chic sophistication.

Our biannual collections consist of the finest handcrafted cashmere from Scotland and beautifully designed, dresses, skirts and tops. We offer an opportunity to acquire unique, one-off pieces made by seamstresses in the UK that are feminine and easy to wear.

How do you select your designs?

My partner and I work as a team and our collection is a joint collaboration. It originates with finding inspiring unique fabrics; we then work on the shape & design looking for new and flattering shapes.

What do you look for when you go fashion shopping?

90% of the clothes I wear are from our own collection. I am a big fan of J Brand jeans and I love Prada and Miu Miu shoes.

What are your ambitions for Truce in 2014?

Truce offers a very personal one-to-one service to our clients. Quality and attention to detail are paramount, everything is sourced and produced in the UK. During 2014 we want to continue to develop our brand & web site.

What advice do you have for aspiring young fashion designers?

Be creative, take inspiration from anywhere and everything, don’t be afraid to be original, over time develop your own style. Above all if you are passionate about being a designer, be prepared to stick with it.

What makes a perfect weekend for you?

A weekend in the country with my husband, daughters Lily & Poppy and standard poodles (Tula & Billy).

INTERVIEW

Page 11: HBCP The Fashion Issue 2013

11

How have you developed the brand since the company was founded?

I purchased the company in 1999. At the time it had established a strong reputation for producing quality stainless steel hip flasks. I wanted to expand the range and develop the brand as a producer of luxury products. As part of this I started to cover all the stainless steel flasks in leather. This proved to be a very popular decision and customer orders for the leather hip flasks began growing very well.

Following this I wanted to expand the range and moved into producing leather bags. This included tote and weekend bags. More recently we have launched new products such as satchels, shoulder bags and bucket bags.

Our range now includes various home and office accessories as well these include leather picture frames, iPad and iPhone cases and desk blotters and stationary holders.

With everything we do I always insist on the highest possible quality to ensure that we meet the expectations of our customers. As we make everything by hand we have been able to deliver consistently on this.

What traditional skills have you retained in your manufacturing process?

Everything we make is hand made this means that right from cutting the hide with a knife through to hand stitching and finally onto packing. This means we are able to ensure quality at each stage of the production process.

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Richard Taylor, Managing

Director, Marlborough World for an exclusive interview.

The skills we have been able to retain in our manufacturing process influence every aspect of how we produce the products. For example with material selection our staff are able to pick out the types of leather suited to a particular product based on what the product is, how will the product be used and where on the product the most wear will occur.

Another good example is in our finishing department where instead of leaving the edges of the leather unfinished which means that it will fray and come apart over time we seal the edges with a special ink. This ink is absorbed into the leather and seals it thus stopping fraying and prolonging the life of the leather.

Its little touches like this that comes from having staff who are highly trained and experienced that really makes a difference and stands us out against the competition.

Page 12: HBCP The Fashion Issue 2013

12

How would you like the company to develop in the future?

I would like to make Marlborough World into a global brand. We currently sell into a few countries but not everywhere I would like. So my priority over the next few months is to look at how we can export our products in to other parts of the world.

I am also aiming to start developing Marlborough Leather Academy which will provide courses and training materials for people to learn how to make their own leather products. These courses would be run at my workshop where the students will be able to use the traditional leather working tools and see how we handcraft our products.

Eventually I would like to grow this into a full leather training academy to make sure that the skills and expertise my staff have are passed on to new generations and to make sure that England keeps its reputation for superior quality leather products.

What advice would you give to businesses looking to develop a heritage brand in the modern world?

My main piece of advice would be that if you are trying to develop a genuine heritage brand you need to stay to true to the traditional methods of making your product.

It is very easy to see the savings associated with mass production in countries with lower wages costs however part of what makes Marlborough unique is that we make everything in the UK and that we still uses traditional tools and working methods.

What makes a perfect weekend for you?

The perfect weekend for me involves spending time with my family and catching up on what has been happening in their week.

INTERVIEW

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Lizzie Hammond, Co-Founder

of Suffolk Cottage Holidays for an exclusive interview.

Page 25: HBCP The Fashion Issue 2013

What inspired you to create Suffolk Cottage Holidays?

Born and living in north west London John and I had always loved Suffolk for its open skies, quiet painterly landscapes and fine food. With successful marketing and communication careers under our belts we moved to Woodbridge around 20 years ago with the idea of setting up a small business and refurbishing a traditional Suffolk farmhouse which we could enjoy with our family and friends.

