Hello style!Fashion! Fashion and more fashion is what April was all about and we enter the month of May all stylish and glamorous. It’s like watching one of those amazing movies (p.44) that make you think you can pull off any look regardless of your shape or size because, obviously, you look just like the character playing the main role. You leave the house feeling confidently unstoppable and couple your amazingness with great music (p.14) on your iPad that you listen to as you walk to your destination with great pride. You feel wonderful until this gorgeous person walks right next to you wearing a white t-shirt and jeans and looks absolutely stunning. You start thinking: ‘is it really worth the pain?’ At the end of the day all we’re looking for is that feeling of awesomeness and what better way to achieve that emotion than a superhero costume (p.22)? Think about it. If you wear Iron Man’s (p.44) red suit, wouldn’t you feel unbeatable? If I had that suit I would have flown on stage and performed with Metallica (p.19).

I realised how ‘fashion backward’ I was when it was time to go to Fashion Forward (p.26), which was overflowing with the most beautiful designs you can ever lay your eyes on. Amazing designers like Amato, Michael Cinco, Essa and many more displayed their breathtaking couture art. I had a major panic attack thinking about what I should wear, just like an 18 year old in the wrong place at the wrong time (p.56). Then I realized that it was not the outfit that would make me feel good and all I needed was thirty minutes of an Xbox fix (p.8). I was definitely in my element by the time we went to Dreamland Aqua Park for our own laid-back fashion shoot (p.30).

A letter from a parentThank you very much for letting my daughter join the photo shoot. It was a good experience for her. Modeling was one of her dreams and she was so happy that it came true. She is quite shy and didn’t have self-esteem but she feels much better and happier than before.

Having never interned before, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I imagined a typical office set up with my own desk and computer, working away in silence until my lunch break. Interning at one8one was quite different to this. I learnt several things during my first day at one8one magazine which left me eagerly anticipating more. The magazine encapsulates everything I love, from music and movies to art and culture. I thrive on challenges: my favorite kind of workplace is the kind that keeps me on my toes; the kind that keeps my mind churning. The experience I had at my internship was invaluable. I learned new things and met some amazing people along the way.

Roof Over Heads FoundationThe Roof Over Heads Foundation (ROHF) is an initiative led by

Dubai’s very own, Mohammed Khan, aka Asad. He single handedly created this foundation in a school-based platform at the Dubai

International Academy (DIA). Asad is currently in Year 11 and aims to make the Roof Over Heads Foundation a full pledged charity

when he graduates.

The Roof Over Heads Foundation has multiple aims, but their primary aim is to help the Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation

build the UAE’s first ever orphanage through financial measures. It has recently held a ‘Help For Workers Month’ at DIA where they

collected donated materials form students and distributed them to the workers of Dubai. This scheme proved a huge success but the

Roof Over Heads Foundation was not done yet. The Roof Over Heads Foundation has big plans and is currently planning a carnival they

will host later this year.

The Roof Over Heads Foundation was officially founded on the 4th of December 2012 and they need your help in achieving their goals.

International Horizons College (IHC) Dubai hosted the Big Idea Amazing Stars 2013 on the 19th & 20th of April 2013. The idea behind the awards was to facilitate exceptional talent across the UAE in the age group of 5 to 17 years. Over 1,000 children registered across 8 categories and show cased their talents.

IHC, a highly selective college, opened and began classes in January 2013. High school juniors and seniors can now realize their dream to study in the US at elite universities after completing the first two years of a bachelors degree in Dubai. Mr. Hany Syed, the founding partner & Dr. Michael Dobe, the President of IHC Dubai presented awards at the event.

ICT fund for Mohammed bin Rashid Smart Learning ProgramICT fund, a TRA initiative, signed AED 53 million funding agreement towards the initial phase of Mohammed bin Rashid Smart Learning Program as part of its strategy to support national projects.

The Smart Learning team recently completed its development plan phase with the addition of 14 schools in its second phase to its network which included extensive evaluations. As part of the process, the team performed a number of visits to countries with distinguished experience in the field of smart learning such as South Korea, Australia, UK and Turkey. In cooperation with the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, the Smart Learning team is working to equip schools with smart devices such as computers and tablets, smart boards for classrooms, high-speed Internet, in addition to the development of an advanced network information center.

The second phase of the program will include integrating 30 classes, 800 students and 80 teachers across eight schools within the Mohammed Bin Rashid Smart Learning Program network.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon

(Xbox 360, PS3, PC)

A standalone shooter, cliche filled 80’s VHS vision of the future game that has cyborgs, blood dragons, mutants

and stars Michel Biehn- everything you expect in a VHS era. It takes place in a bizarre open-world island crawling with evil. It is 2007 and you are playing as a Mark IV Cyber Commando, Sargent Rex Colt, fighting against a rogue cyborg army to save the girl and the

world. You don’t need Far Cry 3 to play the game.

Gears of War: Judgment (Xbox 360)

Gears of War: Judgement is a new style for the Gears of War game, it is your traditional GOW multiplayer experience, this may upset a few diehard fans but the game brings a few new features that make it more enjoyable. First off the addition of ‘Declassified’ missions has added a fun take on the game development. These missions are optional, but if completed, unlock various multiplayer items.

Another addition is the overrun mode which consists of Locust and COG which allow you to gain ‘points’ for completing various objectives as well as killing and healing people. You can use these points in the Locust mode to upgrade but in COG mode it is only used as a competition to see who gets the highest.

Soul Sacrifice (PS Vita)

Soul Sacrifice opens in a post-apocalypse world and those who are still alive are imprisoned. Your character is a mage waiting, like the rest, to be fed to the sorcerer

Magusar. The only chance of escape is a strange dusty old book, a sentient journal named Librom- one of Magusar’s

fellow sorcerers. You have to relive the past to learn of a way to escape your imprisonment.

Through the journal, you can select missions, create characters, and read about ‘lore’ on enemies, locations

and more.

Fast & Furious: Showdown (Wii U, Xbox 360, PS3)

The game is a tie in with the movie FF 6 which was released at the same time in cinemas. The game servers as a bridge between the older films and the new FF 6, and allows you to experience the story from different characters view points. The publishers have confirmed it to be a 2-player co-op game with high-stakes driving in epic locations, and will be able to switch modes between driver, gunman, tactician and daredevil. Players will also be able to upgrade, modify their cars and participate in challenges.

