    MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

"It can happen. It does happen.

But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane.

We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank t

last years editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academexcellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners asupported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learni

and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeti

    the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order

achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and looforward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looki

forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken

this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teacheare committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and pl

the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positi

challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holist

    needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of t

opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us

    this path.

    My best wishes to all.

    HISTORICAL ARTICLE

    Stephanie Kwolek

    1923 2014

Stephanie Kwolek was an organic chemist, best known for inventing

Kevlar in 1965. Kevlar is an immensely strong plastic, which was first

used as a replacement for steel reinforcing strips in racing car tiresand has gone on to be used in a large number of applications where

high strength is required without high weight.

Stephanie Louise Kwolek was born in 1923 in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania, USA. Her father died when she was only 10 years old,but he passed on his interest in science, particularly natural scienceto his daughter.

Aged 23, Kwolek graduated with a degree in chemistry fromMargaret Morrison Carnegie College of Carnegie Mellon University. She was quickly recruited to work as a chemist at Dupont Chemicalsin Buffalo, NY. Four years later, she moved to Wilmington, Delawarewhere she spent the remainder of her career with DuPont.

After nine years of research work, Kwolek made her majorbreakthrough, discovering Kevlar. Her pathway to discovery began ayear earlier, when she began looking for a new, lightweight plastic to

be used in car tires. The idea was that lighter tires would allowvehicles to enjoy better fuel economy.

Not only did Kevlar find use in tires, its combination of lightness andstrength has seen it used in a large variety of protective clothing

applications, such as bulletproof vests, which have saved the lives ofcountless police officers and other people.

Speaking about her discovery, Stephanie Kwolek, I dont think

theres anything like saving someones life to bring you satisfactionand happiness.

Stephanie Kwolek died on June 18, 2014, at the age of 90.

    Awards

Stephanie Louise Kwolek was awarded the National Medal ofTechnology; the Perkin Medal, which is seen as the highest award inAmerican industrial chemistry; the Chemical Pioneer Award of the

American Institute of Chemists; and the Howard N. Potts Medal forEngineering. In 1994, she was admitted to the National InventorsHall of Fame.

A site of genetic variation has been found that identified whichpatients with Parkinson's disease are more likely to have tremorsversus difficulty with balance and walking. The team also foundthat patients with this genetic variation had a slower rate ofParkinson's disease progression, and lower amounts of alpha-synuclein in the brain.

Hidden genetic mutations in stem cells could

    undermine therapeutic benefit: (14th April,

    2016)

For the first time, scientists have confirmed the long-standinghypothesis that as people age, they accumulate gene mutations intheir mitochondria -- cells' energy source. The team has

discovered that induced pluripotent stem, or iPS, cells, a type ofstem cell derived from patients' skin or blood cells contain faultymitochondrial DNA.

Genomic makeup of colorectal cancers predicts

immune system ability to fight tumors: (14th

    April, 2016)

Colorectal cancers heavily bedecked with tumor-related proteinscalled neoantigens are likely to be permeated with disease-fighting white blood cells, researchers report in a new study.Because such an influx of white blood cells often signifies animmune system attack on cancer, the discovery will sharpenresearch into therapies that make tumors more vulnerable to suchan attack.

    New principle for brain-controlled hormone

    secretion: (14thApril, 2016)

The concentration of the hormone prolactin in the blood iscontrolled by dopamine. However, the system can be thrown offbalance by certain drugs, especially antipsychotics, which canresult in sexual side effects. A new study in rats shows howdopamine can regulate itself and provides new knowledge abouthow the side effects arise.

Stop the growth: Researchers take aim at

    cancer metastasis: (14thApril, 2016)

Most cancer drugs today work by attacking tumor growth. Someresearchers, however, are taking aim at a different piece of thecancer puzzle -- preventing its ability to spread to new parts ofthe body, known as metastasis, which is the cause of most cancerdeaths.

Cervical peeling as treatment for precancerous

    conditions

The traditional treatment for serious pre-stages of cervical cancerconsists of a surgical procedure, so-called cervical conization. It'smajor side-effect is a marked increase in the rate of premature births. The present study shows that it is possible to spare patients thestressful operation and the augmented risk of giving birthprematurely: by using a gentle and comparatively simple procedure,in which 85% trichloroacetic acid is dabbed onto the affected area ofthe cervix. Because fairly concentrated acid is used, the diseased

areas are sloughed off. The few side-effects essentially consist of milddiscomfort during the procedure and a discharge, which lasts foraround two weeks and is caused by the mucosa that is shedfollowing the treatment. These are offset by the impressive outcomeof the study: eight weeks after the procedure, 82% of all womentreated were found to be in complete remission.

Paul Speiser, Department of General Gynaecology andGynaecological Oncology of the University Department of

Gynaecology at MedUni Vienna and Vienna General Hospital, member of the CCC and lead investigator, explains: "The results areextremely promising, since the procedure can be performed veryeasily by experts in the field of HPV-induced mutations of the cervix:Moreover, very little training is needed to perform the procedure, itdoes not require any special equipment or other operating theatreinfrastructure and the acid itself is very inexpensive. This means thatwe now have a real alternative for treating this condition and onethat would also be very attractive to poorer countries."

    Already established for other indications

85% trichloroacetic acid has been used for a long time now formedical and cosmetic skin peeling. In addition to this, it is used fortreating tissue mutations caused by HPV infections in the anal area.Indeed, it was this application that gave Speiser the idea of using it

on the cervix. However, the present study, which arose from adissertation prepared at the Department of General Gynaecology andGynaecological Oncology at MedUni Vienna, does not yet form abasis for widespread application. Speiser: "We still need more data.

We are going to conduct another study to investigate whether thesuccess of the treatment can be increased by a second application.Preliminary data suggest that a second treatment could increase thesuccess rate to more than 90%."

About HPV-induced cervical cancer and its pre-stages

Infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV) can lead to a pre-cancerous condition (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia) andultimately to cervical cancer. In Europe, this affects 205,000 women

a year, most of them in the 25 -30 agegroup. Since mild forms canheal spontaneously in many cases, no intervention is usually madebut patients are closely monitored to make sure that the conditionresolves itself. The standard treatment for more severe forms iscervical conization. This involves excising the mutated area of thecervix in a conical section. The operation increases the risk of givingbirth prematurely and is also associated with side-effects such asinfection or haemorrhaging. Alternative treatments use freezing

(liquid nitrogen), heat (using an electrical generator) and lasers. These methods are all technically complex, requiring their ownspecial equipment and training and are consequently expensive.