As a first step we purchased a cottage in a delightful rural village near Woodbridge close to the Deben river; our intention to extend the cottage and buy something bigger. But the owners were using it as a self catering cottage and had several bookings in the diary when we purchased. We agreed to honour the bookings and did some marketing to fill some additional weeks.

John set about developing a website when all around us were relying on brochures and within six months we were marketing our own cottage and six others in and around Woodbridge. We have continually worked on improving our websites, developing our own systems and thus ensuring that with every innovation the booking process becomes more pleasurable, informative, quicker, easier and secure for both owners and holidaymakers

How do you select your properties?

Well the first thing is quality. Suffolk Cottage Holidays Look for properties with attractive finishes, comfortable beds and bedding, upmarket bathrooms and well equipped kitchens. But just as important for us is to find properties which will give the holidaymaker a taste of the area. We at Suffolk Cottage Holidays look for properties which are quirky, luxurious or simply a wonderful reflection of the countryside they inhabit.

People really enjoy cottages with an interesting history - a 16th century thatched village post office or a traditional coastguard cottage. But we also like to include some really individual properties and this year we have taken on a prize winning Martello tower, a uniquely styled glass beach house with indoor heated pool, sauna and gym and an outstandingly designed barn conversion in one of what is probably the most attractive village in mid Suffolk.

Suffolk has such glorious countryside, delightful towns and villages and stunning coastline so we look for properties which allow the holidaymaker to enjoy such experiences by simply stepping outside their front doors.

What do you look for when you book a holiday.

A tricky one! We are so spoilt living in Suffolk. Somewhere where we can walk to a great pub or restaurant or buy interesting quality local produce when we want to eat in. We both love walking particularly by the water so the coast is always attractive and of course a good network of attractive footpaths is a must. We love the theatre and music so it is great to find somewhere with an exciting local arts scene.

What are your ambitions for 2014?

Suffolk Cottage Holidays has several exciting new properties being prepared for letting in 2014. We will also be launching an even more user friendly website booking system at www.suffolkcottageholidays.com at the start of the year and we are looking forward to developing further the wealth of information we provide for all visitors to the area through our growing family of magazine websites which cover both the coast and the countryside www.visit-suffolkcoast.co.uk and www.visit-Suffolkcountryside.co.uk as well as our individual town and village sites such as www.visit-aldeburgh.co.uk.

Page 26: HBCP The Fashion Issue 2013

What are the special qualities about a holiday in Suffolk?

We are just 100 miles or so from London and the Midlands; just over an hour by train from London Liverpool Street yet the county remains unspoilt. Suffolk offers the antidote to the freneticism of city life. There is a sense of peace and oneness with the natural surroundings and yet there is always something going on; there’s a thriving arts scene with poetry, film and literary festivals throughout the year, a superb selection of world class theatre and music as well as a host of sporting opportunities including some of the best sailing in the country. As for food, we enjoy a wonderful choice of local produce, fine beers including Adnams and Greene King, and have excellent restaurants and charming pubs. If you want to unwind, relax and revitalise then Suffolk is the place to go

What makes a perfect weekend for you?

We don’t get a lot of time off so every free moment is precious to us but our perfect weekend would probably involve family and friends (they are always happy to come and stay, partly I suspect because they all seem to love Suffolk). If our children visit they usually come up on the train and we meet up in Woodbridge for a drink at one of the pubs close to the river (they don’t feel they are in Suffolk until they have tasted Adnams beer); We usually order a take away curry (they are so good) and then go back home and catch up on news and views.

Saturday will include a long lazy breakfast, a good estuary or seaside walk or in the winter a wander round one of the lovely historic Suffolk towns which often means we end up in a gallery, pottery or antique shop (usually expensive as we always seem to find something we MUST have). There are loads of excellent eateries close by so to give us a really relaxing weekend we would normally go out for supper in Orford or Woodbridge. Depending on the weather we might go sailing, potter around the garden or read before walking to the pub (40 minutes each way) for lunch. In winter we watch the rugby and catch up with the papers in the afternoon. In summer we would normally go to the beach. Time has to be made for guests to buy their smoked fish and bread in Orford and meats in Woodbridge - they always love to take some Suffolk goodies home with them.

By Sunday evening we are happy to curl up with a good book and a glass of wine in the garden house in summer or in front of the roaring fire in winter.

Can’t get more perfect than that!