Resident Evil: Revelations (PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U)

Resident Evil: Revelations fans will be happy to know that this game, which was an exclusive game for Nintendo 3Ds, is now available for Wii

U, Xbox 360 and PS3. Revelations takes place in between Resident Evil 4 and 5. It revolves around Jill Valentine and her new partner Parker

Lucian who are sent to investigate the disappearance of Chris Redfield and Jessica Sherawat on the SS Queen Zenobia. While investigating

they find several B.O.Ws infected with the T-Abyss virus, a marine version of the deadly T-Virus.

His newest album ‘Paris by Night’, released this year, is a musical project full of Parisian flavors.

In fifteen years, this 43-year-old Frenchman has succeeded at establishing himself in the music

industry. His music is far from being a simple pumped-up jam for dancing and has more of an upbeat French touch. Bob Sinclar sat down with

our intern, Serena, to talk about his career and what gets him out of bed everyday.

How do you define music?Music is all the emotions of life. Nothing more, nothing less.

What made you first realise that you wanted to pursue a career in music? 1988 was the first time I saw a DJ spinning records, scratching vinyls; that’s what I wanted to do. But I didn’t plan on making it a career, because you had no vision, you had no expectation. I bought vinyls and started to make my own mix tapes, it was just a hobby at the time. For me it was like a puzzle just to create instrumentals. But all this and no career plan, because it was spur of the moment. You couldn’t plan or expect anything. 500 DJs around the world were playing in different clubs and most of them were in the UK because England was just the right place for this market. In France, we were really late as electronic music did not exist, because we didn’t have independent labels. It was all about major companies, and major companies didn’t understand anything about that type of music. I wanted to play more African music, and it was really hard for me to play that in a club as a resident DJ. So, step by step, I worked on a lot of projects and Bob Sinclar came as a disco project, which hit all the clubs. I started to earn a little bit of money after six years of nothing except passion. You can have a career but it’s hard, it’s hard because there are a lot of upcoming DJs; you have to create your own image, as a brand to be requested as a DJ for a show.

Think back to your early childhood, what was your first experience with music like? What song do you remember most as a child?When MTV played Michael Jackson for the first time with the song Thriller, and the music video itself, I was amazed. DJ Premier also inspired me to create beats.

How do you like to enjoy your time away from music? I play tennis.

What was one of your first milestones? In 2005 my tracks ‘Love Generation’ and ‘World, Hold On’ hit the charts. 2006 with ‘Rock This Party’ to 2007 with ‘Sound Of Freedom’. I was thrilled because when you have that kind of ‘mega hit’ you feel like you’re on a flying carpet. Three years, I was on a roll, and I hit the charts.

So what are you up to at the moment? My latest album ‘Paris By Night’ is a collaboration with young artists in the music scene. I’m going to play it tonight, I am very excited. It’s very close to Africanism but with a lot of burlesque, cabaret. That Charlie Chaplin vibe.

What advice would you give to young and aspiring DJs and producers? To be different! Listen to classical records, and look for inspiration everywhere.

And if they want to be successful?Success is unattainable, if you want to ‘make it’, it’s all about passion. If you are positive and hardworking, I think the rest will come to you. This is my way of thinking.

We Need to Talk About Kevin was…absolutely chilling. Engrossing and eerie, a woman suffers through hate and sadness because of the fault of her son who committed several acts of murder. Then the question is asked, if a teenager is perfectly responsible for his actions, is the mother to blame? Visually brilliant, it uses a very abstract red which was haunting yet alluring.

Cast: Sam Rockwell, Kevin Spacey, Dominique McElligott

Moon was brilliant. Sam is left on the moon for three years to help control the amount of HE3 energy to be sent to Earth as a source of power, but loneliness consumes and a secret is to be exposed. Not much can be said without ruining the ending, but it is a well-made film with stunning special effects, a fantastic script and great acting. Recommended for sci-fi fans.

Cast: Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes, Anthony Pizza

This is an instant American classic. A motorcyclist recently quits his job at the carnival after he finds out he has a son. He supports his son by robbing banks. Now this is only half of the story as there is a major plot shift for the rest of the film. We don’t get the realistic drama we felt in Blue Valentine, but we do get a very complex story that is just as fantastic. Highly recommended.

Well, this is a pleasant surprise. David Bowie has already released a new album in March and one of the tracks, called ‘Where Are We Now?’, is a gorgeous, melancholic ballad that looks back on Bowie’s years. The music video for the song shows much of the mentioned places, along with lyrical accompaniment. What’s amazing here is just how strong this track is – so many artists decide to go one last time in to the fray a late in life and it all comes out sounding muddled and misplaced, but here Bowie sounds as vital as ever, almost as if he’s content to say goodbye and really making it count. This is stunning music.

New Kurt Vile will always be a reason to get excited. In the new single, ‘Never Run Away’ from ‘Wakin on a Pretty Daze’,

finds Kurt in his natural element – a laid back guitar line that carries with it a sense of urgency, but also a hold-it-it-can-wait vibe at the same time, all the while a memorable chorus spins the track closer to a straight up pop anthem.

A lovely melody flown over a pretty guitar jangle and vocals that feel like a comforting pat on the back during a

melancholic revelation. All in all, definitely another album to look forward to.

My favorite way to listen to a new album for the first time is to lay down, turn down the lights, ignore the outside

world for a while, and just focus on the music. Luckily this happened to be the perfect setting for the latest Local

Natives’ album Hummingbird.

While this is no album to dance to and I’ll be honest, it’s probably not what I’d reach for when in a good mood;

it truly is an incredible record full of emotion and instrumentation that is guaranteed to make you feel

something. I urge everyone to take the time and really listen to Hummingbird.

My Music X festival was a great event for all music fans in Dubai. The event incorporated three different parts; The Academy, The Village and Live Performances, which made it an all-inclusive package for a weekend filled with tremendous fun and enjoyment.

The first concert was a start-studded event that had Cher Lloyd as an opening act, followed by EVE, Sean Paul, Akon and then Baauer (Harlem Shake). It was truly an amazing concert. Everyone enjoyed their time and danced the night away. People arrived in all sorts of outfits; many had neon glow sticks and light-up t-shirts. The second day was just as amazing. The one8one team went to The Village and attended seminars on how to make it in the music industry coupled with discussions by artists who shared their stories, as well as performances from various local artists. However, the village was not solely focused on music, there were also dance and sports events. Bboy dancers battled it out in a series of competitions for solo dancers as well as crews. The French dance group Vagabond Crew were there to judge the dance competition.

After The Village was over, it was time for the EDMX concert, which featured Example, ATB, Kevin Saunderson, DJ Rudee, Sander Kleinenberg, Marco V, Miss Nine and Judge Jules. The highlight of the event was Example, to which the crowd went wild and everybody danced till the wee hours of the morning.

The funniest part of the whole experience was the cosplay with people in LED glasses and stuffed monkeys for ties. All in all it was an amazing event that is sure to be remembered.

My Music X

The night started off with two amazing DJs who energised the atmosphere for the crowd that was

soaring in numbers. The music was fast paced and the tempo was high. Flashing lights and lasers illuminated the arena but was nothing quite exquisite as what was

awaiting Tiesto. The crowd absorbed the music with great pleasure, donned on refreshments, socialized

and danced. There was a genuine sense of eagerness in waiting for Tiesto’s arrival.

As the clock was approaching the first hour mark of the early morning, you could smell Tiesto’s presence

in the air. Everyone knew he was around. Suddenly, the arena went dark. The massive light display screens

behind the stage were turned on and a symphonic orchestra of trance opened for Tiesto. The ravers were

jubilant. Smartphones and cameras were up in the air capturing the empty stage. Whistles and chants almost eclipsed the opening track as the crowd voiced their

impatience and eagerness for Tiesto to finally reveal himself. A minute later, a tall and confident structure of a man, who has dominated the trance and electronic

scene for years, appeared on stage with a grin on his face – Tiesto was in the house and the crowd exploded into roars!

It can easily be said, that the audience thoroughly enjoyed the music and the experience was one to be remembered. There is no doubt as to why Tiesto is

amongst the top DJs around the world. His ability to turn electronic audio into soul inspiring music has captured millions of hearts around the globe. His music

is truly universal. People from all ages, backgrounds and cultures crave his music and adore his on-stage enthusiasm. Why else would Tiesto return to Dubai year

after year?

People like Tiesto do not retire. Millions around the world need him for their fix of trance and electronic beats. It is a phenomenon how he can still manage to do it.

As Tiesto says, “it’s the Club Life”.

DJing for over 25 years playing in over 70 countries around the world. He was

the first editor of the clubbers bible, Mixmag, and has remixed and produced

for everybody from U2 to Kylie and David Bowie to the Pet Shop Boys. He has also

created over 20 mix compilations for the likes of Global Underground, Renaissance

& Radio1’s Essential Mix and also been the main man behind the independent

dance music labels Stress Records, Audio Therapy and now, his new imprint,

Selador Recordings. Quite simply, Dave Seaman is one of the legends of electronic house music. one8one sat down with Dave

Seaman at Nasimi Beach for the Salsa musical event by Loud In... Promotions

and Blitz Productions.

You are considered one of the pioneers in house music. You’re also amongst the best DJs in House with over 25 years record spinning. How do you still do it?Because I love it. You have to really still enjoy it, to travel. It’s a brilliant job. There’s no denying it’s one of the best jobs in the world if you love music and to keep going at this pace and travelling all around the world, to keep this enthusiasm it has to come from a passion. It’s where it all comes from for me.

To people who are not familiar with your music, how would you describe it?It kind of goes, “boom tiss boom tiss boom tiss” haha! I don’t know, it’s really difficult to explain music these days because with so many genres; you are techno, you are garage, you are house, you are progressive, it’s difficult to put it into a category. But, now it’s so blurred because what people today call techno is not what I remember it to be and the same goes for progressive house. What people call progressive house now is kind of a cheesy kind of Euro Dance or that’s what I’d call it. My music is more underground in nature. I suppose it goes from deep house to tech house to techno really.

Do you get nervous before playing on stage or on stage?Occasionally, not very often these days. Less of nervousness and more of not knowing exactly what you’re going to do. It’s kind of good, keeps you on the edge. But it’s surely not like I used to get nervous when I was younger. Once you’re on stage you concentrate on the music and you’re fine.

Who would you say are your favourite DJs and if you could choose, who would you partner up with on stage?It’s a difficult one because it depends on the place and the venue. There are so many amazing DJs out there but Sacha and John Digweed are two of my favourites. I’ve admired them from the early days. It’s also different listening to producers and listening to DJs. They can be very different. I like to check out a lot of new comers too.

If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing right now?I probably would be out there dancing! Haha. I still really enjoy it. I probably wouldn’t be in Dubai right now. I’d probably be at home having an early night so I can take the kids to football practice in the morning.

thrilled to see them when they’ve already had an amazing show last time they visited Abu Dhabi. When I got to the venue, I didn’t expect that the night would

turn out to be this much fun. The crowd was not as big as last time, nonetheless, still full of die-hard fans.

I must say that the whole show was a great performance; the lights were great, the sound was amazing and their presence was outstanding. I’m pretty sure the ‘Metallica’ beach balls and buckets of guitar picks they threw out into the crowd

made their fans very happy, but what really impressed me was the set-list which included most of my favorite songs - their old school tunes. Oh, and I completely

forgot to mention that Kirk is a big horror movie fan and his ‘Dracula’ guitar was epic!

As for the opening band, EYE, I loved their performance and can honestly say I’m glad they were chosen; I felt like the genre of music was a little different for

Metallica fans, but they remain one of my favorite bands from the UAE. EYE’s music is very different than anything I’ve ever heard locally. They are just on a

whole new level, especially when they get to display their visuals.

I’m glad this show wasn’t just a repetition of the last one in 2011. I felt like Metallica really warmed up to the Middle Eastern crowd.

Lost My Feels at MEFCC

So let’s have a rundown of what happened, shall we? We met up with Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings), Alan Tudyk (Firefly), Manu Bennett (Spartacus), Warwick Davis (Willow), Ioan Gruffud (Fantastic Four), voice acting couple Tara Platt (Legion of Superheroes) and Yuri Lowenthal (Ben 10), and returning guest Max Landis (Chronicle). Fans of their work got to meet their favorite stars, attend various Q&As, get some autographs and photos, and, most importantly, meet other fans.

Oh and the cosplay? Hmm. We ran into Queen Amidala, a shadow priest, a few Assassins, several Daleks, Sherlock Holmes (genderbent no less), Shinigamis, a very fabulous Lumpy Space Princess, Vanelope Von Schweetz, Ash Ketchum, the Eleventh Doctor, Merida, a few Homestuck trolls, and so much more. Finally, we had a chat with none other than Ioan Gruffudd. Here is the low down on how it went.

Q: First of all, welcome to Dubai! Is this your first time here? Why thank you! First time in the Middle East actually! It’s been a bit of a whirlwind! I’m going to have to come back for sure!

N: So what would you tell your audience? Something that people don’t know about you?I am not a morning person. My wife can attest to that.

We here, at one8one, don’t say this enough but we really, really, really love conventions. They’re fun! And we meet

the greatest people ever! The Middle East Film and Comic Con 2013 (MEFCC) was no exception. You’ll remember our coverage

of MEFCC’s first event last year and the ridiculous amounts of awesome that was

enjoyed by all. Did we worry about how things would shape up this year? Maybe

a little? Were we astounded at how much things have improved since the

last time? Definitely!

M: Are you a coffee person?One a day, maybe. Not every day. I do like

an espresso now and then, maybe after dinner. I’d drink a lot more coffee when I

was younger, before I became a dad.

Q: Marvel Comics movies have been making quite the comeback these past

few years. Especially with the whole tie ins with The Avengers. Would you

consider going back? If yes, whom would you play?

It’s so hard after playing such a defining role; it’s very hard to pick something

else within the same medium. I’m not a knowledgeable fan of comic books. When I was growing up, I loved the Spiderman animated series. I loved watching Adam West as Batman and Christopher Reeve

as Superman. I don’t know! If I had to choose, and I know it’s not a Marvel

character, but I think I’d love to play Batman.

N: Any roles you would be hesitant to play?

Nothing that I can think of. If I’d refuse then it’s usually to do with the quality

of the script or the characters. I haven’t been offered anything that I’ve ever

been hesitant about, you know?

M: I have a question about your character in the Fantastic Four. You

portray a very rational and cool masculinity. What are your thoughts about such a characterization within

the superhero genre?What’s wonderful about this world, and

maybe why it attracts so many people, is that it represents the nerd in us. For

want of a better word, I understand that

that particular word is often used in a derogatory context. Anyways, more

often than not, most of such characters might not be so handsome or physically

capable as their peers. Reed Richards is a man of science; he’s a man of facts

and numbers. That’s his world and a lot of people can associate with that. And

in spite of all this, he must become a heroic figure and use his wits to save

the world. With a lot of these characters, they might not necessarily be the most confident person like Tony Stark, they

have to dig a little deeper

into themselves to find their own inner strength and learn how to harness it. I suppose that is the most appealing factor about such characters. It’s similar in

the case of both Peter Parker (Spiderman) and Bruce Wayne (Batman); both have suffered in their youth and rather than wither away, they’ve decided to put their

minds and bodies to the test.

N: If you had to pick a theme tune for your life, what would it be?Do you remember the A-Team? I’d be quite happy if I could have the theme tune

play every time I open the front door.

N: If you were food, what would you be? Do you like chocolate?I do like chocolate! But if I were food I wouldn’t be a chocolate, I would be a

homemade Penne Arabiata.

M: What pushed you into acting?I was 11. Some producers had come to my school to cast for a Welsh-language

soap opera. I didn’t know that I loved acting or that I wanted to act but I decided to audition for that. I got the job and I fell in love with acting through doing the job. After that, I decided that I wanted to study acting and I enrolled in a drama

college in London and studied for three years and pursued a career in acting as an adult. There wasn’t one particular show, movie, or performance that really

pushed me into acting; it was very gradual.

Q: As far as I remember, you’ve acted in movies, theatre, and television shows. Do you have a preference?

It would be unfair to compare between the three in my opinion, I love them all equally. I must admit that playing a certain character onstage for a length of

time is not necessarily something that I love enormously. I have never found a character that I have been able to evolve and grow with. Television, I like to think that we are living in a golden age of television because that’s where all the great

writing is. As for film, I guess you get a little more time to paint the pictures. Television is a little more immediate.

M: What is your work lifestyle like?In television, basically you’re making a movie every week, especially in American television. Sometimes you need to shoot everything within 7 or 8 days. When you

look at American shows that are out there now, the quality and the standard is very high. The production values are incredibly high for something that was shot

and edited within a week.

M: Would you say that you‘d be putting your life on hold?If you’re in a series then yes. I have many friends in America who essentially

have no life. An example would be the cast members on Grey’s Anatomy. They’re globally renowned for the show and the characters that they play but I doubt

they’ve seen the light of day for the last 6 years. When something like that gets into your life I guess it’s very hard to turn it down. I’d love to have that

problem I think.

We started Fashion Forward with a debate on the identity of the Middle Eastern fashion. It is true that Middle

Eastern countries have a common DNA when it comes to fashion; embroidery, Arabic calligraphy, silver, gold,

embellishment and crystals are what the GCCs crowd looks for; the details that stand out on their outfits. Whether

it is the traditional ladies or the new girls, they are all influenced by street fashion; they all want to be elegant and look like stars. Today, blogs and media are the main

influencers when it comes to the subject of what to wear. Fashion comes from the street and Kenzo’s rebirth is the

perfect example.

Starch Foundation started the weekend with their patterns and bright colour-focused pieces that were all about confidence and versatility. Most of the stuff

could be worn during the day and night; at work or to a party. Whyesse continued the trend with a

beautifully structured collection featuring Oriental patterns in colours that shimmered and channeled

the nature influence. There were definitely some pieces, we bet, that are being ordered by many right this very moment. Whyesse seemed to have just the

right amount of colour, fit and structure in each and every one of her pieces.

While most of the focus was on womens fashion, menswear did get enough attention to wow the

crowd. The Emperor 1688 was a particular favourite of ours. The extremely-well fitted pieces focused on complimenting the male body, while adding a touch

of patterned designs and embroidery that added just the right amount of shine. Women were not left

out, with the excessively puffed up skirts, fitted tops and the dresses that looked elegant yet playful. The

theme of blues and shades of anything from brown to beige were the accent of the show.

Essa seemed to be the highlight of the day. After

queuing for over 30 minutes outside the hall, we were welcomed to a very dark and heavy show. Most of the outfits were black with a multitude of layers for men

and women alike. It was definitely the edgy show of the day.

For the second day, Dima Ayad delivered a collection

that was very structured and elegant. Her day dresses allowed enough skin to add that summer touch while the cut was still very traditional with uncluttered and beautiful lines. The fabric moved

with each step, adding perfect curves to the silhouette. The designers lit up the F/W collection

with pastel colors, red, white, petrol green, dark purple and gold.

We wanted more combinations, on which Kage

delivered. Launching to the new Daft Punk/Pharell Williams’ new track ‘Get Lucky’, the duo unleashed

a trendy collection with a street and hip/hop influences, welcoming the new hoodies, shirt and

pants combo in full black or white. Indigo was also strongly present in plain dresses. For the evening,

Kage gave us the choice between a long shirt or dresses with embroidery. The hyper-electro show gave way to a dramatic ballet in slow motion, Ezra.

After one minute of classical music, the first model entered the room. Dresses were mostly long, and the designer used excessive sequencing in his creations. The collection was constructed in three colors: white, silver

and red. We couldn’t help but admire the effort that went into making those dresses. The show closed with a spectacular wedding red dress topped by a

crown both covered in crystals.

Speaking of spectacular, we kept finding ourselves in awe at Michael Cinco’s show. The attention to detail was by far close to none. While the theme was

clearly inspired by a white and black swan, we could not describe the intricate and elegant elements each of his dresses had. The final piece was simply

phenomenal with the skin tone dress that was beautifully embroidered with an amazingly embellished trail.

The highlight on the final day of this fashion frenzy was Amato; with mainly black and white pieces, the collection was very Roman-inspired; it featured

oversized bows in shiny dark leather and iron armor, which we thought was absolutely outstanding.

In the end, while we looked for the answers, we found that Middle Eastern

fashion definitely exists and what we’ve seen at Fashion Forward is just a tip of the iceberg. Even though the overall fashion scene seems in its infantry, the

participating designers have indeed shown that they are ready to go bigger and they’ve got what it takes and more. Even if you are not into fashion, this was an interesting event; however, those who love this stuff, get your outfits

ready for Season 2 in October.

36So it’s prom night – the biggest social event of your high school career! You’ve got your dress, shoes, accessories and purse selected, but what about your make-up? Professional twin sister make-up artists Dee & Dal have put together their top recommendations for how to make your look perfect for prom night!

First thing’s first, you need to pick a look you like. Look at celebrities, fashion magazines and past looks you’ve had and decide on a rough idea of how you want your hair and make-up to look. Remember to keep your look age appropriate – nothing is worse than young adults with make-up that is way too old for them. Stay away from very dark colours on your eyes and lips or very heavy foundation coverage. Your skin and look is youthful, so play up on that! Let’s go step by step on each component of your look…

BaseUse a light coverage foundation or, even better, a tinted moisturiser for your base. If you have any problem areas i.e. redness, pimples, darkness under your eyes, use a liquid concealer that is two or three shades lighter than your foundation or tinted moisturiser. For a flawless and youthful look apply both with your fingertips. The natural oils from your hand will make your base look as natural as possible while still giving you a base to work on. Apply a translucent powder (powder with no colour) over your whole face with a big powder brush to set your base.

EyesWe all love smokey eyes for an evening event – but stay away

from using black shadow to create the drama. Instead go for a gold or peach iridescent eyeshadow cream or powder across

your whole eyelid. Then take a brown or, if you really want some colour, a purple or grey to the outer corner of your upper eyelid in

the crease of you lid. Blend this into the base colour with a small eyeshadow brush to give you that cat eye look. Finish with a black

or dark brown gel eyeliner or gel pencil across your top lid only, as close to your lash line as possible. For a softer look take your eyeshadow brush and blend the line to soften it. This also takes the pressure off making the line too perfect as this is difficult to

achieve without practise. For added drama, take the line out from your eyelid slightly to extend the length of your eye. Blend this into

your darker colour at the outer corner of your eye. Finish off with two coats of mascara on your upper and lower lashes. Remember

to let the first coat dry before applying the second to make your eyes really pop!

FinishingAdd some colour to your cheeks for a fresh and healthy look. Using a smaller powder brush, get some of your blusher onto your brush, remembering to shake off the excess before you apply. Smile as big you can in the mirror and apply your blusher to the apple of your cheeks – the round part when you smile. For lips, keep the colour nude or very soft pink and use a gloss. For added staying power, use a lip pencil in light pink and colour in your whole upper and lower lip. Then apply your gloss on top.

To finish, use a shimmery highlighter in a nude colour and sweep over your cheekbones and just below your eyebrow to complete your look.

Dalia El Ali“One fixation that remains in majority of my designs is the appearance of the modern yet classic vintage edge.”

Our cover girl, Dalia El Ali has given us the opportunity to discover her process

of creating the label ‘Dee by Dalia’, allowing us to introduce you to her motto

‘Representing girls that would love to be unique, to love, to live and laugh’. A deep

look into the dolly skirt designer, Dalia tells us all about her journey before design, how she pursued her passion in fashion design,

inspiration and the development process of opening her very own home boutique.

Tell us a little bit about yourself before we get started.I would love to say I am local since I moved to Al Ain when I was two years old. I am originally Palestinian/ Lebanese and moved continuously from Abu Dhabi to Al Ain and so forth within the region till I settled in Dubai.

Before you found design, what kept you busy?When I graduated high school, as much as I would have loved to, I wouldn’t have been able to migrate north and study fashion design. I got my degree in finance and worked as an investment banker to realise that’s not what I wanted to do but pursued it just to have a good, stable degree considering fashion was not that well recognised, according to my father. Considering that the degree helped me stand steady on my feet, I didn’t mind but I was always hungry for fashion and I decided to take a break, realising I couldn’t possibly carry on doing something I do not enjoy.

It crossed my mind to become a stylist for magazines, fashion shoots and various photo shoots. In the process I realised that I have the passion and ability to create clothing for women; something unique, gorgeous and appropriately edgy.

When did you realise you had a designer in you?I have always adored fashion! Distinctively, I remember when I was six years old, the traditional way of mixing and matching colours never appealed to me and so I would use contrasting colours with flashy prints and it used to drive my mother crazy! But it never stopped me from cutting up my jeans and making them into skirts, trying a new style by cutting off shoulders to create a new shirt and pasting embroidery onto my old clothes to produce a touch of exciting uniqueness in my clothing.

How did you start your designing process?I decided to begin a fashion design course at London College of Fashion which motivated me to project my very own little collection whilst pursuing the course. Studying design allowed me to discover many new and different ways of how garments are made with various fabrics, embellishments and contrasts. There was always something new to learn–this alone was an inspiration to me.

What inspires you to daily produce such beautiful designs?Daily, there are a variety of beautiful aspects in life that inspire me such intricate

detail of architecture, the simplicity of a flower of the complex beauty of nature. Taking a simple characteristic of a car such as the wheel or the rim plate can

produce such vast ideas, not just in my mind but I’m sure in the mind of so many others to create an object you never thought you could. I make the best

of whatever my eyes can observe around me and install that in my imagination to alter my designs. One fixation that remains in majority of my designs is the

appearance of the modern yet classic vintage edge.

Do you sew your garments yourself?Unfortunately, I have not done a tailoring course which narrows my experience

in that field; however I do try and make samples and separate trial pieces before I take it to my tailor to complete the final model. Just to increase my knowledge

with that section, I do my best to assist the tailor as far as I can.

How do you stay or keep yourself motivated to continue in a field with such vast competition?

When I first started, I expected it to be a minor thing, a trend that would end within a few months of trial. I surely did not expect people to become so fond of it in such a short period of time. When I started I launched at a house gathering

with 52 pieces and within that couple of hours 48 pieces were sold! At that moment I never felt more motivated and eager to pursue this, realising there

was a niche in the market I did not even think of targeting. To be able to achieve what I have in such a short period of time, knowing that while I am satisfied, my

customers are satisfied, is what provokes me to take a further initiative to my designs.

What would you say makes you and your designs so different from

designers that are competing in the same line as you?

I suppose you can determine my unique efforts by the fact that my designs are

targeted at women who want to look young and fresh bringing that ballerina

effect or the dolly skirt look without appearing immature. The looks that are in the market have a more teenage feel to it whereas the designs I provide are

made to suit a lady that can look fun and elegant at the same time. When I wear

my own I am complimented and feel worthy.

How does that make you feel to see ladies wearing your designs?

Ecstatic! When I see people wearing my garments as I did at the Fashion Forward event, I was overwhelmed

because these ladies selected my clothing to wear for such an occasion.

I had a lot of people curiously stopping me and asking about my designs and

the best part of it was that some of the most well-established designers had

complimented me on my work. This stimulates and drives me to work harder.

It’s always pleasing to see people that have so many choices in clothing, yet

they decide to wear my pieces.

You’ve done a brilliant job this far, what would you say is your next move?

I am very pleased with where I am right now. Seeing the boutique Sauce selling my designs makes me feel successful. I

believe my next step would be to create my own website where I can display

my work. I would love to start my own Haute Couture line which will be a whole

new level of design and elegance. I am working towards expanding throughout

the Middle East.

It can’t be easy juggling your career, social and personal life. How do you manage?There are only a few hours in a day and I try to make the most of it. I try to balance between family and work. Before I started the design course I had a very active social life which kept me busy and has now helped me introduce my line of clothing. I still manage to be socially active.

Aside from designing, is there anything else you have a passion for?Umm… SHOPPING! (Laughs). All of us women enjoy shopping and no matter how much I do it I can never have enough clothing in my closet but my first and only passion would be fashion; designing it, studying it and making it.

Little birdy told us you have an event coming up in May, tell us about it.Well, when I had my first launch party and it turned out to be so successful I still did not want to pursue direct sales; however due to high demand and people being unable to shop for my designs online, I was left with no choice but to have a few open house launches which allowed some of my close friends and those who were interested to visit and view what I had designed. This upcoming event is a small open house social gathering which will exhibit my summer by Atiyya Laher

collection and see what people think of it. I don’t plan on hosting these events often, just a few surprise ones to keep people updated so they know there is always something new to look out for. With time, I suppose, I will become more accustomed to it but I would prefer to get other local boutiques involved in selling my items.

There are so many young designers out there working hard to achieve what you have, do you have any motivational words for them?My greatest advice would be that if you have a passion for something just keep working at it! Don’t stop trying, keep training, and keep practicing because it will never go to waste; no one can ever have enough knowledge or experience. Interning for an international brand would help you greatly in the future. Considering there are not a lot of places in Dubai, Elie Saab and Alexander McQueen are not based here, so follow your inspirations and try hard to work with them. My second piece of advice would be, the moment you feel you are ready, start! Don’t delay, you can keep learning, but in my opinion, I feel if you have the basics, you can do it if you put your mind to it.

And last but not least, the question we ask all our guests, where do you see yourself in ten years?In ten years I see myself being a well-established designer, owning a variety of boutiques, my own Couture line and not just in the U.A.E but throughout the region. In my boutiques there would be an excessive amount of women’s clothing. I hope to introduce evening wear in my collections. It would be a dream come true to be successful and witness my customers pleased with my work. I know it takes hard work and everything will eventually fall into place if I continue to persue this dream with immense passion.

An interview with this designer can motivate you readers out there to push yourself into pursuing your dream, especially those young designers. One simple step can lead to something major and fulfilling.

While mobile phones, tablets and computers are what one would

normally expect from this section, this month one8one takes a look at often-

forgotten gadgets we take for granted, printers! We’ve tried two latest offerings

HP and LG have at the extreme ends of the size and portability graph.

LG Pocket Photo

HP Officejet 7110This printer is one reliable machine. We’ve had this for a while now and while the thing is a bit clunky, it does the job perfectly well. Whatever we’ve thrown at it, it chewed it up and spat freshly printed out pages at a pretty impressive speed.

Apart from supporting the traditional sizes a small printer would, the Officejet 7110 is capable of printing on anything up to A3 sheets.

Another handy thing is how easy it is to use this machine with Mac OSX; one just has to add the printer in the preferences and off they go. Everything is simple and quick. The Windows users among us had to use the CD driver that was packaged with it, but it didn’t take them long and they were soon printing their stuff left and right.

Finally, as expected in 2013, this printer is fully wireless as long as it’s connected to the same network your devices are connected to. Overall, a pretty good buy.

This little printer is a wonderful thing, that’s until you run out of paper. Here is the deal, LG Pocket Photo uses no ink and therefore requires a special LG paper that can be bought separately.

Bacially, this is a tiny pocket printer that prints small images wirelessly via its Android and iOS app. The app includes minor editing functions and is overall easy to use. It can print up to 15 papers on a single charge.

Overall, this is more of a gadget which could prove useful in a situation when, let’s say, you are visiting your grandparents and would like to leave them a couple of shots before heading back home. Apart from this, we couldn’t find much use for this attractive and well-packaged idea.

What is Teens Talk? Teens talk is the ONLY talk show for the youth. Teens

talk is an online TV show, in which teens from all around the UAE have the opportunity to discuss, relate to and

receive advice about common and popular topics amongst teenagers, without sharing identities. The anonymity of

the whole scenario creates a safe yet fun environment for hosts as well as viewers. For the first time in years, the

youth have a voice to project their thoughts and ideas on today’s frequent issues in the life of a typical teenager.

Whether its family problems at home, or the usual drama with friends and teachers at school, Teens Talk is the

talk show where these problems and dilemmas are not ignored, but acknowledged.

Who is it created for? Teens talk was created to empower and assist teenagers (13-17) and parents alike. It has become apparent that teenagers within the region have become discouraged from sharing their thoughts and ideas, almost as though the youth of the UAE “don’t have a voice”. Although the majority of teenagers and parents have friends and peers they can turn to, it is sometimes hard to reach out to the ones we love in order to ask for help or advice. This is where Teens Talk becomes a great tool for teenagers and parents of the UAE.

Animator, photographer, sketch artist, and music composer, Mohammed Ahmed

Fikree Mohammed is a simple man who has been causing quite the stir in local art circles for the past six years. A graduate of

the SAE Institute in Dubai, Mohammed is a well-accomplished artist who has been inspired by the sheer simplicity of it all. “I

don’t think I have a specific influence in my art-style. What really influences me is the

simplicity of it all. I love drawing simple things like clouds and flowers.”

While initially experimenting with photography and composing, Mohammed has since moved to animating where it appears that he has found his place. Starting out with simple experimental animations, Mohammed has since had his short movies showcased at the Dubai International Film Festival, the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, the Gulf Film Festival, and the Cannes Short Film Corner in the Cannes Film Festival in 2011. Starting out wasn’t very easy, of course. “Honestly, I think my first animation was bad. I had only heard about the Gulf Film Festival two days before the deadline. I had done a lot of experimental animations before but I had never made a short so I decided to work on one.” Mohammed champions the ideal that experimentation and perseverance are the keys to improving yourself in the world of art.

Right now, Mohammed has been working hard on his latest animation: The Sword of Atlartor. While initially conceived as a ten minute short, Mohammed decided to extend the movie to a feature film as the plot was too much for a regular short. “Feature films are usually at least an hour long and I thought it would be cool to make the UAE’s first fully animated feature film. It’s a really great opportunity to go first although the movie has nothing to do with UAE culture.” The script was written in September 2011 and the animation only started a year later.

We here at one8one are currently loving the animation stills and can’t wait to see the final movie!

Use a Neti Pot. Allergens get stuck in your mucus membranes after breathing them in. When this happens, the body reacts to them, causing allergy symptoms. These hypertonic saline washes can help clear the nasal passages.

Common seasonal allergens include pollen and grass, which peak in the morning and at dusk. To lessen the blow, close windows and avoid going outside to exercise at those peak times. If you cannot prevent yourself from being outside, rinse off when you get inside. This will remove pollen from your body, preventing allergic reactions.

Omega-3 fatty acids are effective anti-inflammatories to fight asthma and allergies. These healthy fatty acids are found in fish, specifically salmon, as well as green leafy vegetables, hemp seed, and flaxseed oil. Anti-inflammatory agents help open up nasal and sinus passages.

Quercetin, a natural Benadryl, can be taken as a natural anti-inflammatory supplement to stabilize mast cells. Mast cells in the body are filled with allergens which, when released, cause allergic reactions. Quercetin prevents the mast cells from rupturing, thus keeping the allergens in check. This natural supplement has been found to be especially effective when taken with Vitamin C.

Specifically to help with itchy eyes and swollen nasal passages, an herbal supplement named Butterbur can help. The supplement can help stop the chain reaction caused by allergens. Butterbur is particularly affective when used to relieve hay fever, acting much like a natural antihistamine.

Allergies affect people differently. Some are merely annoyed with the allergens that cause itchy, swollen eyes and runny or

congested noses. Others are debilitated.

In order to combat pesky allergens and avoid the symptoms, people turn to over-the-counter and prescription medications

to find relief. Unfortunately, some people have adverse reactions to allergy medications and would prefer not to

suffer through the side effects.

There are twelve things people can do to decrease the effects of allergies naturally before reaching

for medication.

Drink green tea. The polyphenol found in green tea, catechin, effectively reduces allergy symptoms. Catechin reduces the histamine levels, which cause allergy symptoms such as runny noses, itchy eyes, and excessive sneezing. Sipping on green tea throughout the day helps fight excessive histamine release.

Capsaicin, found in chili peppers, can help relieve allergy symptoms. Found in many spicy foods, this ingredient can act as a pain reliever as well as a nasal decongestant. Some over-the-counter sprays contain capsaicin and are used to relieve allergies.

Reducing stress in your life can also help keep allergies under control. When people are stressed out, their allergies and asthma tends to get worse. It is the breakdown of the immune system and its inability to fight off toxins when it is stressed out. Deep breathing exercises may help alleviate stress.

Use ginger and turmeric as anti-inflammatory agents to help reduce nasal and sinus congestion. Ginger tea helps reduce inflammation and can help increase vitamins your body needs to fight the allergens. Cooking with turmeric provides the same effects.

Acupuncture can help relieve allergies. This ancient, Chinese technique using small needles to help open up channels and relieve discomfort can be used to prevent or reduce allergy symptoms.

Increase your Vitamin D intake. Vitamin D, found in herring and cod liver oil, as well as egg yolks, can help reduce the severity of your allergy symptoms. In addition, spending time outside in the sunshine naturally increases Vitamin D exposure.

Drink water. It is important for all who suffer from allergy symptoms to increase their water intake. Drinking at least half your body weight in ounces of water will help relieve allergy symptoms. Water effectively thins the mucus secretions and hydrates your membrane tissues, helping decrease congestion in your nasal and sinus passages.

Whether you’re suffering from seasonal or year-round allergies, finding natural ways to relieve the symptoms is always the best way to go. Your body will appreciate the natural substances rather than manmade chemicals that will help keep your nose from running, eyes from itching, and nasal passages from swelling up.

Tips from a proWhat is a depth of field?The depth of field (DOF) refers to the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear exceptionally sharp in the photograph. When less objects appear sharp in the image it creates a shallow depth of field; meaning the area in front and behind the focus point is very slim or shallow. When the objects from near to far appear sharp in the image it creates a deep depth of field; meaning the focus range covers a large area front-to-back. There are three main factors that determine the depth of field: focal length, aperture and distance from the subject. Greater aperture (the small number of f-stops such as f/2.8), smaller distance between you and the subject and greater focal length of the lens (such as 100 mm lens as opposed to 28 mm lens) will result in a shallow depth of field.

Go creative: Bokeh effectBokeh is one of the beautiful effects of digital photography which is fun to experiment with. Bokeh effect refers to soft circular patterns of light within the out-of-focus area of an image. To achieve a good Bokeh effect you will have to create a shallow depth of field. Set your camera at a larger aperture, you may consider the range from f/1.2 to f/4. Use a longer lens. A fixed focal length lens such as 50mm will be good for this effect. Place the subject you are focusing on as close to the lens as possible but further from the background. Make sure your background is well lit and experiment!

My face was blank, my legs were asleep and my hands traced the marble floor searching for purpose. The singer’s voice echoed in my mind, it struck my ears

with every syllable, my heart leaping with every beat. The burning agarbati (inscense stick) filled the room, the smell was nauseatingly rich. Far too strong for my liking. The chant changed again, this one was slower, which meant I had

to look more alive.

I looked around, politely smiling at anyone I could make eye-contact with. My eyes eventually wandered back down to the wrinkled booklet Nani (maternal

grandmother) had given me. The calligraphy was undeniably beautiful; as were the meanings, I’m sure. The beat picked up and everyone around me began

swaying, the sound of their heavy clothing against the ground gave me chills while I sat still. These words meant nothing to me, while they literally moved

everyone else. My mother gave me a discerning look; she knew how bored I was. I put on my best smile and closed my eyes. I’d never felt this empty.

“Arrey, what are you doing sitting here alone? Go sit next to Neal na?” It was the single most irritating woman on the face of the Earth, Pallavi aunty. It was so hard to believe my mother and her were sisters. She began patting me on the back, probably just trying to get a peek at the label on my salwar kamees. She was obsessed with labels, other people and money. I refused to move, mostly

because I knew that when I got up she would make a comment on how low my neck line was, or how bad she thought my hair was. She was the queen of gossip, a social climbing kitty party monster. I’m pretty sure she loved money

more than her own children. She just loved dressing them up in designer clothes. I gave in eventually, I simply couldn’t handle her cold, plastic nails

constantly touching my bare back. I wished she’d buy herself a better personality.

I walked over to Neal, who was absolutely gorgeous, on the outside at least. The ground next to him was colder and all I wanted to do was have him speak to me.

I flashed him a coy smile and continued pretending to care about the bhajans. He looked at me with intrigue, like there was something different about me.

He slowly broke into a kind smile and offered me some of his prashad sweets. I took a little of it into the palm of my hand and coldly returned to staring at

the singers. I’d heard that he liked me, but I was not at all interested. He was just another boy with an unlimited supply of his daddy’s money and cared

more about showing off his new Hermes belt than actually making something of himself. His life was planned out; marry a nice Indian girl, join the family

business, make lots of money. I wanted someone different, someone who had passion, love, and the ability to understand the meaning of life.

Love to me was ruthless. It was an unstoppable force, that tended to destroy everything in its path. The only way love could be good was if it was real,

unplanned, and the only people involved were the two that were in love. It didn’t work like that here. When you married someone, you married their whole

family whose expectations and rules you had to live by. Forever striving to win their respect. I knew mummy and papa were already looking for a boy for

me, they didn’t understand that I wanted to have a career and earn my own money. They didn’t understand that I actually wanted to leave and make my

own life. Everything here was so old-fashioned and jaded. It’s always the man that has to earn the living, and somehow older people are smarter people,

which means that my generation would have to live by every syllable the elders spoke. Men here are generally more accepted than women for no good reason

other than old patriarchal traditions being ingrained into this society that dictated men were the stronger sex and that women were not physically or

intellectually capable of being equal to or possessing any of the same rights or responsibilities as men. All the women did after marriage was cook and keep up appearances. They didn’t clean though, that was the “servants” job. It was

ridiculous I felt, and I had to leave.

Finally, the bhajans ended. These poojas always seemed to go on for forever, mostly because my Dadi (paternal grandmother) thought of herself as a professional singer. Everybody else thought of her as tone-deaf, and my mom and I thought of her as simply a witch. She’d declared herself queen of the family and took great joy out of torturing the new daughter-in-laws. She had some weird hang-ups about being the only woman in power or something. She belonged in the 18th century. I quickly walked through the busy crowd marveling at the amount of color and noise. The sequins and beads on everybody’s clothes complimented each other; it looked like a sea of diamonds with facial expressions and voices. The tabla player projected the perfect balance of chaos and beauty with his soft but fast rhythm. “Beta, come here! We were just talking about you!” It was the wicked witch of designer labels and neglected children. I reluctantly walked over to the botoxed group of women. “So say na, what are your plans now? Chal, let’s find you a nice Indian boy to get married to, and then you can give us all some cutie pie poochies!” I looked at her awkwardly wondering why her vocabulary was so bad; she did go to college. “I’m 18,” I replied blankly. I backed away from the whispering group claiming to have to help out in the kitchen. They’re all like cars, and gossip is their fuel. I would give anything to not end up like them or have to know them in the future. Every characteristic of theirs was so plastic they could be Barbie dolls, the more expensive ones of course.

I envied my brother more than anything. My parents gave him a free ride to college, away from home, and on the other side of the world. Their reason for not letting me go: I’m a girl and he is a boy. The amount of damage I was undergoing here in one day with these money-hungry gossip queens was much more than what I would go through having four years on my own, partying whenever I wanted and with whoever I wanted. Being free and not having to worry about what anyone thinks. Being self-conscious and worried about what other people thought of me was part of the lesson being raised in this crowd, which is why I had to leave. I didn’t tell my parents, or anyone that I had applied to university out of India. I’d waited for 18 years for my independence and the thought of it being limited to cooking for a man who’s true love was money terrified me. I’d applied for a scholarship, just incase my parents cut me off and today was the day I would know if I had a future outside of this materialistic prison.

I went straight up to my room, leaving everybody wondering why. It was better leaving people in uncertainty than having them know all the answers. I refreshed my email about 50 times; it was 8 pm here, and it was 11 am in New York, which meant that the admission letters had already been sent out. I sat frozen and felt the sequins pinching my arms. I kept reassuring myself that everything would be fine because my brother had agreed to help me out. I refreshed again and cupped my mouth preparing for the worst. There it was, a new email. I took a few deep breaths and opened it immediately, unable to stand the suspense. “Welcome Freshman!” it read. I bounced back on my bed, with glassy eyes. I had a one way ticket to freedom. I forwarded the email to my brother and retouched my make up, I could already see a happier person in the mirror.

My alarm was set for 4am. I tip-toed out of the house as slowly as possible, taking in every inch of beauty in my home. I was always too blinded by the negativity to notice how much of a home my house was to me. I took one last look around and finally opened the door to see the waiting taxi. It was all happening and I couldn’t be more grateful. I finally said goodbye to my past and
